Description

DESCRIPTION
"FIREARM AND FIRING PIN"
[0001] The present invention relates to a firearm with a safety device to prevent premature firing.
[0002] A common concern in the arms sector is the risk that a subsequent ammunition may be detonated before the detonation chamber of the firearm has completely closed.
[0003] In addition to compromising the firing accuracy, the partial opening of the chamber during the firing of an ammunition is an objective risk to people and objects that are in the proximity of the firearm, and in particular it constitutes a hazard to the personal safety of the firearm user.
[0004] The present invention falls within this scope, seeking to provide a firearm with a safety device of simple construction and reliable in all firing conditions, even in quick or spray firing.
[0005] This object is achieved by a firearm according to claim 1, and by a firing pin according to claim 15. The dependent claims describe preferred embodiment variants.
[0006] The object of the present invention will now be described in detail, with the aid of the accompanying drawings, in which:
[0007] - figure 1 shows a perspective view of the firearm object of the present invention, according to a possible embodiment ;
[0008] - figures 2 and 3 show two sectional views of the firearm in figure 1;
[0009] - figures 4 to 7 show different perspective views of the safety device used in the firearm of the previous figures, where the firearm frame and/or the slide have been sometimes omitted for more clarity;
[0010] - figures 8a, 8b, 9a, 9b, 10a, 10b show in pairs different perspective views respectively of a firing pin, a blocking member of the firing pin and an arming member, according to possible variants, usable in the safety device of the previous figures.
[0011] With reference to the above figures, reference numeral 1 globally indicates a firearm. Preferably, such a firearm 1 is a (semi- ) automatic gun, as for example shown in the drawing tables.
[0012] Such a firearm . comprises a firearm frame 2 which houses part of a firing device 4, the latter being operable by a trigger 6 projecting from frame 2.
[0013] According to different variants, the trigger may be hinged to the frame (as shown in the figures) , or mounted thereto in a translatable manner.
[0014] In the embodiment shown, the firing device 4 comprises a firing bar connected (advantageously hinged) on one end to the trigger, and which extends proximally along the firearm frame 2.
[0015] In the present patent text, the term "proximal" will denote the components of the firearm arranged on the side or towards the user of the same, or for variants which provide for a gun, towards a grippable portion 36 thereof; conversely, the term "distal" will denote components arranged towards a firing mouth 38 of the firearm.
[0016] The firearm comprises a slide 8 supported by the firearm frame 2 in a slidable manner along a direction of translation X, between a closed configuration of a firing chamber 10 of said firearm 1 and an open configuration of said chamber 10. Usually, the open configuration corresponds to a step of ejecting a cartridge case from the firing chamber.
[0017] According to a preferred embodiment, the firearm includes a barrel 40 which proximally delimits the firing chamber 10 and which, in particular, ends distally with the above firing mouth 38.
[0018] Such a barrel is preferably supported by the firearm frame (for example in a recoiling manner) so that the barrel axis C is parallel to or coincident with the direction of translation X of the slide. Preferably, the barrel is at least partially housed within slide 8.
[0019] Firearm 1 also comprises a firing pin 12, at least partially housed in slide 8, constantly pushed by first elastic means 14 towards a firing position in which one end 16 of the firing pin 12 (such as a tip thereof), engages the firing chamber 10. The firing pin is also movable to an armed position (shown for example in figure 3) in which it is distanced from the firing chamber 10.
[0020] Preferably, the firing pin cavity 46 houses first elastic means 14, and is optionally configured to house in a through manner a translation guide 44 of said firing pin .
[0021] Specifically, inside the slide there is formed a housing 42 which houses in a translatable manner the firing pin 12 and the first elastic means 14. Optionally, there may be provided a translation guide 44 for the firing pin 12, which advantageously serves as a spring- guide for the first elastic means.
[0022] According to a preferred variant, the firing pin 12 comprises a body 34, preferably hollow, and a firing pin tip 16. In the optional firing pin cavity 46 there is advantageously housed the translation guide 44 in a through manner. Preferably, the firing pin cavity 46 delimited by said body 34 extends about a body axis L, for example parallel to the translation direction X.
[0023] According to what is shown, the firing pin tip 16 extends in a direction parallel, not coincident with respect to the body axis L, so that it extends alongside the above translation guide 44.
[0024] According to a preferred variant, the firing pin identifies a safety seat 22 and a blocking seat 32, optionally angularly staggered with respect to the direction of translation of the firing pin 12, advantageously extending in radial directions outside the body.
[0025] For example, such seats 22, 32 are formed proximally to body 34. Different embodiments may provide for seats 22, 32 to include firing pin teeth, projecting radially outside body 46, or flares or shoulders formed in body 34.
[0026] The firearm further comprises a safety device 18 against premature firing, configured to release the firing pin 12 from the armed position only when slide 8 is arranged in the closed configuration.
[0027] In the present description, the term "premature firing" refers to the detonation of an ammunition carried out before the slide has returned to its closed configuration, thereby creating the hazard situation mentioned at the beginning.
[0028] Such a safety device 18 comprises a blocking member 20 of the firing pin 12, which opposes the action of the first elastic means 14, capable of being released (e.g. directly) from the firing device 4.
[0029] In other words, since, in the absence of constraints, the firing pin should be moved by the first elastic means towards the firing chamber, the blocking member 20 prevents such distal movement until the slide has not completely closed the chamber.
[0030] According to a variant, the blocking member 20 acts on the firing pin 12 only upon reaching the armed position of the latter, but not in the steps before such a position.
[0031] The .blocking member 20 may also be housed inside the slide, for example in the same housing 42 of the firing pin 12, or in a separate seat communicating with said housing 42.
[0032] The firing pin 12 is preferably translatable in a direction parallel to the translation direction X of the slide, and the blocking member 20 is advantageously rotatable (about an axis of rotation M) parallel to said direction X to reversibly engage the safety seat 22 of the firing pin 12. For example, the blocking member 20 comprises a proximal arm 54 which works on the firing pin .
[0033] In this regard, the blocking member 20 can be mounted in position adjacent to the firing pin, on a rotation shaft 48 which is alongside, for example, the translation guide 44. The rotation shaft can also advantageously act as a spring-guide for the second elastic means 24 described below.
[0034] An advantageous variant ' provides for the safety device 18 to include the second elastic means 24 mentioned above, which work in thrust between slide 8 (for example, between a bottom wall 50 thereof) and the blocking member 20 to promote the stop of the firing pin 12 by said member 20.
[0035] According to a further variant, the other part of the firing bar 4 comprises a lug 26 configured to work on an opposite cam surface 28 of the blocking member 20 to release the firing pin. Preferably, lug 26 is slidable along slide 8.
[0036] Accordingly, lug 26 on one end and the second elastic means on the other end work in the opposite direction, respectively to release or block the firing pin in specific positions of the slide with respect to the firearm frame.
[0037] One embodiment provides for the safety device 18 to comprise an arming member 30 connected to the firearm frame 2 which in the open configuration of slide 8 engages a blocking seat 32 of the firing pin 12 so that the firing pin 12 remains in the armed position.
[0038] Advantageously, the arming member 30 forms an end stop to the distal advancement of slide 8 and, optionally, such a member 30 is operable by means of a firing selector 32 of firearm 1, connected in a movable manner to the firearm frame 2 (as shown in figure 2) or to slide 8 (variant not shown) .
[0039] For example, the selector is operated to switch firearm 1 from a semi-automatic to an automatic firing function, and vice versa.
[0040] Advantageously, the arming member 30 is rotatable in relation to a transversal axis Z of firearm 1, arranged in substance through the thickness of such a firearm.
[0041] The present invention further relates to a firing pin 12 for a firearm, for example usable with a firearm 1 according to any of the previous claims, comprising a hollow body 34 and a firing pin tip 16 engageable in a firing chamber 10 of said firearm 1, wherein the firing pin cavity 46 delimited' by said body 34 extends around a body axis L and wherein the firing pin tip 16 extends in a parallel direction, not coincident with said axis L.
[0042] Finally, hereinafter, the operation of the firearm shown in the figures will be described.
[0043] Initially, slide 8 is located in the rest configuration, shown for example in figure 1, with respect to the firearm frame 2. In this position, slide 8 and frame 2 are substantially aligned or centred relative to each other, such as shown in figure 1.
[0044] The firing pin 12 is in a firing position (distally advanced position within housing 42 formed in slide 8), as the first elastic means 14 push it constantly into the firing chamber 10. In the variant shown, the first elastic means 14 are represented by the firing pin spring, where such a spring is therefore in a stretched condition, although preferably in a condition of preload.
[0045] Also the return spring 52, acting between slide 8 and firearm frame 2, is initially in a stretched, condition .
[0046] A proximal arm 54 of the blocking member 20 is next to the second firing pin tooth (which is a possible embodiment of the safety seat 22), in abutment to the side surface 56 of such a tooth.
[0047] The arming member 30 acts constantly on slide 8 pushed by an elastic arming element 58 thereof, but slide 8 is nevertheless free to slide in a backward/proximal direction thanks to the first cam surface 60 (rounded or shaped as a dome) which does not interfere to restrain the movement of slide 8, but rather rests in a slidable manner on the inner shoulder 62 formed in slide 8.
[0048] By contrast, a distal advancement of slide 8 is prevented, as the free end 64 of the arming member 30 lies in abutment armament of a bottom wall 50 of slide 8. [0049] In the above initial step, the blocking member 20 is located in a disengagement condition, externally rotated, with respect to the firing pin 12, so as not to engage the second firing pin tooth 22.
[0050] Following a manual retraction of slide 8 in a proximal direction (this being valid for the first arming of the firearm, but also occurring in each subsequent firing cycle due to the generation and expulsion of combustion gases) , slide 8 moves the firing pin 12 in a manner integral therewith, received with its spring guide and the firing pin spring in the firing pin seat 42. Also the blocking member 20 follows the direction of retraction .
[0051] Once an end-stroke of slide 8 has been reached (in an open configuration of the firing chamber 10) , the return spring 52 of firearm 1 is fully compressed and will begin to push in a direction opposite to that of retraction of slide 8, in distal direction, in order to bring it back to the rest configuration. Such a movement will however be prevented as long as the pressure in the firing chamber 10 does not fall below a predetermined pressure value.
[0052] In this configuration, the arming member 30 may trigger, rotating around the respective axis of rotation Z, towards the interior of slide 8 as the first cam IB2014/059499
11
surface 60 no longer suffers the influence of the inner shoulder 62 of slide 8. This arming member 30 will then come to abutment of the first firing pin tooth (which is a specific example of a blocking seat 32), as the latter has passed proximally the free end 64 of the arming member 30.
[0053] Almost concurrently, by virtue of the fact that the second firing pin tooth 22 has passed the blocking member 20 proximally, and in particular its proximal arm 54, such a blocking member 20 will be free to rotate with respect to an axis of rotation M under the influence of the second elastic means 24.
[0054] In this configuration, the firing pin 12 will be retained in two ways, namely through the action of the arming member 30 on the first firing pin tooth 32, and through the abutment of the proximal arm of the blocking member 20 on the second firing pin tooth 22.
[0055] When the pressure within the firing chamber 10 falls below the predefined pressure, slide 8 will begin its distal travel to reach the rest configuration under the thrust of return spring 52.
[0056] When the inner shoulder 62 of slide 8 reaches again the first cam surface 60, it will overcome the force exerted by the elastic arming element 58 and will cause the rotation of the arming member 30, and consequently the disengagement of the free end 64 of such a member 30 from the first firing pin tooth 32.
[0057] The firing pin 12 will however be unable to advance distally toward the firing chamber 10, as still firmly retained by the blocking member 20, and in particular by the proximal arm thereof. It follows that the arming of the firing pin 12 cannot be released as long as the firing chamber 10 is not completely closed.
[0058] In fact, the release of the firing pin 12 and therefore its advancement under the influence of the first elastic means 14 can take place exclusively through the actuation of trigger 6, as the latter is functionally interacting with the blocking member 20 to cause a twist thereof .
[0059] More particularly, trigger 6 is connected to the- firing bar 4 and is configured to cause a proximal retraction, when such a trigger 6 is pressed.
[0060] Such a bar 4 comprises lug 26 slidable with respect to the firearm frame 2 and to slide 8, this lug 26 being configured to work on the cam surface 28 of the blocking member 20 that faces lug 26.
[0061] Therefore, when the firing bar 4 moves proximally, lug 26 interferes with the cam surface 28 and causes the rotation of the blocking member 20 about its axis M, so that member 20 frees the firing pin, and specifically that the proximal arm 54 moves away from the firing pin 12 by rotation.
[0062] The firing pin 12 is then freed from any restraints, and the first elastic means can push it to the firing chamber 10 in which, during the distal movement of slide 8, an ammunition has been inserted, taken from an underlying magazine. Such ammunition is then struck by the firing pin 12.
[0063] However, it is important to note that lug 26 of the firing bar 4 is configured to release the firing pin 12 only when slide 8 lies in the rest configuration, firmly closing the firing chamber 10.
[0064] In fact, innovatively, through the above-mentioned device 18, the possibility of firing when chamber 10 is still partially open is completely excluded.
[0065] A man skilled in the art may make several changes or replacements of elements with other functionally equivalent ones to the embodiments of the above firearm, device and gun in order to meet specific needs.
