Definitions
- the present invention relates to the fuel pump module of a vehicle and more particularly to the pressure limiter which equips such a module.
- a pump draws fuel at atmospheric pressure and sends it compressed to the vehicle engine injection system.
- the pump is arranged in a pumping module.
- the output of the pump is connected to a high pressure line and a pressure regulator whose simple version is a normally closed pressure limiter.
- the limiter opens and allows some of the fuel to return to the tank and thus keep the fuel in the injection system under a limit value pressure.
- Conventional pressure limiters have a calibrated spring that holds a ball against a conical valve seat in the center of which opens a return channel to the reservoir. When the fuel pressure exceeds the predetermined limit, the fuel pushes the ball that compresses the spring and some of the fuel can be discharged to the tank.
- the "start-stop" systems by which the engine stops completely when the vehicle is stationary and which equips the new diesel vehicles cause much more frequent pressure variations and the limiter must open each time the engine is started. .
- the simple ball and spring limiter is no longer suitable because mechanically too unstable. Indeed, rather than linearly moving along the compression axis of the spring, the limiter can also undergo radial oscillations, torsional movements of the spring or any other combination of which interfere with the optimal operation and generate noise.
- the present invention aims to remedy the disadvantages mentioned above by proposing a simple and economical solution.
- the invention provides a fuel pump module for a vehicle comprising a body defining a low pressure space in which is arranged a pump at the outlet of which is placed a pressure limiter.
- the pressure limiter comprises a tubular body extending along a main axis between a front end, which is arranged a valve seat in the center of which opens a fuel return channel, and a rear remote end, the limiter further comprising a core provided with a shutter member arranged sliding in the tubular body between a closed position, in which its front face is in complementary support against the seat closing the return channel and, an open position in which its front face is away from the seat allowing the evacuation of a portion of the fuel to the low pressure space.
- the core is further provided with an elastic member permanently urging the shutter member to the closed position.
- Said front face of the shutter member is a flat disc surface.
- an elastomeric seal, disc, or O-ring may be interposed between said disc front face and the limiter seat.
- the elastic element is a helical spring axially compressed between the rear face of the shutter element, face opposite said front face, and the rear end of the tubular body.
- the obturator member is fixed to one end of the spring by means of a protuberance provided on its rear face and allowing a complementary engagement with the last turn of the spring so as to fix the shutter member to the spring.
- the protuberance may be a cylinder wall.
- the core may comprise another end member arranged opposite the obturator member, between the rear end of the body and the spring.
- the obturator member and said other end member are identical and symmetrically arranged and held at opposite ends of the spring so that the core formed by the spring, the obturator member and said other end member is symmetrical which can to be arranged in the tubular body so that any one of the two members cooperates with the seat.
- said rear end is provided with a rear opening through which the core can be inserted.
- the limiter is then provided with at least one flexible arm, but more generally a plurality, extending from the periphery of the rear opening towards the front end of the body to a free end.
- the arm moves radially away when the core is inserted and resiliently folds behind the core when fully inserted so that the core is held in a closed position between the shutter member resting against the seat and said other member. end against which the arm is braced, the spring being compressed.

- a rocker and float level device is arranged to determine the amount of fuel C remaining in the tank.
- the high pressure fuel C leaves the bowl 12 via a high pressure line 18 which passes through the lid 14.
- the tubular connections of the high pressure line 18 are integral with the lid 14.
- the module 10 further comprises a pressure limiter 20 arranged, in the example chosen to illustrate this description, in the thickness of the lid 14.
- the limiter 20 comprises a tubular body 22 extending along a main axis A substantially perpendicular to the high pressure line 18 between a front end 24, which is arranged a valve seat 26, and a rear end 28 remote from the high pressure line 18.
- the seat 26 is a complementary surface such for example a toric surface or a flat surface annular transverse to the main axis A.
- a return pipe 30 extends between the high pressure pipe 18 and the first end 24 of the body 22 where it opens at the center of the seat 26. Between the two ends 24, 28, the body 22 is perforated 32 inwards and outwards of the bowl 12.
- the rear end 28 of the body 22 is provided with a circular rear opening 34 around which extend towards the first end 24 and in a slightly centripetal manner, elongate and flexible arms 36. While extending, the arms 36 are slightly closer to the main axis A. They are provided at their free end endings 38 forming an imaged manner, a hand at almost right angle with the arm extended, the palm being oriented towards forward. As visible on the Figures 3 and 4 , the body 22 and the arms 36 are molded plastic integrally with the lid 14.
- the limiter 20 also comprises a mobile core as detailed on the figure 2 .
- the core comprises a helical compression spring 40 provided at each end thereof with a tip 42.
- the end pieces 42 are strictly identical and, as such, marked with the same reference numeral 42. They are made of plastic molded, they have a flat disc face 44 provided on one side with a cylindrical portion 46 of axis perpendicular to the disc face 44.
- the cylindrical portion 46 has substantially the inner diameter of the spring 40 so that each endpiece 42 can be maintained at one end of the spring 40 by inserting its cylindrical portion 46 in the last turn of the spring 40.
- the assembly of the spring 40 and the two ends 42 forms a perfectly symmetrical core 48. Many alternatives can easily be developed as to the mode of attachment of the ends and the spring.
- the cylindrical portion could be wider to receive the spring.
- the choice to achieve a symmetrical assembly has advantages that will be explained further, but nothing prevents to equip the spring of different tips, even a single tip.
- the seal may for example be a flat seal or an O-ring.
- the symmetrical core 48 is placed in the body 22 after having inserted axially A through the rear opening 34.
- the arms 36 have slightly deformed by moving apart to let the core 48 This is inserted until the tip 42 located at the front comes into complementary contact with the seat 26 and is then blocked.
- the front end 42 is a shutter member of the return channel 30.
- the insertion is continued by compressing the spring 40 until the tip 42 located at the rear has passed the free ends of the arms 36 and that the arms 36 elastically resume their free form and that the endings 38 are placed against the disc face 44 of the rear end 42.
- the endings 38 here before the "hands" provide a stable support against the rear face 44 and for this purpose can be made in various forms such as the corner, the T or other. Moreover, the great advantage of producing a symmetrical core 48 appears immediately since it can be inserted indifferently into the body 22 without the need for any identification or keying system.
- the spring 40 is compressed between the disc face 44 which is further pressed against the seat 26 and which thus closes the return channel 30, and the rear disc face 44 against which the arms 36 are braced.
- the compression of the spring 40 creates a bearing force F1 of the tip 42 before the seat 26.
- the fuel C flows in the high pressure line 18 it exerts on the tip 42 before a force F2 opposing that 4.
- the limiter 20 is held in the closed position PF.
- the force F2 that it exerts on the front end 42 vain F1 force exerted by the spring 40 so that the spring 40 is compressed and that the front end 42 is pushed back as according to the figure 7 and move away from the seat 26.
- the limiter 20 is then in the open position PO and fuel C under pressure can then escape by flowing through the return channel 30 and back into the low pressure space 16 by passing through the openings 32 of the body 22 of the limiter 20.

Description
The present invention relates to the fuel pump module of a vehicle and more particularly to the pressure limiter which equips such a module.
In the fuel tank of a vehicle, a pump draws fuel at atmospheric pressure and sends it compressed to the vehicle engine injection system. The pump is arranged in a pumping module. The output of the pump is connected to a high pressure line and a pressure regulator whose simple version is a normally closed pressure limiter. Under the effect of too high pressure in the high pressure line, the limiter opens and allows some of the fuel to return to the tank and thus keep the fuel in the injection system under a limit value pressure. Conventional pressure limiters have a calibrated spring that holds a ball against a conical valve seat in the center of which opens a return channel to the reservoir. When the fuel pressure exceeds the predetermined limit, the fuel pushes the ball that compresses the spring and some of the fuel can be discharged to the tank. The "start-stop" systems by which the engine stops completely when the vehicle is stationary and which equips the new diesel vehicles cause much more frequent pressure variations and the limiter must open each time the engine is started. . The simple ball and spring limiter is no longer suitable because mechanically too unstable. Indeed, rather than linearly moving along the compression axis of the spring, the limiter can also undergo radial oscillations, torsional movements of the spring or any other combination of which interfere with the optimal operation and generate noise.
The present invention aims to remedy the disadvantages mentioned above by proposing a simple and economical solution.
For this purpose, the invention provides a fuel pump module for a vehicle comprising a body defining a low pressure space in which is arranged a pump at the outlet of which is placed a pressure limiter. The pressure limiter comprises a tubular body extending along a main axis between a front end, which is arranged a valve seat in the center of which opens a fuel return channel, and a rear remote end, the limiter further comprising a core provided with a shutter member arranged sliding in the tubular body between a closed position, in which its front face is in complementary support against the seat closing the return channel and, an open position in which its front face is away from the seat allowing the evacuation of a portion of the fuel to the low pressure space. The core is further provided with an elastic member permanently urging the shutter member to the closed position. Said front face of the shutter member is a flat disc surface. Alternatively, an elastomeric seal, disc, or O-ring may be interposed between said disc front face and the limiter seat.
In addition, the elastic element is a helical spring axially compressed between the rear face of the shutter element, face opposite said front face, and the rear end of the tubular body.
In a particular construction the obturator member is fixed to one end of the spring by means of a protuberance provided on its rear face and allowing a complementary engagement with the last turn of the spring so as to fix the shutter member to the spring. The protuberance may be a cylinder wall.
In addition, the core may comprise another end member arranged opposite the obturator member, between the rear end of the body and the spring.
It is particularly advantageous that the obturator member and said other end member are identical and symmetrically arranged and held at opposite ends of the spring so that the core formed by the spring, the obturator member and said other end member is symmetrical which can to be arranged in the tubular body so that any one of the two members cooperates with the seat.
In addition, said rear end is provided with a rear opening through which the core can be inserted. The limiter is then provided with at least one flexible arm, but more generally a plurality, extending from the periphery of the rear opening towards the front end of the body to a free end. The arm moves radially away when the core is inserted and resiliently folds behind the core when fully inserted so that the core is held in a closed position between the shutter member resting against the seat and said other member. end against which the arm is braced, the spring being compressed.
More particularly the tubular body is made of molded plastic material with the body of the module.
