Attachment of thebattery pack 30 to thebattery pack seat 23 electrically connects thebattery connection terminal 35 and the mainbody connection terminal 27. This electrically connects thepower terminal 72 of thebattery pack 30 and thepower terminal 70 of the drivermain body 20. Thecommunication connector 73 of thebattery pack 30 and thecommunication connector 71 of the drivermain body 20 are also electrically connected. - The
motor 40 is supplied with voltage of thebattery pack 30 through thepower terminals controller 50 outputs a drive signal, thedriver 41 drives themotor 40. - When the user pulls the
trigger switch 25 and supplies theoperation switch 42 with power, thecontroller 50 authenticates thebattery pack 30 in accordance with a battery authentication program stored in thememory 60. When thebattery pack 30 is authenticated, thecontroller 50 provides thedriver 41 with a drive signal to operate themotor 40. - The
controller 50 performs a battery authentication process that will now be described with reference toFig. 5 . - The
controller 50 sequentially executes steps S11 to S14 in accordance with a battery authentication program. - To authenticate the
battery pack 30, the battery authentication program includes a battery identification information acquisition step (step S11). In step S11, thecontroller 50 acquires the battery identification information from the battery identificationinformation holding unit 37 of thebattery pack 30, and the battery identificationinformation acquisition unit 52 holds the battery identification information. The battery authentication program includes an authentication step (step S12) performed by thebattery authentication unit 51. In step S12, thebattery authentication unit 51 authenticates the battery identification information held by the battery identificationinformation acquisition unit 52 based on battery authentication information held by the battery authenticationinformation holding unit 61. Thebattery authentication unit 51 authenticates thebattery pack 30 when the battery authentication information and the battery identification information are the same. Further, the battery authentication program includes motor control steps performed on themotor 40 based on the authentication result of step S12. When thebattery pack 30 is authenticated in step S12, thecontroller 50 proceeds to step S13 and outputs a drive signal that operates themotor 40 in a normal manner. When thebattery pack 30 is not authenticated in step S12, thecontroller 50 proceeds to step S13 and outputs a drive signal that restricts operation of themotor 40. When operation of themotor 40 is restricted, thecontroller 50 may drive themotor 40 at a low speed or stop operation of themotor 40. - When the
battery pack 30 is not authenticated in step S12, thecontroller 50 provides theindicator 43 with a notification signal. This activates theindicator 43 to generate an indication allowing for the user to recognize that thebattery pack 30 was not authenticated. Theindicator 43 may generate, for example, a warning sound. Theindicator 43 may also generate, for example, a visual warning. - The battery authentication
information holding unit 61 of thememory 60 may hold battery authentication information for a number of battery packs in the battery authenticationinformation holding unit 61 of thememory 60. In such a case, thebattery authentication unit 51 of thecontroller 50 authenticates battery identification information based on the battery authentication information for a number of battery packs. In this manner, a number of battery packs having different battery identification information may be authenticated to operate the drivermain body 20. - The
electric drill driver 10 of the present embodiment has the advantages described below. - (1) The
electric drill driver 10 includes the drivermain body 20 and thebattery pack 30. Thebattery pack 30 is attached in a removable manner to the drivermain body 20. The drivermain body 20 includes themotor 40, thecontroller 50, and thememory 60. Thememory 60 stores the battery authentication program and includes the battery authenticationinformation holding unit 61. Thebattery pack 30 includes the battery identificationinformation holding unit 37. When the user pulls thetrigger switch 25 of the drivermain body 20, thecontroller 50 executes the battery authentication program. The battery authentication program has thecontroller 50 perform a battery identification information acquisition step, a battery authentication step, and a motor control step. When the user attempts to use theelectric drill driver 10, thecontroller 50 of theelectric drill driver 10 authenticates thebattery pack 30. When thebattery pack 30 is authenticated, thecontroller 50 controls and drives themotor 40. Thus, when the attachedbattery pack 30 holds battery identification information that differs from battery authentication information held by the battery authenticationinformation holding unit 61, theelectric drill driver 10 cannot be normally operated when pulling thetrigger switch 25. Since a battery pack that can be authenticated is needed to operate theelectric drill driver 10, theft of theelectric drill driver 10 may be deterred. Consequently, the user only needs to attach thebattery pack 30 to the drivermain body 20 and pull thetrigger switch 25 in a normal manner to use theelectric drill driver 10. - (2) The driver
main body 20 includes thecontroller 50 and thememory 60. Thecontroller 50 is formed by a microcontroller. Thememory 60 stores the control programs for theelectric drill driver 10 and the battery authentication program. The battery authenticationinformation holding unit 61 of thememory 60 holds the battery authentication information. When thecontroller 50 executes the battery authentication program of thememory 60, thecontroller 50 configures thebattery authentication unit 51 and the battery identificationinformation acquisition unit 52. The battery identificationinformation holding unit 37 of thebattery pack 30 holds the battery identification information. When the user pulls thetrigger switch 25 of the drivermain body 20, thecontroller 50 executes the battery authentication program. In this configuration, when the user pulls thetrigger switch 25, thecontroller 50 executes the battery authentication program and authenticates thebattery pack 30 based on the battery authentication information of thememory 60. Thus, theelectric drill driver 10 does not need an authentication device or an authentication code input unit. Further, theelectric drill driver 10 allows for authentication to be performed with just the drivermain body 20 and thebattery pack 30. Thus, theelectric drill driver 10 defers theft with a simple structure. - (3) The driver
main body 20 includes themotor 40, thecontroller 50, thememory 60, and theindicator 43. Thememory 60 holds the battery authentication program. Further, the battery authenticationinformation holding unit 61 of thememory 60 holds the battery authentication information. The battery identificationinformation holding unit 37 of thebattery pack 30 holds the battery identification information. When the user pulls thetrigger switch 25 of the drivermain body 20, thecontroller 50 executes the battery authentication program. In this configuration, when the user pulls thetrigger switch 25, thecontroller 50 executes the battery authentication program to acquire the battery identification information of thebattery pack 30 and authenticate thebattery pack 30 based on the battery authentication information. When a battery pack cannot be authenticated, thecontroller 50 keeps themotor 40 stopped and controls theindicator 43 to indicate so. Thus, when theelectric drill driver 10 does not function even though thetrigger switch 25 is pulled, the user may easily recognize whether or not the operation failure results from an authentication error. This improves the convenience of theelectric drill driver 10 for the user. - (4) The driver
main body 20 includes themotor 40, thecontroller 50, and thememory 60. Thememory 60 stores the battery authentication program. The battery authenticationinformation holding unit 61 of thememory 60 holds the battery authentication information. The battery identificationinformation holding unit 37 of thebattery pack 30 holds the battery identification information. When the user pulls thetrigger switch 25 of the drivermain body 20, thecontroller 50 executes the battery authentication program and authenticates thebattery pack 30. When a battery pack cannot be authenticated, thecontroller 50 may control themotor 40 to produce rotation at a low speed. Thus, when the user pulls thetrigger switch 25 and theelectric drill driver 10 produces low-speed rotation, the user may easily recognize whether or not the low-speed rotation results from an authentication error. This improves the convenience of theelectric drill driver 10 for the user. - (5) The driver
main body 20 includes themotor 40, thecontroller 50, and thememory 60. Thememory 60 includes the battery authentication program. The battery authenticationinformation holding unit 61 of thememory 60 holds the battery authentication information for a number of battery packs. The battery identificationinformation holding unit 37 of thebattery pack 30 holds the battery identification information. When the user pulls thetrigger switch 25 of the drivermain body 20, thecontroller 50 executes the battery authentication program and acquires the battery identification information of thebattery pack 30 to authenticate thebattery pack 30 based on the battery identification information for different battery packs in thememory 60. When thebattery pack 30 is authenticated, thecontroller 50 controls themotor 40 to function in a normal manner. This configuration allows the driver main body to authenticate a number of battery packs having different battery identification information. Thus, theelectric drill driver 10 may be shared by a number of users having different battery packs. - A second embodiment of an
electric drill driver 10 will now be described focusing on differences from theelectric drill driver 10 of the first embodiment. To avoid redundancy, like or same reference numerals are given to those components that are the same as the corresponding components of the first embodiment. Such components will not be described in detail. - In the
electric drill driver 10 of the first embodiment, thememory 60 of the drivermain body 20 includes the battery authenticationinformation holding unit 61, and thebattery pack 30 includes the battery identificationinformation holding unit 37. In the second embodiment, thememory 60 of a drivermain body 80 includes the main body identificationinformation holding unit 62. Further, abattery pack 90 includes a mainbody authentication unit 91, a main body authenticationinformation holding unit 92, and a main body identificationinformation acquisition unit 93. - The configuration of the driver
main body 80 and thebattery pack 90 will now be described with reference toFig. 6 . - The
battery pack 90 includes the mainbody authentication unit 91, the main body authenticationinformation holding unit 92, and the main body identificationinformation acquisition unit 93. - The driver
main body 80 includes thecontroller 50 and thememory 60. - The
memory 60 stores a control program that controls thecontroller 50. The main body identificationinformation holding unit 62 of thememory 60 holds main body identification information. - The
controller 50 is formed by, for example, a microcontroller. - When the user pulls the
trigger switch 25 and supplies theoperation switch 42 with power, thecontroller 50 sends the main body identification information, which is held in the main body identificationinformation holding unit 62, to thebattery pack 90 in accordance with a control program stored in thememory 60. Thebattery pack 90 authenticates the drivermain body 80. Thebattery pack 90 sends the authentication result of the drivermain body 80 to the drivermain body 80. When the drivermain body 80 is authenticated in thebattery pack 90, thecontroller 50 receives the authentication result and sends a drive signal to thedriver 41 to operate themotor 40. - The
battery pack 90 performs a main body authentication process that will now be described with reference toFig. 7 . - In step S21, the
battery pack 90 acquires, with the main body identificationinformation acquisition unit 93, the main body identification information from the main body identificationinformation holding unit 62 of thememory 60 in the drivermain body 80 through thecommunication connector 73 and thecommunication connector 71. The main body identificationinformation acquisition unit 93 holds the acquired main body identification information. In step S22, the mainbody authentication unit 91 authenticates the main body identification information held in the main body identificationinformation acquisition unit 93 based on the main body acquisition information held in the main body authenticationinformation holding unit 92. The mainbody authentication unit 91 authenticates the drivermain body 80 when the main body authentication information and the main body identification information are the same. The mainbody authentication unit 91 authenticates the drivermain body 80. When the drivermain body 80 is authenticated in step S23, the mainbody authentication unit 91 proceeds to step S23 and sends the authentication result to thecontroller 50 of the drivermain body 80 through thecommunication connector 73 and thecommunication connector 71. In step S25, thecontroller 50 outputs a drive signal to operate themotor 40 in a normal manner. When the drivermain body 80 is not authenticated in step S22, the mainbody authentication unit 91 proceeds to step S24 and sends the authentication result to thecontroller 50. In step S26, thecontroller 50 outputs a drive signal that restricts operation of themotor 40. - The device authenticated by the
battery pack 90 does not have to be theelectric drill driver 10. For example, thebattery pack 90 may authenticate a charger. When thebattery pack 90 authenticates a charger, thebattery pack 90 sends the authentication result to the charger so that the charger executes a control for starting a charging operation. When thebattery pack 90 cannot authenticate the charger, the charger receives the authentication result from thebattery pack 90 and does not perform charging. - The
electric drill driver 10 of the present embodiment has advantages (1) to (5) of theelectric drill driver 10 of the first embodiment. More specifically, theelectric drill driver 10 of the present embodiment performs authentication with a simple operation and deters theft with a simple configuration. In addition, theelectric drill driver 10 has the following advantage. - (6) The

Thememory 60 includes the main body identificationinformation holding unit 62. Thebattery pack 90 includes the mainbody authentication unit 91, the main body authenticationinformation holding unit 92, and the main body identificationinformation acquisition unit 93. When the user pulls thetrigger switch 25 of the drivermain body 80, thecontroller 50 sends the main body identification information of the main body identificationinformation holding unit 62 to thebattery pack 90. The main body identificationinformation acquisition unit 93 acquires and holds the main body identification information. The mainbody authentication unit 91 authenticates the main body authentication information of the main body authenticationinformation holding unit 92 to authenticate the drivermain body 80. Then, the mainbody authentication unit 91 sends the authentication result to thecontroller 50. Thecontroller 50 controls themotor 40 based on the authentication result from the mainbody authentication unit 91. In theelectric drill driver 10, thebattery pack 90 authenticates the drivermain body 80. Thus, theelectric drill driver 10 is operable only when thebattery pack 90 is combined with an authenticated driver main body. This deters theft.
