RISER TENSIONER SYSTEM FOR OFF SHORE OIL PLATFORMS AND
PETROLEUM PRODUCTION PROCESSES

[0001] This application claims the benefit of, and incorporates by reference, U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 61/544,834 filed on Oct. 7, 2011.
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0002] The invention relates to the field of petroleum production. The invention relates to the field of underwater petroleum production and petroleum wells and offshore platforms. More particularly the invention relates to the field of riser tensioner systems.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0003] There is a need for riser tensioner systems which are economically manufacturable, provide beneficial performance and robust lifetimes. There is a need for improved riser tensioner systems and a method of economically providing riser tensioner systems. There is a need for a robust riser tensioner system and method of making. There is a need for economic and high performance riser tensioner system bearings and methods for making high performance riser tensioner system bearings.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0004] In an embodiment, the invention includes a method of making a riser tensioner system. The method preferably includes providing a fluid cylinder, the fluid cylinder for applying a force on a riser. The riser is preferably a fluid conduit for drilling and/or extraction of petroleum products from underwater. The fluid cylinder preferably has a first riser end and a distal second foundation end. The method preferably includes providing a cylinder riser bearing, the cylinder riser bearing having a first riser side nonelastomeric bearing member and a distal second cylinder side nonelastomeric bearing member. The first riser side nonelastomeric bearing member and the distal second cylinder side nonelastomeric bearing member are vulcanized mold bonded together with a mold cured elastomer intermediate. The mold cured elastomer intermediate contains a plurality of nonelastomer interleaved shims with the mold cured elastomer intermediate bonded between the nonelastomer interleaved shims. The mold cured elastomer intermediate has a cylinder riser bearing elastomer first bonding surface positioned proximate to the first riser side nonelastomeric bearing member and a cylinder riser bearing elastomer second bonding surface positioned proximate to the distal second cylinder side nonelastomeric bearing member. The method includes providing a cylinder foundation bearing, the cylinder foundation bearing having a first foundation side nonelastomeric bearing member and a distal second cylinder side nonelastomeric bearing member. The first foundation side nonelastomeric bearing member and the distal second cylinder side nonelastomeric bearing member are vulcanized mold bonded together with a second mold cured elastomer intermediate. The second mold cured elastomer intermediate contains a plurality of nonelastomer interleaved shims with the second mold cured elastomer intermediate bonded between the nonelastomer interleaved shims. The second mold cured elastomer intermediate has a cylinder foundation bearing elastomer first bonding surface positioned proximate to the first foundation side nonelastomeric bearing member and a cylinder foundation bearing elastomer second bonding surface positioned proximate to the distal second cylinder side nonelastomeric bearing member. The method includes disposing the cylinder riser bearing between the fluid cylinder and the riser with the first riser side nonelastomeric bearing member proximate the riser and the distal second cylinder side nonelastomeric bearing member proximate the riser tensioner system fluid cylinder. The method includes disposing the cylinder foundation bearing between the fluid cylinder and a platform foundation with the first foundation side nonelastomeric bearing member proximate the platform foundation and the distal second cylinder side nonelastomeric bearing member proximate the fluid cylinder, wherein the force is applied between the riser and the platform foundation through the cylinder foundation bearing and the cylinder riser bearing.
[0005] In an embodiment the invention includes a riser tensioner system. The riser tensioner system preferably includes a fluid cylinder, the fluid cylinder for applying a force on a riser from a platform foundation. The riser is preferably a fluid conduit for drilling and/or extraction of petroleum products from underwater. The fluid cylinder preferably has a first riser end and a distal second foundation end. The riser tensioner system preferably includes a cylinder riser bearing, the cylinder riser bearing having a first riser side nonelastomeric bearing member and a distal second cylinder side nonelastomeric bearing member. The first riser side nonelastomeric bearing member and the distal second cylinder side nonelastomeric bearing member are vulcanized mold bonded together with a mold cured elastomer intermediate containing a plurality of nonelastomer interleaved shims. The mold cured elastomer intermediate being bonded between the nonelastomer interleaved shims and having a cylinder riser bearing elastomer first bonding surface positioned proximate to the first riser side nonelastomeric bearing member and a cylinder riser bearing elastomer second bonding surface positioned proximate to the distal second cylinder side nonelastomeric bearing member. The riser tensioner system includes a cylinder foundation bearing, the cylinder foundation bearing having a first foundation side nonelastomeric bearing member and a distal second cylinder side nonelastomeric bearing member. The first foundation side nonelastomeric bearing member and the distal second cylinder side nonelastomeric bearing member are vulcanized mold bonded together with a second mold cured elastomer intermediate containing a plurality of nonelastomer interleaved shims. The second mold cured elastomer intermediate being bonded between the nonelastomer interleaved shims and having a cylinder foundation bearing elastomer first bonding surface positioned proximate to the first foundation side nonelastomeric bearing member and a cylinder foundation bearing elastomer second bonding surface positioned proximate to the distal second cylinder side nonelastomeric bearing member. The cylinder riser bearing provides for the connecting of the fluid cylinder to a riser with the first riser side nonelastomeric bearing member for connecting to a riser and the distal second cylinder side nonelastomeric bearing member grounded to the fluid cylinder. The cylinder foundation bearing provides for the connecting of the fluid cylinder to a platform foundation with the first foundation side nonelastomeric bearing member for connecting to a platform foundation and the distal second cylinder side nonelastomeric bearing member grounded to the fluid cylinder. Wherein a force is applied between a connected riser and a platform foundation through the cylinder foundation bearing and the cylinder riser bearing.
[0006] In an embodiment the invention includes a fluid cylinder bearing. The fluid cylinder bearing preferably provides for the transferring a tensioning force from a fluid cylinder to a riser. The fluid cylinder bearing has a first side nonelastomeric bearing member and a distal second fluid cylinder side nonelastomeric bearing member. The first side nonelastomeric bearing member and the distal second fluid cylinder side nonelastomeric bearing member are vulcanized mold bonded together with a mold cured elastomer intermediate containing a plurality of nonelastomer interleaved shims. The mold cured elastomer intermediate being bonded between the nonelastomer interleaved shims and having a bearing elastomer first bonding surface positioned proximate to the first side nonelastomeric bearing member and a bearing elastomer second bonding surface positioned proximate to the distal second cylinder side nonelastomeric bearing member. The fluid cylinder bearing preferably has a substantially constant stiffness in an operational cocking direction wherein the fluid cylinder bearing inhibits an application of a fluid cylinder bearing cocking moment to a cylinder fluid seal of the riser tensioner fluid cylinder.
[0007] In an embodiment, the invention includes a method of making a fluid cylinder bearing. The method includes providing a first side nonelastomeric bearing member. The method includes providing a second fluid cylinder side nonelastomeric bearing member. The method includes providing a plurality of nonelastomer interleave shims. The method includes disposing the first side nonelastomeric bearing member, the second fluid cylinder side nonelastomeric bearing member, and the nonelastomer interleave shims in a mold with the nonelastomer interleave shims oriented between a first bonding surface of the first side nonelastomeric bearing member and a second distal bonding surface of the second cylinder side nonelastomeric bearing member. The method includes bonding an elastomer to the first bonding surface of the first side nonelastomeric bearing member and the second distal bonding surface of the second cylinder side nonelastomeric bearing member and the oriented nonelastomer interleave shims to provide a fluid cylinder bearing having a substantially constant stiffness in an operational cocking direction of the first side nonelastomeric bearing member relative to the second cylinder side nonelastomeric bearing member.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT

[0022] Reference will now be made in detail to the present preferred embodiments of the invention, examples of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
[0023] FIG. 1 illustrates a tension leg platform for use in petroleum production, such as in off shore location with the platform on top of the water with the petroleum well drilled in the earth below the water. FIG. 1 illustrates platform foundation 10 for use in producing petroleum. Preferably, platform foundation 10 is secured to the ocean floor 11 by a plurality of tendons 12. A plurality of risers 14 extend between the individual wells in template 16 and a deck foundation 18 of platform foundation 10. Riser 14 and platform foundation 10 are flexibly connected to permit relative motion between riser 14 and platform foundation 10 that occurs because of wave action on the platform foundation 10, and that riser 14 rises up from the ocean floor 11. FIG. 2 illustrates a top 22 of a riser 14 with lower end 24 threaded to connect with a riser joint in a conventional manner.
[0024] A collar tensioner ring 40 on the riser 14 provides for the connection of riser tensioners 38. Riser tensioners 38 of the riser tensioner system 100 are preferably riser tensioners 38 comprised of a fluid cylinder 102 which contain working fluids such as gas and/or liquid and provides a force between the movable foundation of platform foundation 10 and the riser 14. [0025] Preferably, with the riser tensioner system 100 fluid cylinders 102 are connected to the deck foundation 18 by elastomeric bearings 110 with movement provided between the fluid cylinders 102 and deck foundation 18 as the arms 37 of fluid cylinders 102 extend and retract to maintain a uniform tension on riser 14. Elastomeric bearings 110 also connect the ends of arms 37 to tensioner ring 40 to permit motion between riser tensioners 38 and tensioner ring 40.
[0026] Riser tensioners 38, acting through the elastomeric bearings 110 and the tensioner ring 40 of the riser 14 provide a continuous upward tension on riser 14 despite relative movement of deck foundation 18. The application of continuous upward tension on riser 14 eliminates the threat of buckling, crimping or otherwise damaging the riser 14.
[0027] In an embodiment the invention includes a method of making a riser tensioner system 100. The method preferably includes providing a fluid cylinder 102, the fluid cylinder 102 for applying a force on a riser 14. The riser 14 is preferably a fluid conduit for drilling and/or extraction of petroleum products from underwater. The fluid cylinder 102 preferably has a first riser end 102a and a distal second foundation end 102b. providing a fluid cylinder, said fluid cylinder for applying a force on a riser, said fluid cylinder having a first riser end and a distal second foundation end;
providing a cylinder riser bearing, said cylinder riser bearing having a first riser side nonelastomeric bearing member and a distal second cylinder side nonelastomeric bearing member, said first riser side nonelastomeric bearing member and said distal second cylinder side nonelastomeric bearing member vulcanized mold bonded together with a mold cured elastomer intermediate, said mold cured elastomer intermediate containing a plurality of nonelastomer interleaved shims with said mold cured elastomer intermediate bonded between said nonelastomer interleaved shims, said mold cured elastomer intermediate having a cylinder riser bearing elastomer first bonding surface positioned proximate to said first riser side nonelastomeric bearing member and a cylinder riser bearing elastomer second bonding surface positioned proximate to said distal second cylinder side nonelastomeric bearing member;
providing a cylinder foundation bearing, said cylinder foundation bearing having a first foundation side nonelastomeric bearing member and a distal second cylinder side nonelastomeric bearing member, said first foundation side nonelastomeric bearing member and said distal second cylinder side nonelastomeric bearing member vulcanized mold bonded together with a second mold cured elastomer intermediate, said second mold cured elastomer intermediate containing a plurality of nonelastomer interleaved shims with said second mold cured elastomer intermediate bonded between said nonelastomer interleaved shims, said second mold cured elastomer intermediate having a cylinder foundation bearing elastomer first bonding surface positioned proximate to said first foundation side nonelastomeric bearing member and a cylinder foundation bearing elastomer second bonding surface positioned proximate to said distal second cylinder side nonelastomeric bearing member; disposing said cylinder riser bearing between said fluid cylinder and said riser with said first riser side nonelastomeric bearing member proximate said riser and said distal second cylinder side nonelastomeric bearing member proximate said fluid cylinder; and
disposing said cylinder foundation bearing between said fluid cylinder and a platform foundation with said first foundation side nonelastomeric bearing member proximate said platform foundation and said distal second cylinder side nonelastomeric bearing member proximate said fluid cylinder, wherein said force is applied between said riser and said platform foundation through said cylinder foundation bearing and said cylinder riser bearing.
2. The method of claim 1 wherein said cylinder riser bearing elastomer first bonding surface of comprises a spherical shell segment bonding surface.
3. The method of claim 1 wherein said cylinder riser bearing elastomer second bonding surface comprises a spherical shell segment bonding surface.
4. The method of claim 1 wherein said cylinder foundation bearing elastomer first bonding surface comprises a spherical shell segment bonding surface.
5. The method of claim 1 wherein said cylinder foundation bearing elastomer second bonding surface comprises a spherical shell segment bonding surface.
6. The method of claim 1 wherein said fluid cylinder includes a cylinder fluid seal for containing fluid within said fluid cylinder while providing for relative motion between a first fluid cylinder member and a second fluid cylinder member, with said cylinder fluid seal having a maximum cylinder fluid seal operational moment (SOM).
7. The method of claim 6 with said cylinder riser bearing having a cylinder riser bearing cocking moment wherein said cylinder riser bearing inhibits an application of a cylinder riser bearing cocking moment proximate said cylinder fluid seal maximum cylinder fluid seal SOM.
8. The method of claim 6 with said cylinder foundation bearing having a cylinder foundation bearing cocking moment wherein said cylinder foundation bearing inhibits an application of a cylinder foundation bearing cocking moment proximate said cylinder fluid seal maximum cylinder fluid seal SOM.
9. The method of claim 1 wherein said cylinder riser bearing elastomer first bonding surface comprises a spherical shell segment bonding surface with a radius RCRFS and said cylinder riser bearing elastomer second bonding surface comprises a spherical shell segment bonding surface with a radius RCRSS, with RCRFS>RCRSS.
10. The method of claim 1 wherein said cylinder riser bearing elastomer first bonding surface comprises a spherical shell segment bonding surface with a radius RCRFS and said cylinder riser bearing elastomer second bonding surface comprises a spherical shell segment bonding surface with a radius RCRSS, with RCRFS<RCRSS.
11. The method of claim 1 wherein said cylinder foundation bearing elastomer first bonding surface comprises a spherical shell segment bonding surface with a radius RCFFS and said cylinder foundation bearing elastomer second bonding surface comprises a spherical shell segment bonding surface with a radius RCFSS, with RCFFS>RCFSS.
12. The method of claim 1 wherein said cylinder foundation bearing elastomer first bonding surface comprises a spherical shell segment bonding surface with a radius RCFFS and said cylinder foundation bearing elastomer second bonding surface comprises a spherical shell segment bonding surface with a radius RCFSS, with RCFFS<RCFSS.
13. A riser tensioner system, said riser tensioner system including:
a fluid cylinder, said fluid cylinder for applying a force on a riser from a platform force foundation, said fluid cylinder having a first riser end and a distal second foundation end;
a cylinder riser bearing, said cylinder riser bearing having a first riser side nonelastomeric bearing member and a distal second cylinder side nonelastomeric bearing member, said first riser side nonelastomeric bearing member and said distal second cylinder side nonelastomeric bearing member vulcanized mold bonded together with a mold cured elastomer intermediate containing a plurality of nonelastomer interleaved shims, said mold cured elastomer intermediate bonded between said nonelastomer interleaved shims and having a cylinder riser bearing elastomer first bonding surface positioned proximate to said first riser side nonelastomeric bearing member and a cylinder riser bearing elastomer second bonding surface positioned proximate to said distal second cylinder side nonelastomeric bearing member;
a cylinder foundation bearing, said cylinder foundation bearing having a first foundation side nonelastomeric bearing member and a distal second cylinder side nonelastomeric bearing member, said first foundation side nonelastomeric bearing member and said distal second cylinder side nonelastomeric bearing member vulcanized mold bonded together with a second mold cured elastomer intermediate containing a plurality of nonelastomer interleaved shims, said second mold cured elastomer intermediate bonded between said nonelastomer interleaved shims and having a cylinder foundation bearing elastomer first bonding surface positioned proximate to said first foundation side nonelastomeric bearing member and a cylinder foundation bearing elastomer second bonding surface positioned proximate to said distal second cylinder side nonelastomeric bearing member;
said cylinder riser bearing for connecting said fluid cylinder to a riser with said first riser side nonelastomeric bearing member for connecting to a riser and said distal second cylinder side nonelastomeric bearing member grounded to said fluid cylinder; and
said cylinder foundation bearing for connecting said fluid cylinder to a platform foundation with said first foundation side nonelastomeric bearing member for connecting to a platform foundation and said distal second cylinder side nonelastomeric bearing member grounded to said fluid cylinder, wherein a force is applied between a riser and a platform foundation through said cylinder foundation bearing and said cylinder riser bearing.
14. The riser tensioner system of claim 13 wherein said cylinder riser bearing elastomer first bonding surface of comprises a spherical shell segment bonding surface.
15. The riser tensioner system of claim 13 wherein said cylinder riser bearing elastomer second bonding surface comprises a spherical shell segment bonding surface.
16. The riser tensioner system of claim 13 wherein said cylinder foundation bearing elastomer first bonding surface comprises a spherical shell segment bonding surface.
17. The riser tensioner system of claim 13 wherein said cylinder foundation bearing elastomer second bonding surface comprises a spherical shell segment bonding surface.
18. The riser tensioner system of claim 13 wherein said fluid cylinder includes a cylinder fluid seal for containing fluid within said fluid cylinder while providing for relative motion between a first fluid cylinder member and a second fluid cylinder member, with said cylinder fluid seal having a maximum cylinder fluid seal operational moment (SOM).
19. The riser tensioner system of claim 18 with said cylinder riser bearing having a cylinder riser bearing cocking moment wherein said cylinder riser bearing inhibits an application of a cylinder riser bearing cocking moment proximate said cylinder fluid seal maximum cylinder fluid seal SOM.
20. The riser tensioner system of claim 18 with said cylinder foundation bearing having a cylinder foundation bearing cocking moment wherein said cylinder foundation bearing inhibits an application of a cylinder foundation bearing cocking moment proximate said cylinder fluid seal maximum cylinder fluid seal SOM.
21. The riser tensioner system of claim 13 wherein said cylinder riser bearing elastomer first bonding surface of comprises a spherical shell segment bonding surface with a radius RCRFS and said cylinder riser bearing elastomer second bonding surface comprises a spherical shell segment bonding surface with a radius RCRSS, with RCRFS>RCRSS.
22. The riser tensioner system of claim 13 wherein said cylinder riser bearing elastomer first bonding surface of comprises a spherical shell segment bonding surface with a radius RCRFS and said cylinder riser bearing elastomer second bonding surface comprises a spherical shell segment bonding surface with a radius RCRSS, with RCRFS<RCRSS.
23 The riser tensioner system of claim 13 wherein said cylinder foundation bearing elastomer first bonding surface comprises a spherical shell segment bonding surface with a radius RCFFS and said cylinder foundation bearing elastomer second bonding surface comprises a spherical shell segment bonding surface with a radius RCFSS, with RCFFS>RCFSS.
24. The riser tensioner system of claim 13 wherein said cylinder foundation bearing elastomer first bonding surface comprises a spherical shell segment bonding surface with a radius RCFFS and said cylinder foundation bearing elastomer second bonding surface comprises a spherical shell segment bonding surface with a radius RCFSS, with RCFFS<RCFSS.
25. A fluid cylinder bearing, said fluid cylinder bearing for transferring a tensioning force from a fluid cylinder to a riser, said fluid cylinder bearing having:
a first side nonelastomeric bearing member;
a distal second fluid cylinder side nonelastomeric bearing member, said first side nonelastomeric bearing member and said distal second fluid cylinder side nonelastomeric bearing member vulcanized mold bonded together with a mold cured elastomer intermediate containing a plurality of nonelastomer interleaved shims, said mold cured elastomer intermediate bonded between said nonelastomer interleaved shims and having a bearing elastomer first bonding surface positioned proximate to said first side nonelastomeric bearing member and a bearing elastomer second bonding surface positioned proximate to said distal second cylinder side nonelastomeric bearing member, said fluid cylinder bearing having a substantially constant stiffness in an operational cocking direction wherein said fluid cylinder bearing inhibits an application of a fluid cylinder bearing cocking moment to a cylinder fluid seal of said fluid cylinder.
26. The fluid cylinder bearing of claim 25 wherein said bearing elastomer first bonding surface comprises a spherical shell segment bonding surface.
27. The fluid cylinder bearing of claim 25 wherein said bearing elastomer second bonding surface comprises a spherical shell segment bonding surface.
28. The fluid cylinder bearing in claim 25 wherein said cylinder fluid seal contains fluid within said fluid cylinder while providing for relative motion between a first fluid cylinder member and a second fluid cylinder member, with said cylinder fluid seal having a maximum cylinder seal operational moment (SOM) and said riser tensioner fluid cylinder bearing having an inhibited bearing cocking moment RBCM, wherein RBCM < 0.35 SOM.
29. The fluid cylinder bearing of claim 25 wherein said bearing elastomer first bonding surface comprises a spherical shell segment bonding surface with a radius RCRFS and said bearing elastomer second bonding surface comprises a spherical shell segment bonding surface with a radius RCRSS, with RCRFS>RCRSS.
30. The fluid cylinder bearing of claim 25 wherein said bearing elastomer first bonding surface comprises a spherical shell segment bonding surface with a radius RCFFS and said bearing elastomer second bonding surface comprises a spherical shell segment bonding surface with a radius RCFSS, with RCFFS<RCFSS.
31. A method of making a fluid cylinder bearing, said method including:
providing a first side nonelastomeric bearing member;
providing a second fluid cylinder side nonelastomeric bearing member;
providing a plurality of nonelastomer interleave shims;
disposing said first side nonelastomeric bearing member , said second fluid cylinder side nonelastomeric bearing member, and said nonelastomer interleave shims in a mold with said nonelastomer interleave shims oriented between a first bonding surface of said first side nonelastomeric bearing member and a second distal bonding surface of said second cylinder side nonelastomeric bearing member; and bonding an elastomer to said first bonding surface of said first side nonelastomeric bearing member and said second distal bonding surface of said second cylinder side nonelastomeric bearing member and said oriented nonelastomer interleave shims to provide a fluid cylinder bearing having a substantially constant stiffness in an operational cocking direction of said first side nonelastomeric bearing member relative to said second cylinder side nonelastomeric bearing member.
32. The method of claim 31 wherein said riser tensioner bearing first bonding surface comprises a spherical shell segment bonding surface.
33. The method of claim 31 wherein said second bonding surface comprises a spherical shell segment bonding surface.
34. The method of claim 31 wherein a fluid cylinder fluid seal contains a fluid within a fluid cylinder while providing for relative motion between a first fluid cylinder member and a second fluid cylinder member, with said cylinder fluid seal having a maximum cylinder seal operational moment (SOM) and said bearing having an inhibited bearing cocking moment RBCM wherein RBCM< 0.35 SOM.
35. The method of claim 31 wherein said bearing first bonding surface comprises a spherical shell segment bonding surface with a radius RCRFS and said bearing second bonding surface comprises a spherical shell segment bonding surface with a radius RCRSS, with RCRFS>RCRSS.
36. The method of claim 31 wherein said bearing first bonding surface comprises a spherical shell segment bonding surface with a radius RCFFS and said bearing second bonding surface comprises a spherical shell segment bonding surface with a radius RCFSS, with RCFFS<RCFSS.
