- open cavity 104 and the front hole 106 are coaxial along the depth of the plug 22.
- the screw element 105 is screwably coupled in a threaded hole 107 of the plate 101 so that the plate 101 is forced into the open cavity 104 and the two facing inside surfaces of the open cavity 104 of the plug 22 are moved apart (see Figure 16 ).
- the opposing plate 101 has the shape of truncated pyramid and the plug 22 has an open cavity 104 which is accordingly shaped to match the plate 101.
- the front hole 106 and the open cavity 104 are interrupted along the axial extension of the plug 22 by a pair of parallel clefts 108 located on opposite sides of an axis of longitudinal extension X22 of the plug 22 so as to allow greater elastic deformation of the plug 22 when the plate 101 is forced into it.
- the plug 22 is partly separated along the middle of it in order to increase its elasticity and to allow large transverse elastic deflection such as to increase its size and the force it applies to the wings 24 and 25.
- FIGS 11 and 12 illustrate a further variant embodiment of the plug 22.
- the plug 22 has three wing sectors 24a, 24b, 24c, 25a, 25b, 25c along its longitudinal extension and two front sectors of the vertical walls 29 (formed at the ends of the plug 22) for snap fitting to the mounting member 2.
- This structure of the plug 22 not only provides a large surface for stable contact with the mounting member 2 but also larger sized wings 24 and 25 allowing a greater opposing force to be applied to the flanges 15 and 16 of the secondary channel 17.
- This invention also provides a method for fitting a control and operating unit 1 for sliding doors or windows.
- the method comprises at least the following steps:
- the step of coupling the plug 22, the spacer 19 and the mounting member 2 is achieved by snap fastening.
- the method comprises a step of positioning the unit 1 relative to the hole 3a in the wall 5 or 6 of the upright 3.
- the positioning step is achieved by sliding the unit 1 longitudinally in the channel 17 in order to obtain the coupling between the housing 8 of the control box 7 and the shaft 9 of the handle 10.
- the method may comprises a step of fixing the unit 1 in the groove 4.
- This step is achieved by housing screw means 21 in coaxial cavities or holes 2f, 20 and 23 made in the mounting member 2, in the spacer 19 and in the plug 22, respectively.
- Each screw element 21 is forced to be locked in the bottom wall 18 of the groove 4 in order to fix the control and operating unit 1 definitively.
- the step of fastening the unit 1 using the plug 22 of Figures 11 to 17 comprises, after the step of longitudinal positioning, a step of:
- Lifting the plate 101 in this way also increases the transversal dimension of the plug 22 (thanks to the special shape of the plate 101 and of the open cavity 104 of the plug 22), by elastic deformation (see arrows, Figure 16 ) in such a way as to bring the pair of flexible wings 24, 25 into contact with, and squeezed against, the transversal flanges 15, 16 of the secondary channel 17.
- the locking structure of this embodiment is extremely advantageous if the profile section has a central thermal break structure with rods of plastic material joining the profile sections and positioned centrally to form a portion of the bottom wall of the groove in the upright.
- a control and operating unit structured in this way thus fully achieves the present aims.

Description
- This invention relates to a control and operating unit for sliding doors or windows.
- In the technical field of sliding doors or windows with frames of aluminium or PVC, to which wooden coverings may be applied, if necessary, hardware known in the jargon of the trade as "multi-point locking hardware" is widely used.
- This term denotes the control and operating unit applied to the upright of the door or window sash.
- This control and operating unit essentially comprises:
- a suitably shaped rod-like mounting member which is associated, frontally, with the inside of a main groove defined by two longitudinal walls of an upright of the sash to form a sort of wall which partly closes the front of the upright;
- a control box fixed centrally to the first member and equipped with a housing for receiving the shaft of a handle and with a kinematic unit for transmitting the movement imparted by the handle to
- an operating rod positioned along and parallel to the first member, movable in both directions relative to the selfsame mounting member and connected to the kinematic unit of the control box.
- Associated with the operating rod there are one or more bosses or closing members protruding from corresponding slots made in the rod-like member, to be engaged, in use, with striker elements fixed to the front of the upright of the fixed frame of the door or window (opposed to the upright of the sash).
- The operating unit made in this way must be mounted inside the edge profile of the sash by housing it in the main groove formed by the side walls of the sash upright.
- The main groove comprises at least two flanges projecting transversely from the side walls of the sash upright to define a pair of undercuts forming a longitudinal secondary channel.
- Substantially, the main groove must contain (that is, hide) the control box and the movable operating rod thanks to the presence of the main member which, after assembly, constitutes the front wall which remains in view.
- At present, the entire unit is fixed in the groove using suitably configured striker plates inserted longitudinally along the secondary channel.
- After they have been housed in the secondary channel, the control and operating unit is placed in the main groove to be able to centre the corresponding perforated housings relative to the striker plates already inserted in the secondary channel.
- After centring, the unit is fixed to the sash upright using screws inserted through the bottom face of the profile groove: the plates enable the unit to be held in place transversely and partly frontally (done mainly by the screws) by abutting against the flanges which define the channel.
- This type of solution for fixing the control and operating unit has some disadvantages, however.
- It should be noted first of all that the control and operating unit must be centred correctly relative to two distinct reference points:
- the width calculated on the bottom face of the main groove;
- the housing in the control box relative to a transversal through hole made in a side wall of the upright and into which the handle control shaft is inserted.
- The first centring reference for the unit is necessary for correct alignment relative to the striker elements located on the upright of the fixed frame.
- The second reference, correlated also with the first reference, is necessary for correct connection of the control box to the handle used to drive the movable rod.
- Based on this, the installer must house all the striker plates in the secondary channel and must position the plates one by one along the groove, correlating them both with the position of the hole in the mounting member and with the above mentioned centring references, by pre-tightening the fixing screws.
- This operation thus requires considerable time and effort and is not always precise for the final assembly of the door or window: this increases the overall cost of the door or window and makes the operation of the operating unit potentially less durable in time.
- To this must be added the warehouse costs for storing separately the components needed for all the different door or window profiles currently available on the market.
- Another disadvantage of this control and operating unit is the low mechanical durability of the coupling between the striker plates and the mounting member.
- In
WO 2007/147503 is disclosed a closing system of a door and window casing comprising a fixed part suitable for anchoring to the wing along a longitudinal groove formed in an edge section member of the wing and one movable part having a plurality of closing elements spaced apart from each other. the fixed part has a plurality of securing elements for fastening to the wing. The securing elements are movable between a mounting position at which they can be frontally inserted into said groove when the fixed part is brought to the mounting position on the wing and an operating position at which they are in engagement with an undercut formed in the groove so that a link is created between the closing system and wing. - Another closing system is disclosed in
EP 0 056 484 . The closing system comprises U-shaped holders fixed to a front bar unit covering a groove. The U-shaped holders have resilient tongues engaging relief-cut ridges in the groove; the U-shaped holders have free longitudinal edges comprising anchoring projections for engagement with the bottom of the groove. - This invention has for an aim to provide a control and operating unit for sliding doors or windows that overcomes the above mentioned disadvantages of the prior art.
- More specifically, it is an aim of this invention to provide a control and operating unit for sliding doors or windows which can be easily and precisely fitted on a sash.
- A further aim of the invention is to provide a control and operating unit for sliding doors or windows which has good mechanical durability and maintains its serviceability over time.
- These aims are fully achieved by the control and operating unit for sliding doors or windows which constitutes the object of this invention, as characterized in the appended claims.
- Thanks to the spacer and plug applied to the mounting member, the control and operating unit can be applied to the mounting member quickly and easily without having to perform any other operations before fitting the sash.
- The flexible wings allow the unit to be quickly fitted to the sash, while simultaneously giving the certainty that the unit is fixed securely and at the correct position inside the groove.
- These possibilities also make it quicker to carry out the subsequent steps of alignment with the handle because all that needs to be done is to slide the unit along the secondary channel and fix it in place with screw means.
- These and other features of the invention will become more apparent from the following detailed description of a preferred, non-limiting example embodiment of it, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an upright of a sliding sash of a door or window to which the control and operating unit of the invention is applied; -

member 2, the control andoperating unit 2 comprises at least twospacer elements 19 and twoplugs 22 located at the corresponding ends of the mountingmember 2. - For example,
Figure 2 shows a control and operating unit with sixspacer elements 19 and six plugs 22. - Preferably (see
Figures 3 ,6 and from 7 to 10) one portion of theplug 22 is configured to also house a part of the mountingmember 2 above thecavity 26 which houses thespacer element 19. - In light of this, that portion of the
plug 22 is provided with snap fastening means 27 and 28 for engaging and retaining the mountingmember 2 on both sides. - More in detail, the engagement and retaining means comprise a pair of
opposed teeth vertical walls 29 of the plug 22: that way, theteeth member 2 to theplug 22 on both sides. - In a first embodiment, shown in
Figure 3 , theflexible wings plug 22 are formed at the base of theplug 22 and on two opposite, parallel sides of theselfsame plug 22. - It should be noted that the pair of
flexible wings plug 22 to pass through to the other side of the pair offlanges secondary channel 17 where they then snap back to their original, stable shape and are locked inside the channel 17 (as shown inFigure 3 ). - In an alternative embodiment (see
Figure 6 ), theflexible wings plug 22 are a direct extension of thevertical walls 29 of theplug 22 itself. - In light of this, the pair of
flexible wings plug 22 in such a way as to vary, or reduce, the gap between them so as to allow theplug 22 to pass through to the other side of the pair offlanges secondary channel 17 where they then snap back to their original, stable shape and are locked inside thechannel 17 itself. - Preferably, the
flexible wings plug 22 and in a static, furthest apart configuration sufficient to at least come into abutment, in use, with the inside of theflanges secondary channel 17 of the profile, and so as to hold theplug 22 within thesecondary channel 17. - Alternatively, the
flexible wings plug 22 and in a static, furthest apart configuration sufficient to come into abutment, in use, with the inside of theflanges secondary channel 17 at the corner where theselfsame flanges profile walls plug 22 within thesecondary channel 17 but also centre theplug 22 relative to the width of the edge profile of the upright 3 (defined by the bottom wall 18), seeFigure 6 . - In an alternative embodiment (see
Figure 3 ), the bottom of theplug 22 has abase portion 30 which protrudes downwardly and which can be coupled, in use, to alongitudinal indentation 31 formed in thebottom wall 18 of themain groove 4, in such a way as to centre the mountingmember 2 relative to the width of the edge profile of theupright 3, that is, of thebottom wall 18. - Preferably (see
Figures 4 and 5 ), thespacer element 19 has an annular shape and thecentral cavity 26 formed in theplug 22 has a matching shape, that is, cylindrical, to allow them to be mutually coupled stably. - Preferably, the
spacer element 19 comprises anelongate member 32 which is integral with the remaining annular portion. - In light of this, the
elongate member 32 extends radially from the annular element to allow it to be stably associated with the mountingmember 2 by plastic deformation. - In essence, the
elongate member 32 is provided with apin 33 which can be coupled in a cavity in the mountingmember 2 and locked therein. - In effect, the
pin 33 is riveted in place in such a way as to lock thespacer 19 at the required position. - Preferably, the
plug 22 has a pair of open slots orapertures 34 formed on opposite sides of thecentral cavity 26. - These two
apertures 34 allow housing the elongate member 32 (protruding from the mounting member 2) and the operating rod 11 (which is also free to slide) if theplug 22 is positioned in a zone where therod 11 is present. - Preferably, each plug 22 is made of a thermally insulating material.
- The
plug 22 of insulating material creates a thermal break between the profile and the operating andcontrol unit 1 to improve the overall thermal insulation of the door or window. - Preferably, for the purposes of correct positioning, the
spacer 19 has a predetermined depth or thickness P correlated with the depth or thickness P1 of the body of theplug 22. - The sum of these two dimensions, of
spacer 19 and plug 22, is correlated with the depth P2 of themain groove 4 of theupright 3 in order for the control andoperating unit 1 to be correctly positioned in height, once fitted, so that it is always at the correct height both relative to the zone where the shaft 9 of thehandle 10 is coupled to thehousing 8 of thecontrol box 7, and relative to the striker elements on the fixed frame in order to obtain the correct coupling in use. - In a second constructional embodiment, the fastening means 14 comprise stabilizing
means 100 by which the position adopted by the mountingmember 2 on theupright 3 can be fixed. - The stabilizing means 100 are interposed between the
plug 22 and the mountingmember 2 and are configured to lift theplug 22 relative to thebottom wall 18 of thesecondary channel 17 and to increase the transversal dimension of theplug 22, by elastic deformation, in such a way as to allow the pair offlexible wings transversal flanges Figures 11 to 17 ). - Preferably, the stabilizing means 100 (alternative to the use of the screw element 21) comprise (see
Figures 11 to 17 ): - an opposing
plate 101 provided with at least twoinclined surfaces open cavity 104 of theplug 22 and, in use, facing thebottom wall 18; - a
screw element 105 for locking theplug 22. - In light of this, the
screw element 105, in use, passes through the mounting member 2 (by way of the hole 20) and through afront hole 106 of theplug 22 giving onto thecavity 104 which receives theplate 101. - It should be noted that the
open cavity 104 and thefront hole 106 are coaxial along the depth of theplug 22. - The
screw element 105 is screwably coupled in a threadedhole 107 of theplate 101 so that theplate 101 is forced into theopen cavity 104 and the two facing inside surfaces of theopen cavity 104 of theplug 22 are moved apart (seeFigure 16 ). - In light of this, the opposing
plate 101 has the shape of truncated pyramid and theplug 22 has anopen cavity 104 which is accordingly shaped to match theplate 101. - Preferably, the
front hole 106 and theopen cavity 104 are interrupted along the axial extension of theplug 22 by a pair ofparallel clefts 108 located on opposite sides of an axis of longitudinal extension X22 of theplug 22 so as to allow greater elastic deformation of theplug 22 when theplate 101 is forced into it. - In other words, the
plug 22 is partly separated along the middle of it in order to increase its elasticity and to allow large transverse elastic deflection such as to increase its size and the force it applies to thewings -
Figures 11 and 12 illustrate a further variant embodiment of theplug 22. - The
plug 22 has threewing sectors member 2. - This structure of the
plug 22 not only provides a large surface for stable contact with the mountingmember 2 but also largersized wings flanges secondary channel 17. - This invention also provides a method for fitting a control and
operating unit 1 for sliding doors or windows. - The method comprises at least the following steps:
- preparing a control and
operating unit 1 comprising at least one mountingmember 2, acontrol box 7 associated with the mountingmember 2 and connected to an operatingrod 11 which is positioned along and parallel to the mountingmember 2 and movable in both directions relative to theselfsame mounting member 2; - preparing and applying to the mounting
member 2 at least onespacer element 19 protruding from the mounting member 2 (Figure 4 ); - stably coupling to the
spacer element 19 and to the mounting member 2 aplug 22 for positioning and centring the mountingmember 2 in themain groove 4; theplug 22 has a pair offlexible wings 24 and 25 (Figure 5 ); - housing the control and
operating unit 1 in themain groove 4 of the edge profile of theupright 3 and coupling theplug 22 to thesecondary channel 17 by elastic deformation of thewings plug 22 can then be stably housed in the selfsame secondary channel 17 (Figures 3 and6 ). - Preferably, the step of coupling the
plug 22, thespacer 19 and the mountingmember 2 is achieved by snap fastening. - Preferably, after the step of housing in the
secondary channel 17, the method comprises a step of positioning theunit 1 relative to thehole 3a in thewall upright 3. - In light of this, the positioning step is achieved by sliding the
unit 1 longitudinally in thechannel 17 in order to obtain the coupling between thehousing 8 of thecontrol box 7 and the shaft 9 of thehandle 10. - Preferably, after the longitudinal positioning step, the method may comprises a step of fixing the
unit 1 in thegroove 4. - This step is achieved by housing screw means 21 in coaxial cavities or
holes member 2, in thespacer 19 and in theplug 22, respectively. - Each
screw element 21 is forced to be locked in thebottom wall 18 of thegroove 4 in order to fix the control andoperating unit 1 definitively. - Alternatively, the step of fastening the
unit 1 using theplug 22 ofFigures 11 to 17 comprises, after the step of longitudinal positioning, a step of: - screwing the screw element 105 (a screw) from the outside of the mounting
member 2 in such a way as to lift theplate 101 and the bottom of theplug 22 relative to thebottom wall 18 of thesecondary channel 17. - Lifting the
plate 101 in this way also increases the transversal dimension of the plug 22 (thanks to the special shape of theplate 101 and of theopen cavity 104 of the plug 22), by elastic deformation (see arrows,Figure 16 ) in such a way as to bring the pair offlexible wings transversal flanges secondary channel 17. - Thanks to this procedure, the operating unit is locked securely in place without damaging the bottom wall of the profile section. The locking structure of this embodiment is extremely advantageous if the profile section has a central thermal break structure with rods of plastic material joining the profile sections and positioned centrally to form a portion of the bottom wall of the groove in the upright.
- A control and operating unit structured in this way thus fully achieves the present aims.
- The evident advantages of this structure are:
- greater ease of fitting thanks to preassembly of the plug on the mounting member before it is housed in the groove of the upright;
- fitting the plug is quick, sure and precise, thanks to the presence of the spacer element and the shape of the plug, which allows snap fastening;
- the flexible wings of the plug structure allows the plug to be quickly inserted into the channel, holding the unit securely in place transversely while at the same time allowing it to slide longitudinally along the upright to reach the required, final position;
- the flanges and bottom portion of the plug are shaped in such a way that the unit can be centred quickly relative to the groove since the plug automatically snaps into place so the unit is in its correct final position;
- the constructional architecture of the plug and spacer guarantees high mechanical durability and lasting operating precision.
