Definitions
- the invention relates to a method for approving a transaction by a computer system, a computer program product, a signal sequence and a chip card.
- SMS-TAN comprises the use of the SMS transmission channel, with an SMS with a TAN being sent to the customer's mobile phone after the customer has instructed the bank executing the transfer. The customer then enters the TAN received via SMS online in order to activate his transaction.
- the invention is based on the object of creating an improved method for approving a transaction by a computer system, a corresponding computer program product, a corresponding signal sequence and a chip card for providing a transaction number for a transaction to be approved by a computer system.
- a method for approving a transaction by a computer system comprising the transmission of transaction details from the computer system to a chip card, the transaction details including specific information about the transaction.
- the transaction details are received by the chip card and the transaction details and a transaction number are then displayed on a display of the chip card, the transaction number being specific to the transaction.
- the transaction number is then received again by the computer system.
- the computer system validates the transaction number and then releases the transaction if the received transaction number has been validated as valid.
- Embodiments of the invention could have the advantage that the method for approving the transaction is highly secure without the burden of having to carry an additional device such as a chip card reader with them to carry out transactions, for example.
- the transaction number is displayed directly on a display of the chip card, which the user always carries with him anyway. Since the transaction details are also shown on the display of the chip card, a user is certain that the transaction number shown to him is actually intended for the purpose which is specified in the transaction details. The user does not run the risk of transmitting a transaction number to the computer system for any transaction without knowing exactly for which specific transaction this number is to be valid.
- the method is particularly suitable in the case of a large number of transactions to be carried out for each of which a transaction number is necessary, since the user can always identify the correct transaction number for each transaction in a targeted manner.
- transaction details is understood as any information that characterizes a transaction in banking. This includes, for example, an account number and / or a routing number of the transaction recipient, a transaction amount, a time at which the transaction is to be carried out or at which the transaction was requested, as well as account information relating to the holder who wants to carry out the transaction.
- the transaction details can also be limited to parts of the information mentioned, for example only to a few digits of the recipient's account number.
- transaction numbers can also be used to enable changes to the settings of user accounts, such as changing a user name or changing an exemption order. In this case there is no transaction in the sense of a money transfer, but the release of an action that is directly related to the bank account. This should also be understood under the term transaction details.
- the method further comprises the step of authenticating the transaction details by the chip card, the authentication checking whether the transaction details originate from the computer system, the transaction details and the transaction number being displayed on the display only in the event of successful authentication.
- authentication includes verification of a signature on the transaction details.
- the computer system thus signs the transaction details before transferring the transaction details to the chip card.
- the chip card is then able to check whether or not the transaction details actually come from the computer system in a trustworthy manner.
- the transaction details are provided with a so-called "Message Authentication Code” (MAC).
- MAC Message Authentication Code
- a secret key can be used which has been individually defined once for the computer system and the chip card. This key can then be permanently and securely stored both in the computer system and in the chip card.
- the MAC can then be calculated from the data to be backed up (the transaction details) and the key.
- Authentication of the transaction details could ensure that the transaction details and a transaction number are only displayed on the chip card display if it is ensured that the transaction details actually originate from the computer system.
- a transaction number is generated by the chip card. This could in turn have the advantage that information transmitted from the computer system to the chip card does not have to be secured in a special way. Should a third party gain unauthorized possession of this information, i.e. the transaction details, they cannot do anything with it. He just knows that a transaction is pending is not able to misuse this information due to the lack of the transaction number.
- the transaction number is generated from the transaction details.
- the transaction number could be generated from a key such as the key described above, the key being accessible to both the computer system and the smart card.
- HOTP HMAC-Based One Time Password Algorithm
- the fact that the transaction number is generated from the transaction details ensures that the chip card and computer system can generate the transaction number independently of one another in a transaction-specific manner. The additional exchange of possibly secret information is therefore not necessary in order to generate the transaction number.
- the transaction details include a current time, this current time being included in the generation of the transaction number. This could have the advantage that the diversity of the generated transaction number is further increased. Even if e.g. If transfers are made several times, which concern the same recipient with the same amount, this will always lead to different transaction numbers due to different times. In the case of virtually identical transactions, it can therefore be avoided that identical transaction numbers are used for this purpose.
- the transaction details comprise a value of a counter, the value of the counter being included in the generation of the transaction number.
- the counter is stored in the computer system, the value of the counter being changed in a predetermined manner with each transmission of new transaction details, for example being increased by one.
- the computer system and the chip card it is possible for the computer system and the chip card to manage identical counters separately from one another and thus for new ones with each transmission Transaction details change the value of this respective counter in a predetermined manner. This could also help ensure that the diversity of the generated transaction number is guaranteed for identical transactions.
- the variant in which the current time is included in the generating transaction number has the advantage that it is possible to dispense with any type of counter management. This considerably simplifies the corresponding transaction number generation process.
- the transaction details of the chip card are received via an interface for near-field communication.
- the transaction details could be received from a mobile telecommunications device such as a cell phone.
- mobile telephones could often be equipped with near field communication capabilities, so that the transaction details can be transmitted from the computer system to the mobile telephone and from the mobile telephone to the chip card via its near field communication interface. Since users usually always have their mobile phone and chip card with them anyway, a highly secure method for approving a transaction can also be provided here without the burden of having to carry additional devices with them to approve the transaction.
- the security of the method cannot be compromised by tampering with the mobile phone.
- a smartphone infected with malware would not jeopardize the security of the method, since only data that is not security-critical is transferred between the computer system and the chip card.
- a change in the transaction details by the malware would not make the process any more unsafe either, since in this case the user would not confirm the transaction to the computer system at all due to the display of the changed transaction details on the chip card display. So the user would notice that the transaction details are incorrect, so that it would not transmit the transaction number, if at all displayed, to the computer system.
- the same also applies in the event that the data transmission path for the transaction details from the computer system to the mobile phone is compromised, e.g. a router is infected with malware. If the transaction details were to be manipulated in this case, the authentication of the transaction details described above could preferably ensure that the transaction details and / or a transaction number are not displayed on the display of the chip card, since the transaction details do not actually originate from the computer system. Instead, an "error" or a warning could be displayed on the chip card display.
- an application could be installed on the mobile telecommunication device via which the data can be transmitted from the computer system to the mobile telecommunication device by means of a data connection ("app").
- the transaction details could also be transmitted by SMS to the mobile telecommunication device and from there the interface for near-field communication to the chip card.
- the transmission of the transaction details to the mobile telecommunication device comprises a visual or acoustic provision of a code that can be detected visually or acoustically by the mobile telecommunication device.
- the computer system provides the code in a visual manner by displaying a QR code on a screen of the user over the Internet.
- This QR code then includes either the transaction details themselves or an Internet address, via which the mobile telecommunications device can in turn call up the transaction details from the Internet.
- This code can be visually captured by a camera included in many telecommunications devices.
- the visual or acoustic provision of a code that can be detected visually or acoustically by the mobile telecommunication device can have the advantage that a separate communication channel between the computer system and the mobile telecommunication device is not necessary.
- the mobile telecommunication device could also gain access to the code "offline” without any communication connection "over the air” through visual or acoustic detection in order to then transmit the transaction details recorded by means of the code to the chip card via the interface for near field communication.
- the invention relates to a computer program product with instructions that can be executed by a processor for carrying out the method steps as described above.
- the invention relates to a signal sequence which, when stored in a computer, represents a sequence of instructions which, when executed on this computer, executes the method described above.
- FIG. 11 shows a schematic view of a system architecture which enables a transaction to be approved by a computer system 100.
- the computer system is, for example, the computer system of a bank which the user wants to induce to carry out a transaction. For example, the user wants to make a bank transfer from his account to another account.
- the user uses his computer 126, which is connected to the computer system 100 via the network 130, for example the Internet.
- the connection is made via the interface 120 of the computer system 100.
- the computer system 100 ensures that only the real account holder can make the money transfer, i.e. the transaction.
- a transaction number is used for this purpose, which the user must again communicate to the computer system via the network 130.
- the user can transmit the transaction number to the computer system 100 via the website of the computer system 100, for example. However, this requires that the user know the transaction number.
- the mobile phone 124 is equipped with a near field communication interface, for example an RFID-NFC (Near Field Communication) transponder.
- the user is in possession of a chip card 102 which has an interface 106. This interface is able to receive the data which were transmitted from the mobile phone 124 via its NFC interface.
- the chip card 102 is therefore NFC-capable.
- the chip card 102 is a chip card that was issued by the operator of the computer system 100, that is to say for example the user's house bank.
- the chip card 102 is equipped with a processor 108 which can execute instructions which are stored in the memory 110 of the chip card.
- the chip card 102 is used, in addition to displaying details of the transaction to be carried out, also a transaction number which is to be communicated to the computer system 100 by the user. Only when the entered transaction number goes through the computer system has been determined to be correct, the computer system 100 will approve the transaction.
- the computer system 100 may send transaction details to the cell phone 124 over a data connection over the network 130.
- These transaction details contain, for example, the recipient's account number and bank code, as well as the amount to be transferred, which the user has previously transmitted to the computer system 100 via his computer 126.
- a current time is transmitted at which point in time the computer system 100 received the request to carry out the transaction from the computer 126.
- the transaction details transmitted from the computer system 100 to the mobile phone 124 are now transmitted from the mobile telecommunication device 124 to the chip card 102 via its near-field communication interface.
- the memory 110 of the chip card 102 has a module 114 for authenticating the computer system 100. For example, the transaction details which were transmitted from the computer system 100 to the chip card 102 via the mobile phone 124 are signed.
- the chip card 102 is able to check the signature through the module 114. If the check is successful, a transaction number is generated in memory 110 by a further module 112. In the example of Figure 1 this is the transaction number 2704.
- the said time which was transmitted by the computer system 100 with the transaction details, is included in the generation of the transaction number. If HOTP is used, the generation of the transaction number also includes the secret K shared jointly by the computer system 100 and the chip card 102, which is described in detail below. The fact that the specified time (and possibly a corresponding date) is received ensures that the transaction number generated is unique.
- the TAN 2704 is then displayed on a display, that is to say a display 104 on the chip card 102, along with the transaction details. Likewise, based on the time and date received from computer system 100, a validity interval can be specified which indicates how long the TAN 2704 will be accepted by computer system 100.
- the user With the bank details displayed and the amount displayed on the display 104, the user is now able to check whether the displayed transaction details correspond to the transaction details which he has communicated to the computer system 100 by means of his computer 126. If there is a discrepancy here, the user can be sure that an attempt is being made to falsify a transaction due to unauthorized intervention by third parties. This could be the case if, for example, an unauthorized third computer system has intervened between the user's computer 126 and the computer system, which "phishing" simulates a counterfeit website for the computer system 100 to the user. The user thus believes he is on the Internet page of the computer system 100, but is actually connected to a completely different computer. Nonetheless, the only computer system that can communicate transaction details to smart card 102 is actual computer system 100.
- the computer system 100 will also be able to execute program instructions via its processor 122. These are, for example, program instructions in memory 116, which include a module 112 for TAN generation, for example.
- the module 112 in the computer system 100 corresponds to the module 112 in the chip card 102.
- the memory 116 of the computer system 100 also contains a module for validating the transaction number that was generated here by the computer system 100 and the transaction number that was received from the user. If the two transaction numbers match, the computer system 100 will approve the transaction, that is, in the present example, will initiate the transfer of the money.
- the module 118 for validating the transaction numbers can also contain the functionality of checking a temporal validity of the transaction number received from the user. It could be stipulated that a transaction number must never be older than five minutes.
- the mobile phone 124 Instead of transmitting the transaction details from the computer system 100 to the mobile phone 124 via the network 130, there is the option of using the mobile phone 124 independently of an existing connection to the network 130.
- Usual smartphones have, for example, an optical camera by means of which so-called QR codes 128 can be recorded. For this reason, the QR code 128 is displayed on the screen of the computer 126 via the website of the computer system 100.
- the QR code 128 can for example contain all transaction details.
- the camera of the smartphone 124 can now capture the QR code 128 and transmit the details contained therein to the chip card 102 via the near-field communication interface of the mobile phone 124. It is also possible in this way for the chip card 102 to receive the transaction details.
- the security of the generation of the transaction number can be classified as very high.
- the display of chip card 102 is protected against malware because chip card 102 is a closed system and the content of display 104 cannot be manipulated.
- the user can even in the event that the transaction details have been tampered with by a malware-infected computer or smartphone before they are sent to the smart card uncover this fraud because the display of the chip card cannot be manipulated.
- the fraud is revealed simply by the fact that the user realizes that the transaction details displayed to him do not match the transaction details for which he had requested a transaction.
- the chip card 102 works completely independently of the outside world, since it does not require a direct connection to the computer system 100. In addition, it does not need its own time, because if it is to be included in the generation of the transaction number, it can be transmitted along with the transaction details. This also means that the chip card advantageously does not have to have its own battery.
- the Figure 2 Figure 3 shows a flow chart of a method for releasing a transaction.
- transaction details are transmitted from the computer system to the chip card (step 200).
- the transaction details are received by the smart card in step 202.
- the data received with the transaction details are now authenticated in step 204.
- the computer system signs the transaction details, whereupon the signature is verified by the chip card in step 204. If it is found in step 206 that the authentication has failed, the method ends in step 208. If, however, it is found in step 206 that the data was correctly signed, the method continues with the generation of a transaction number in step 210 .
- the chip card can calculate a TAN in accordance with the HOTP (K, S) rule. S describes the transaction details and K is a secret key that is only known to the computer system and the chip card.
- step 212 the transaction details and the transaction number generated in step 210 are displayed. The user then first checks the transaction details shown on the card display and confirms the transaction with the bank by entering the transaction number.
- step 214 the entered transaction number is received by the computer system and validated in step 216.
- the computer system like the chip card, has generated the transaction number for itself in accordance with the HOTP (K, S) regulation.
- step 218 If it turns out in step 218 that the transaction number entered is incorrect, the method ends in step 220.
- a message could be sent to the user or indicated that he should enter his transaction number correctly again.
- step 218 If the validation in step 218 shows that the transaction number which the user transmitted to the computer system was correct, then in step 222 the transaction is approved by the computer system.

Description
Based One Time Password Algorithm) bekannt.
