Abstract

An electron multiplying apparatus such as an electron multiplying detector, comprising: a housing (2) having a wall defining an enclosure (3), the wall having an inner surface within the enclosure and an outer surface outside the enclosure; a source of electrons (4); an electron multiplier (7) positioned within the enclosure (3) so as to receive electrons (6) from the source of electrons (4) and to emit multiple electrons (9) for each electron (6) received; a plurality of pairs of electrodes (12, 14), each pair comprising a first electrode (12) on the inner surface of the wall and a second electrode (14) on the outer surface of the wall adjacent to the first electrode (12) and separated from the first electrode by the wall.
