Figure 1 shows a game controller apparatus for playing an electronic game. The game controller apparatus comprises a seat 2, a frame 12, pivoting means, grip means 14 and a seat belt 18. The game controller apparatus is adapted to co-operate with a sensor board 4 for playing the electronic game. The sensor board 4 comprises sensor means 6 adapted to detect several different types of pressing events directed at a top surface of the sensor board 4. The sensor board 4 is adapted to control the electronic game based on pressing events detected by the sensor means 6.
The seat 2 is adapted to receive a player of the electronic game. The seat 2 is movably fixed to the frame 12 such that the seat 2 may be moved between a mounting position and a use position with respect to the frame 12. Figure 1 shows the seat 2 in the use position, and Figures 2A and 2B show the seat 2 in the mounting position.
The movement of the seat 2 between the mounting position and the use position is enabled by a mounting hinge 52. In an alternative embodiment connection between the seat and the frame may be provided by a telescopic coupling allowing vertical movement between the seat and the frame.
When the seat 2 is in the mounting position the game controller apparatus is adapted to receive the sensor board 4 in an operational position with respect to the frame 12. In other words, the mounting position of the seat 2 is a position which allows removing and inserting the sensor board 4 between the seat 2 and the frame 12. In the operational position of the sensor board 4 the frame 12 supports the sensor board 4 from below. Playing the electronic game with the game controller apparatus of Figure 1 requires that the sensor board 4 is in the operational position and the seat 2 is in the use position. In Figures 1 , 2A and 2B the sensor board 4 is in the operational position.
Referring to Figures 2A and 2B, the seat 2 comprises contact means 8 operatively connected to a bottom surface of the seat 2. The seat 2 is adapted to be positioned in a gaming position with relation to the sensor board 4. In the gaming position the contact means 8 are capable of co-operating with the sensor board 4 such that the player of the electronic game may, while being received in the seat 2, play the electronic game by tilting the seat 2.
In the embodiment shown in Figures 2A and 2B the contact means 8 comprise four contact elements 85 each having circular cross section. The contact elements 85 are fixedly connected to the bottom surface of the seat 2. The number and location of the contact elements 85 are optimized for the sensor board 4 having sensor means 6 adapted to detect four different types of pressing events directed at a top surface of the sensor board 4. The sensor board 4 is adapted to distinguish whether a pressing event is directed at a right front corner, left front corner, right rear corner or left rear corner of the sensor board 4.
In an alternative embodiment the contact means comprise separate contact elements adapted to be located between the seat and the sensor board. The separate contact elements are not fixed to the seat. In another alternative embodiment it is possible to fix the contact elements at different locations in relation to seat, which allows using of the game controller apparatus with different types of sensor boards.
In Figure 1 the seat 2 is in the gaming position with relation to the sensor board 4. The gaming position is provided by locating the sensor board 4 in the operational position with respect to the frame 12 and locating the seat 2 in the use position with respect to the frame 12. In the gaming position the seat 2 is located on top of the sensor board 4 in a supported position with relation to the sensor board 4 such that the entire weight of the seat 2 is supported by the sensor board 4.
The pivoting means are adapted to allow, in the use position of the seat 2, tilting of the seat 2 with respect to the frame 12 enabling directing of the several different types of pressing events at the top surface of the sensor board 4 when the sensor board 4 is in the operational position with respect to the frame 12. The pivoting means comprise a first pivot 61 shown in Figure 2A and a second pivot 62 shown in Figure 3 which is a back view of the game controller apparatus of Figure 1 .
The first pivot 61 has a pivotal axis extending in a transverse direction in relation with the seat 2. The first pivot 61 is adapted to allow tilting of the seat 2 forward and backward with respect to the frame 12. The second pivot 62 has a pivotal axis extending in a longitudinal direction in relation with the seat 2. The second pivot 62 is adapted to allow tilting of the seat 2 leftward and rightward with respect to the frame 12. Herein, directions forward, backward, leftward and rightward are directions as perceived by a person sitting in the seat 2.
In an alternative embodiment pivoting means comprise a ball joint between the seat and the frame, the ball joint being adapted to allow tilting of the seat leftward and rightward as well as forward and backward with respect to the frame. In another alternative embodiment pivoting means comprise one or more elastic joints between the seat and the frame, wherein tilting of the seat is enabled by elasticity of structures coupling the seat and the frame. An elastic joint may comprise a spring such as a leaf spring or a helical spring.
The grip means 14 are fixed to the frame 12 and are adapted such that the player of the electronic game may use the grip means 14 for raising oneself with respect to the seat 2. The grip means 14 also facilitate tilting of the seat 2 with respect to the frame 12. The grip means 14 comprise a left grip element and a right grip element, each one of which has a side handle 142 and a front handle 144. The side handle 142 extends longitudinally and horizontally with relation to the frame 12. The front handle 144 extends obliquely upwards in a 70° angle in relation with horizontal direction as can be seen in Figure 4 showing a side view of the game controller apparatus. In alternative embodiments the angle in which the front handle extends in relation with horizontal direction may be in the range of 35° to 90°.
The seat belt 18 is adapted to keep the player of the electronic game received in the seat 2. The seat belt 18 is a two-point seat belt, also called a lap belt. The two-point seat belt is connected to the seat 2.
Figure 5 shows an alternative embodiment of a game controller apparatus according to present invention. The alternative embodiment comprises a seat 2', a seat belt 18', and four contact elements 85', but no frame. Instead of having a frame, the game controller apparatus of Figure 5 comprises fastening means adapted to keep the seat 2' in the gaming position with relation to the sensor board 4'. The fastening means comprise a fastening strap 10' adapted to fasten the game controller apparatus to a base 22' such that the sensor board 4' is between the base 22' and the seat 2', the seat 2' being in the gaming position with relation to the sensor board 4'. The base 22' supports the sensor board 4' from below.
In Figure 5 the base 22' is depicted simply as a horizontal line. The base 22' may be for example a table or a bench, or any other piece of furniture having suitable height. In an embodiment the fastening strap 10' is identical to the seat belt 18'.
A method of playing an electronic game comprises a step of positioning a seat in the gaming position with relation to a sensor board, and a step of playing the electronic game by tilting the seat with respect to the sensor board. A sensor board suitable for the method comprises sensor means adapted to detect several different types of pressing events directed at a top surface of the sensor board, the sensor board being adapted to control the electronic game based on pressing events detected by the sensor means. A seat suitable for the method is adapted to receive a player of the electronic game, and comprising contact means operatively connected to a bottom surface of the seat. The seat has a shape that enables the seat to be positioned in a gaming position with relation to the sensor board, the gaming position being a position in which the contact means are capable of cooperating with the sensor board for controlling the electronic game.
In a simple embodiment of the method there is no frame or fastening means limiting movements of the seat in relation to the sensor board. Instead, the seat is positioned freely on top of the sensor board.
It will be obvious to a person skilled in the art that the inventive concept can be implemented in various ways. The invention and its embodiments are not limited to the examples described above but may vary within the scope of the claims.
