Description
Device for connecting a replaceable cutting top part to a tool body
Device in connection with tools The present invention relates to a device in connection with rotary tools for cutting machining and having a replaceable cutting top part and a clamping tool body that has a cylindrical reception part provided with a number of
essentially radial ridges and grooves.
The invention is intended to be applied in connection with rotary tools intended for cutting machining and having a replaceable tip and having a coupling for high loads.
Such similar known products are utilized, among others, by:
- Iscar that has a product called CHAMDRILL, from about 1998. - Seco Tools AB that has a product denominated Crownloc, also from about 1998.
Said known products have a common disadvantage, namely that when great forces arise, these known tool bodies cannot manage to hold the top parts in place, which leads to breakdown, which in turn leads to lower productivity parameters being used than what otherwise would be the case.
As examples of other known solutions,
US 756,339 Al discloses a tool in the form of a dismountable drill wherein the drill tip (B) , via threads, is attachable by screwing to a rear mating drill body (A) . In that connection, internal threads (4) are arranged in the proper drill tip (B) , which makes it cumbersome to produce using the cemented carbide tools utilized today.
US 6,582,164 Bl discloses a drill having a drill tip (10) attachable by screwing and that is, with a radial thread (52), attachable by screwing in a drill holder (14) and the interior mating radial thread thereof. This
clamping is provided by a single thread turn, which seems to be very weak.
US 2008/0193237 Al discloses clamping according to the above-mentioned kind from Iscar, and US 2001/0041089 Al and WO 03/068436 Al, respectively, disclose tool attachment by means of threaded joints. US 2001/0041089 Al concerns a
clamping device for a rotatable cutting tool and in the form of a threaded male member (22) and a threaded female member (24). A thread extends hardly slightly helically and similar to teeth or ridges and valleys of splines, but runs the entire turn around with a fine or coarse pitch.
The same disadvantages that have been said apply also to these.
The main object of the present patent
application is accordingly to provide a device that solves, among others, the problems mentioned above, and that by its unigue connection resists the greater cutting forces, foremost in the form of torque, that arise in cutting machining, when the highest possible productivity is to be attained, in the form of a high rate of cutting.
Said object is achieved by means of a device according to the present invention that essentially is
characterized in that the ridges and the grooves are slightly helical, that the top part has a plug-shaped connection part having mating congruent grooves and ridges, similar to teeth or ridges and valleys of splines, whereby said connection between the grooves and the ridges of the top part and tool body interlocked in the engagement position is self-locking.
The invention is described in the following, reference being made to the appended drawings in the form of a preferred embodiment example, in which
Fig. 1 shows an exploded view of a rotary tool with the cutting top part thereof and the rotary tool body thereof separated from each other in perspective,
Fig. 2 shows the top part in perspective obliquely from behind,
Fig. 3 shows a side view of a tool body,
Fig. 4 shows an end view of the tool body, Fig. 5 shows a section view of a tool body,
Figs. 6 and 7 show examples of clamping elements at the coupling end for a top part,
Figs. 8-9 show a side view and an end view, respectively, of a top part,
Fig. 10 shows side view of top part, and
Fig. 11 shows a section view along the line XI-XI in Fig. 10.
A rotary tool 1 according to the present invention normally consists of two main parts 2, 3, namely a tool body 2, which preferably is manufactured from metal or from another material that has good strength, and a cutting replaceable top part 3, which also preferably is manufactured from metal or from another material having good wear
resistance, for instance cemented carbide.
The tool body is, via its shaft part, connected to a holding tool, which is found in various designs, among which a cylindrical shaft is commonly occurring.
The part of the tool body closest to the shaft part, the chip transportation part, is formed to give support to the top part, without being an obstacle to chips that are created at the cutting edges, as well as to provide a desired distance between the workpiece being machined and the holding tool, e.g., a drill chuck, a milling cutter, a turret, etc.
The connection part of the tool body is formed as a cylindrical recess, having helical ridges that have been formed to give the connection self-locking properties, which arises when the tool is in friction, when the cutting edges are loaded, which prevents the top part from coming loose from its
attachment. By the front side of the ridges being positioned at an angle, in relation to a tangent plane of the cylindrical segment of the connection, that is smaller than 90°, a locking effect in the radial direction between tool body and top part arises.
Briefly, it could be said that the tool body 2 has a cylindrical reception part having mating radial grooves and the top part 3, i.e., the tool, has a plug-shaped
connection part having mating radial grooves, similar to teeth or ridges and valleys of splines.
More precisely, the invention relates to a device 4 in connection with a rotary tool 1 that is intended to provide cutting machining, such as drilling, milling, etc., and that comprises a replaceable top part 3 provided with cutting inserts and a tool body 2 clamping said top part 3.
According to the invention, said tool body 2 has a cylindrical reception part 5 provided with a number of essentially radial ridges 6 and grooves 7. The top part 3 has a plug-shaped connection part 8 provided with a number of mating congruent grooves 9 and ridges 10, similar to teeth or ridges and valleys of splines.
Said ridges 6; 10 and grooves 7; 9 are slightly helical and the connection between the grooves and the ridges of the top part 3 and tool body 2 interlocked in the engagement position is self-locking.
The helix of said ridges, as seen in the direction from the end face 11 of the tool body 2, is twisted in the clockwise direction 13, whereby an increased friction arises when the cutting edges 12 of the top part 3 are loaded in machining by the tool 1 in said direction 13. Furthermore, as seen in the direction of rotation 13 in machining, the front side of the ridges is positioned at an angle, in relation to a tangent plane of the cylindrical segment of the connection,
that is less than 90°, whereby a locking effect arises in the radial direction between the tool body 2 and the top part 3, while the back side of said ridges, as seen in the direction of rotation 13 in machining, slopes at an obtuse angle, preferably approx . 135 ° .
Furthermore, the top part 3 as well as the tool body 2 are provided with helical chip channel parts 14, 15 that allow efficient removal of machined material from the present working spot of the tool in question, e.g., at a drill hole or at a milling working spot.
The top part 3 as well as the tool body 2 are provided with cooling ducts 16, 17 to allow efficient machining of the material without damaging the same and the tool 1 by continuous supply of a suitable cooling liquid, e.g., of a known type, from a pumping station (not shown) .
Finally, a clamping element 18, 19 between the top part 3 and the receiving connection part 5 of the tool body 2 is arranged to detachably hold the top part in place in the tool body in the axial direction 20. Such a clamping element 18, 19 is formed of, e.g., a number of hooks 19 and recesses
18, and which hook 19 is resilient so as to be brought between a position spaced apart from the recess 18 and a received position in the recess 18, respectively.
Upon mounting and interlocking of the tool 1, the connection part in the tool body is pulled apart,
preferably by means of a special tool that prises apart the resilient jaws 21 of the tool body 2. When they are released again, the top part 3, which in examples shown is formed of a drill bit of cemented carbide material, is locked axially by means of the hooks 19 that are received in a mating recess 18 in the top part's 3 inner portion 8A of its cylindrical plug- shaped connection part 8, so that the parts 2, 3 hook on each other and are clamped efficiently to each other in the axial
direction 20. Disconnection is carried out in the opposite order of the described procedure.
The function and nature of the invention should have been understood from what has been described above and shown in the drawings .
Naturally, the invention is not limited to the embodiments described above and shown in the accompanying drawings. Modifications are feasible, particularly as for the nature of the different parts, or by using an equivalent technique, without departing from the protection area of the invention, such as it is defined in the claims.
