Description

  • The present invention relates to a method for producing a ribbon curlable into a bow.
  • There is a known growing tendency to apply bows to gift packages for decorative purposes. In most cases the bows are formed from suitable ribbons known as drawstring ribbons, from which the bow is formed by pulling one end while holding the other end at rest.
  • In particular, a drawstring ribbon is composed typically of two superimposed tapes, between which one drawstring (or two drawstrings) consisting typically of a cord is inserted.
  • The shape of the two tapes presents lateral recesses periodically at fixed distances apart.
  • At each lateral recess an endless ring is provided, which grips the two tapes and the drawstring tightly, but not such as to clamp them together.
  • The two tapes are held tightly with one hand and the drawstring is pulled to form the bow.
  • In addition to the cost of the materials used, the automated production of such a ribbon requires complex and hence costly operations.
  • For particular applications, such as for use as bag handles with an already incorporated drawstring ribbon, which on extending the handles automatically creates a bow, a drawstring ribbon is required having a drawstring longer than the tapes.
  • Automated production of such a drawstring ribbon is even more difficult than ribbons of normal production, as the tapes have to be cut without nicking the central drawstring.
  • Documents US 5,645,902 , US 5,114,761 and US 5,693,381 discloses decorative elements made with ribbons and drawstrings, wherein when the drawstrings are pulled a bow is formed.
  • An object of the present invention is to provide a method for automatically producing a drawstring ribbon having the drawstring longer than the tapes.
  • This and other objects are attained according to the present invention by a drawstring ribbon production method comprising the steps of unwinding at least one tape from a first reel; feeding said at least one tape in a first direction by guide elements; unwinding at least one drawstring from a second reel; feeding said at least one drawstring in said first direction by guide means; aligning said at least one tape with said at least one drawstring; feeding said at least one tape and said at least one drawstring towards a first cutting zone; laterally cutting off at least one portion of said at least one tape; feeding said at least one laterally cut tape and said at least one drawstring to a second cutting zone; feeding said at least one tape between the two blades of a scissor while at the same time feeding said at least one drawstring outside said scissor blades; cutting said at least one tape; clamping said at least one tape; feeding a predetermined length of said at least one drawstring; bringing said at least one tape and said at least one drawstring to a clamping device; joining together an end of said at least one tape and an end of said at least one drawstring; feeding said at least one tape and said at least one drawstring to a station for closing said at least one tape and said at least one drawstring with a ring in proximity to each of said lateral cut of said at least one tape; feeding said at least one tape and said at least one drawstring to a third cutting zone; cutting said drawstring in proximity to said joint between said at least one tape and said at least one drawstring.
  • Further characteristics of the invention are described in the dependent claims.
  • The characteristics and advantages of the present invention will be apparent from the ensuing detailed description of one embodiment thereof, illustrated by way of non-limiting example in the accompanying drawings, in which:
    • Figure 1 shows schematically a drawstring ribbon at rest, in accordance with the present invention;
    • Figure 2 shows schematically a drawstring ribbon in the form of a bow, in accordance with the present invention;
    • Figure 3 shows schematically a drawstring ribbon production line, in accordance with the present invention;
    • Figure 4 shows a first detail of a drawstring ribbon production line, in accordance with the present invention;
    • Figure 5 shows a second detail of a drawstring ribbon production line, in accordance with the present invention.
  • With reference to the accompanying figures, a drawstring ribbon 12 is a ribbon formed with a drawstring 13, consisting of a cord or band fixed at one end 10 to two tapes 15 of paper, fabric, etc. The two tapes 15 face each other and contain between them the drawstring 13. The shape of the tapes 15 comprises lateral recesses 16 periodically at fixed distances apart.
  • At each lateral recess 16 there is provided an endless ring 17 of cord, tape, etc., which tightly grips, but not such as to clamp together, the two tapes 15 and the drawstring 13.
  • According to the present invention, the length of the drawstring 13 is greater than the length of the tapes 15 by at least 10 cm.
  • The machine for forming a drawstring ribbon having the drawstring longer than the tapes comprises two reels 20 of decorative tape 15 which are unwound to feed the production line.
  • The reels 20 are unwound in predetermined steps, passing below a punch unit 21 where two recesses 16 are formed in the sides of the tapes 15.
  • A drawstring 13 is simultaneously unwound from a reel 22 to feed the production line. The drawstring 13 passes below a device 23 which provides a clamping and anchoring system for the drawstring.
  • After punching, the tapes 15 and drawstring 13 are brought together at the point 24 by aligning them in a predetermined arrangement by means of guides.
  • In particular, the drawstring 13 enters a tube 25 which enters and passes through an alignment block 26 while the two tapes pass above and below the block 26.
  • To the side of the block 26 a gripper is positioned for each tape. Hence a gripper 27 is provided for the upper tape and a gripper 28 for the lower tape, which on closing interfere with the block 26, to clamp the tapes 15.
  • The block 26 and the two grippers 27 and 28 are positioned on a slide 29 movable in both senses, according to the direction of movement of the drawstring 13 and the tapes 15.
  • At the exit of the grippers 27 and 28 the drawstring 13 lies in the middle of and centred between the two tapes 15.
  • The two tapes 15 then pass one above and one below a cutting element 30 fixed to the machine structure. The cutting element 30 comprises a fixed element of rectangular shape with a hole 31 at its centre, preferably as wide as possible, such that the drawstring 13 can pass through the hole 31.
  • To the side of the cutting element 30, on the exit side thereof with reference to the tape feed direction, there are provided two vertically movable blades 33 which can approach the cutting element 30 in the manner of scissors but without touching the previously clamped drawstring 13 passing through the hole 31.
  • The cutting element 30 hence consists of a rectangular frame, the (horizontal) upper and lower sides of which form one scissor blade, with the two movable blades 33 forming the other scissor blade. Hence the result is a scissor which on command cuts the upper tape 15 and a scissor which cuts the lower tape 15 when these pass above and below the cutting element 30.
  • When they cut the tapes 15, the two movable blades 33 halt at the level of the upper side and lower side of the cutting element 30, and do not enter the empty space of the hole 31, such as not to nick the drawstring passing through the hole 31.
  • The operation of the device of the invention is apparent from that described and illustrated, and is essentially as follows.
  • On attaining the (previous) ribbon required length, the tapes 15 are clamped by the grippers 27 and 28, whereas the drawstring 13 is not clamped.
  • At this point the tapes 15 are cut.
  • The slide 29 advances in the tape feed direction with the grippers closed, to bring the two cut ends of the decorative ribbon under a bonding and/or gluing device 35, while advancement of the drawstring 13 continues for a predetermined length. The slide 29 serves to carry the tapes, once cut, to the bonding station, and after bonding it returns to its initial position.
  • When the drawstring has advanced through the required distance, bonding takes place, corresponding to the commencement of the next drawstring ribbon, to generate the end connection between the tapes 15 and the drawstring 13.
  • The grippers 27 and 28 open, the tapes 15 and the drawstring 13 advance and the slide 29 recedes.
  • At this point the tapes and drawstrings of the preceding bow advance with the drawstring longer than the tapes, this being not yet cut and being bonded to the beginning of the next bow.
  • After the bonding and gluing device 35 there is positioned the aligning station 36 where the drawstring 13 is aligned with the tapes 15 and a closed metal ring 37 is inserted into the previously formed lateral recesses 16 of the tapes 15 to hold together but not clamp the two tapes 15 and the drawstring 13.
  • The last step is implemented by a clamping gripper 37 and a final cutting device 38, which cuts the drawstring 13 at the point in which it is bonded to the tapes of the next bow, to form the drawstring ribbon with a drawstring longer than the decorative tapes 15.
  • The feed of the tapes 15 and drawstring 13 continues until the required length of the tapes 15 is achieved, to again clamp the tapes 15 by the grippers 27 and 28, then the aforedescribed operations are repeated.
  • The tapes 15 and drawstring 13 are advanced in predetermined steps such that the tapes 15 halt under the punch unit 21 to form the recesses in the tapes, and under the final cutting device 38 to cut the drawstring 13. One or more motors, not shown, are controlled by a control centre, not shown, which also controls all the mechanisms of the production line. This control centre is not described as it can be implemented by an expert of the art after reading the present description.
  • The present machine enables drawstring ribbons to be produced with their drawstring longer than the tapes. It enables the tapes and drawstring to be cut separately. The drawstring can be longer than the tapes by any length.
  • The drawstring ribbon described herein is composed of two tapes and one drawstring, however it can have more than one drawstring, have only one tape, or other varieties not listed here. The production line can be adapted to such variants by modifications within the scope of the expert of the art on reading this description.
  • The materials used for the tapes and drawstring, and the dimensions, can be chosen at will in accordance with requirements and with the state of the art.
