More particularly, it relates to a guiding device for a rock-drilling machine, the rock-drilling machine including a drill portion with a drill bit which has a drill - portion centre axis, and a string portion with a string- portion centre axis, the drill portion and the string portion being interconnected by means of a guiding joint.
- Rock-drilling machines of the kind initially mentioned may be connected by means of a pipe string to a driving device on the outside of a rock that is being drilled.
- the rock- drilling machine is guided while it is being moved in a borehole, by turning the guiding joint in such a way that the drill-portion centre axis takes an angle relative to the string-portion centre axis.
- the guiding joint is designed to change the angle between said centre axes in any direction and is additionally arranged to transmit the torque from the drill bit.
- a guiding device for a rock-drilling machine including a drill portion with a drill bit which has a drill-portion centre axis, and a string portion with a string-portion centre axis, the drill portion and the string portion being interconnected by means of a guiding joint.
- the guiding device is characterized by the drill portion being provided with, between the drill bit and the guiding joint, a guiding support which is arranged to bear against the borehole wall of a borehole.
- a guiding support which is mounted in accordance with the invention makes the achieved curve radius be in proportion to the angular deflection between the drill- portion centre axis and the string-portion centre axis.
- the cause is believed to be that the guiding support subjects the relatively weak rock to smaller radial forces than the radial forces that are applied during drilling without the guiding support, and that the rock thereby resists the radial guiding force to which it is subjected.

- a guiding wheel is particularly usable when the borehole is to be formed with a relatively small curve radius.
- a relatively small curve ra- dius is conditional on the angle between the drill-portion centre axis and the string-portion centre axis being relatively large, whereby the force against the borehole wall will be considerable.
- the abutment of the guiding support may be rotatable around a drive shaft for the drill bit. If the guiding support is arranged between the drill bit and the driving motor of the drill bit, the torque of the drill bit is transmitted by means of the drive shaft which is supported in the guide support. It is not appropriate for the guiding pad or guiding wheel of the guiding support to be co-rotating with the drive shaft.
- the guiding support may include several guiding pads, or guiding wheels, spaced around the drill-portion centre axis.
- the guiding support is thereby adapted to receive guiding forces independently of what direction the drill bit is guided in.
- a guiding support in accordance with the invention solves problems with unreliable guiding of the drill bit in relatively weak rock, which considerably improves the drilling progress in such rock.

- the drill portion 4 has a drill-portion centre axis 26 and the string portion 6 has a string-portion centre axis 28.
- the string-portion centre axis 28 may be curved along the pipe string 24. Reference to the string-portion centre axis 28 refers to the direction it has at the guiding joint 8. In figure 1, the drill-portion centre axis 26 takes an angle ⁇ to the string-portion centre axis 28. The drill bit 10 is thereby directed somewhat upwards relative to the string- portion centre axis 28.
- the guiding support 16 is formed with a centric drive shaft 30 which, on its end portion facing the drill bit 10, is provided with a first mounting flange 32 which complementarily fits and is bolted to the drill bit 10, and the guiding support 16 is provided with, on its opposite end portion, a second mounting flange 34 which complementarily fits and is bolted to the gear 12, see figure 4.
- the mounting flanges 32, 34 are connected to the drive shaft 30 by means of bolt connections 36.
- a centric opening 38 extending through the drive shaft 30 and the mounting flanges 32, 34 enables the supply of drilling fluid to the drill bit 10.
- a wheel frame 40 surrounds the drive shaft 30.
- the wheel frame 40 is designed to hold a number of guiding wheels 42 spaced around the drill-portion centre axis 26.
- Each guiding wheel 42 is supported on a wheel axle 44, each wheel axle 44 being connected to a wheel bridge 46 on either side of the guiding wheel 42.
- the wheel bridges 46 and a spacer sleeve 48 span between two bearing housings 50.
- a bearing 52 surrounding the drive shaft 30 is placed in each of the bearing housings 50, and the wheel frame 40 is thereby arranged to rotate freely around the drive shaft 30.
- Each of the bearing housings 50 is formed with a seal 54 sealingly bearing against the first mounting flange 32 and the second mounting flange 34, respectively.
- the guiding wheels 42 have a relatively small clearance to the borehole wall 56 of the borehole 2.
- one or a pair of the guiding wheels 42 may bear lightly against the borehole wall 56.
- the drill portion 4 is rotated around the guiding support 16 so that the drill portion 4 takes a position as indicated by means of dashed lines in figure 2.
- the guide wheel (s) 42 which is (are) on the opposite side of the new direction of the drill-portion centre axis 26' receive a considerable radial force which is transmitted to the borehole wall 56.
- the directional change is made gradually during the progress and the loaded guiding wheels 42 roll on the borehole wall 56 while the torque from the gear 12 is transmitted to the drill bit 10 via the drive shaft 30 and the mounting flanges 32, 34.
