Definitions

  • the current invention relates to a skin treatment apparatus for applying a skin treatment liquid, according to the preamble of the first claim.
  • WO 01/78550 describes an applicator for use in depilation, the applicator comprising a volume for receiving depilation resin having an outlet for release of heated depilatory material contained in a reservoir, a dispenser mounted on the reservoir adjacent the outlet, the dispenser comprising a housing.
  • the housing comprises a roller.
  • the housing is cylindrical and has a longitudinal axis and is provided to rotate around it.
  • the roller further has an application surface with grooves running along it such that during rolling the application surface is covered with the resin and subsequently applies the resin to the skin surface.
  • the groove is interrupted.
  • a skin treatment apparatus comprising a roller with an interrupted groove allows for thin yet uniform layers of skin treatment liquid to be deposited onto the skin surface.
  • Such a pattern with an interrupted groove has the advantage to require less skin treatment liquid or in other words allow for thinner layers compared to the rollers with uninterrupted grooves. Without wanting to be bound by any theory, the inventor believes that this is due to the fact that compared to uninterrupted grooves with the same pattern, less liquid is filling the grooves, while at the same time allowing a more uniform application of skin treatment liquid on the skin.
  • a preferred embodiment according to the invention is characterized in that the interrupted groove runs helically along the application surface.
  • the presence of an helical groove allows a more even flow of skin treatment liquid on the roller.
  • a preferred embodiment according to the invention is characterized in that the groove is interrupted such that the application surface comprises a substantially periodical pattern of dimples.
  • Such pattern surprisingly performs a similar role as the pattern in the process of gravure printing.
  • the liquid is transferred via depressions or recesses on the surface, where lines, dots or flat recess cells are filled with liquid and the pattern allows for a uniform distribution of the liquid onto the surface.
  • a more preferred embodiment according to the invention is characterized in that the dimples have the shape of any one of rounds, hexagons, squares, or any other geometrical shape. These shapes make it easier to imprint the patterns when manufacturing the rollers.
  • a preferred embodiment according to the invention is characterized in that the roller is cylindrical, having a longitudinal axis and is provided to rotate around it.
  • a cylindrical roller is particularly advantageous when coating skin, extending in the longitudinal direction, such as the skin of the arms and the legs.
  • a preferred embodiment according to the invention is characterized in that the interrupted groove has a depth between 0.1 and 5 mm. This allows the manufacturer to choose the depth of the groove according to the skin treatment liquid that needs to be coated on the skin and the desired thickness of the layer.
  • a preferred embodiment according to the invention is characterized in that the roller is contained in a housing, comprising walls and at least one opening such that the roller fits into the at least one opening, and a gap is present between the roller and the walls.
  • the housing protects the roller and avoids spilling of the skin protection liquid and is more user-friendly.
  • the inventor found that a gap being present between the roller and a facing wall of the housing allows the skin treatment liquid to flow from the outlet over the roller to form an even more uniform layer on the skin surface. This gap can be very narrow, up to 0.1 mm., because the liquid is 'gripped' by the groove and needs no extra space to flow freely through the housing.
  • a preferred embodiment according to the invention is characterized in that the skin treatment liquid is a depilatory material.
  • the present invention offers a particularly advantageous way to apply depilatory material onto the skin in a thin yet uniform layer and achieve a complete removal of hair from the covered skin surface with a minimal amount of depilatory material.
  • a more preferred embodiment according to the invention is characterized in that the depilatory material is a resin and is liquefied by heating up to 50°C. Resins that are liquefied at temperatures up to 50°C are particularly suited for the use on the skin, since the use of higher temperature may cause burning of the skin.
  • a more preferred embodiment according to the invention is characterized in that the volume for receiving the depilatory material is a reservoir holding 50-150 ml, preferably 100 ml depilatory material. Volumes in this range are adapted to typical amounts of depilatory material used in hair removal applications and are compatible with existing volume reservoirs.
  • a preferred embodiment according to the invention is characterized in that the skin treatment liquid is any one of a shaving product, a sun protector, a sun tanning product, an after-shave product.
  • the roller can be used to apply emulsions or gels onto the skin, using the roller as a 'distributor' to apply a uniform, thin layer onto the skin. Specific reference is made to emulsions and gels for shaving products and sun protection or sun tanning products.
  • the shaving product is preferably a self-foaming type, which remains liquid in the reservoir, and forms a foam once applied on the skin.
  • the roller system eliminates the initial contact that hands would made with the liquid, which would start the foaming process prior to the product being dispersed on the face, legs or body.
  • the sun-tanning products can be directly rolled onto the skin in a very thin layer, so that further spreading becomes virtually unnecessary.
  • the roller gives a better controlled dosage of the liquid, and acts as a spreading tool. This is especially important for self-bronzing products, where the use of too much product will result in darker stains on the hands, and more sensitive areas of the skin.
  • Figures 1-10 show the different parts of a skin-treatment apparatus for applying a skin-treatment liquid, comprising a roller and a volume for receiving the skin-treatment liquid.
  • the roller 1 has an application surface 2 which is rotatably attached with respect to the volume 12 such that during rolling the application surface 2 is covered with the skin-treatment liquid and subsequently applies the skin-treatment liquid to a skin surface.
  • the cylindrical roller 1 is provided to rotate around its longitudinal axis.
  • the roller can be made of any material deemed appropriate by the person skilled in the art such as for example plastic.
  • the material of the roller 1 is adapted to the skin-treatment liquid which needs to be applied.
  • the roller 1 shown in figure 7 is cylindrical but can also be for example spherical according to the desired application of the roller 1.
  • the application surface 2 comprises at least one groove 10 running along the application surface 2.
  • the groove preferably has a depth of preferably 0.1 to 5 mm.
  • the groove 10 is interrupted.
  • the groove can for instance be interrupted such that the application surface 2 comprises a substantially periodical pattern of dimples 11.
  • the dimples 11 can have the shape of any one of rounds, hexagons, squares or any other geometrical shape. Such a pattern is for example shown in figure 7 in which the dimples have a square shape.
  • a volume 12 according to the invention is for example shown in figure 8 .
  • the volume 12 shown in figure 2 is particularly a bottle 12.
  • the bottle 12 has an outlet 13 for the release of skin treatment liquid, contained in the bottle 12.
  • the bottle 12 holds 50 to 150 ml, preferably 100 ml.
  • the bottle 12 has a neck 14 on which a removable cap (not shown in the figure) can be mounted, typically the cap is held on by a screw thread connection 15. For use, the cap is removed.
  • a housing 3 according to the invention comprising a roller 1 is shown in figures 5 .
  • the housing 3 preferably has a roof 4 and two elongate side walls 5.
  • the mouth 6 is open.
  • a hole 7 is present in the roof to engage the neck of a bottle.
  • Preferably the hole in the roof 4 is such that a bottle can be connected to it by means of a screw head connection.
  • the roller 1 is fitted between the end walls 8 and extends along the housing.
  • holes 9 are present in the end walls 8 to receive an axle by which the roller is mounted in position.
  • a gap is present between the roller 1 and a facing wall 5 of the housing to allow depilatory material to flow from the bottle over the roller to form a substantially even layer on the skin.
  • the skin treatment liquid according to the invention can for instance be a depilatory material, a shaving product, a sun protector, a sun tanning product or an after-shave product.
  • the depilatory material is preferably a resin that is liquefied by heating up to 50°C.
