Definitions
- the present invention is related to a method for bidirectional communication between a remote control and one or more motors linkable with a remote control.
- the one or more motors operate a rolled component, such as a roller shutter, based on commands received from the remote control.
- the invention further provides a system for signal pairing between a rolled component operated by a motor and a remote control for the motor.
- the invention further provides a remote control for use in a method according to the invention.
- the invention is important for the construction and transport sector.
- the invention is also suitable for domotica applications and security systems.
- a remote control can be used, for example, for controlling a tubular motor for controlling rolled components such as garage doors and roller shutters.
- the tubular motor with built-in receiver is coupled to the transmitter of the remote control by means of entering an identification number randomly chosen by the transmitter. This procedure can be only carried out in the physical presence of both motor and remote control.
- the memory of the motor needs to be erased such that the identification number is erased. Subsequently, a new identification number can be introduced in the memory of the motor, corresponding to an identification number of the new remote control and both motor and remote control can be coupled if they are physically present.
- the present invention aims to at least partially solve these problems and provides to this end a more flexible method.
- the invention aims to provide a method which no longer requires that - for coupling a motor with a remote control, that both are physically present.
- the object of this invention is the presentation of an improved method for pairing signals of a receiver to signals of a transmitter. More specifically, the invention concerns a method for signal pairing a motor for operating a rolled component such as a roll-down blind, roller shutter, roller gate, awning, sun blind or similar closing means to a remote control suitable for controlling the motor. In particular, the invention is concerned with bidirectional communication between a motor and a remote control for the motor.
- the invention provides a method for pairing a motor ( 2 ) with a remote control ( 10 ), wherein a first motor identification ( 6' ) is present in the motor and the remote control ( 10 ) is provided with a means for signal transmission ( 22 ) for operating a roll-down blind, roller shutter ( 20 ), roller gate, awning, sun blind or similar closing means connected with the motor ( 2 ), comprising the following steps:
- a method according to the invention has the advantage that the physical presence of the motor is not required when programming the transmitter in the remote control.
- the method can be done remotely. A technician does not need to travel to the location where the motor is located. Moreover, the method can be carried out over a certain time period.
- a method according to the invention is less sensitive to problems occurring when a remote control is lost. With the method according to the invention time and work can be saved for the benefit of both end-user and technician/repairer.
- the information is transmitted by the remote control to the motor, replied by information from the motor to the receiver.
- This bidirectional communication between remote control and motor provides additional comfort to the user of the remote control.
- the invention concerns a signal pairing method for a motor, preferably a roller motor, more preferably a roller motor for a roller shutter, and a remote control.
- to pair or " pairing” is meant an activity which creates a pair, in particular an equipment pair.
- the activity comprises the transmission of an identification code of a first motor to a selected motor, whereupon the motor identification present in the memory of the selected motor is compared with the motor identification received.
- a couple is formed ; in other words, the motor was paired with the remote control. Subsequently, the motor will accept instructions from the remote control and carry them out.
- to carry out is meant that the motor will control the closing means connected to the axis of rotation of the motor.
- a closing means can be moved upwards or downwards.
- with a pair is meant a remote control and a motor.
- a paired motor will recognize signals originating from a remote control with which it is paired, and carry them out.
- connection can be considered as a synonym.
- the present invention concerns a method for pairing a motor ( 2 ) with a remote control ( 10 ), wherein a first motor identification ( 6 ') is present in the motor and the remote control ( 10 ) is provided with a means for signal transmission ( 22 ) for operating a roll-down blind, roller shutter ( 20 ), roller gate, awning, sun blind or similar closing means connected with the motor ( 2 ), comprising the following steps:
- This method uses a computer program for pairing a motor with a remote control of a motor. Using the computer program the identification code of the motor is paired with the identification code of the remote control. This method has the advantage that the individual steps of the method can be carried on a different location and/or over a certain time period.
- the advantage of this method is that it can be indicated on the remote control whether or not an instruction passed from the remote control to the motor, was accepted. This is useful for controlling a motor which is not visible for a user. If a motor of a roller shutter is not visible for a user, the user cannot visually check if the transmitted instructions have been received by the motor and have been carried out. For example, a user cannot see if a moving part such as a roller shutter operated by the motor to which instructions have been transmitted, moves. If - according to the method of the invention - on the remote control is indicated whether an instruction, transmitted from the remote control to the motor, was accepted or ignored, the user has an alternative control means.
- the method concerns the step of displaying the acceptance signal and the refusal signal using a light signal on the remote control.
- the display may consist of a green light that is activated on the remote control in case of receipt of an acceptance signal by the remote control, whereas in case of receipt of a refusal signal by the remote control, a red light is activated on the remote control.
- the display may consist of a flashing light signal.
- the acceptance signal and/or the refusal signal are shown using an image on a display of the remote control.
- This image can consist of a text message and/or a symbol display.
- a possible symbol display could be an image of a roller shutter, wherein, in case of an acceptance signal, a moving roller shutter is depicted on the display and in case of a refusal signal a crossed-out roller shutter is depicted.
- the method further includes also the following steps: when there is a match between the motor identification present in the motor and the motor identification transmitted from the remote control to the motor, successively moving the motor back and forth.
- the axis of rotation of the roller motor to which the closing means is connected will successively rotate forwards and backwards or first backwards and subsequently forwards.
- This method to indicate the acceptance of a signal has as an advantage that the receipt and acceptance of an instruction by a user can be observed using a sound signal, namely the sound the motor generates when moving the axis of rotation forwards and backwards. Since a roller shutter is attached to the axis of rotation, also a visual signal may be observed. To this end, it suffices that the displacement of the roller shutter, caused by the forwards and backwards movement of the axis of rotation of the motor, is carried out sufficiently large to be observed. To this end, a motor can be programmed according to existing technology.
- the method concerns pairing a motor with a roller shutter.
- roller shutter is meant a shutter that can be moved upwards or downwards by the movement of the motor, by the connection with the axis of rotation of a motor.
- the roller shutter may serve to entirely or partially close a window opening. The application of the invention provides more ease of use for a user of the roller shutter.
- the method concerns pairing a motor with a roller gate, for example a garage door.
- the method of the invention can also be preceded by a procedural part wherein a unique identification number is assigned to a motor.
- This procedural part contains method steps to assign an identification number to a motor, preferably to a motor memory.
- the identification number in the motor preferably in the motor memory, can subsequently be used for comparison with the identification transmitted by a remote control wishing to control the motor. When there is a match, controlling the motor can be allowed. When there is no match, commands of the remote control may be ignored by the motor.
- the motor identification present in the motor is obtained using the following steps preceding step a) from the above described method :
- the motor identification is placed on the outside of the motor as a label. This has the advantage that the identification assigned to the motor is clearly visible and can be read without opening the motor.
- the motor identification placed on the motor is a human- and/or computer-readable identification. This has the advantage that a user may read and pass on the identification, for example by telephone, to the computer program.
- Assigning an identification to a motor may be done as follows. A unique number is created ranging between 000,000,000,001 and 4,294,967,296 (256 x 256 x 256 x 256). The number is placed on a label. The label is attached to the tube of the motor.
- the motor identification comprises a bar code.
- reading the motor identification can be automated, for example by reading the bar code with a bar code reader. This reduces the risk for errors. It allows a skilled person to simply read data into its data base. These can be coupled with customer data and maintenance data. This allows an increased service. The number of required operations for data transfer can be reduced.
- the unique identification number is written to motor memory by means of a computer program. To this end, the unique number is introduced into the computer program.
- An apparatus is connected to a computer with the computer program, preferably by means of a USB-connection. The unique number is passed on from the computer program on the computer to the apparatus, preferably a remote control.
- the apparatus is provided with a transmitter. Using the transmitter the unique number is transmitted to the memory of the motor.

- the signal is forwarded to the memory (not shown) of the motor 2.
- the identification number present of the motor 6' is compared with the identification number of the motor 6 transmitted with the signal originating from the remote control. When there is a match, the motor 2 will react to command signals originating from the remote control 10 .
- Motor 2 and remote control 10 have now been paired.
- the response of the motor 2 will be such that the motor will briefly rotate back and forth, such that it is apparent for the user of the remote control that a command originating from the remote control was received by the motor 2.
- the motor 2 and the remote control 10 are suited for bidirectional communication between the motor and the remote control 10 coupled thereto.
- This method is shown in Figure 4 .
- the remote control 10 is further provided with a receiver (not shown).
- the motor is further provided with a transmitter 18 for communication with the remote control. After receipt of a signal of the remote control 10 to which the motor 2 is paired, this transmitter 18 transmits a signal to the remote control 10 .
- the transmitter 18 is suited to transmit an acceptance signal 36 or refusal signal 37 to the remote control 10.
- An acceptance signal 36 is transmitted from the transmitter 18 of the motor 2 to the remote control 10 when there is a match between the identification number of the motor 6 and the signal comprising an identification number of a motor originating from the remote control 10.
- a refusal signal 37 is transmitted from the transmitter 18 of the motor 2 to the remote control 10 when the identification number stored in the memory of the motor 6, does not correspond to the identification number of a motor transmitted with the signal received from the remote control 10.
- the response of the motor hence the nature of the transmitted signal to the remote control, becomes visible on the remote control for those who wishes to remotely operate the motor. This increases the ease of use and comfort. It allows that a motor can be operated without the user of the remote control having visual contact with the motor and/or the closing means connected therewith
- the acceptance signal 36 and refusal signal 37 can be displayed using a light signal on the remote control.
- An indicator lamp 8 on the remote control 10 may activate for example green or red at receipt of respectively an acceptance signal 36 and refusal signal 37 of the motor by the remote control 10.
- Movement commands originating from the remote control 10 can control the roller motor 2 of the roller shutter 20.
- the movement commands can control an upward movement, a downward movement or a stop of the roller shutter, connected to the axis of rotation of the roller motor 2.
- a roller shutter 20 can be opened, closed or put into the desired position.
- roller shutter motor 2 If there is no match between the identification number of the roller shutter motor 6' and the identification number transmitted by the remote control 6 , the roller shutter motor 2 will ignore commands of the remote control 10. No pairing was achieved.
- the above procedure is suitable both for coupling a roller shutter 20 still to be installed and for coupling a roller shutter already mounted on a window, to a remote control 10.
- the procedure can be carried out in a workshop where a roller shutter 20 with associated remote control 10 is prepared for transport to a customer.
- the procedure may also be carried out after installation of a roller shutter 20, for example in a newly built house.
- the procedure described in 1.1 may be repeated for one or more additional remote controls.
- the procedure may run as follows.
- a customer requests a second remote control with a supplier. He receives a kit comprising a new remote control and a program. He installs the supplied program on its PC. He couples his remote control to his PC using a USB-cable or directly by means of a connection between a USB-port on the PC and a USB-output on his remote control. He copies the motor identification number of his roller shutter from a guarantee card of his roller shutter or he reads the motor identification number from his roller shutter from a label on the roller motor. He couples the motor identification number of his roller shutter in the program to further information of the motor, such as construction year and specifications. The information is transferred from the program to the memory of the computer. The motor identification code is transmitted to the remote control coupled to his PC.
- the motor identification code is stored in the memory of the remote control. From the memory of the remote control, the information is transferred to a transmitter in the remote control. By operating the learning button, the remote control transmits the identification code of the motor to the roller shutter. The code is received by the motor. In the memory of the motor the identification code is compared to the code, present in the memory of the motor. When there is a match, the motor reacts to commands originating from the remote control.
- the motor does not need to be physically present for attributing a motor identification code to a remote control.
- the remote control does not need to be physically present when the motor identification code is introduced into the computer program.
- a person being the owner of the remote control and/or a technician/repairer, does not need to travel to establish a connection between motor and remote control.
- a new programming for example adding an extra remote control, creating a new remote control when a previous remote control was lost, transferring a programming to a remote control with more features such as a remote control with dimmer, can be carried out remotely.
- the remote control to be erased 10 is connected to a computer 3 by means of a USB-cable 24 or directly.
- a program 15, installed on the computer 3, is run.
- the program 15 the unique identification number of the motor 6 in the connected remote control 10 is erased.
- the motor identification number 6 is removed from the memory 25 of the remote control 10. Consequently, the remote control 10 is disconnected from the motor 2.
- a user code can be assigned to one or more users of the remote control.
- a numeric keyboard provided on the remote control, a user code can be entered.
- the user is granted access to the control of the remote control.
- a computer program for pairing a motor with one or more remote controls may further be provided with timer information.
- Timer information may include, for example, the desired time when one or more roller shutters operated by the remote control needs to be pulled up and/or let down.
- the timer information may comprise daily, weekly, or monthly instructions for the roller shutters.
- the timer information can be different for each motor when the remote control operates several motors.
- the computer program can be suited to transmit other data for a motor of a roller shutter in the bedroom than for a motor of a roller shutter in the living room.
- the motor 2 is connected to the electricity network by inserting the plug of the power supply of the motor 2 in a wall socket. Subsequently, the learning button at the motor end is pressed once. The motor 2 will move briefly to the left and to the right. Next, the learning button 17 of the remote control 10 is pressed once. The motor 2 will move briefly to the left and to the right. This way, the transmitter 23 of the remote control 10 can communicate with the receiver of the motor (not shown). An identification code of the remote control is transmitted to the receiver of the motor. The code is stored in the motor, for example in the memory of the motor. Remote control and motor have now been paired.
- Motors that can be paired in this way are commercially available. With motors known by the skilled person, a code randomly chosen by the transmitter is written into the memory of the motor to have a remote control and a motor communicate with each other.
- a remote control 10 To disconnect a remote control 10 from a motor 2, one may proceed as follows.
- the learning button 17 of a remote control 10 is pressed six times.
- the command button for upward movement (Up-button) 11 of the remote control 10 is pressed once.
- the whole memory of the motor 2 is erased. Consequently, all remote controls are erased from the motor memory.
- Example 4 Attributing a motor identification to a motor
- FIG. 2 Method steps for attributing a motor identification to a motor 2, according to a preferred embodiment of the invention, is illustrated in Figure 2 .
- a unique identification number is produced for a motor. This number is shown on a label 1 . It comprises numerical values 6 and a bar code 5.
- the label is put on the outside of a tubular motor 2.
- the number is read from the label and transferred to a computer.
- the number is entered into a computer program 15 installed on the computer 3.
- the unique code of the motor 2 is entered into the computer program 15 by means of a display device which allows entering data in the program.
- additional input fields can be provided in the computer program 15. For example, this may allow to incorporate further data 9 in the computer program 15 .
- These further data are, for example, information about the motor, such as construction year and specifications. This can also be, for example, an identification of the customer.
- a transmitter 4 with USB-connection is coupled to the computer 3.
- the unique motor identification code 6 is transferred to the apparatus 4 .
- the apparatus is provided with a transmitter 22. By means of the transmitter the code 6 is remotely transmitted to the motor.
- the signal of the transmitter is received by a receiver coupled to the motor.
- the signal with the code is transmitted to a memory of the motor. In the memory, the motor identification code 6 is stored.
- a remote control 10 can be designed to be attached to a panel or wall ( Figures 5 a-d ).
- a remote control can also be designed to fit into the hand of a user ( Figure 5e).
- a remote control can be provided with a numeric keyboard 26 as shown, for example, in Figure 5a, a lock 27 as shown in Figure 5b, a display device for displaying timer data 28 as shown in Figure 5c, an on/off button 30 as shown in Figure 5d, a control light 8 as shown in Figure 5c, and/or operating buttons for displaying the timer data 29 as shown in Figure 5d.
