Description

System and Method for registering a transaction by credit card
The present invention relates to a method for registering a transaction by credit card performed by means of a credit card reader terminal.
The invention also relates to a system and a computer program for registering a transaction by credit card suitable for carrying out such a method.
Background art
Nowadays, there is a trend towards using credit card payments as much as possible, relying less on cash payments, and therefore, more and more products and services are paid through credit card transactions both online and in shops or alike. Also, the amounts may not be only small amounts, but big important payments may also be done using credit cards. Therefore, tax charges become important when those payments are performed, and unifying information of all the credit card payments done to different merchants may be uncomfortable, since it involves gathering and organizing manually a plurality of tickets, plus finding different financial information from different merchants, which is necessary when writing down a tax declaration.
Furthermore, the information found in said tickets may not always be appropriate or enough to get a tax reduction in some places, which may entail an economical disadvantage for the cardholder.
Summary of the invention
It is an object of the present invention to provide a method for registering a transaction by credit card, which facilitates the tax recount and the gathering of all the information related to a future tax declaration, in an organized and simple way.
This is achieved by providing, according to a first aspect of the invention, a method for registering a transaction by credit card, wherein a payment is performed by means of a credit card reader terminal, the method comprising: a) Obtaining an identification of the credit card reader terminal; b) Verifying if the terminal is comprised in a plurality of registered terminals; c) Obtaining an identification of the user of the credit card; d) Verifying if the user is comprised in a plurality of registered users; e) If the terminal is registered and the user is registered, generating an invoice based on the identification of the user, the identification of the credit card reader terminal and information related to the transaction.
In this way, by using this method, a registration such as an invoice is generated, and there is no need to print any paper ticket and gather financial information from the seller and/or the buyer to generate an invoice manually, thus registering the transaction in a manner which can be used "as is" in the generation of a tax declaration of the cardholder. Also, the identification of the user, plus the identification of the reader terminal and information related to the transaction are found in the invoice, and therefore it is possible to use it in a tax declaration which may led to a tax deduction for the cardholder, presenting the invoice in the suitable places.
The credit card terminal may be located, for example, in a merchant's shop wherein the user is paying goods or services, and the generation of the invoice may be performed externally by a third party other than the merchant and the user, with no need of modification of the existent credit card payment systems established by banks or credit unions.
According to a preferred embodiment, the identification of the credit card reader terminal is obtained from a credit card issuer server.
According to a preferred embodiment, the identification of the user of the credit card is obtained from a credit card issuer server.
The credit card issuer server may be a computer server from a local bank or credit union which has issued the credit card, and which, for example, receives information from the credit card reader terminal for the normal verification of the validity of the card performed during a transaction using a credit card.
According to a preferred embodiment, the method further comprises a step (T) of obtaining information related to the transaction, before step (e).
This information may be the amount of the payment and other information related to the description of the paid item or service, which may also be transmitted by the credit card issuer server. According to a preferred embodiment, the method further comprises a step (g) of sending the invoice to the user through a telecommunication network.
For example, the invoice may be sent electronically by using an email address of the user, or it may be uploaded separately in a computer server accessible by the user through the Internet, an extranet or an intranet. A plurality of invoices may be regrouped in a single document (for example, regrouping all the invoices from the same merchant generated during a certain period of time) rather than uploading or sending them separately, and be sent or uploaded periodically to simplify the subsequent tax declaration and lessen the number of documents to be used.
According to a preferred embodiment, the method further comprises a step (h) of obtaining account information regarding the registered terminal, and wherein step (e) of generating an invoice is further based on the account information regarding the registered terminal.
The account information may be a plurality of possible items sold by the merchant and its corresponding financial information such as the tax charge related to each item. It would be preferable that at least one default item or service and its related tax charge may be obtained. Furthermore, other necessary information such as the merchant's company name, the merchant's VAT number and its address may also be obtained, which would be useful in the generation of the invoice.
According to a preferred embodiment, the verification of the terminal of step (b) is performed by querying a database of registered terminals.
According to a preferred embodiment, the verification of the user of step (d) is performed by querying a database of registered users.
The terminals and users may be registered to ensure that both the merchant and the user or cardholder allows the invoice to be generated and other services based on its credit card transactions may be performed, such as historic record of the payments and a unification of all the different payments in a unique document comprising a plurality of invoices, which may be more easy to use when doing a tax declaration.
According to a second aspect of the invention, it is provided a credit card management system for registering a transaction by credit card, wherein a payment is performed by means of a credit card reader terminal, the system comprising means for obtaining an identification of the credit card reader terminal; means for verifying if the terminal is comprised in a plurality of registered terminals; means for obtaining an identification of the user of the credit card; means for verifying if the user is comprised in a plurality of registered users; and means for generating an invoice based on the identification of the user, the identification of the credit card reader terminal and information related to the transaction.
Said system ensures that only registered merchants (identified by their credit card reader terminals) and registered users enable to generate invoices from their credit card payments.
According to a preferred embodiment, the credit card management system further comprises means for obtaining information related to the transaction.
According to a preferred embodiment, the plurality of registered terminals is comprised in a database of registered terminals.
According to a preferred embodiment, the plurality of registered users is comprised in a database of registered credit card users.
According to another aspect, the invention provides a computer program product comprising program instructions for causing a computer to perform the method for registering a transaction by credit card. Said computer program may be embodied on storing means (for example, on a record medium, on a computer memory or on a read-only memory) or carried on a carrier signal (for example, on an electrical or optical carrier signal).
It has to be understood that in all the above described systems, all of the described means may be embodied either in a computer program module or in a computer system corresponding to each means, or any combination of both. Also, several means may be comprised in the same module of a computer program or the same computer system.
Brief description of the drawings An embodiment of the present invention will be described in the following, only by way of non-limiting example, with reference to the appended drawing, in which:
Figure 1 illustrates a credit card management system according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention.
Preferred embodiment of the invention
As illustrated in Figure 1 , the credit card management system comprises a control server 1 connected through a communication network, such as, for example, the Internet, to a bank computing system 2. Furthermore, the management system is also connected to a database of registered terminals 11 , a database of registered credit card users 12 and a database of transaction information related to the registered terminals 13.
Also, the bank computing system 2 has a communication established with a credit card reader terminal 14, such as an Internet communication, the terminal being located in a shop, and said communication being used whenever a user or cardholder 15 performs a purchase with a credit card in the shop using said terminal 14. The credit card may be a normal credit card with no need of modification of the existent credit card payment system established by banks or credit unions, and the terminal 14 may be a normal terminal or an additional specific terminal.
More precisely, the database of registered terminals 11 comprises a list of terminals associated with merchants which are registered in the management system, and therefore, allow the management system to send invoices of the payments whose credit card transactions are performed. The database of registered credit card users
12 comprises a list of clients which are registered in the management system, and therefore, who allow to be sent invoices of their payments done through credit card transactions using registered terminals. The database of transaction information related to the registered terminals 13 comprises a list of products or services associated with each registered terminal, and associated with the type of tax charged to the specific product or service, description of the product or service, contact of the merchant who receives the payment (name, physical address, email, telephone number, et c.) and VAT number of the merchant.
There might be cases where some information such as the description of the product and the type of tax charged to it might be sent by the terminal and subsequently sent by the bank computing system to the control server, thus being redundant information. But nevertheless, if any terminal does not send any information other than the amount of the product/service paid through the credit card transaction, at least one product/service and it's corresponding tax charge should be found in the database 13 set as a default information for creating an invoice.
According to the present invention, the preferred embodiment comprises also a method for performing a transaction by credit card, wherein a payment is performed between the credit card reader terminal 14 and the bank computing system 2, the method comprising the steps of:
a) Obtaining an identification of the credit card reader terminal; b) Verifying, by querying the database of registered terminals, if the terminal is registered in the management system; c) Obtaining an identification of the user of the credit card; d) Verifying, by querying the database of registered credit card users, if the credit card user is registered in the management system. e) Obtaining information related to the transaction; f) If the terminal is registered and the credit card user is registered, generating an invoice based on the identification of the credit card user, the identification of the credit card reader terminal, the account information regarding the registered terminal, and information related to the transaction; g) Sending the invoice to an email address of the credit card user.
The obtaining of both the identification of the credit card reader terminal and the user of the credit card are performed by receiving transmissions done by the bank computing system to the management system. This information is previously obtained by the bank computing system by receiving it from the credit card terminal reader when the credit card is read.
More precisely, the information related to the transaction comprises the amount of the payment and the description of each paid product or service, which may be obtained by receiving the information from the bank computing system. Other obtained information related to the transaction includes the corresponding tax charge related to each paid product or service, which is obtained by querying the database of registered credit card terminals. Furthermore, the generation of the invoice is performed by obtaining account information regarding the registered terminal and obtaining account information regarding the registered user of the credit card. The obtaining of the account information regarding the registered terminal is performed by querying the database of registered terminals, which comprises the financial information of the merchant, such as Company name, VAT number, physical address, merchant's contact name and telephone number, information of the credit card reader terminal such as an identifying terminal code and the physical address where the terminal is located; and the obtaining of account information regarding the registered user is performed by querying the database of registered users, which comprises the financial information of the user of the credit card, such as VAT or Identity document number, credit card number, name or company name, physical address, contact's name and telephone number.
For registering a user within the system, the necessary financial information found in the database of the registered users should be provided, which may also comprise the credit card number or numbers which the user is the cardholder of. This provision may be performed, for example, through a webpage of the management system. A similar provision may be performed with any merchant willing to be registered in the system.
Although the present invention has been described in detail for purpose of illustration, it is understood that such detail is solely for that purpose, and variations can be made therein by those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention.
Thus, while the preferred embodiments of the methods and of the systems have been described in reference to the environment in which they were developed, they are merely illustrative of the principles of the invention. Other embodiments and configurations may be devised without departing from the scope of the appended claims.
Further, although the embodiments of the invention described with reference to the drawings comprise computer apparatus and processes performed in computer apparatus, the invention also extends to computer programs, particularly computer programs on or in a carrier, adapted for putting the invention into practice. The program may be in the form of source code, object code, a code intermediate source and object code such as in partially compiled form, or in any other form suitable for use in the implementation of the processes according to the invention. The carrier may be any entity or device capable of carrying the program.
For example, the carrier may comprise a storage medium, such as a ROM, for example a CD ROM or a semiconductor ROM, or a magnetic recording medium, for example a floppy disc or hard disk. Further, the carrier may be a transmissible carrier such as an electrical or optical signal, which may be conveyed via electrical or optical cable or by radio or other means.
When the program is embodied in a signal that may be conveyed directly by a cable or other device or means, the carrier may be constituted by such cable or other device or means.
Alternatively, the carrier may be an integrated circuit in which the program is embedded, the integrated circuit being adapted for performing, or for use in the performance of, the relevant processes.
