According to embodiments of the invention, a method for checking the authenticity of a document is created, a first image of the document being recorded with first image recording parameters. The first image recording parameters can be standardized image recording parameters which are used regardless of the type of document.

Information is then automatically recognized in the first image. This is done using a process of optical character recognition (OCR). The information can be a direct or indirect indication of the document type of the document from which the first image was captured. For example, the information includes an indication of the state that issued the document and the date of issue. If the documents to be checked are passports, the type of document is derived from this information, since the characteristics of the passport documents issued by it are specified for each state. The information can be specified in plain text in the partial area captured by the first image or in a coded form.

With the help of the information recognized from the first image, a database query is carried out in order to determine second image acquisition parameters for acquiring a second image of the document. For this purpose, type-specific second image recording parameters are stored in a database. The second image recording parameters assigned to a specific document type can therefore be called up from the database. For this purpose, the information recognized from the first image can be used as an access key.

A second image of the document is then recorded with the second image recording parameters. This is preferably a full image of the document, which can contain the entire front and / or back of the document.

According to one embodiment of the invention, the first image is recorded with predefined settings for the parameters of the image recording and the image processing. This can be parameters stored in the factory in a non-volatile memory of the device used to check the authenticity of the document. For document type recognition of the document, the first image can contain the so-called MRZ (machine readable zone, e.g. as specified by the ICAO). In the MRZ, for example, the document format or the type and / or country of manufacture is specified in machine-readable form.

The evaluation of this information recorded from the MRZ by OCR takes place via a corresponding query in a database, the document-specific parameters for the further image recordings, in particular the recording of the second image, and which provides the possible check features of the document and other individualized information. The further test routine of the device then runs with the specific parameters read from the database, which deviate from the factory settings.

According to one embodiment of the invention, at least one of the security features of the document to be checked is fluorescent. In this embodiment it is particularly advantageous that the first image can be recorded without noticeably stimulating the fluorescence of the security feature. Second image recording parameters are then used for recording the second image, so that the fluorescence of the security feature is excited in such a way that the security feature can be checked easily or optimally in the second image.

Due to the type-specific second image recording parameters, it can be avoided in particular that the fluorescence is not excited enough, which would mean a low signal-to-noise ratio, or that the fluorescence is excited too much, so that the optical sensor saturates.

According to one embodiment of the invention, the second image recording parameters contain one or more parameters with regard to the illumination of the document, in particular with regard to the intensity of the illumination and / or with regard to the exposure of an optical sensor with the aid of which the second image is recorded, in particular the exposure time and / or a gain factor. Alternatively or additionally, the radiation frequency of the illumination can be specified in the second image recording parameter.

According to a further embodiment, the database contains not only the type-specific second image acquisition parameters but also type-specific information on the security features, the type-specific information on the security features can also be queried during the database query in order to use them for the check based on the second image. The information on the security features can contain, for example, information on the location and form of the security features. These target characteristics are then combined with the The actual features present in the second image are compared, with the authenticity of the document being assumed if the actual features match the target features sufficiently.

According to one embodiment of the invention, the document is a value or security document, such as an ID document, e.g. H. an identification document, such as an identity card, passport, driver's license or company ID, or a means of payment, such as a banknote, a credit card, or other proof of authorization, such as an entrance ticket, a bill of lading, a visa or the like.

In a further aspect, the invention relates to a computer program product with program instructions that can be executed by a test device for carrying out a method according to the invention.

In a further aspect, the invention relates to an electronic device for checking the authenticity of a document.

According to one embodiment of the invention, such an electronic device includes means for capturing a first image of at least a partial area of the document with first image capturing parameters and for capturing a second image of the document with second image capturing parameters, means for recognizing information in the first image, and means for performing it a database query with the aid of the information for querying the second image recording parameters.

The first image acquisition parameters are the same for all supported document types. The first image recording parameters can therefore be stored in a memory of the electronic device. The first image recording parameters can also be part of the firmware of the electronic device.

According to embodiments of the invention, the electronic device has one or more optical sensors for sensing different optical spectral ranges, as well as one or more radiation sources for illuminating the document in different spectral ranges.

According to one embodiment of the invention, the electronic device also has a radio interface, in particular a so-called RFID interface, for wireless communication via electromagnetic waves with an electronic circuit integrated in the document, in particular a so-called RFID chip. Digitized data of a facial image printed or displayed on the document can be stored in the RFID chip and / or further data, such as biometric data, information about the person carrying the document and / or the issuing authority of the document.

At least some of the data stored in the chip can be cryptographically protected against unauthorized access, so that only test devices authorized for this purpose can call up the data stored in the chip via their radio interface. For example, data that are captured from the second image can be compared with data that are read out from the chip by the testing device. If the data captured from the second image sufficiently match the data read from the chip, the authenticity of the document is assumed.

In a further aspect, the invention relates to a data processing system for checking the authenticity of documents.

According to embodiments of the invention, the data processing system contains a plurality of test devices according to the invention, which can communicate with the database via communication connections, such as for example via a network, in order to query the second image recording parameters from there.

Embodiments of the invention are particularly advantageous since different types of documents can be checked reliably and efficiently with the aid of the same method or the same checking device. For example, the document types can differ greatly in terms of their reflection behavior. This is especially true for paper-based documents compared to documents with a plastic surface and laminated documents. The different reflection behavior can lead to different contrast and response behavior with the same lighting a fluorescent security feature. The invention provides a remedy here, since the lighting is selected as a function of the type of document.

This is particularly advantageous for checking fluorescent security features. The response behavior of such a fluorescent security feature can vary greatly from document type to document type, depending on the color or ink used. Given the same image recording parameters, fluorescent security features can be recorded in a strongly overdriven manner in one type of document, whereas in another type of document there is hardly any excitation of fluorescence, so that the security feature is hardly visible. The invention also provides a remedy here, since the second image recording parameters are selected specifically for the type of document. This enables optimal image quality to be achieved for all supported document types.

Elements of the following figures that correspond to one another are identified by the same reference symbols.

The Figure 1 shows schematically a document 100, which can be an identification document such as a passport. The document 100 bears a face image 102. The face image 102 can be printed on the document 100 be. Alternatively or additionally, the document 100 has an integrated display device on which the facial image 102 is reproduced.

In addition to the face image 102, the document 100 can contain further security features, in particular optical security features.

Zu den optischen Sicherheitsmerkmalen zählen beispielsweise:

  • Guillochen: Guillochen werden mit Hilfe von so genanntem Liniendruck auf das Dokument aufgedruckt. Sie bestehen im Allgemeinen aus in verschiedenen Farben übereinander gedruckten Wellen- und Schleifenmustern;
  • Mikro-Schrift: Hierbei handelt es sich um aufgedruckte Schriftzüge in kleinster Schrift. Mit bloßem Auge lässt sich die Mikro-Schrift kaum erkennen. Beispielsweise ist Mikro-Schrift auf den Euro-Banknoten als Bildelemente in die Motive eingearbeitet. Mit Hilfe einer Lupe kann die Mikro-Schrift gelesen werden;
  • Metamere Systeme: Aufgrund metamerer Farbgleichheit können unterschiedliche spektrale Zusammensetzungen des Lichts bei Menschen den gleichen Farbeindruck hervorrufen;
  • Aufdrucke mit Fluoreszenz, Phosphoreszenz und/oder Up-Conversion-Farben;
  • Aufdrucke mit Infrarot-Farbe: Die Farbe wird nur unter Infrarot-Strahlung für Lesegeräte mit entsprechenden Sensoren sichtbar. Beispielsweise sind Euro-Banknoten mit diesem optischen Sicherheitsmerkmal ausgestattet;
  • Barcodes, insbesondere ein- oder zweidimensionale Barcodes;
  • Optisch variable Farben (OVI - Optical Variable Ink): Bei einer optisch variablen Farbe ändert sich der Farbeindruck je nach Betrachtungswinkel, da das Licht an den Pigmenten gebrochen, gestreut oder reflektiert wird;
  • Hologramme und Kinegramme (transparent oder reflektierend);
  • Wasserzeichen, insbesondere digitale Wasserzeichen, die eine maschinell auslesbare Information tragen;
  • Passerdruck: Verschiedene Muster oder Symbole werden so über- oder aneinander gedruckt, dass sie zusammen ein bestimmtes Bild ergeben. Kleinste Abweichungen im Stand, d.h. so genannte Passerunggenauigkeiten, können leicht mit bloßem Auge erkannt werden. Wenn sich die Teilbilder auf verschiedenen Seiten des Dokuments, wie zum Beispiel einer Banknote, befinden, bezeichnet man dieses optische Sicherheitsmerkmal als Durchsichtspasser;
  • Durchsichtsfenster: Ein Fenster aus einer transparenten Kunststofffolie ist in dem Dokument eingearbeitet;
  • Melierfasern: Dem Papier des Dokuments werden Fasern beigemischt, die unter UV-Licht in verschiedenen Farben leuchten;
  • Sicherheitsfaden;
  • Mikroperforation.
The optical security features include, for example:
  • Guilloches: Guilloches are printed on the document with the help of so-called line printing. They generally consist of wave and loop patterns printed one on top of the other in different colors;
  • Micro-font: These are printed lettering in the smallest of fonts. The micro-writing can hardly be seen with the naked eye. For example, micro-writing on the euro banknotes is incorporated into the motifs as picture elements. The micro-writing can be read with the aid of a magnifying glass;
  • Metameric systems: Due to metameric color equality, different spectral compositions of light can produce the same color impression in people;
  • Prints with fluorescence, phosphorescence and / or up-conversion inks;
  • Imprints with infrared color: The color is only visible under infrared radiation for reading devices with appropriate sensors. For example, euro banknotes are equipped with this optical security feature;
  • Barcodes, in particular one- or two-dimensional barcodes;
  • Optically variable colors (OVI - Optical Variable Ink): With an optically variable color, the color impression changes depending on the viewing angle, since the light is refracted, scattered or reflected by the pigments;
  • Holograms and kinegrams (transparent or reflective);
  • Watermarks, in particular digital watermarks that carry information that can be read out by machine;
  • Register print: Different patterns or symbols are printed on top of or on top of each other so that together they result in a specific image. The smallest deviations in the state, ie so-called register accuracy, can easily be recognized with the naked eye. If the partial images are on different pages of the document, such as a bank note, this optical security feature is referred to as a see-through register;
  • See-through window: a window made of a transparent plastic film is incorporated into the document;
  • Mottled fibers: Fibers are added to the paper of the document, which glow in different colors under UV light;
  • Security thread;
  • Microperforation.

For example, the document contains a security thread 104 and an imprint 106 with a fluorescent color, which is only visible under ultraviolet (UV) illumination. The document 100 can further, in the Figure 1 have optical security features not shown.

The document 100 also has a portion 108 that carries machine-readable information. The sub-area 108 can be, for example, the so-called Machine Readable Zone (MRZ), as specified by the ICAO. Especially For example, the position and size of the sub-area 108 as well as other parameters of the sub-area 108, such as the font size and the font used, can be defined globally uniformly for all supported document types.

The document 100 can furthermore have an electronic chip 110 integrated into the document body. The chip 110 is preferably designed to set up a wireless communication link with a test device 112. The chip 110 can be a so-called RFID chip, for example.

The chip 110 has an electronic memory 114. The face image 102 can be stored in the electronic memory 114 in digitized form and / or further data relating to the owner of the document 100 and / or the office issuing the document. The data stored in the electronic memory 114 can be at least partially cryptographically protected in order to prevent unauthorized access to the data. The cryptographic protection of the data stored in the electronic memory 114 can take place, for example, by what is known as Basic Access Control and / or Extended Access Control, as also specified by the ICAO.

The checking device 112 has at least one optical sensor 116 for the optical detection of the document 100. The checking device 112 also has a radiation source 118 for illuminating the document 100 with radiation in the infrared (IR) range and a radiation source 120 for illuminating the document 100 in the ultraviolet (IR) range. UV) range. A single radiation source that covers a broad spectral range can also be used. From this - depending on the image recording parameters used - partial areas can be filtered out which are to be used for the respective recording.

A shutter 122, ie a so-called shutter, is arranged in front of the optical sensor 116, which during the exposure time releases an opening through which radiation reflected from the document 100 and / or radiation transmitted through the document can strike the optical sensor 116.

The optical sensor 116 can be, for example, a camera, such as a CCD sensor. The optical sensor 116, the radiation sources 118 and 120 and the shutter 122 are activated by a processor 124 of the testing device 112.

The processor 124 is used to execute the program instructions of a program 126. The program 126 contains program instructions 128 for recording a first image of the sub-area 108 on the basis of first image recording parameters. The first image acquisition parameters can be contained in the program instructions 128.

The program 126 further includes program instructions 130 for optical character recognition (OCR) in the first image, i. H. in the MRZ. The program 126 also contains program instructions 132 for performing a database query on the basis of information obtained from the MRZ by means of OCR, which directly or indirectly indicates the type of the document 100.

The program 126 also contains program instructions 134 for recording the second image of the document 100 on the basis of the type-specific second image recording parameters received from the database 136. The second image can be an overall image, i. H. a full picture of the document, act what is also known as full-page reading.

The program 126 also contains program instructions 138 for evaluating the second image in order to check one or more security features of the document. If the security features assigned to the document type of the document 100 in the database 136, for example, are present in the second image, the document 100 is considered to be genuine.

The program 126 may further include program instructions 140 to provide a user interface. The user interface 140 can be formed by an optical and / or acoustic signal output. For example, a first signal is output when the document is recognized as genuine and a second signal if the document has not passed the authentication.

The user interface can also be designed as a graphical user interface. In this case, a screen 142 is connected to the test device 112; for example, the screen 142 can be used to display the second image of the document in order to subject the second image to a visual inspection.

For example, the checking device 112 should be able to be used for checking passports from different countries. The supported document types are the passports of the different countries, each of which is specified differently.

For example, a first type of document is the passport of a country A. For this type of document, the recording of the second image with certain second image recording parameters is optimal. For the lighting, this is the parameter I (A), which specifies, for example, the current strength or voltage for controlling the radiation source 120, as well as the parameter T (A), which specifies the exposure time, i.e. the exposure time. H. indicates the opening time for the shutter 122. Alternatively or additionally, the lighting duration of the radiation source 120 can also be specified as the exposure parameter.

Furthermore, in the database 136 the first document type, i. H. the passport of country A, one or more security features can be assigned, which can be specified, for example, via their location in the document and their form. The same applies to a further type of document, i. H. the passport of country B, for which other, second image recording parameters are specified in the database 136, namely the parameter I (B) for the lighting and the parameter T (B) for the exposure time as well as a specification of the security features of the passport of the country B, for example with regard to their location and shape.

For example, each entry in the database 136 relates to a specific type of document, ie here the passport of a specific country.

Optionally, the test device 112 can have an interface 144 for communication with the chip 110. For example, the interface 144 can be a so-called RFID interface. The interface 144 can also be controlled by the processor 124.

The program instructions 128, 130, 132, 134, 138 and 140 can be implemented in whole or in part as so-called firmware. The program instructions can then be updated using a so-called firmware update. In particular, in this way the first image recording parameters for recording the first image can be updated if they are part of the program instructions, in particular part of the program instructions 128.

The procedure for checking document 100 is as follows:
The execution of the program instructions 128 is started, so that the radiation source 118 is activated in order to irradiate the document 100 with IR radiation. Furthermore, the shutter 122 is activated so that it opens during an opening time given by the first image recording parameters. The current strength or the voltage for controlling the radiation source 118 is also given by the first image recording parameters.

The first image of the sub-area 108 is therefore recorded with the first image recording parameters by the optical sensor 116.

After the first image has been recorded, the execution of the program instructions 130 is started in order to carry out the OCR. As a result of the OCR, information is recognized in the image, such as an indication of the country which issued the document 100. In the following, it is assumed, without loss of generality, that this is country A.

After the information has been recognized, the execution of the program instructions 132 is started. By executing the program instructions 132, a database query is generated which contains the information, ie the specification "Country A", as Includes access key. The database 136 then responds to the database query by outputting the database entries assigned to the document type for country A, ie the second image acquisition parameters I (A) and T (A) and the description of the security features assigned to this document type in the database 136.

After receiving the response from the database 136, the execution of the program instructions 134 is started in order to display the second image, i.e. the image. H. an overall image to be recorded of the document 100 with the aid of the second image recording parameters. For this purpose, the radiation source 120 is controlled in accordance with the parameter I (A) in order to ensure the optimum illumination in accordance with the specification of the second image recording parameters. Furthermore, the shutter 122 is activated in order to expose the optical sensor 116 during the exposure time T (A).

After the overall image of the document 100 has been recorded by the optical sensor 116, the execution of the program instructions 138 for evaluating the second image is started. By executing the program instructions 138, it is checked, for example, whether the security features specified in the response from the database 136 are present in the second image.

If a sufficient correspondence between the security features found in the second image and the security features specified in the response from the database is established by executing the program instructions 138, then by executing the program instructions 140 a corresponding signal is output via the user interface to inform a user of to inform the result of the review of the document 100.

As an alternative or in addition, such a signal indicating the result of the checking of the document can be output to a further device which processes this signal further. This further device can be, for example, a turnstile or the like, which is released upon receipt of a signal which indicates the authenticity of the document 100.

According to embodiments of the invention, the chip 110 can also be included in the verification of the document 100. For this purpose, the data stored in the electronic memory 114 of the chip 110 are read out by the interface 144 of the test device 112. These data can then be compared with data recognized from the first and / or second image. The correspondence of the data read from the electronic memory 114 and the data recognized from the first and / or second image can be a necessary prerequisite for passing the authenticity check of the document 100.

For example, the digitized data of the face image 102 read from the electronic memory 114 are reproduced next to the second image on the screen 142, so that the two images can be checked for consistency.

Furthermore, it is also possible for the fluorescent print 106, for example, to contain data that appear in the second image, since it was recorded with the aid of the UV radiation source 120. These data can also be compared with data retrieved from the electronic memory, in that these data are output, for example, on the screen 142 or compared with one another by machine.

The Figure 2 shows a corresponding flow chart. A first image with first image recording parameters is recorded in image 200 for checking a document, the first image recording parameters being standardized. The first image acquisition parameters are therefore always used, regardless of the type of document. Illumination in the IR range is preferably used for recording the first image, since the reflection behavior in the IR range is largely independent of the type of document and furthermore fluorescent security features are not addressed by irradiation in the IR range. The first image for recording the MRZ can therefore be recorded with a high quality for all document types on the basis of the standardized first image recording parameters, namely equally for document types with a paper surface and for document types with a plastic surface that is more reflective in the visible area.

In step 202, information, for example using OCR, is then recognized in the first image. This is information that directly or indirectly indicates the type of document, such as the country that issued the document.

In step 204, a database query is carried out with the aid of the information recognized in step 202. The database responds to the database query with second image recording parameters which are specific for the document type of the document to be checked.

In step 206, a second image, preferably an overall image, of the document is then recorded with the aid of the type-specific image recording parameters which the database output in step 204. In step 208, the optical security features of the document are then checked on the basis of the second image captured in this way.

The Figure 3 1 shows an embodiment of a data processing system 146 according to the invention. In contrast to the embodiment of Figure 1 but include the test devices 112 in the embodiment of FIG Figure 3 not the database 136. Instead, the test devices 112 each contain a communication interface 148 for communication via a network 150.

The network 150 can be an Ethernet, a virtual private network (VPN) or another communication network. In particular, an Internet Protocol (IP) can be used for communication via the network 150.

In the embodiment considered here, a database 152 and a database 154 can be queried by the test devices 112 via the network 150. The database 152 contains the second image recording parameters assigned to the document types. In the embodiment considered here, the second include Image recording parameters, in addition to information on the lighting I and the exposure T, also information on the frequency F which is to be used for the lighting to record the second image.

In contrast, the database 152 in the embodiment of FIG Figure 3 no information on the security features, as is the case with the database 136 in the embodiment of FIG Figure 1 the case is. These details are according to the embodiment of Figure 3 on the other hand, stored type-specifically in the separate database 154. In this embodiment, two database queries are generated by executing the program instructions 132, namely for querying the databases 152 and 154.
