Abstract

The invention consists of a method to prevent objects submerged into water from growth of algae and sea acorns. The principle is to diminish surface water flow and to substantially decrease light transmission, so the environment becomes harsh for water organisms and this will reduce settling of organisms on the surface of the object. This is accomplished by utilizing a cover with a density lower than water or to utilize a cover, preferably made of PVC. armed with polyester fibres and joined with a foam layer of PVC containing either closed micro spheres or closed air pockets or air cushions. The cover has a very low degree of transmission for light and the cover connects closely to the surface of the object. The cover will attach closely to the surface cause of its lower density than water.

Description

System to protect objects from growth on surfaces submerged into water
The invention describes a system to protect objects, such as boats and tools, from growth of water organisms or deposits on surfaces submerged in water.
5
Background
It is known from literature that ships and tools which are submerged in water will have growth of organisms on their surfaces and this causes great problems. Sea acorns, algae and mussels reduce speed and possibility to manoeuvre the ship
I O and they also increase the consumption of fuel (Ref. 1 and 2). Also functions of tools can be drastically altered by growth of sea acorns, algae and mussels or other water organisms. In order to avoid these problems various solutions have been presented. A system consisting of a belt which rubs off algae and other deposits from the surface of a boat is presented in the patent US 4.395.966. The
15 purpose is to purely mechanically rub away the deposits. Another system is presented in the US patent 6.443.085 utilizes a cover with holes of a predetermined size which is said to protect from growth of organisms on subjects submerged in water such as a boat. The size of the holes is completely vital for the function, according to the patent. 0
By using a cover with a lower density than water or which has air cushions are described in SE 527601 . This invention utilizes the movements between the boat and the cover and the cover must have friction enough to remove deposits. Another application WO 01 /81 167 A 1 describes a cover for inhibiting the 5 fouling for a vessel. The principle of this system is a cover resting in a vertical position. In order to achieve this, the covers have a density higher than water in the lower parts. To attach the cover to the boat it is necessary to use ropes and/or special tools to keep it in place. 0
This invention
A background to the invention described below is the references 3. 4 and 5. In the reference 3 "Settlingsval hos havstulpaner" the first step in the settling cycle of the sea acorn is described. The first step is the formation of the nauplius larv. The next step in the development is the forming ot a cyprid lar\ which search foi a suitable surface tor settling Signals from the environment can affect the choice of attaching oi not attaching on the surface Such factors are tor example vvatei flow close the settling surface light conditions, and the structure of the settling 5 surface When the larva finds a suitable surface it will produce protein glue that cures in watei The glue is ver\ strong and it is ver> difficult to scrub of the surface The final step is that the larva then evolves into a full) developed sea acorn Sea acorns can normal l\ grow down to 6 in of water depth, deeper down the light conditions are not acceptable
I O
Even other water organisms like algae need light to develop and reproduce Todav different kinds ot yacht paints tor painting the outer bottom of the boat are used to protect the surface from growth of vvatei organisms However these vacht paints release large portions ot poison substances which have verv serious
15 consequences on the water environment
The invention described below is intended to effective!) hinder the growth ot watei organisms on obiects submerged in water without anv material containing poison substances that can leak out in the watei 0
Description of the invention
The description of the invention is intended to protect the bottom of boats oi othei obiects submerged in vvatei from growth ot algae oi sea acorns The boat oi the obiect should be driven or moved up upon a covei which has a lowei densit} 5 than water and that is attached to the bridge The lowei densit} than vvatei can be achieved selecting propei material or b> attaching an pockets in the covet The material suited for the covei is tor example polyethylene, polypropylene that both can be armed with polyestei fibres A preferred solution is to utilize a PVC covei with a thickness of 0 2 to 0 8 mm armed with polyester fibre tor example 0 SCANPLAN 5 140PF (Scantarp. Kuopio. Finland) oi NAIZI l PS ADR PHTALATF. FREF (NAIZI I INC . C anada) Both these two mateπas are phthalate free This covei is combined foi example bv welding with foam ol PVC (ExpancelΦ) The foam contains microspheres, in which gas is encapsulated and this result in a lifting force to the covei The gas tilled spheres are complete!} closed and therefore the\ cannot be filled with vvatei The PVC foam has a thickness of about 4 mm ( interval 2 to 8 mm ) An example of such material is polyethylene foam A lveolit TA4000 ( DAFA A/S. Denmark )
5 Anothei feature of the cover is lo significantl} reduce the amount of light that is transmitted through the covet into the watei This can be achieved b\ adding additives to PVC A preferred coloui is NCS F4050-R90B which is relative!} dark blue that is suitable tor the environment and results in a pleasant blue coloui This is important since the covei is attached to a bridge Other colours
I O can also be used Since the cover has a lower densit} than water it is floating, and when the boat is driven on to it the cover will close!} attach to the surface of the boat This will reduce the amount of surface water around the boat and reduce the possibiht} tor the cyprid larva to settle at the surface Furthermore the light will be significant!} reduced which decrease the possibilities toi algae and sea
15 acorns, to develop and to reproduce In this example the cover is supposed to be attached to the bridge but it could of course also be attached to the boat preset attachment points Furthermoie it has been proposed that the boat is moved oi driven to the covei . but of course it is also possible tor the cover to be drawn under the boat or the tool and then be attached ropes on either the bridge oi 0 the obiecl
Since the cover has a lowei densit} oi the covei contains air cushions, the obiect will push down the covei and the covei will attach close!} to the surface of the obiect In another preferred example the covei can have a slit in order to allow a 5 deep keel that will not be enclosed the cover in difference to the rest of the submerged boat
The choice of material tor the covei is made in such a vva_\ that it does not release an} poisons substances into the uatei see examples above Il is also possible to 0 use various types ot natural textiles such as cotton linen, hemp, cellulose fibres or different types ot synthetic substances In another preferred design the outer borders of the cover could contain perforated channels so that an could be pumped through these holes in wintertime to keep the sides of the boat or tool ice free
