Abstract

A grounding element (1) is provided for providing a ground terminal (4) in a vehicle. The grounding element is made in one piece and formed by a first part (2) adapted to be inserted into a second part (3) by a tool. The second part is expandable upon insertion of the first part into the second part and the grounding element is formed by a material harder than the frame of a vehicle to expand into said frame.

Description

A GROUNDING ELEMENT
TECHNICAL FIELD
The present invention relates to a grounding element. In particular the present invention relates to a grounding element for use in a vehicle.
BACKGROUND In a vehicle such as a truck or a bus a grounding element is typically provided. The grounding element serves as a terminal for the electrical system of the vehicle. The grounding element is usually provided in the frame of the vehicle and the frame acts as a conductor connected to a terminal of the battery of the vehicle.
When mounting a grounding element it is desired to provide a grounding element having good electrical properties and which at the same time is easy to mount.
Conventional grounding elements are for example described in WO 2007028882 and EP0575259, which describe grounding elements for railways. For vehicles it is common to punch a hole in the frame, polish the hole and apply a screw.
Existing solutions for vehicles is cumbersome and expensive. Also in the future higher demands will be put on performance for grounding elements for less resistance and more robust fixation.
Hence there exists a need for an improved grounding element for a vehicle. SUMMARY It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved grounding element for a vehicle, in particular for a heavy vehicle such as a truck or a bus.
This object and others are obtained by the grounding element as set out in the appended claims.
Thus, a grounding element is provided for providing a ground terminal in a vehicle. The grounding element is formed by a first part adapted to be inserted into a second part by a tool. The second part is expandable upon insertion of the first part into the second part and the grounding element is formed by a material hard enough to expand into the frame of a vehicle.
The invention also extends to a vehicle comprising a grounding element according to the above.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
The present invention will now be described in more detail by way of non- limiting examples and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:

- Fig. 2 is a view of a grounding element when placed in position in a frame of a vehicle.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION In Fig. 1 a grounding element 1 is shown. The grounding element 1 is made in one piece and comprises a first upper part 2 which is inserted into a second lower part 3 during assembly thereby causing the lower part to expand.
The first part 2 has an outer surface designed to lock into contact with the inner side of the second part 3. The inner side of the first part 2 is designed to receive a suitable tool, for inserting to first part 2 into the second part 3 during assembly. In accordance with one embodiment the inside of the first part is designed to receive a blind rivet tool. The inside of the first part can for example be threaded.
The second part has an outside formed to expand into the side of a hole in a frame of a vehicle. For example the outside of the second part can have flanges or other types of protruding fragments. The inside of the second part is formed to receive the first part.
The second part further comprises a bottom portion constituting an electrical terminal 4 when the grounding element is assembled in a hole in a frame of a vehicle.
In Fig. 2 the grounding element 1 shown in Fig. 1 is shown when assembled in a hole of a frame 5 of a vehicle. When assembled in a hole of the frame the grounding element expands and provides good electrical connection to the frame of the vehicle serving as a conductor to ground. Hereby the electrical terminal 4 of the element 1 will constitute a good ground connection. - A -
The grounding element as described herein is cheaper to manufacture easier to assemble and will also provide better electrical properties than conventional grounding element used today.
The grounding element can for example be formed like a Quicksert. However Quicksert is designed to be used in thermoplastics and is not suitable or designed to be used as a grounding element mounted in the frame of a vehicle.
The grounding element is formed by a relatively hard electrically conducting material so that when the first part is inserted into the second part the second part expands into the frame of a vehicle. The grounding element can in accordance with one embodiment be made of a material having good electrical properties and good corrosion resistance. For example the grounding element can be made of steel with a Cr-6 (chromium-6) free coating can be used. Hence during assembly the grounding element 1 is placed in a hole in the frame of a vehicle. The first part is inserted into the second part for example using a blind rivet tool whereby the second part is caused to expand and fixate into the frame.
The grounding elementi can be easily mounted into a frame requiring only one assembly step since it can be mounted from one side using a blind rivet tool or a similar tool.

Claims

1. A grounding element (1 ) for providing a ground terminal (4) in a vehicle, characterized in that the grounding element (1 ) is made in one piece comprising a first part (2) adapted to be inserted into a second part (3) by a tool, the second part (3) being expandable upon insertion of the first part (2) into the second part (3), the grounding element (1 ) being formed by a material harder than the frame (5) of a vehicle to expand into said frame (5).
2. The grounding element according to claim 1 , characterized in that the grounding element (1 ) is made of a material having good electrical properties and good corrosion resistance.
3. The grounding element according to claim 2, characterized in that the grounding element (1 ) is made of steel having a Cr-6 (chromium-6) free coating.
4. A vehicle having a frame (5) provided with at least one grounding element (1 ) according to any of claims 1 - 3.
