Abstract

The invention relates to a method for obtaining information concerning the access to a plurality of content accessible by individuals having access apparatuses (I). To this end, the method comprises obtaining a graphical representation including aggregated information on an amount of accesses of at least one piece of content from the plurality of content by a panel of individuals, the panel of individuals including individuals accessing or having accessed at least one piece of content of a subassembly of content of the plurality of content, and controlling a display of said graphical representation so that a user can select at least one piece of content from the displayed graphical representation.

METHOD FOR OBTAINING INFORMATION RELATING TO CONTENT CONSULTATIONS AND ASSOCIATED EQUIPMENT

The present invention relates to obtaining information relating to content consultations. "Content" means any type of information, whatever its nature (text, sound, video, film, television program, etc.), their form (analog, digital) and their mode of access ( television, computer network such as the Internet, telephone network, radio network, etc.). The number of content sources is now considerable. Even in the area of television, tens or even hundreds of channels are currently available to the general public. If we add the sources of information available via the Internet for example, this number becomes even difficult to quantify. Given this proliferation, it is therefore difficult for an individual to identify one or more content that he might be interested in consulting, especially if he does not know precisely what kind of content he wants. consult at a given moment.

In particular, the reading of previously designed content guides, for example television program guides, can be quite time-consuming and can require a sustained intellectual effort. In addition, any criticisms that these guides may contain are very subjective and therefore do not always constitute relevant suggestions.

Moreover, the known automatic methods of assisting the search for content do not identify, with a good level of certainty, content likely to interest a user. This is largely due to the impossibility for a machine to determine the tastes of a user, or for the user to express his tastes in a way understandable by a machine. For example, selecting programs using categories and / or keywords may be inefficient. Indeed, two contents of the same category, for example "entertainment", responding to the same keyword, for example "music", can be appreciated very differently by a user. This is for example the case if the first content thus identified corresponds to a modern music clip, while the second content corresponds to a classical concert.

In addition, such a method requires setting up an indexing of each content, for example to assign a category and keywords, which can be heavy and is not free of errors.

For its part, a publisher or broadcaster may find it difficult to assess the success of the distribution of its content, given the existence of competing content and the diversity of content users.

An object of the present invention is to improve this situation.

The invention thus proposes a client system or device for obtaining information relating to consultations of a plurality of contents accessible to individuals having consultation devices. This system or device comprises:

means for obtaining a graphical representation comprising aggregated information relating to a quantity of consultations of at least one of the plurality of contents by a panel of individuals, the panel of individuals consisting of individuals consulting or having consulted at least one content of a subset of the plurality of contents, and

means for controlling a display of said graphic representation, so as to allow a user to select at least one content from the displayed graphical representation. The use of a panel of individuals thus constituted makes it possible to retain individuals according to the contents they consult, that is to say their behavior or even their tastes.

In addition, the aggregation of information about the quantity of consultations on the panel of individuals makes it possible to take advantage of the collective intelligence, while being able to preserve the anonymity of the individuals constituting the panel. Advantageously, the aggregated information obtained relates to a quantity of consultations of each content of the plurality of contents consulted by the panel of individuals. We do not content ourselves then with information on the most consulted contents for example. Depending on the access mode of the contents of the plurality of contents, for example in synchronous or asynchronous mode, the constitution of the panel and / or obtaining aggregated information obtained may vary. By way of example, it may be advantageous to obtain aggregated information substantially in real time for contents accessible in synchronous mode.

The means for controlling a display of the graphical representation may include a hardware or software module capable of generating and transmitting a control signal and / or video signal intended to trigger the display of the graphical representation. If the system or client device considered has display means, such as a screen, the control signal and / or video signal will advantageously be routed appropriately to show the graphical representation on these display means. The system or device may optionally include means for viewing at least one of the plurality of contents. These means of consultation may include any entity capable of rendering, visually and / or audibly, or otherwise, content selected to a user. The consultation means may for example include a display screen possibly associated with a speaker. The means of consultation include a software module or hardware for controlling / controlling such an entity.

Alternatively, the content consultation can be done using another system or device.

The system or device may advantageously include means for selecting said subset of the plurality of contents. In doing so, he can participate in the constitution of the panel of individuals and influence the graphical representation obtained.

These selection means can take any conceivable form. As non-limiting examples, they may include a navigation tool within the displayed graphical representation, associated with a validation tool of an option on which navigation has stopped, such as a keyboard, a mouse , a moving wheel, a joystick, or other. They also include a software module for processing the information and data provided by the navigation tool and / or the validation tool. They can be arranged to make a local selection or to transmit information representative of the selection made to a remote entity (for example using a remote control).

The invention further provides a method for obtaining information relating to consultations of a plurality of contents accessible to individuals having consultation devices. For this purpose, sources make contents accessible to a plurality of individuals. The content provided by these sources may concern any type of information, as recalled in the introduction. Individuals who have access to these content sources include a user having a client system or device C, which may be one or more of a computer C1, a television C2, a portable communication tool such as a telephone mobile C3, a set-top box or set top box, any combination of the aforementioned entities, or other (arrow 1). For its part, the client device C cooperates with the server S to define a panel of individuals that represents a subset of the users of the consultation devices I. As a variant, the definition of the panel of individuals could be carried out by the device client C alone, by the server S alone, or even using an intermediate entity (not shown in Figure 1).

The panel of individuals is defined as a subset of the users of the consultation devices I, whose content consultations are or have been communicated to the server S. It is more precisely made up of individuals consulting or having consulted at least one content of a given subset of contents from the sources mentioned above.

In the example illustrated in Figure 1, the client device C transmits to the server S, information relating to a given subset of contents (arrow 4). This subset of contents, which may comprise one or more contents, advantageously results from a content selection made by the user of the client device C. It will be noted that such a selection could also be done by means other than via the client device C, for example via a web interface provided by the provider of the accessible contents. The selection may for example consist of a choice of one or more contents among the set of accessible contents, presented to the user in a graphical representation, by means of display means of the client device C (or means displayed by the client device C). This selection is made by the user of the client device C only in the perspective of the definition of the panel of individuals. The graphic representation in question may be that which will be described below with reference to FIGS. 2A-2C. In this case, the selected subset of contents may concern a single content chosen by the user, or all of the accessible contents except for one of the contents that has been explicitly excluded by the user of the device. client C. In the case where the client device is a portable communication tool, such as the mobile phone C3, it could advantageously function as a remote control for a consultation device such as a television set C'4 or C'5 . For this purpose, the mobile phone C3 could be adapted to deliver a suitable control signal 7, such as an infrared signal, for example. The selection of a subset of contents could thus result from the choice of a program using such a remote control, for consultation purposes on one of the remote controlled devices.

Of course, the operations mentioned above can be repeated as many times as necessary, until a desired subset of contents is obtained.

In addition, other criteria can also be used to define the panel of individuals.

Thus, a geographical criterion, an accessible content type, a content distribution mode and / or an individual selection criterion can be used to determine the relevant panel of individuals.

As an illustration, the panel of individuals could consist of individuals, among all the individuals having consultation devices I for which the server S has collected consultation information, which consult or have consulted a television program selected by the user of the client device C, and who otherwise perform their consultation of content on the French territory, from television sets, in an analog format, via the X or Y radio broadcast channels.

According to another illustrative example, the panel of individuals could consist of individuals who consult or have viewed a video selected by the user of the client device C, and who also consult videos in MPEG format, these consultations being carried out since the X 'websites or

Note that in these examples, the definition of the panel of individuals is performed completely anonymously, the user of the client device C knowing nothing of the identity of the individuals constituting the panel. Alternatively, the panel of individuals could be constituted by taking into account certain criteria for selecting individuals, such as an age group for example. The panel could even incorporate individuals selected specifically according to their identity, for example friends of the user of the client device C. From the choices made by the user of the client device C and transmitted to the server S, the latter realizes an aggregation, for the panel of individuals resulting from these choices, information relating to the consultation of contents obtained from the consultation devices I.

The aggregated information relates to the amount of viewing of at least one content by the panel of individuals.

Advantageously, they relate to the amount of consultation of each content consulted by the panel of individuals. We thus have the amount of consultation, not only for the contents most consulted by the panel of individuals, but also for the less consulted contents. The aggregated information can then be transmitted to the client device C (arrow 5), for example upon request from the client device. The user of the client device C can thus have an audience of one, several or all the contents consulted by the panel of individuals.

The client system or device C thus comprises a software and / or hardware module designed to obtain a graphical representation comprising the aggregated information received from the server S. This graphic representation may be that which will be described below with reference to FIGS. 2A-2C, or other. Depending on the nature of the client system or device C, the graphic representation can be obtained in directly displayable form, or it can consist of all the information necessary for the graphic formatting prior to its display.

In this case, the client device can obtain an instant audience of the contents within the panel of individuals. In any case, the information relating to the quantity of content consultation respects the anonymity of the individuals constituting the panel, because of their aggregation for the entire panel of individuals.

Advantageously, the client device C may furthermore receive information relating to the content delivered by the content sources, such as descriptions of these contents including, for example, a summary, an indication of duration, a format, or others (arrow 6). . In this case, a link is advantageously made between the contents accessible to the client device C from the content sources and said descriptive information of the contents.

For example, the aggregated information obtained from the server S can be highlighted on a graphical representation of the contents accessible at the client device C, in relation to said content descriptive information.

The operations described in the example above can be implemented using computer programs including appropriate code instructions, at the client device C, the server S and / or any other intermediate entity.

The embodiment of the invention that has just been described allows an aid in the identification of contents for the user of the client device C.

This content identification aid may be based on a similarity of behavior between this user and at least some individuals having the I consultation devices. This is particularly the case when each selection of content by the user for purposes of consultation is taken into account to constitute the panel of individuals.

The user of the client device C can then obtain information on the quantities of consultations of a panel of individuals who exhibit a behavior similar to his, that is to say of which the individuals consult or have consulted the same contents as him. The embodiment just described has a number of advantages.

In particular, the mechanism described above is not very greedy in terms of memory space, amount of calculations and signaling exchanged.

Indeed, the server S can be content to memorize a correspondence between the contents consulted by the users of the consultation devices I (for example a simple identifier of each of these contents), the information relating to the quantity of consultation of the contents and the information about each defined panel of individuals (eg a simple panel identifier).

In addition, the contents, as well as the descriptive information of these contents, are not stored on the server S, but on one or more other equipment such as servers.

Finally, the aggregated information relating to the quantity of content consultation is obtained at the client device C after a simple exchange of messages (arrows 4 and 5). The fact that this aggregated information is pushed from the server S to the client C avoids the transmission of additional requests and responses.

In addition, the server S may have information relating to the quantities of consultations of contents perfectly up to date. This can also be the case of the client device C, when the aggregated information is transmitted to it by the server S reactively. The user of the client device C can then have information substantially in real time. As for example, the information obtained at the client device C could be updated every 5 minutes or less.

Each of these figures shows, at successive times, a graphical interface that can be presented to the user of the client system or device C by display means. These display means may for example consist of a screen of a client device C. The graphic interface illustrated in FIG. 2A corresponds, for example, to a first instant, where the user of the client device C has not yet selected content from among all the available contents. On the graphical representation 11 of FIG. 2A, there is a large quantity of consulted contents represented by respective rectangles. Among these contents, the contents 8, 9 and 10 appear more particularly consulted, as attested by the large size of the corresponding rectangles.

It is then considered that the user of the client device C selects one of the contents, for example from the graphical representation 11 of FIG. 2A. This content can be any of the contents accessible to this user. It may for example be a science fiction television series, noted SF in Figure 2A. This selection may possibly be accompanied by the display of this television series on part 12 of the graphical interface.

The selection of the content SF has the effect of modifying the definition of the panel of individuals formed relative to the user of the client device C. The panel of individuals is thus reduced to individuals with consultation devices I who are in the process of consult the SF television series selected by the user. It is possible that the contents 14 and 15 also consist of science fiction television series, which may include the SF series itself and / or other series. In any case, it is content particularly followed, and therefore undoubtedly appreciated by fans of the SF series.

In this way, the user of the client device C can discover content likely to please him, by taking advantage of the collective intelligence of the panel of individuals that he himself helped to define.

A different graphical representation, organized according to the same principles, would be observed at later observation times.

In addition, the user of the client device C could continue to modify the panel of individuals at a later time. This could be achieved for example by selecting, or otherwise excluding, one or more of the contents appearing on the graphical representation 11 at this time.

It is also possible to go back to an earlier definition of the panel of individuals, for example using a history of the states of this panel, or even to constitute an entirely new panel of individuals.

Naturally, many other graphic representations than those illustrated in Figure 2A-2C may be used in the context of the present invention. In particular, when the consultation devices I have access to the contents in asynchronous mode, the graphical representation advantageously shows the contents having been consulted over a given observation period, rather than the contents which are being consulted in time. real.

Similarly, the presentation of aggregated information relating to the amount of content consultation by the panel of individuals can take various forms, replacing or complementing the graphic representation just described. For example, we can think of a presentation indicating the absolute number of consultations of each content consulted, or the percentage of consultations of each content in percentage.

Although the present invention has been more particularly described in its application to help identify content for a user, other applications are also possible.

In particular, obtaining aggregated information relating to the quantity of content consultation by a panel of individuals may be used, for example by a publisher or a content distributor, to evaluate the success of distributing content to of a given panel of individuals.

This can for example make it possible to check whether a targeted public target has been reached, to determine whether non-target audiences have been reached, or to make a typology of the individuals who viewed a content. It can also be used to track the evolution of the audience of a content or set of content with a given panel of individuals, relative to other content.

means for receiving information relating to consultations of a plurality of contents accessible to individuals having consultation devices (I), and means for producing and transmitting to the client system or device aggregated information relating to a amount of viewing of at least one of the plurality of contents by a panel of individuals, the panel of individuals consisting of individuals consulting or having accessed at least one of a subset of the plurality of contents .
