Description

Bathing Support
The present invention relates to a bathing support and particular, but not exclusively, to a bathing support which enables a bather to comfortably sit against the tap end of a bath tub.
Domestic bath tubs generally comprise a hot and cost water tap arranged at one end thereof for supplying water into the bath. The taps extend into the bath so that water falling from the taps can fill the bath. Once the bath has been suitably filled, the bather then typically sits facing the taps while resting back against the smooth rear wall of the bath.
However, it is not uncommon for two persons to share a bath, for example when bathing children. In this case, one bather will typically sit facing the taps while the other bather will sit near the tap end of the bath with their back to the taps. This end of the bath is not so comfortable, since the taps will usually poke within the bathers back preventing the bather from relaxing. Moreover, with two bathers in the bath, in particular children, care is needed to ensure that the bather does not fall against the taps and that any hot water flowing out from the hot water tap does not scald the bather.
I have now devised a bathing support which alleviates the above-mentioned problems.
In accordance with the present invention there is provided a bathing support for a bath tub, the bathing support comprising a support member for supporting a bather in a reclined position within the bath tub, the support member comprising side panels which extend rearwardly of the support member to support the support member from the side of the bath tub, wherein the bathing support further comprises means for securing the support member with the bath tub.
The side panels preferably support the support member in spaced relation to the bath side and extend substantially perpendicularly to the support member. Accordingly, the depth of the side panels determine the separation of the support member from the bath side. Preferably, the support member comprises a support surface which may be contoured to provide a comfortable surface against which a bather may rest.
The support member and side panels may be preferably formed of plastic and may further comprise a cushioned cover. Preferably, the side panels are formed integrally with the support member.
The means for securing the bathing support preferably comprises an adjustable clamp which clamps to a bath tap or taps mounted to the bath. When the bathing support is suitably orientated within the bath, the support member preferably extends from a position below the outlet of the taps to a position above the outlet of the taps. This prevents any hot water flowing out from the hot water tap from falling directly onto a bather.
Preferably, the base of the support member rests upon the base of the bath.
The adjustable clamp is preferably secured to the bathing support by a pair of serrated arms which extend rearwardly from the rear of the support member.
Preferably the serrated arms extend from channels formed within the rear of the support member. The arms are preferably free to move within the channels so that the support member can be repositioned relative to the bath to accommodate baths having different depths.
The clamp preferably comprises first and second clamping members which extend between a pair of frame members. Each serrated arm preferably extends through a slot formed in a slot housing that is secured to the frame members. The slot housings can preferably rotate with respect to the frame to members to enable the support member to pivot with respect to the base of the bath.
The serrated arms are preferably prevented from being removed from within the slot by a barb formed within the slot housing. Preferably, the barb is resiliently biased onto the serrations. The first clamping member is preferably rigidly coupled between the frame members and the second clamping member is preferably slidably coupled between the frame members. Preferably, the second clamping member is resiliently biased toward the first clamping member to clamp the bath tap or taps therebetween.
Preferably, the first and second clamping members comprise a flexible material formed on clamping faces thereof, for gripping the bath tap or taps.
The weight of a bather resting upon the support member is taken by the side panels which rest upon the bath side and the base of the support member which rests upon the bottom of that the bath tub. The adjustable clamp serves to hold the support member in position so that the support does not slide around the bath.
To further prevent any slipping of the support member, the support member may comprise a plurality of suction cups positioned along the periphery thereof for engaging with the bath, to hold the support in position.
The preferred embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is an exploded view of the bathing support of the present invention, from the rear;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the bathing support of the present invention from the rear;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the bathing support of the present invention as illustrated in figure 2, that has been suitably orientated;
Figure 4 is a magnified view of the clamping mechanism; and
Figure 5 is a schematic illustration of the bathing support of the present invention with a bath tub. Referring to the drawings and initially figures 1 to 3, there is shown the bathing support 1 of the present invention. The bathing support 1 comprises a support member 2 against which a bather (not shown) can rest within a bath tub 3. The support member 2 comprises a support surface 2a, an upper region 4, a base region 5 and a pair of side panels 6 which extend rearwardly of the support member 2 from each side thereof. The side panels 6 extend substantially perpendicularly to the support member 2 and are arranged to abut the side walls of the bath tub 3 to space the support member 2 from the sides of the bath tub 3. The support surface 2a may be contoured to provide a comfortable surface against which a bather may rest.
The rear of the support member 2 is provided with a channel 7 at each side thereof, which extend substantially parallel to the side panels 6. When viewed in cross- section, the channels 7 comprise a narrow neck section (not shown) extending from the rear surface of the support member 2, to a broader base section (not shown) formed within the support member 2. Extending from each channel 7 there is provided a serrated arm 8. The serrated arms 8 are prevented from being removed from the respective channel 7 by a stop (not shown) formed at the end of each arm 8 positioned within the channel 7. The stop is dimensioned so that it can slide along the base section of the channel 7, but is prevented from being removed through the narrow neck section.
The serrated arms 8 extend rearwardly of the support member 2 and engage with an adjustable clamp 9, which is used to secure the support member 2 to taps 10 formed upon the bath 3, to prevent the support member 2 from sliding around the bath 3. The clamp 9 comprises first and second clamping members 1 1 , 12 which extend between a pair of frame members 13 and are arranged substantially parallel to each other. The first clamping member 11 is rigidly secured to the frame members 13 via fixing means (not shown), such as nuts and bolts, while the second clamping member 12 is slidably coupled to each frame member 13 so that it can move relative to the first clamping member 11. Opposing faces of the clamping members 11 , 12 are formed with a resiliently flexible material 14, such as a foamed material, so that the clamping members 11 , 12 can grip the taps 10 when secured therebetween.
Each frame member 13 is substantially hollow with a stop 15 provided at one end thereof. The inner side of each frame member 13 is formed with a slot (not shown) at its upper end through which the ends of the second clamping member 12 may pass. Secured to the upper side of the second clamping member 12, within each frame member 13, there is provided a spring 16 which abuts the respective stop 15. In this manner, the second clamping member 12 becomes biased toward the first clamping member 1 1.
Each frame member 13 is rotatably coupled to a slot housing 17 which comprises a slot 18 for receiving one of the pair of serrated arms 8. The slot housing 17 further comprises an actuator 19 formed with a barb (not shown) on its inner surface, which is resiliently biased onto the respective serrated arm 8 by a spring (not shown). The serrations 20 are arranged upon each arm 8 with the sloping face 21 of each serration 20 facing the clamp 9, such that the arms 8 may pass into the slots 18 formed with the respective slot housing 17, but are prevented from being removed therefrom by the barb. To remove the arms 8 from the respective slot housing 17 and thus the clamp 9, the actuators 19 must be pressed to disengage the barb from the serrations 20.
In use, the second clamping member 12 is urged away from the first clamping member 11 of the clamp 9, under the bias of the clamp springs 16 and the tap outlets 22 are positioned therebetween. The second clamping member 12 is then released and the clamp springs 16 force the second clamping member 12 toward the first clamping member 11 to secure the clamp 9 to the tap outlets 22.
The support member 2 is then positioned in front of the taps 10 and the serrated arms 8 are passed through the respective slots 18 in the respective housing 17 until the side panels 6 abut the side of the bath 3. The ability of the arms 8 to move within the channels 7 formed at rear of the support member 2 enable the support member 2 to move relative to the base of the bath 3 so that the base 5 of the support member 2 can rest upon the base of the bath 3. In addition, since the slot housings 17 are rotatably coupled to the respective frame member 13 of the clamp 9, the support member 2 can be reclined, as shown in figure 4, to enable a bather to lie back within the bath 3 at the tap end of the bath 3.
The clamp 9 ensures that the support member 2 does not slip from side to side around the bath 3. Moreover, suction cups (not shown) arranged at the base 5 of the support member 2 further prevents the support member 2 from slipping within the bath 3.
The support member 2 comprises three contact regions with the bath 3, which take the weight of the bather. These include the contact of the side panels 6 with the bath side and the base 5 of the support member 2 with the bottom of the bath 3. Accordingly, the clamp 9 does not take any of the weight of the bather.
The support member 2 extends from a position below the bath taps 10 to a position above the bath taps 10 and so will shield a child (not shown) from falling against the taps 10, as shown in figure 5. The upper region 4 of the support member is provided with a curved lip 23 which extends over the clamp 9 toward the bath taps 10.
However, even in the event that a child was to turn on the hot water tap, the support member 2 which extends down to the base of the bath 3, would further act to prevent any hot water from falling directly onto the child.
From foregoing therefore, it is evident that the bathing support enables a bather to comfortably lie against the tap end of a bath tub and also serves to prevent children from falling against the taps or from becoming scalded by hot water falling from the hot water tap.
