Abstract
The present invention relates to a safety feature whereby a metal plate, fixed to a material softer than the metal, is provided with increased resistance towards forced removal. This is achieved by a device and a method for securing a metal plate fixed to a frame comprising the steps of; drilling a first hole into the front of the frame substantially perpendicular to said frame in a position aligned with at least one of the screws fixing the plate to the frame, drilling a second hole into the frame either from one side of the frame or from another side of the frame, said second hole being substantially perpendicular to said first hole and being in connection with said first hole, inserting a cylinder shaped nut into the second hole, inserting the distal end of a substantially elongated cylinder shaped bolt into said first hole, bringing the bolt in connection with the cylinder shaped nut, and fastening the plate to the frame with screws passing through the transversal hole thereby bringing said plate in connection with the bolt. The device according to the invention is easily mounted from the front and the side of e.g. a door jamb or a window frame.
Description
- The present invention relates to a safety feature whereby a metal plate, fixed to a material softer than the metal, is provided with increased resistance towards forced removal.
- This is relevant for securing window hinges fixed to wooden frames, strike plates of locking systems fixed to wooden door jambs or other types of hinges on locked entries. When a locked door or window is opened by force, e.g. using a crowbar, the strike plate of the lock or the hinges are often the weak points, and brute force can cause the window frame or the door jamb to break in the position where the strike plate or the hinge is affixed.
- From
DK 165422 - However, a major disadvantage of this solution is the limited access to the back of the door jamb when trying to drill the hole for the nut securing the headless screw in the door jamb. An object of the present invention is to provide a method and a device for securing a metal plate fixed to a frame from forced removal, which is easily mounted, for instance in a door jamb or a window frame.
- This is achieved by a method for securing a metal plate fixed to a frame comprising the steps of; drilling a first hole into the front of the frame substantially perpendicular to said frame in a position aligned with at least one of the screws fixing the plate to the frame, drilling a second hole into the frame either from one side of the frame or from another side of the frame, said second hole being substantially perpendicular to said first hole and being in connection with said first hole, inserting a cylinder shaped nut into the second hole, said nut provided with a slot at least at the end now facing out of the hole, inserting the distal end of a substantially elongated cylinder shaped bolt into said first hole, said bolt comprising a slot at the proximal end, a transversal hole close to said proximal end and a thread at the distal end, said transversal hole preferably threaded, bringing the bolt in connection with the cylinder shaped nut, and fastening the plate to the frame with first screw(s) and/or second screw(s), said first screw(s) passing through the transversal hole thereby bringing said plate in connection with the bolt.
- By the present invention a method and a device for providing increased resistance towards forced removal to a metal plate fixed to a frame is provided, said device being easily mounted from the front and the side of e.g. a door jamb or a window frame.
- More than one device according to the invention can be applied by re-using the method according to the invention, i.e. applying more than one bolt for each plate thereby securing the plate even better.
- When securing a metal plate already installed on a frame it is most likely necessary to detach the metal plate prior to installing the device according to the invention. This is typically done by loosening the screws fixing the plate to the frame.
- The threading on the exterior of the bolt of the device according to the invention can cover part of or extend over the full length of the bolt. In a preferred embodiment of the invention the threading of the bolt extends over the full length thereby easing manufacturing because the bolt can be cut, e.g. from a threaded steel rod followed by applying a slot to one end of the bolt.
- In a preferred embodiment of the invention all of the parts of the device are manufactured in stainless steel, but it is realised that other types of corrosion resistant hard metal might be used.
- In a preferred embodiment of the invention the slot at one end of the cylinder shaped nut is a flat-head type providing visible control of the angular orientation of the nut inside the hole in the side of the door jamb, thereby easing the mount of the bolt into the nut inside the door jamb. In another embodiment of the invention the cylinder shaped nut is provided with slots at both ends, whereby the slot is visible from outside the hole regardless of which end of the nut is facing out.
- In other embodiments of the device according to the invention, the slots at the ends of the bolt and the nut are any combination of flat-head slots, cross-slots, torx slots, hexagonal sockets or any other type of screwdriver slots.
- Below is a detailed description of the device according to the invention referring to
figures 1 and2 illustrating the device installed in a door jamb, said device securing the strike plate of a snap lock system. - Fig. 1
- is a cross-sectional vertical view of a snap lock system and the device according to the invention inside a door jamb; and
- Fig. 2
- is a perspective view of a strike plate and the device according to the invention inside a door jamb.
-
Fig. 1 shows the device according to the invention installed in adoor jamb 3. Asnap lock system 2 provides a lock for thedoor 20. The strike plate 1 of thesnap lock system 2 is fixed to both thedoor jamb 3 and thebolt 4 by means of thescrew 18 through the transversal hole 13 in thebolt 4. Thebolt 4 is inserted through a hole in thedoor jamb 3, said hole drilled from thefront 12 of thedoor jamb 3. Thebolt 4 is fixed to thedoor jamb 3 by means of the cylinder shaped nut 5 inserted into a hole drilled from theside 11 of thedoor jamb 3 with theslot 6 facing outwards the drilled hole, thereby providing visibility of the angular orientation of the nut 5 helping to receive the threadedpart 9 of thebolt 4. Thebolt 4 can be rotated by means of theslot 7. -
Fig. 2 shows the device according to the invention inside thedoor jamb 3. The strike plate 1 is fixed to thedoor jamb 3 with thescrews screw 18 is in connection with the strike plate 1, thedoor jamb 3 and thebolt 4. Prior to installing the device according to the invention, the strike plate 1 was fixed to thestrike plate 3 with three screws of thesame type 8. After installing the device according to the invention, one of said screws has possibly been replaced by anothertype 18 for fixing the strike plate 1 to both thedoor jamb 3 and thebolt 4. It might be necessary to expand a hole in thedoor jamb 3 for fitting thescrew 18 that matches the transversal hole 13 in thebolt 4. -
Fig. 1 andfig. 2 show installation of the device according to the invention wherein the cylinder shapednut 6 is inserted from theside 11 of thedoor jamb 3. Thenut 6 can just as well be inserted from theside 10 of thedoor jamb 3 providing the same protection to the strike plate 1. - In the case of securing a locking system of a mounted door or window by applying the method and the device according to the invention, the
nut 6 can be installed from theside 10 of theframe 3, because theopposite side 11 is typically facing a wall and is thereby inaccessible. After installation of the device according to the invention, the hole in theframe 3 with thenut 6 can be covered by e.g. joint filler to hide the appearance of the device according to the invention. - In the cases of e.g. preassembled door jambs or window frames which are yet to be mounted, the
side 11 of theframe 3 is accessible. Inserting thenut 6 from theside 11 provides an installation of the device according to the invention, which is completely hidden from the outside after installation in said door jamb or window frame. - When brute force is applied to enter the locked door in
fig. 1 , the forces will be distributed to the nut 5 providing increased protection against forced entry, compared to a situation where the strike plate is merely affixed to the door jamb. In the latter situation it is highly likely the door jamb will break along thedotted line 19 when brute force is applied to the door. Applying the device according to the invention eliminates thisweak point 19 in thedoor jamb 3.
