Whereas the present invention ss being described and illustrated in re! ation to an end -loading canon, commonly known In the art. ύ will be obvious to one s tilled in the art upon reading this desohotson that she handle arranqemenl of Ii inveniion has application oiuside end-loading cartons and protection for the invention should not therefore be considered as limited to only one application
Turning to the construction of the canon 160 from plank 10, a series of sequential folding and gluing operations are required, which preferaPly can be performed in a straight line machine, so that the carton 100 and/or blank 10 are not reouired to be ■ otafed Oi' inverted to complete the construction. The folding process is no? limited to rhar described below and can be altered aocordsng so particular manufacturing requirements.
Inner pans! 12 Is adher&d to an inside face of top panel 20 by folding the blank 10 aboui told ime 26, so that the second aide panel 14 and inner panel 12 overlay the Pottom panei 16 and href side panei 18, Giue is then applied to areas Gt , G2a/G2b, G3a/G3b/G3c end G3d The top panel 20 is then folded about fold line 22 so that it overlays the Inner panei 12 and becomes adhered thereto. Simultaneously, the corner panels 60a, 6Db1 60c and 6Od and snner handle flaps 62a, 62b are adhered to the top end (laps ?0a and 70b respectively,
Defoπnabie panei 52a/54a/5Ga and 52ab54o/56b{ is disposed between the adhered portions of the inner panei 12 and snner handle fiaps 62a. 62b and remains free of connection of the top panel 20 so (hat w may be deformed and erected into a hsndle flap support structure 80 as shown in Figures 2, 2A and 3 and described m detail below.
The prs-giued carion blank sn fiai form ss then erected s^to « tubular structure, she carton is loaded wsto articles from one or both ends and then the end flaps 70a, 6Sa, 06a and 64e; 70b, 68b, 66P and 64b are folded and glued to provide end closures of •he carton 100 as illustrated in Figure 4.
As the top end flaps 70a/70b are folded downwardly, the deformabie panel 52a/54a/56a and 52ab54b/56b rosy be partially set-up, this is illustrated sn Figure 2 To carry the carton 100, one or each handle flap and inner handle flap pair 50a/62«, 50b/62b is folded inwardly of the respective top end flap 70a, ?0b though a handle aperture I 5a. 15b whsch Is thereby formed. As the or each handle flap and inner handle flap pair 50a/62a or 50b/62h is folded inwardly, the respective rold lines 55a, 57a or 55b, 57b cause « tubular handle flap support structure 80 to be set-up from portions 52a. 54 a or 52. 54b of the respective deformabie panel a?">d a portion of the respective top end flap 70a or 70b, as shown sn Figures 2A and 3. As the handle flap support structure is set-up, further inward folding of the or each handle flap and inner handle flap pair 50a/62a, S0b/82b becomes limited. The or each handle flap and inner handle flap pair S0a/62a, 50b/62b is prevented from being foided 180 degrees into alignment with the inside face of top end Hap 70a/70b due to the handle flap <- support structure 80 providing a res-silent cushion.
This is illustrated in Figure 3 whsch shows an internal view of the folded handle flap and inner handle fiap pair S0a<62a and the handle Hap support structure 80 providing ihe resilient cushion and resisting further inward folding of the handle flap and inner \<) handle flap pair 50a/62a in this way the handle flap support structure 80 provides reinforcement of the handle structure and provides a structure which •« more comfortable by which a user can grasp the carton 100 for lifting
in ihe first exemplary embodiment described and illustrated, the series of parallel
: ; hnes 53a, 55a. 57a and 40a predetermine the shape and arrangement of the handle
Hap support structure 80 and determine the degree to which the Inward folding of the or each handle flap and inner handle flap pair 5ϋa/62at S0b/82b is resisted. The senes of parallel lines deime a detormabie portion which iβ juxtaposed and disposed between the inner handle flap 62a and the inner panel 12. The inner handle flap 82a k> and the inner panel 12 are each adhered to internal faces of the carton and thereby provide sh ength ro the carton 100 and to the handle structure.
In ihe first, embodiment shown, fold lines 40a & 40b are offset and not in alignment With the fold line 32a/32b between the top end flap 70a/?0b and the top panel 20.
> The off-set arrangement of fold lines 4ϋa/40b facilitates ihe partial automatic set-up of the handle flap support structure 80 when the blaw 10 is set-up into a carton 100 This is illustrated in figures 2 and 2a. As the top-end flaps 70a/70b are folded downwardly to close she carton end, panel 56a/56b of the handle flap support structure 80 does no- fold around the contour of the corner that is created between
<<; Mie top panel 20 and fop-end flap 70a 70b instead, due to the geometry of toe deforrnabie portion, panel oδa'SOb is pushed outwardly of the internal corner and thus panel 54a/54ρ is also forced out of overlapping, relationship wsm the top end flap F0a.;70b as depicted sn Figure 2A. In this way the specie but exemplary arrangement depscted facilitates an optional Initial set-up of the handle Hap support structure 80 when the carton Is first erected.
Similarly the fold lines 53a/S3b between the inner handle Hap 62a/82b and [he deformable panel 52a/54a/56a and 52a/54a/56a are offset and not In alignment With the fold ^ne 30a/30P abou* whsch the handle flap 50a/50b hinges such that when the carton 100 is erected, inward movement of the handle flap 50a causes portion 52a/52b of the deformable panel 52a ''54 ab' 6a, 52b/54b/56b to be pushed inwardly and upwardly toward the inner panel 12 This action causes the handle flap support structure 30 automatically to be set-up by virtue of deploying the handle
The deformable portion concertinas as the handle flap and inner handle Hap pair 50a/62a and 50b/62b are folded Inwardly and thereby a cushion rs provided around which the handle flap and inner handle flap pair 50a/62a a^rj 50P/62b may be folded. In this way the handle flap support structure 80 is automatically set-up by virtue of deploying Hie handle flap attached internally to the canon as it is se;-uρ and formed. The handle flap support structure 80 may be formed from maleπa! not integral to the blank 10 from which the rnasn body of the carton 100 is formed.
A second embodiment o? the Invention is illustrated in Figures 5 to 8A. The second embodiment is similar so the first embodiment and therefore like references numerals have been used to denote like features, albesi the reference numerals have been raised by a factor 1IOO' to indicate that they relate to the second embodiment, Since the second embodiment ss Similar sn many respects to the arrangement illustrated in respect of the first embodiment, only the differences are described in detail.
in the second embodiment the fold lines 153a/153b are ;n alignment with fold lines 100a/ 130b and fold lines i 4Qa.;i <i0b are in alignment with fold lines I 32a/I 32b
The handle flap support structure 180 of the second embodiment ss created utilising the slack provided by the deformable portion 1 S2a/i 54a/ 156a which is created upon folding the outer handle flap I SOa inwardly of ihe top-end flap 170a in the second embodiment, W is the excess matedal, or slack provided between fold lines 140a and 153a relanve to Ihe spacing between fold lsnes 132a and 130a that facilitates the formation of ihe 3-dimenslonai handle Hap support structure 18O1 without depending upon me offset arrangement of the fold lines 30a and 53a and 32a and 56a, as the fisss embodiment. Whereas in the first embodiment both the off-set fold arrangement and the excess material provided by the deformable portion contribute to the setting- up of the handle flap support structure 80.
The second embodiment also differs from the first embodiment in that the deiormahie portion is separated, by means of cuts/slits 151a, 161 b, 161c and 161 d, from the adjacent glued portions 160 and 160 although in both embodiments the gaps 61 a, € lb, 61c, 81d or shts 16 Ia, 161 b, 181 c and 161 d enable she deformabie portion 52«'54a/5Ga and I 52a/154a/156a to be erected snto a 3D structure,
it will be obvious to one skilled in the art upon reading the foregoing thai various amendments and alterations may be made without departing from the scope of the present invention, for example, the size and shape of the panels may be adjusted to accommodate articles ol differing ssze or shape. The handle aperture and flap may be shaped In a different manner; the handle flap support structure may take various formats and Indeed may not solely be formed from an inner panel integral with the remainder of the blank, indeed a carton formed of more than a single part blank may incorporate the invention and the handle flap support structure may be formed from a separate piece of material. The handle flap support structure being automatically set-up uρθi> deployment of the handle flap is an optional feature and it is envisaged that the handle flap support structure may be sel-up intemaϋy of the carton ;n a number of ways, for example, during construction of the carton, preferably when the top-end Oep 70a/70b is folded snto position to close the end of the carton 1QO. Alternatively the handle flap support structure QO may take the form of a pee -folded
