Description
- The present invention relates to a back light assembly for a liquid crystal display having a lamp holder and a power supply module.
- Generally, a backlight assembly employed in a liquid crystal display (LCD) device may be classified into either a direct illumination type backlight assembly or an edge illumination type backlight assembly according to the position of the light source. The direct illumination type backlight assembly having a plurality of cold cathode fluorescent lamps typically includes lamp holders to hold the lamps to a bottom plate of a receiving container. When the conventional backlight assembly is assembled, the lamp holders and wires connected to an inverter are soldered, or a plurality of terminals of the lamp holders is soldered to a printed circuit board. This procedure takes much time and the lamps are frequently damaged during the soldering process. Also, when a defective inverter is replaced with a new inverter, the lamps must first be separated from the lamp holders, whereby making repair inefficient.

- One aspect of the present invention is provided by a lamp holder according to claim 1, which includes a holder body and a power connector. A lamp guide groove is formed on an upper portion of the holder body and an inverter insertion groove is formed on a lower portion of the holder body. The power connector includes a first portion exposed to the inverter insertion groove, and a second portion disposed adjacent to the lamp guide groove.
- The first portion of the power connector may include an inverter catching structure having, for example, a hook shape.
- The second portion may include a wire catching portion located near the lamp guide groove and holding a wire of the lamp which is located at the outer end of the lamp. The lamp holder may further include a holder cap inserted to the first recess in a third direction from the lamp guide groove to the inverter insertion groove. The first portion of the power connector may include a power input portion receiving a power source externally provided, and the second portion of the power connector may include a power output portion applying the power source to an electrode portion of the lamp.
- Another aspect of the present invention is provided by a power supply module according to claim 8, which includes a power supply board and a plurality of lamp holders. A plurality of power output terminals is formed along an edge portion of the power supply board. Each of the lamp holders includes a holder body and a power connector. A lamp guide groove is formed on an upper portion of the holder body and an inverter insertion groove is formed on a lower portion of the holder body. The edge portion of the power supply board is inserted into the inverter insertion groove. The power connector includes a first portion and a second portion. The first portion is exposed to the inverter insertion groove and makes contact with the power output terminal. The second portion is disposed adjacent to the lamp guide groove.
- In an exemplary embodiment, the power supply manifold further includes an insulation plate facing the power supply board and having a fixing groove into which the holder body is inserted. The first portion may include a first connection portion and a second connection portion. The first connection portion makes contact with an upper surface of the power supply board. The second connection portion makes contact with a lower surface of the power supply board. The power output terminal may be formed on one of the upper surface and the lower surface of the power supply board to make contact with one of the first connection portion and the second connection portion.
- Still another aspect of the present invention is provided by a backlight assembly according to
claim 12, which includes a plurality of lamp holders, a receiving container, a plurality of lamps and a power supply board. The receiving container includes a bottom plate and a sidewall. The bottom plate has a plurality of openings into which the lamp holders are inserted. The sidewall is disposed on a peripheral portion of the bottom plate. Each of the lamps includes a lamp tube and an electrode portion. The lamp tube is guided by the lamp guide groove, and the electrode portion extends from an end portion of the lamp tube and makes contact with the second portion. The power supply board is slidably inserted into the inverter insertion groove exposed to a rear surface of the bottom plate. Power output terminals are formed on the power supply board, and makes contact with the first portion. - In an exemplary embodiment, the backlight assembly further includes an insulation plate. The insulation plate is disposed between the bottom plate and the power supply board. A fixing groove, into which the holder body of each of the lamp holders is inserted, is formed on the insulation plate. The backlight assembly may further include a side mold and an optical unit. The side mold covers the lamp holders. The optical unit is disposed over the lamps.
- In an exemplary embodiment, the backlight assembly further includes a lamp reflector and a light guiding plate. The lamp reflector is disposed adjacent to the sidewall to enclose the lamp and reflect light generated from the lamp toward a receiving space defined by the bottom plate and the sidewall. The light guiding plate includes a light-exiting face, a counter face facing the light-exiting face, and a side face connecting the light-exiting face and the counter face. The lamp is disposed adjacent to the side face.
- Still another aspect of the present invention is provided by a display device according to
claim 17, which includes a plurality of lamp holders, an insulation plate, a receiving container, a plurality of lamps, a power supply board, an optical unit and a display panel. The insulation plate has a fixing groove into which the holder body of each of the lamp holders is slidably inserted. The receiving container includes a bottom plate having a plurality of openings into which the lamp holders fastened to the insulation plate are inserted, and a sidewall disposed on a peripheral portion of the bottom plate. Each of the lamps includes a lamp tube guided by the lamp guide groove, and an electrode portion extending from an end portion of the lamp tube and making contact with the second portion. The power supply board is slidably inserted into the inverter insertion groove exposed to a rear surface of the bottom plate. Power output terminals that make contact with the first portion are formed on the power supply board. The optical unit is disposed over the lamps, and the display panel is disposed over the optical unit. - According to the above, soldering between the lamp and the lamp holder and soldering between the lamp holder and the power supply board are omitted to thereby improve assemblability of the backlight assembly and the display device, and the power supply board may be easily reworked.

FIG. 1 is a perspective view illustrating a lamp holder according to an exemplary embodiment of the present invention.FIG. 2 is a perspective view illustrating the power connector illustrated inFIG. 1 . - Referring to
FIGS. 1 and2 , alamp holder 10 fastens alamp 3 that provides a back light for an LCD device and includes a power source forlamp 3. Thelamp holder 10 includes aholder body 11 and apower connector 30. - The
power connector 30 is disposed at a recess formed on thelamp holder 10. - The holder body 1 is advantageously formed by injection molding.
Holder body 11 has, for example, a hexahedron shape. In an exemplary embodiment, theholder body 11 includes anupper face 12, alower face 13 facing theupper face 12, and first, second, third and fourth side faces 14, 15, 16 and 17 connecting theupper face 12 and thelower face 13. Thefirst side face 14 and the second side face 1 5 face each other. Thethird side face 16 and the fourth side face 1 7 face each other and are connected to thefirst side face 14 and thesecond side face 15. - A
lamp guide groove 21 having a predetermined depth is formed on theupper face 12 of theholder body 11 and aninverter insertion groove 23 is formed on a lower portion of theholder body 11. Thelamp guide groove 21 is disposed and extended to a first direction opposite to the recess formed on thelamp holder 10, and theinverter insertion groove 23 is disposed and extended to a second direction opposite to the recess formed on thelamp holder 10. - In an exemplary embodiment, the
lamp guide groove 21 is open to thefirst side face 14. Thelamp guide groove 21 may be rounded to have a shape corresponding to thelamp 3. Theinverter insertion groove 23 is recessed from a lower portion of thefirst side face 14 toward the second side face 1 5 by a predetermined depth, and is open to thethird side face 16 and thefourth side face 17. -
FIG. 3 is an exploded perspective view illustrating the lamp holder illustrated inFIG. 1 .FIG. 4 is a cross-sectional view taken along a line I-I' inFIG. 3 . - Referring to
FIGS. 2 to 4 , theholder body 11 has aconnection hole 25 and acoupling hole 27. Theconnection hole 25 corresponds to the recess formed on thelamp holder 10. Theconnection hole 25 is formed through theupper face 12, and is open to theinverter insertion groove 23. Thecoupling hole 27 is formed through the third and fourth side faces 16 and 17, and is open to theconnection hole 25. - The
power connector 30 is made of a conductive metal and disposed in theconnection hole 25. Thepower connector 30 includes a first terminal portion (hereinafter, referred to as 'power input portion') 31 and a second terminal portion (hereinafter, referred to as 'power output portion') 37, which are electrically connected to each other. - The
inverter insertion groove 23 is recessed to a predetermined depth to expose thepower input portion 31 to theinverter insertion groove 23. Thepower output portion 37 is disposed adjacent to thelamp guide groove 21. Thepower input portion 31 is bent from theconnection hole 25 to the second direction of theinverter insertion groove 23 at a lower portion of thepower input portion 31. Thepower input portion 31 includes afirst connection portion 32 and asecond connection portion 35. Thefirst connection portion 32 is disposed at an upper portion of a receiving space defined by theinverter insertion groove 23, and thesecond connection portion 35 is disposed at a lower portion of the receiving space. - The
power input portion 31 has an inverter catching structure. The inverter catching structure has, for example, a hook shape. - In an exemplary embodiment, the
first connection portion 32 includes twofirst connection terminals 33 having substantially the same shape, and thesecond connection portion 35 includes twosecond connection terminals 36 having substantially the same shape. Alternatively, thefirst connection portion 32 and thesecond connection portion 35 may include more than two terminal portions. - The
first connection portion 32 includes a plurality offirst connection terminals 33 extending from thesecond side face 15 toward thefirst side face 14, and thesecond connection portion 35 includes a plurality ofsecond connection terminals 36 extending from thesecond side face 15 toward thefirst side face 14. For example, an end portion of thefirst connection terminals 33 and an end portion of thesecond connection terminals 36, which are near thefirst side face 14, have a hook shape. -
FIG. 5 is a cross-sectional view taken along a line 11-11' inFIG. 3 . - Referring to
FIGS. 3 to 5 , thepower output portion 37 includes a wire catching portion located near thelamp guide groove 21 and holding a wire of thelamp 3 which is located at the outer end of thelamp 3. In an exemplary embodiment, thepower output portion 37 is disposed at both sides of alead 6 of thelamp 3, the lead being exposed to theconnection hole 25 and disposed over thelamp guide groove 21. Thepower output portion 37 includes afirst power terminal 38 and asecond power terminal 39. Thefirst power terminal 38 extends to an upper portion of theconnection hole 25, and is bent along a first side of thelead 6 toward a lower portion of theconnection hole 25. Thesecond power terminal 39 faces thefirst power terminal 38, and is bent along a second side of thelead 6 toward a lower portion of theconnection hole 25. - The
lamp holder 10 may further include aholder cap 40. Theholder cap 40 is inserted into theconnection hole 25 in a third direction from thelamp guide groove 21 to theinverter insertion groove 23. Theholder cap 40 presses thepower output portion 37 to thereby make contact with thelead 6 of thelamp 3. - The
holder cap 40 includes first and second fixing sections substantially symmetrical to each other. Upper portions of the first and second fixing sections are connected to each other, and lower portions of the first and second fixing section are spaced apart from each other by a predetermined interval. Fixing hooks 43 are formed on the lower portions of the first and second fixing sections. The first fixing section and the second fixing section include first and second inclined faces, respectively, facing each other. - When the first fixing section and the second fixing section are inserted into the
connection hole 25, the fixing hooks 43 are inserted into the corresponding coupling holes 27 formed through theholder body 11. The fixing hooks 43 are coupled to thecoupling hole 27 to upwardly and downwardly slide with the fixing hooks being inserted into thecoupling hole 27. When theholder cap 40 is inserted into theconnection hole 25, the first and second inclined faces press thepower input portion 31 including thefirst power terminal 38 and thesecond power terminal 39. Thus, thefirst power terminal 38 and thesecond power terminal 39 make contact with and surround a portion of thelead 6 of thelamp 3. -
FIG. 6 is a perspective view illustrating a lamp holder according to another exemplary embodiment of the present invention.FIG. 7 is a cross-sectional view taken along a line III-III' inFIG. 6 . - Referring to
FIGS. 6 and7 , alamp holder 210 includes aholder body 211 and apower connector 230. - The
holder body 211 is substantially the same as theholder body 11 illustrated inFIG. 1 except for a shape of alamp guide groove 221 and a shape of aconnection hole 225. Thus, theholder body 211 has a substantially hexahedron shape, and includes anupper face 212, alower face 213 facing theupper face 212, and first, second, third and fourth side faces 214, 215, 216 and 217 connecting theupper face 212 and thelower face 213. - A
lamp guide groove 221 and aninverter insertion groove 223 are formed on theholder body 211. Thelamp guide groove 221 is formed on an upper portion of theholder body 211. Particularly, thelamp guide groove 221 extends from thefirst side face 214 toward thesecond side face 214, and is recessed by a predetermined depth. - The
inverter insertion groove 223 is formed on thefirst side face 214 and positioned under thelamp guide groove 221. Theinverter insertion groove 223 is recessed from a lower portion of thefirst side face 214 toward thesecond side face 214 by a predetermined depth, and open to thethird side face 216 and thefourth side face 217. - A
connection hole 225 may be formed in theholder body 211. Theconnection hole 225 is open to thelamp guide groove 221 and theinverter insertion groove 223. -
FIG. 8 is a cross-sectional view taken along a line IV-IV' inFIG. 6 . - Referring to
FIGS. 6 to 8 , thepower connector 230 is substantially the same as thepower connector 30 illustrated inFIG. 2 except for the shape ofpower output portion 237. Thus, thepower connector 230 is disposed in theconnection hole 225 and includes apower input portion 231 and apower output portion 237. - The
power input portion 231 includes afirst connection portion 232 and asecond connection portion 235. Thepower input portion 231 is substantially the same as thepower input portion 31 illustrated inFIGS. 2 to 5 . Thepower output portion 237 extends from thepower input portion 231, and is exposed to thelamp guide groove 221. Thepower output portion 237 has, for example, a ring shape, a portion of which is open. Thelead 206 of thelamp 203, which is inserted into thelamp guide groove 221, is placed onto thepower output portion 237. -
FIG. 9 is an exploded perspective view illustrating a power supply module according to an exemplary embodiment of the present invention.FIG. 10 is a perspective view illustrating coupling of the lamp holder and the insulation plate illustrated inFIG. 9 .FIG. 11 is a rear perspective view illustrating the power supply module illustrated inFIG. 9 . - Referring to
FIG. 9 , apower supply manifold 400 includes apower supply board 450 and a plurality oflamp holders 410. Thelamp holders 410 are substantially the same as thelamp holder 10 illustrated inFIGS. 1 to 5 . - Thus, the
lamp holder 410 includes aholder body 411 and apower connector 430. Alamp guide groove 421 is formed on an upper portion of theholder body 411, and aninverter insertion groove 423 is formed on a lower portion of theholder body 411. Theholder body 411 includes a connection hole that is formed on the upper face 412 of the holder body 41 1 and is open to theinverter insertion groove 423. Thepower connector 430 includes apower input portion 431 and a power output portion (not shown), and thepower input portion 431 includes a first connection portion (not shown) and asecond connection portion 435. - The first connection portion is disposed at an upper portion of a receiving space defined by the
inverter insertion groove 423, and thesecond connection portion 435 is disposed at the receiving space. The first connection portion includes a plurality of first connection terminals (not shown) extending from a second side face toward a first side face, and thesecond connection portion 435 includes a plurality ofsecond connection terminals 436 extending from the second side face toward the first side face. An end portion of the first connection terminals and an end portion of thesecond connection terminals 436, which are near the first side face, have a hook shape. - Referring to
FIG. 11 , thepower supply board 450 is electrically connected to thepower input portion 431 to apply a power source to thelamp holder 410. Thepower supply board 450 may include a printed circuit board (PCB) and a power supply element mounted on the PCB. A plurality ofpower output terminals 453 is formed along an edge of thepower supply board 450. For example, thepower output terminals 453 include a conductive wiring formed on the PCB, a portion of which may be exposed to a surface of thepower supply board 450. - In an exemplary embodiment, the
power output terminals 453 are formed on an upper surface 412 of thepower supply board 450. Alternatively, thepower output terminals 453 may be formed on a rear surface of thepower supply board 450. Alternatively, thepower output terminals 453 may be formed on the upper surface 412 and the rear surface of thepower supply board 450. - Referring to
FIG. 10 , thepower supply manifold 400 may further include aninsulation plate 460. Theinsulation plate 460 may be fabricated of, for example, a resin having electrically insulating characteristics. Theinsulation plate 460 faces thepower supply board 450, and extends along thepower supply board 450. A plurality of fixinggrooves 463 is formed on theinsulation plate 460 corresponding to thepower output terminals 453. - The fixing
grooves 463 are recessed from an edge corresponding to a long side of theinsulation plate 460 by a predetermined depth, and open to an upper face and a lower face of theinsulation plate 460. Thelamp holders 410 are slidably inserted into and fastened to the fixinggrooves 463. -
FIG. 12 is a perspective view illustrating the power supply module illustrated inFIG. 9 .FIG. 13 is a cross-sectional view taken along a line V-V' inFIG. 12 . - Referring to
FIGS. 12 and13 , thepower supply board 450 is slidably inserted into theinverter insertion grooves 423 of thelamp holders 410 fastened to theinsulation plate 460. The first connection portion of thepower connector 430 makes contact with thepower output terminal 453 formed on thepower supply board 450, and thesecond connection portion 435 of thepower connector 430 makes contact with the rear surface of thepower supply board 450. - Since the first connection portion and the
second connection portion 435 have a hook shape, when thepower supply board 450 is inserted into theinverter insertion groove 423, shock is absorbed into the first connection portion and thesecond connection portion 435 having the hook shape to thereby prevent damage of the first connection portion and thesecond connection portion 435. - An end portion of a
lamp 403 is guided by thelamp guide groove 421, and alead 406 of thelamp 403 is inserted into the power output portion of thepower connector 430. Therefore, thepower supply board 450, the lamp holder 41 0 and thelamp 403 are electrically connected. -
FIG. 14 is an exploded perspective view illustrating a backlight assembly according to an exemplary embodiment of the present invention. - Referring to
FIG. 14 , abacklight assembly 600 includes a plurality oflamp holders 610, a receivingcontainer 670, a plurality oflamps 603 and apower supply board 650. - The
lamp holders 610 are substantially the same as thelamp holders 410 illustrated inFIGS. 9 to 13 . - The receiving
container 670 includes abottom plate 671 and first, second, third andfourth sidewalls second sidewalls fourth sidewalls second sidewalls fourth sidewalls openings 674 is formed through thebottom plate 671 that is near thefirst sidewall 673 and thesecond sidewall 675. - The
lamps 603 are disposed over thebottom plate 671 and substantially in parallel with each other to generate light. Each of thelamps 603 includes a lamp tube and an electrode portion. For example, the lamp tube has a straight tube shape, and includes a discharge gas such as argon (Ar), mercury (Hg), etc. The electrode portion is positioned at an end portion of the lamp tube. - The electrode portion includes a discharge electrode and a lead. The discharge electrode is disposed in the lamp tube, and the lead extends from the discharge electrode to the outside of the lamp tube. The lamp tube is guided by the
lamp guide groove 621. The lead extends from an end portion of the lamp tube and is inserted into thepower output portion 637 of thepower connector 630. The lead makes contact with thepower output portion 637. - The
backlight assembly 600 may further include aninsulation plate 660. Theinsulation plate 660 is substantially the same as theinsulation plate 460 illustrated inFIGS. 9 to 13 . Theinsulation plate 660 is disposed on a rear surface of thebottom plate 671, and thelamp holders 610 inserted into fixing grooves formed on theinsulation plate 660 are inserted intoopenings 674 formed through thebottom plate 671. -
FIG. 1 5 is a cross-sectional view taken along a line VI-Vl' inFIG. 14 . - Referring to
FIGS. 14 and15 , thepower supply board 650 applies a power source to thelamp holders 610. Thepower supply board 650 is substantially the same as thepower supply board 450 illustrated inFIGS. 9 to 13 except for a position ofpower output terminals 653. In an exemplary embodiment, thepower output terminals 653 are formed on a rear surface of thepower supply board 650. - The
power supply board 650 is disposed under theinsulation plate 660. Thepower supply board 650 is slidably inserted intoinverter insertion grooves 623 of thelamp holders 610 fastened to theinsulation plate 660. Asecond connection portion 635 of thepower connector 630 makes contact with thepower output terminal 653 formed on the rear surface of thepower supply board 650, and afirst connection portion 632 makes contact with an upper surface of thepower supply board 650. - The
backlight assembly 600 may further include aprotective cover 685, a reflectingplate 678, aside mold 681 and anoptical unit 690. - The
protective cover 685 covers thepower supply board 650 to externally insulate thepower supply board 650 and shield electromagnetic wave. - The reflecting
plate 678 is disposed on thebottom plate 671 of the receivingcontainer 670 to upwardly reflect the light generated from thelamps 603. - The
side mold 681 is disposed on thebottom plate 671 corresponding to thefirst sidewall 673 and thesecond sidewall 675 to cover thelamp holders 610. A plurality of grooves is formed on an edge of a lower portion of theside mold 681 to prevent interference between thelamps 603. A stepped portion is formed on an upper portion of theside mold 681. - The
optical unit 690 enhances optical characteristics, for example, such as luminance uniformity and front luminance of the light generated from thelamps 603, and the enhanced light is upwardly transmitted. Theoptical unit 690 is supported by thethird sidewall 677, thefourth sidewall 679 and theside mold 681. Theoptical unit 690 includes a light-diffusingplate 691, a light-diffusingsheet 693 and light-condensingsheets 695. The light-diffusingplate 691, the light-diffusingsheet 693 and the light-condensingsheets 695 are successively disposed. - The light-diffusing
plate 691 and the light-diffusingsheet 693 diffuse the light generated from thelamp 603, and the light having enhanced luminance uniformity may exit the light-diffusingplate 691 and the light-diffusingsheet 693. The light-condensingsheets 695 condense the light from the light-diffusingplate 691 in different directions, for example, in substantially perpendicular directions to thereby enhance front luminance of thebacklight assembly 600. -
FIG. 16 is an exploded perspective view illustrating a backlight assembly according to another exemplary embodiment of the present invention. Referring toFIG. 16 , abacklight assembly 800 includes a plurality oflamp holders 810, a receiving container 870, a plurality oflamps 803 and apower supply board 850. - The
lamp holders 810 are substantially the same as thelamp holder 210 illustrated inFIGS. 6 to 8 . The receiving container 870 is substantially the same as the receivingcontainer 670 illustrated inFIGS. 14 and15 except for a shape of a sidewall, and a position and the number ofopenings 874 formed through abottom plate 871. Thus, the receiving container 870 includes first, second, third andfourth sidewalls fourth sidewalls fourth sidewalls FIG. 14 . Theopenings 874 are formed through four peripheral portions of thebottom plate 871 corresponding to the first, second, third andfourth sidewalls - The
lamps 803 are substantially the same as thelamps 603 illustrated inFIGS. 14 and15 . Thebacklight assembly 800 may further include abottom mold frame 860. Thebottom mold frame 860 includes asupport portion 861 and aframe portion 863. Thesupport portion 861 corresponds to thebottom plate 871, and central portion of thesupport portion 861 is open. Theframe portion 863 extends from an edge of thesupport portion 861, and corresponds to the first, second, third andfourth sidewalls opening 864 is formed through a portion of an edge, at which thesupport portion 861 and theframe portion 863 meet each other, to easily couple thelamp holder 810 to thebottom mold frame 860. - The
bottom mold frame 860 may include a resin having electrically insulating characteristics. Thebottom mold frame 860 is received in the receiving container 870. Thelamps 803 are disposed at opposite positions of theframe portion 863 of thebottom mold frame 860. - The
backlight assembly 800 may further include alamp reflector 881, alight guiding plate 891 and anoptical sheet 892. - The
lamp reflector 881 has a substantially C-shaped cross section. Thelamp reflector 881 encloses thelamp 803, and reflects the light generated from thelamps 803 toward a receiving space defined by thebottom mold frame 860. - The
light guiding plate 891 and theoptical sheet 892 guides the light generated from thelamps 803 and upwardly provides the guided light. Theoptical sheet 892 includes a light-reflectingsheet 893, a light-diffusingsheet 895 and two light-condensingsheets 897. The light-reflectingsheet 893, thelight guiding plate 891, the light-diffusingsheet 895 and the light-condensingsheets 897 are successively disposed on or over thesupport portion 861. - The
light guiding plate 891 guides the light that is generated from thelamp 803 and then is incident onto a side face, and upwardly provides the guided light. Thelight guiding plate 891 includes, for example, a polymer resin having good optical transmissivity, heat resistance, chemical resistance, mechanical strength, etc. Examples of the polymer resin include polymethyl methacrylate, polyamide, polyimide, polypropylene, polyurethane, etc. - The light-reflecting
sheet 893 reflects light leaked from a lower surface of thelight guiding plate 891 to provide the lower surface of thelight guiding plate 891 again. The light-diffusingsheet 895 enhances luminance uniformity of light provided from an upper surface of thelight guiding plate 891. The light-condensingsheets 897 enhance front luminance of light provided from the light-diffusingsheet 895. -
FIG. 17 is a rear perspective view illustrating the backlight assembly illustrated inFIG. 16 .FIG. 18 is a cross-sectional view taken along a line VII-VII' inFIG. 16 . - Referring to
FIGS. 16 to 18 , thepower supply board 850 is substantially the same as thepower supply board 650 illustrated inFIGS. 14 and15 except that apower output terminal 853 is formed on an upper surface corresponding to theopenings 874. - The
lamp holder 810 includes aholder body 811 and apower connector 830. As shown inFIG. 6 , theholder body 811 includes an upper face, a lower face and first, second, third and fourth side faces. Theholder body 811 has a lamp guide groove, aninverter insertion groove 823 and aconnection hole 825. Thepower connector 830 includes apower input portion 831 exposed to theinverter insertion groove 823 and apower output portion 837 disposed in the lamp guide groove. - The
lamp holders 810 are coupled to longitudinal end portions of thelamp reflector 881. Thelamp 803 is inserted into the lamp guide groove, and a lead 806 of thelamp 803 is inserted into thepower output portion 837. The upper face and the fourth side face of the holder body 81 1 make contact with thelamp reflector 881. A portion of thelamp reflector 881 corresponding to the lower face of thelamp holder 810 is open. - The
lamp holder 810 fastened to thelamp reflector 881 is inserted into theopening 864 formed through the edge of thebottom mold frame 860 and theopening 874 formed through thebottom plate 871 of the receiving container 870. As shown inFIG. 18 , theinverter insertion groove 823 is exposed to a rear surface of thebottom plate 871. Thepower supply board 850 is slidably inserted into theinverter insertion groove 823. A first connection portion 832 of thepower input portion 831 makes contact with thepower output terminal 853 formed on thepower supply board 850, and asecond connection portion 835 of thepower input portion 831 makes contact with a rear surface of thepower supply board 850. - Display Device
-
FIG. 19 is an exploded perspective view illustrating a display device according to an exemplary embodiment of the present invention.FIG. 20 is a cross-sectional view taken along a line VIII-VIII' inFIG. 19 . - Referring to
FIGS. 19 and20 , adisplay device 1000 includes a plurality oflamp holders 910, aninsulation plate 960, a receivingcontainer 970, a plurality oflamps 903, apower supply board 950, anoptical unit 990 and adisplay panel 1010. - The
lamp holders 910, theinsulation plate 960, the receivingcontainer 970, thelamps 903, thepower supply board 950 and theoptical unit 990 are substantially the same as thelamp holders 610, theinsulation plate 660, the receivingcontainer 670, thelamps 603, thepower supply board 650 and theoptical unit 690 illustrated inFIGS. 14 and15 . - The
display device 1000 may further include aninsulation plate 960, aprotective cover 985, a reflectingplate 978 and aside mold 981. Theinsulation plate 960, theprotective cover 985, the reflectingplate 978 and theside mold 981 are substantially the same as theinsulation plate 660, theprotective cover 685, the reflectingplate 678 and theside mold 681 illustrated inFIGS. 14 and15 . - The
display device 1000 may further include amiddle mold frame 1030. Themiddle mold frame 1030 is coupled to the receivingcontainer 970. Themiddle mold frame 1030 includes a support section and a side cover section. The support section may have a substantially rectangular frame shape, and pushes an edge portion of theoptical unit 990. A stepped portion for placing thedisplay panel 1010 is formed on the support section. The side cover section extends from the support section and is coupled to the first, second, third andfourth sidewalls container 970. - The
display panel 1010 displays an image using light provided from theoptical unit 990. Thedisplay panel 1010 includes afirst substrate 1011, asecond substrate 1013 facing thefirst substrate 1011 and a liquid crystal layer disposed between thefirst substrate 1011 andsecond substrate 1013. - The
display device 1000 may further include a printed circuit board (PCB) 1015 and aconnection film 1017. ThePCB 1015 provides a driving signal to thedisplay panel 1010. A first edge of theconnection film 1017 is electrically connected to an edge of thefirst substrate 1011, and a second edge of theconnection film 1017 is electrically connected to thePCB 1015. - The
display device 1000 may further include atop chassis 1050 exposing an effective display area of thedisplay panel 1010. Thetop chassis 1050 is coupled to at least one of the receivingcontainer 970 and themiddle mold frame 1030. - According to the present invention, a lead of a lamp is attachably and detachably coupled to a power output portion of a lamp holder, and a power supply board is slidably inserted into an inverter insertion groove formed on the lamp holder. Thus, soldering process for electrically connecting the lead, the lamp holder and the power supply board may be omitted, thereby improving assemblability of a backlight assembly having the lamp holder and a display device having the lamp holder.
- In addition, since a defective inverter may be replaced with a new inverter by separating the defective inverter from the inverter insertion groove, a power supply module having the lamp holder and a backlight assembly having the lamp holder may be easily repaired.
- Although exemplary embodiments of the present invention have been described, it is understood that the present invention should not be limited to these exemplary embodiments but various changes and modifications can be made by one ordinary skilled in the art within the scope of the present invention as hereinafter claimed.
Claims (16)
- A lamp holder (10; 210; 410; 610; 810; 910) comprising:a holder body (11; 211; 411; 811) having a lamp guide groove (21; 221; 421; 621) formed on an upper portion of the holder body (11; 211; 411; 811) and extending into a first direction towards a first recess of the lamp holder (10; 210; 410; 610; 810; 910), and an inverter insertion groove (23; 223; 423; 623; 823) formed on a lower portion of the holder body (11; 211; 411; 811) and extending into a second direction towards the first recess; anda power connector (30; 230; 430; 630; 830) disposed in the first recess of the lamp holder (10; 210; 410; 610; 810; 910), wherein the power connector (30; 230; 430; 630; 830) comprises:a first portion (31; 231; 31; 431; 831) exposed to the inverter insertion groove (23; 223; 423; 623; 823) and including a first connection portion (32; 232; 832) disposed at an upper portion of a receiving space defined by the inverter insertion groove (23; 223; 423; 623; 823) and a second connection portion (35; 235; 835) disposed at a lower portion of the receiving space; anda second portion (37; 237; 637; 837) disposed adjacent to the lamp guide groove (21; 221; 421; 621);
characterized in that
the free ends of the first and second connection portions (32; 232; 832; 35; 235; 835) of the first portion (31; 231; 31; 431; 831) of the power connector (30; 230; 430; 630; 830) are bent inwards into the second direction towards the inverter insertion groove (23; 223; 423; 623; 823). - The lamp holder (10; 210; 410; 610; 810; 910) of claim 1, wherein the inverter insertion groove (23; 223; 423; 623; 823) is recessed to a predetermined depth to expose the first portion (31; 231; 31; 431; 831) of the power connector (30; 230; 430; 630; 830).
- The lamp holder (10; 210; 410; 610; 810; 910) of claim 1, wherein the first portion (31; 231; 31; 431; 831) of the power connector (30; 230; 430; 630; 830) comprising an inverter catching structure.
- The lamp holder (10; 210; 410; 610; 810; 910) of clam 3, wherein the inverter catching structure has a hook shape.
- The lamp holder (10; 210; 410; 610; 810; 910) of claim 1, wherein the second portion (37; 237; 637; 837) comprises a wire catching portion located near the lamp guide groove (21; 221; 421; 621) and holding a wire of the lamp (3; 203; 403; 603; 803; 903) which is located at the outer end of the lamp (3; 203; 403; 603; 803; 903).
- The lamp holder (10; 210; 410; 610; 810; 910) of claim 1, further comprising a holder cap (40) inserted to the first recess in a third direction from the lamp guide groove (21; 221; 421; 621) to the inverter insertion groove (23; 223; 423; 623; 823).
- The lamp holder (10; 210; 410; 610; 810; 910) of claim 1, wherein the first portion (31; 231; 31; 431; 831) of the power connector (30; 230; 430; 630; 830) includes a power input portion receiving a power source externally provided, and the second portion (37; 237; 637; 837) of the power connector (30; 230; 430; 630; 830) includes a power output portion applying the power source to an electrode portion of the lamp (3; 203; 403; 603; 803; 903).
- A power supply module comprising:a power supply board (450; 650; 850; 950) having a plurality of power output terminals (453; 653; 853) formed along an edge portion of the power supply board (450; 650; 850; 950); anda plurality of lamp holders (10; 210; 410; 610; 810; 910) according to claim 1.
- The power supply module of claim 8, further comprising an insulation plate (460; 660; 960) facing the power supply board (450; 650; 850; 950) and having a fixing groove (463) into which the holder body (11; 211; 411; 811) is inserted.
- The power supply module of claim 9, wherein the first portion (31; 231; 31; 431; 831) comprises:a first connection portion (32; 232; 632; 832) making contact with an upper surface of the power supply board (450; 650; 850; 950); anda second connection portion (35; 235; 435; 635; 835) making contact with a lower surface of the power supply board (450; 650; 850; 950).
- The power supply module of claim 10, wherein the power output terminal (453; 653; 853) is formed on one of the upper surface and the lower surface of the power supply board (450; 650; 850; 950) to make contact with one of the first connection portion (32; 232; 632; 832) and the second connection portion (35; 235; 435; 635; 835).
- A backlight assembly (600; 800) comprising:a plurality of lamp holders (10; 210; 410; 610; 810; 910) according to claim 1;
a receiving container (670; 870; 970) comprising a bottom plate (671; 871) having a plurality of openings into which the lamp holders (10; 210; 410; 610; 810; 910) are inserted, and a sidewall (673, 675, 677, 679; 873, 875, 877, 879) disposed on a peripheral portion of the bottom plate (671; 871);
a plurality of lamps (3; 203; 403; 603; 803; 903) each comprising a lamp tube guided by the lamp guide groove (21; 221; 421; 621), and an electrode portion extending from an end portion of the lamp tube and making contact with the second portion (37; 237; 637; 837); and
a power supply board (450; 650; 850; 950) slidably inserted into the inverter insertion groove (23; 223; 423; 623; 823) exposed to a rear surface of the bottom plate (671; 871), power output terminals (453; 653; 853) that make contact with the first portion (31; 231; 31; 431; 831) being formed on the power supply board (450; 650; 850; 950). - The backlight assembly (600; 800) of claim 12, further comprising an insulation plate (460; 660; 960) disposed between the bottom plate (671; 871) and the power supply board (450; 650; 850; 950), a fixing groove (463) into which the holder body (11; 211; 411; 811) of each of the lamp holders (10; 210; 410; 610; 810; 910) is inserted being formed on the insulation plate (460; 660; 960).
- The backlight assembly (600; 800) of claim 13, further comprising:a side mold (681; 981) covering the lamp holders (10; 210; 410; 610; 810; 910), a plurality of grooves being formed on the side mold (681; 981) to prevent interference between the lamps (3; 203; 403; 603; 803; 903); andan optical unit (690; 990) disposed over the lamps (3; 203; 403; 603; 803; 903) and supported by the sidewall (673, 675, 677, 679; 873, 875, 877, 879) and the side mold (681; 981).
- The backlight assembly (600; 800) of claim 13, further comprising:a lamp reflector (881) disposed adjacent to the sidewall (673, 675, 677, 679; 873, 875, 877, 879) to enclose the lamp (3; 203; 403; 603; 803; 903) and reflect light generated from the lamp (3; 203; 403; 603; 803; 903) toward a receiving space defined by the bottom plate (671; 871) and the sidewall (673, 675, 677, 679; 873, 875, 877, 879); anda light guiding plate (891) comprising a light-exiting face, a counter face facing the light-exiting face, and a side face connecting the light-exiting face and the counter face, the lamp (3; 203; 403; 603; 803; 903) being disposed adjacent to the side face.
- A display device (1000) comprising:a plurality of lamp holders (10; 210; 410; 610; 810; 910) according to claim 1;an insulation plate (460; 660; 960) having a fixing groove (463) into which the holder body (11; 211; 411; 811) of each of the lamp holders (10; 210; 410; 610; 810; 910) is slidably inserted;a receiving container (670; 870; 970) comprising a bottom plate (671; 871) having a plurality of openings into which the lamp holders (10; 210; 410; 610; 810; 910) fastened to the insulation plate (460; 660; 960) are inserted, and a sidewall (673, 675, 677, 679; 873, 875, 877, 879) disposed on a peripheral portion of the bottom plate (671; 871);a plurality of lamps (3; 203; 403; 603; 803; 903) each comprising a lamp tube guided by the lamp guide groove (21; 221; 421; 621), and an electrode portion extending from an end portion of the lamp tube and making contact with the second portion (37; 237; 637; 837);a power supply board (450; 650; 850; 950) slidably inserted into the inverter insertion groove (23; 223; 423; 623; 823) exposed to a rear surface of the bottom plate (671; 871), power output terminals (453; 653; 853) that make contact with the first portion (31; 231; 31; 431; 831) being formed on the power supply board (450; 650; 850; 950);an optical unit (690; 990) disposed over the lamps (3; 203; 403; 603; 803; 903); anda display panel (1010) disposed over the optical unit (690; 990).
