- the amount of stiffening structures can be selected according to the length and width of the slab such that the slab remains rigid and does not curve.
Abstract
the groove is a dovetail groove (31), and the stiffening structure (3) is of multiple parts and contains
- a wedge-shaped tail part (31), smaller than the groove and corresponding to the groove, which has inclined side walls and a bottom surface and a top surface,
- one or more strip-shaped wedging parts (33, 34, 36) for fitting to the sides of the tail part,
- a counterpart (35), the same length as the tail part, for fitting to the exterior of the slab, and
- tightening parts (37) provided with threads, with which the tail part can be fixed to the counterpart, in a manner allowing tightening, by means of the wedging parts.
Description
- The object of this invention is an arrangement for preventing the curving of a solid wooden slab, such as a solid wooden tabletop.
- A solid wooden slab, which is comprised of one or more layers of wooden boards glued side by side together, or similar, is extremely stout in structure and is suitable for use for many different purposes, e.g. as tabletops or as raw material for the furniture industry.
- A problem in the use of these types of solid wooden slabs is curving of the slab owing to drying of the slab and other reasons. As a consequence of the curving the wooden slab in many cases can no longer used.
- One solution to prevent the curving of a solid wooden slab is to make grooves in the bottom surface of the slab. A solid stiffener piece, e.g. of iron, is fitted into each grove.
- A drawback in this prior-art solution is that the ends of the groove and of the stiffener part generally extend for the entire width of the slab and thus come right up to the edges of the slab, which spoils the outer appearance of the slab and hampers its surface treatment.
- The purpose of this invention is to eliminate the drawbacks of prior art and to achieve a significantly better arrangement than prior-art solutions for preventing the curving of a solid wooden slab, which is simple to install and enables in particular surface treatment of the slab from both above and below before installation of the stiffener structure.
- In the solution according to the invention a transverse dovetail groove of the slab is used, to which is fitted a dovetail of the shape of the groove containing a stiffener structure of multiple parts.
- The stiffening structure itself contains
- a tail part, smaller than the groove and wedge-shaped corresponding to the groove, which has inclined side walls and a bottom surface and a top surface, and which thus can be threaded into the groove,
- one or more strip-shaped wedging parts for fitting to the sides of the tail part,
- a counterpart, the same length as the tail part, for fitting to the exterior of the slab, and
- tightening parts provided with threads, with which the tail part can be fixed to the counterpart, in a manner allowing tightening, by means of the wedging parts.
- With the solution according to the invention a significantly better structure that prevents curving of the slab than prior-art solutions is achieved. In addition the surfacing of the slab can be performed before installation of the stiffening structure, because the groove can be made in the centre of the slab without it coming out at the edges.
- Each groove is thus shorter than the transverse width of the whole slab, in which case also a more beautiful end result in terms of outward appearance is achieved when the grooves do not extend right to the edge of the slab.
- In the following, the invention will be described in more detail by the aid of some embodiments with reference to the attached drawings, wherein
-
Fig. 1 presents a bottom view of a tabletop, in which is a stiffening structure according to the invention, -
Fig. 2 presents a stiffening structure according to the invention as a magnified explosion drawing of point A, -
Fig. 3 presents a cross-section of the stiffening structure ofFigs. 1 and 2 , -
Fig. 4 presents a cross-section of one alternative stiffening structure. -
Fig. 1 presents a rectangular solidwooden tabletop 1, in the corners of both ends of which aredepressions 2 with screw holes for the table legs and beside them two transversestiffening structures 3 according to the invention, of which one is presented installed into position and the other as an explosion drawing and also magnified inFig. 2 . - In the solution according to the invention a
transverse dovetail groove 31 that is slightly shorter than the width of the slab of the table is used, which is machined in the bottom surface of the slab according toFig. 2 such that the groove widens as it goes into the slab from the bottom surface of the slab. The groove is made e.g. by turning, such that the groove is made in the center of the slab so that it does not extend to the edges of the slab. - The stiffening structure according to the invention contains:
- a wedge-shaped solid wooden tail part (tightening piece) 32, smaller than the groove and corresponding to the groove, which has inclined side walls and a bottom surface and a top surface that are even, and which thus can be threaded into the groove,
- strip-shaped plywood wedging parts (filler parts) 33, 34 are fitted to both sides of the dovetail part,
- a solid wooden counterpart (support piece/stiffening piece) 35, the same length as the tail part, for fitting to the exterior of the slab, and
- tightening
screws 37, e.g. six units, which are screwed into theholes 38, 39 in thecounterpart 35 and in thetail part 32, with which the tail part can be fixed to the counterpart, in a manner allowing tightening, by means of the wedging parts. - It is obvious to the person skilled in the art that the different embodiments of the invention are not limited solely to the embodiment described above, but that they may be varied within the scope of the claims presented below. The material of the stiffening structure can be selected relatively freely and is not restricted to the solid wood and plywood of what is presented above. The amount of wedging parts can also be that desired, such as e.g.
Fig. 4 , in which there is only one, part 36. In addition, the amount of stiffening structures can be selected according to the length and width of the slab such that the slab remains rigid and does not curve.
