Definitions

  • This invention relates to a new type of footwear which allows easy foot entry/exit and simple fastening by self-enclosing around the foot.
  • the present invention proposes a range of footwear that has two states: a first state that allows easy foot entry and exit and a second state whereby the foot is fastened into the piece of footwear and the transition between the two states may be achieved without the use of hands.
  • the open-close mechanism may be achieved by the use of bistable materials, springs, hinges, living hinges, elasticised materials, gears, multistable materials, bimetallic materials, electronics, motors, muscle wire, hydraulics, pneumatics, inflation, shape memory materials,
  • the closed state may be activated by the presence of the foot and does not necessarily require the user to use their hands.
  • the open state may be activated by the use of the other foot.
  • the size of the aperture for foot entry may be altered by the design of the shoe upper.
  • the strength of the fastening may be altered for different purposes.
  • the resistance of the sole to bending back on itself may be varied by the addition of a lock-out mechanism.
  • Figure 5 shows the components of the sole.
  • Figure 6 shows the components of the bistable unit.
  • the bistable strip (5) is rigidly attached to the sole board (6a and 6b) by four rivets (4a, 4b, 4c and 4d) in this embodiment (but could alternatively be attached in any strong and permanent manner).
  • the ends of the bistable unit (8a and 8b) are attached such that they are held straight in their rigid state to ensure the sole unit can easily return to its rigid state. If the ends are not held straight they will curl and the sole will remain in its open and arched state.
  • the semi-flexible non-woven sole board (3) provides a continuous surface for the other components to be bonded to.
  • the lock-out mechanism (1) prevents the sole from flexing back on itself which is necessary to provide the required support to the arch of the foot.
  • a layer of flexible fabric (2) may be bonded permanently to an element of the lock-out mechanism (1), as detailed further below.
  • the lock-out mechanism ( figure 7 ) has complete freedom to rotate below the plane of the sole ( figure 8 ) and no freedom to rotate above the plane of the sole ( figure 9 ).
  • the lock-out mechanism may consist of a non-compressible material that follows the shape of the last for the particular piece of footwear and has been split into block sections with parallel surfaces (9a and 9b). The parallel surfaces (9a and 9b) ensure that the blocks butt against each other completely. Because the block sections of the lock-out mechanism cannot be compressed, movement above the plane of the sole is prevented.
  • the block sections are defined by parallel cuts that form parallel surfaces.
  • the parallel cuts run laterally across the non-compressible material of the lock-out mechanism, from one edge of the material to the other.
  • the block sections abut along the length of the parallel surfaces when the bistable unit of the item of footwear is in the 'closed' position of figure 4 .
  • the block sections are fanned out creating a space between the parallel surfaces of each neighbouring block section ( figure 8 ).
  • the space between the block sections when the bistable unit is in the 'open' position, and the block sections are fanned out, is preferably between 0.5 and 2mm.
  • the parallel cuts run at an angle diagonal to the longitudinal axis of the sole, rather than perpendicular to the longitudinal axis (14) of the sole ( figure 10 ).
  • the diagonal parallel cuts (9) can run either forwards towards the inner edge (15) of the sole (as shown), or run forwards towards the outer edge (16) of the sole.
  • the diagonal direction of the block sections gives better protection from any unwanted opening of the footwear during use. If the parallel cuts run perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the sole, then unwanted opening could occur, for example, when walking up stairs, if the edge of the step contacts the footwear between the front section and the heel of the sole and the edge is in line with the parallel cuts, or if the wearer treads on a hard, sharp object when walking. Objects, e.g. edges, that are prone to open the footwear are more likely to extend perpendicular to the axis of the sole than diagonally to the axis and so the footwear is less likely to open with the diagonal cuts than with the perpendicular cuts. Also, the pressure of the user's weight on the sole of the footwear leads to the shoe opening less easily if the cuts are in a diagonal rather than in a perpendicular direction to the longitudinal axis of the sole.
  • the elements of the lock-out mechanism must not be able to slip relative to each other along the longitudinal axis of the sole. This may be achieved by the use of a layer of flexible fabric (2) bonded permanently, for example by adhesive(10) to the lower surface (11) that has little or no ability to extend along the longitudinal axis of the sole.
  • the flat lower surface (11) allows the bistable unit to return to its straight and rigid state.
  • the sole unit comprises the components described above, and is integrated into an upper that can suitably enclose the foot.
