Description
- The present invention relates to a heat exchanger, in particular an intercooler for motor vehicles.
- More precisely, the invention relates to a heat exchanger comprising: a plurality of pipes parallel to one another, a metal bottom plate formed by a metal plate of constant thickness sheared and bent and having a plurality of collars inserted in which are the ends of respective pipes; a manifold tank made of plastic material and fixed by clinching to the bottom plate; and an annular gasket of a substantially rectangular shape, which surrounds the aforesaid collars and is compressed between a seat of the bottom plate and a rim of the manifold tank, wherein the distance between the outer surface of the pipes and the gasket is equal to the thickness of the walls (20b) of said collars (20).
- A heat exchanger of the above-mentioned type is disclosed by
FR-A-2882428 - The purpose of the present invention is to provide a heat exchanger of this type that, given that all the other characteristics are the same, will be more compact than heat exchangers of a known type.
- According to the present invention; the above purpose is achieved by a heat exchanger having the characteristics forming the subject of claim 1.
- The present invention will now be described in detail with reference to the attached drawings, provided purely by way of non-limiting example, in which:
-
Figure 1 is a partial perspective view of a heat exchanger according to the present invention; -
Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view according to the line II-II ofFigure 1 ; -
Figure 3 is an enlarged detail of the part indicated by the arrow III inFigure 2 ; -
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the bottom plate of a heat exchanger according to the present invention; -
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the gasket of a heat exchanger according to the present invention; -
Figure 6 is a perspective view illustrating the gasket mounted in the bottom plate; -
Figure 7 is a cross-sectional view corresponding to that ofFigure 2 of a heat exchanger according to the prior art; and -
Figure 8 is an enlarged cross-sectional view of the part indicated by the arrow VIII inFigure 7 . - With reference to
Figure 1 , designated by 10 is a heat exchanger for motor vehicles according to the present invention. Theheat exchanger 10 illustrated in the figures is an intercooler designed to cool a flow of air upstream of the intake manifold of the vehicle. - The
heat exchanger 10 comprises a plurality ofpipes 12 with an oblong cross section arranged with their respective longitudinal axes parallel to one another. - The ends of the
pipes 12 are fixed to twobottom plates 14, only one of which is visible inFigure 1 . Amanifold tank 16 made of injection-moulded plastic material is fixed by clinching to eachbottom plate 14. - With reference to
Figure 4 , eachbottom plate 14 of theheat exchanger 10 is obtained by shearing and bending starting from a metal plate of constant thickness T. Thebottom plate 14 has an array ofholes 18, which are designed to receive the respective ends of thepipes 12. Theholes 18 are provided withrespective collars 20 formed by bent-up edges of theopenings 18. Theopenings 18 have a flattened rectangular shape, and eachcollar 20 has twolarger walls 20a and twosmaller walls 20b set substantially according to the faces of a parallelepiped. - The
bottom plate 14 has aplane base surface 22 that surrounds thecollars 20. The base surface comprises first parts ofsurface 22a comprised between two adjacentlarger walls 20a of thecollars 20 and second parts ofsurface 22b comprised between thesmaller walls 20b of thecollars 20 and anouter edge 24 bent in a direction orthogonal to thebase surface 22. Thebase surface 22 further comprises two parts ofsurface 22c comprised between thelarger walls 20a of the twocollars 20 arranged at the ends of the array and theouter edge 24. - The
outer edge 24 has twolarger walls 24a, which delimit the parts ofsurface 22b and face thesmaller sides 20b of thecollars 20. Theouter edge 24 has twosmaller sides 24b, which delimit the parts ofsurface 22c and face the outerlarger sides 20a of thecollars 20 located at the ends of the array. Theouter edge 24 is provided with a plurality ofteeth 26, which are to be bent to provide the connection by clinching between thebottom plate 14 and themanifold tank 16. - The
walls collars 20, theouter edge 24, and thebase wall 22 of thebottom plate 14 all have the same thickness T, since thebottom plate 14 is obtained starting from a plane plate of constant thickness T by operations of shearing and bending. - With reference to
Figures 5 and6 , mounted in thebottom plate 14 is a gasket made ofelastomeric material 28. With reference toFigure 5 , thegasket 28 has a substantially rectangular annular shape, with twolarger sides 30 and twosmaller sides 32. Preferably, thelarger sides 30 of thegasket 38 are provided with a plurality ofprotuberances 34 on their inner side. -
Figure 6 shows thegasket 28 housed in thebottom plate 14. The seat that receives thegasket 28 is formed by theparts plane base surface 22. Thelarger sides 30 of thegasket 28 are housed in the parts ofsurface 22b, and thesmaller sides 32 of thegasket 28 are housed in the parts ofsurface 22c. Theprotuberances 34 of thegasket 28 are arranged in the areas of connection between the stretches ofsurface -
Figures 2 and 3 are cross-sectional views themanifold tank 16 mounted and fixed to thebottom plate 14. As may be noted, themanifold tank 16 has arim 36, which rests on thegasket 28. Theteeth 26 of thebottom plate 14 are bent againstrespective surfaces 38 provided on the outer side of themanifold tank 16. Bending of theteeth 26 against theseats 38 provides a clinched connection between themanifold tank 16 and thebottom plate 14. - Once again with reference to
Figures 2 and 3 , it may be noted that the distance between the outer wall of thepipes 12 and thegasket 28 is equal to the thickness T of thesmaller wall 20b of thecollars 20. - This arrangement enables overall dimensions to be obtained that are decidedly more contained than those of known solutions.
- In order to render more evident the saving in overall dimensions that is obtained with the solution according to the present invention, represented in
Figures 7 and 8 is the solution according to the known art used by the present applicant prior to the present invention. In these figures, the details corresponding to the ones previously described are designated by the same reference numbers. - In the solution according to the known art, the
gasket 28 is housed in a seat with a U-shaped cross section displaced laterally outwards with respect to thewalls 20b of the collars in which thepipes 12 are inserted. In the traditional arrangement, the collars and the seat for the gasket are two structurally distinct and separate elements. Instead, in the solution according to the present invention, the seat for containment of thegasket 18 is defined between thewalls collars 20 and theouter edge 24 of thebottom plate 14. The walls of the collars constitute also the walls for containment of the gasket. - The above characteristic enables a considerable saving on the overall dimensions of the heat exchanger to be obtained, maintaining the level of performance altogether unvaried.
