- the fabrication steps according to the method are slightly different from those described above.
- the first step comprises only deep-drawing the conical shape of diffuser body.
- the second step comprises cutting the air flow opening (also including cutting the shape of the projecting strips or tabs, i.e., leaving these areas uncut). Only subsequent to these steps is the outer periphery trimmed by cutting it into a circular shape, whereupon when necessary, are bent the tips of the projecting strips that serve as tips of the finished tabs.
- the last step comprises bending the projecting strip tips into mounting tabs.
Description
- The present invention relates to a method for forming mounting tabs on the outer side of an air diffuser body part, the mounting tabs serving to fix the diffuser body in an air duct, whereby the method employed herein comprises manufacturing the diffuser body from a substantially virgin sheet metal by a deep-drawing technique into its final blank shape, whereupon the bottom portion of the body part blank is cut away in order to make an air flow opening in the diffuser body.
- In this context, an air diffuser may as well began inlet air diffuser or an outlet air diffuser, such as those typically used in the interior ventilation of, e.g., buildings. Strictly adhering to definition, an inlet air diffuser releases air into a room, while an outlet air diffuser sucks away room air. Generally, this kind of air diffuser is located on a room wall or ceiling as a terminating element of an air duct. The diffuser comprises a body part mountable onto the end of the air duct and a cover plate typically adapted adjustably to the diffuser body part.
- The present invention is particularly related to a method of fastening to an air duct the body part of an air diffuser having a construction of the kind described above. More specifically, the invention relates to such a fastening technique that has two or more mounting tabs at the side of the diffuser body part, whereby the tabs serve to affix the diffuser body in place as the diffuser body is rotatably mounted by making the tabs slide along grooves spiraling on the interior wall of the air duct. In the prior art the mounting tabs have been fabricated as separate elements that can be adhered to the diffuser body by welding, for instance. This technique is hampered by extra work steps. They include, i.a., a first step of mounting tab fabrication and a subsequent step of affixing them in place.
-
GB 499691 A - It is an object of the present invention to provide a method for forming the mounting tabs on the air diffuser body in a novel fashion. The method according to the invention is characterized in that the cut-out portion removed from the bottom portion leaves in the diffuser body part two or more strips that are subsequently bent over the edge of the diffuser body part so as to form mounting tabs.
- A preferred embodiment of the invention is characterized in that the number of the mounting tabs is two and they are situated at substantially opposite sides in relationship to each other.
- The benefits of the invention are appreciated in the remarkable material savings and cut-down of production times inasmuch as the fabrication of one element and joining of separate elements can be avoided.
- In the following, the invention is described in more detail with the help of a preferred exemplifying embodiment by making reference to the appended drawings in which
-
FIG. 1a shows a sheet metal blank used for fabricating an air diffuser body part by deep-drawing; -
FIGS. 1b and 1c show a deep-drawn air diffuser body part viewed from two different directions; -
FIGS. 2a, 2b and 2c show a deep-drawn and cut-open air diffuser body part viewed from different directions; and -
FIGS. 3a and 3b show an air diffuser body viewed from two different directions after the mounting tabs are bent into their final shape. - Now referring to
FIG. 1a , therein is shown a sheet metal blank cut into a circular shape, wherefrom abody part 1 of the air diffuser can be fabricated. It is equally feasible and even frequently cost-efficient to select the sheet metal blank have a square or polygonal shape, e.g., an octagon. Machining takes place by deep-drawing the blank into the desired shape (FIG. 1b ). The diffuser body part comprises a front flange 1' and aduct portion 1". In the manufacturing step shown inFIG. 1b , the duct portion is still intact.FIG. 1c illustrates the same object asFIG. 1b , but now viewed from the direction of theduct portion 1". After having thediffuser body 1 mounted in place on a room wall or ceiling as a termination element of an air duct, the front flange 1' ofdiffuser body 1 sits flush with the wall or ceiling surface, while theduct portion 1" is shaped so that it will fit into the interior of the air duct. In this manufacturing stage the diffuser body part does not yet have the air flow opening, which still is covered by a so-calledbottom portion 1"' in the center of theduct portion 1". - In
FIGS. 2a, 2b and 2c is shown a work step wherein thebottom portion 1"' of theduct portion 1" ofdiffuser body 1 is cut off in order to make an air flow opening 3 into the diffuser body blank. During the cutting phase, twoprojecting strips 2 are left in a slightly inward bent position. In the next step (FIGS. 3a and 3b ) the strips are bent into an outward projecting shape over the outer edge of the duct portion so as to make the strips meet the outer side of theduct portion 1". In this fashion the projecting strips become mounting tabs of the diffuser body and can be used for fastening the diffuser body onto inner threads or grooves of the air duct tube. Mounting the air diffuser takes place by a rotating movement. Respectively, the diffuser body can be dismounted from the air duct by rotating the diffuser body in the opposite direction. - In the embodiment illustrated in the diagrams, the number of
mounting tabs 2 is two and they are situated in a diametrically opposed position. While there is no rule as to the number ofmounting tabs 2, it has been found in practice that one tab is not sufficient to keep the diffuser body sufficiently tightly in the air duct. Two tabs are employed most generally. - The ends of the
mounting tabs 2 have a distal tip 2' projecting outward from the rest of the tab thus serving as the actual fastener of the diffuser body. This outward projecting distal tip 2' mates with inner threads or grooves of an air duct tube. - To a person versed in the art it is obvious that the invention is not limited to the above-described exemplifying embodiments, but rather may be varied without departing from the scope of the appended claims. Hence, the invention may be applied to the body part constructions of varying air diffusers, most typically in inlet or outlet air diffusers. The drawings are drafted with the assumption that the sheet metal blank is initially made circular In practice, the blank most frequently has, e.g., a polygonal shape such as that of an octagon. Then, the fabrication steps according to the method are slightly different from those described above. For instance, the first step comprises only deep-drawing the conical shape of diffuser body. The second step comprises cutting the air flow opening (also including cutting the shape of the projecting strips or tabs, i.e., leaving these areas uncut). Only subsequent to these steps is the outer periphery trimmed by cutting it into a circular shape, whereupon when necessary, are bent the tips of the projecting strips that serve as tips of the finished tabs. The last step comprises bending the projecting strip tips into mounting tabs.
