Therefore, in practice, it is noticed that one iteration per bit is sufficient, i. e., the channel estimate from the previous window is a very good initialization for both the simple gradient descent with constant step size and the steepest descent algorithm to estimate the new channel estimate. If the elements that were truly zero were dropped by this procedure, the error in estimation of the zero elements would be made zero and the total squared error in the estimate will be lower. Once the LK significant elements are chosen, the error in these LK elements may be improved by repeating the estimation schemes with a new reduced model of the discrete received signal.
