- a perimetrical slot 6 is formed on the lateral surface of piston 4 and a pin 7 is engaged in slot 6 and is slidable circumferentially along it.
- Pin 7 extends eccentrically from an inner end of a shaft 8 pivotally housed in a seat 9 extending perpendicularly to piston 4 and radially from an edge 1a of heel 1. In this way the outer end of shaft 8 is accessible to the user to angularly displace shaft 8 around its longitudinal axis.
- a portion 8a of reduced diameter is formed at an intermediate point thereof and a pin 10 is forcibly engaged therewith perpendicularly to the surface of the heel.
- the outer end of shaft 8 is provided with a manually operable diametrical rib 11 through which the shaft can be rotated angularly in either direction by 180°.
- the rotation of shaft 8 causes pin 7 to move according to a circular trajectory coaxial to the longitudinal axis of shaft 8 and, consequently, piston 4 to move in the seat 6 in the axial direction thereof.

- the movement of piston 4 in a first axial direction causes the toothed projections 12 to protrude from the bottom surface of the heel to provide a grasping action on a slippery ground, while the movement of piston 4 in a second, opposite axial direction causes the toothed projections 12 to retract within groove 2 to avoid any unnecessary hindrance to the user movements.
- the end-stroke positions of pin 7 lie on an axial plane with respect to piston 4, whereby an axial force acting perpendicularly on pin 7 when the toothed projections 12 are in their protruded position does not cause a rotation of shaft 8 that would result in an unwanted retraction of the toothed projections.
- An O-ring 13 is placed in a circumferential groove 14 formed on the shaft 8 to ensure a proper sealing.
- the arc-shaped form of toothed bar 3 has proven to be the most effective for the heel portion of a shoe sole because the user weight is better distributed evenly on the heel's surface and help walking with less effort. Thanks to the arc-shaped form, back swing problems occurring when grasp points are placed on a straight line perpendicular to the sole longitudinal axis are prevented.

- Toothed bar 3' is slidably arranged in a linear groove 2' as shown in figures 5 to 8. More than one toothed bar 3' and 3" , placed in corresponding linear grooves 2' and 2", can be also provided as shown in figures 9 to 11.
- the single or double toothed bar 3' and 3" are moved in a direction perpendicular to the sole surface by piston 4, to which they are integral, and piston 4 is moved axially by rotation of shaft 4 exactly in the same way as described above for the arc-shaped toothed bar.
- a shoe sole is preferably provided with both types of retractable toothed bar, i.e. the arc-shaped toothed bar in the heel portion and at least one linear toothed bar in the front portion of the sole.
- the means for moving piston 4 axially i.e. shaft 8 with eccentric pin 7 and actuating rib or notch 11, can be arranged in any radial position with respect to piston 4 as shown in dotted lines in figures 1, 5 and 8 according to functional and design needs.
