Abstract
Description
- The invention relates to an exhaust gas recycling device, more particularly to an exhaust gas recycling device for a motorcycle engine.
- As environmental protection becomes an increasing concern, air pollution generated by vehicle exhausts is receiving much attention as a critical area requiring solutions.
- Referring to Figure 1, which is a schematic diagram of a conventional exhaust gas recycling device used in a car, the exhaust
gas recycling device 1 is adapted for connection with acar engine 2 that includes anair intake pipe 22 and anexhaust gas pipe 21. The exhaustgas recycling device 1 includes an exhaustgas recycling valve 11 configured as an electromagnetic valve and mounted on the car body, an electronic control unit (ECU) 12 for controlling opening and closing operations of the exhaustgas recycling valve 11, a first air-guidingpipe 13 in fluid communication with theexhaust gas pipe 21, and a second air-guidingpipe 14 in fluid communication with theair intake pipe 22. When theelectronic control unit 12 opens the exhaustgas recycling valve 11, the first air-guidingpipe 13 is in fluid communication with the second air-guidingpipe 14. This allows exhaust gas to flow from theexhaust gas pipe 21 into theair intake pipe 22 via a flow path formed by the first air-guidingpipe 13, the exhaustgas recycling valve 11 and the second air-guidingpipe 14. The exhaust gas mixes with fresh air in theintake pipe 22 for subsequent flow into thecar engine 2. - When the
electronic control unit 12 closes the exhaustgas recycling valve 11, the first air-guidingpipe 13 is not in fluid communication with the second air-guidingpipe 14. As such, flow of exhaust gas from theexhaust gas pipe 21 into theair intake pipe 22 via the flow path of the first air-guidingpipe 13, the exhaustgas recycling valve 11 and the second air-guidingpipe 14 is prevented. - As described above, a portion of the exhaust gas exhausted from the
car engine 2 flows back into theair intake pipe 22 to mix with fresh air. Since this portion of exhaust gas includes a large quantity of carbon dioxide (CO2), which will not oxidize and which can absorb a lot of heat so as to reduce oxygen density in thecar engine 2. The maximum combustion temperature of thecar engine 2 is lowered to thereby reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx) in the exhaust gas. - Nevertheless, since an assembly of the first and second air-guiding
pipes car engine 2 is high, when the exhaust gas is guided to flow through the first and second air-guidingpipes pipes car engine 2, which adversely affects engine ignition. - Moreover, due to the high temperature of the exhaust gas of the
exhaust gas pipe 21, the exhaustgas recycling valve 11 is susceptible to damage. If extreme damage occurs, the exhaustgas recycling valve 11 may entirely malfunction, in which case exhaust gas recycling is not possible. - In developing countries, exhaust gas discharged from motorcycles is one of the primary sources of air pollution, and therefore requires urgent attention.
- The aforesaid excessively long piping problem needs to be resolved in order to make the conventional exhaust gas recycling device applicable to a motorcycle engine. In addition, the manner in which the exhaust
gas recycling device 1 may be mounted within the very limited space in a motorcycle is another issue that needs to be addressed. - Therefore, the obj ect of this invention is to provide an exhaust gas recycling device that can overcome the drawbacks associated with the prior art.

- Before the present invention is described in greater detail with reference to the accompanying preferred embodiments, it should be noted herein that like elements are denoted by the same reference numerals throughout the disclosure.
- Referring to Figures 2, 3 and 4, a first preferred embodiment of an exhaust
gas recycling device 6 according to the present invention is shown to be adapted for anengine 3 of amotorcycle 5. Theengine 3 includes anair intake system 31 for taking in fresh air, anexhaust gas system 32 for venting exhaust gas from theengine 3, and acylinder head 33 interconnecting theair intake system 31 and theexhaust gas system 32. Theair intake system 31 includes anair intake pipe 311 and aninlet channel 312 that is formed in thecylinder head 33 and that is in fluid communication with theintake pipe 311. Theexhaust gas system 32 includes anexhaust pipe 321 and anoutlet channel 322 that is formed in thecylinder head 33 and that is in fluid communication with theexhaust pipe 321. Thecylinder head 33 interconnects acylinder 331 and acylinder head cover 332. - The exhaust
gas recycling device 6 includes an exhaust gas outlet 321' (see Figure 3) formed in theexhaust pipe 321 of theexhaust gas system 32, a normally closed exhaust gas recycling valve 61 (see Figure 4) mounted on theair intake system 31, and an air-guidingpipe 62. Theexhaust pipe 321 is in fluid communication with the air-guidingpipe 62 through the exhaust gas outlet 321' , as shown in Figure 3. The exhaust gas outlet 321' in theexhaust pipe 321 can be replaced with an exhaust gas outlet 322' (see Fig. 5) in theoutlet channel 322 such that the exhaust gas outlet 322' is in fluid communication with the air-guidingpipe 62. - Referring to Figure 2, the
motorcycle 5 includes afuel tank 51 and ahandle 53. Theengine 3 is disposed under thefuel tank 51, as is the exhaustgas recycling valve 61. The air-guidingpipe 62 is disposed between theair intake system 31 and theexhaust gas system 32. The air-guidingpipe 62 is disposed in proximity to theengine 3. In this embodiment, the air-guidingpipe 62 extends around thecylinder head 33 of theengine 3. Alternatively, the air-guidingpipe 62 may extend around thecylinder 331 or thecylinder head cover 332. - Again referring to Figures 2, 3 and 4, the exhaust
gas recycling valve 61 is mounted on theair intake system 31, as described above, and has agas inlet 611 and agas outlet 612. Thegas outlet 612 is in fluid communication with theintake pipe 311, as shown in Fig. 4. Alternatively, thegas outlet 612 is in fluid communication with theinlet channel 312. The exhaustgas recycling valve 61 is connected operatively to an accelerator cable 9 (see Fig. 4). Amovable member 64 is disposed in the exhaustgas recycling valve 61, and is biased by aspring 7 to close thegas outlet 612. The accelerator cable 9 can be operated against the biasing action of thespring 7 so as to remove themovable member 64 from thegas outlet 612, thereby allowing for flow of gas through thegas outlet 612 and into theexhaust gas valve 61. When the user operates a throttle (not shown) on thehandle 53 to accelerate themotorcycle 5, the exhaustgas recycling valve 61 is opened so as to allow for gas flow between thegas inlet 611 and thegas outlet 612. Hence, the exhaust gas flows from theexhaust pipe 321 into theintake pipe 311 through the exhaustgas recycling valve 61 and the air-guidingpipe 62. This causes the exhaust gas to mix with fresh air within theintake pipe 311, and subsequently flows back into theengine 3. - When the throttle of the
handle 53 is released, the accelerator cable 9 no longer applies a pulling force to themovable member 64. Thus, thespring 7 biases themovable member 64 to close thegas outlet 612 so as to stop flow of the exhaust gas from theexhaust pipe 321 into theintake pipe 311 through the exhaustgas recycling valve 61 and the air-guidingpipe 62. - As described above, a portion of the exhaust gas exhausted from the
car engine 3 flows back into theair intake pipe 311 to mix with fresh air. Since this portion of exhaust gas includes a large quantity of carbon dioxide (CO2), which will not oxidize and which can absorb a lot of heat so as to reduce oxygen density in thecar engine 3, the maximum combustion temperature of thecar engine 3 is lowered to thereby reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx) in the exhaust gas. - Furthermore, since the exhaust
gas recycling valve 61 is disposed on theair intake pipe 311, and since the air-guidingpipe 62 is disposed in proximity to theengine 3 and is directly connected to theexhaust pipe 321, the piping of the entire exhaustgas recycling device 6 is effectively shortened. The drawbacks associated with the prior art configurations resulting from excessively long piping, such as a slow return flow rate of exhaust gas, uneven density of exhaust gas fed back into theengine 3, and difficult engine ignition, etc., are therefore overcome. - Referring to Figures 3, 4 and 6, a second preferred embodiment of an exhaust
gas recycling device 6 according to the present invention is adapted for an all-terrain vehicle 5, which has afuel tank 51 and ahandle 53. Theengine 3 is disposed under thefuel tank 51, and includes anair intake system 31 and anexhaust gas system 32. The exhaustgas recycling device 6 includes an exhaust gas outlet 321' formed in theintake pipe 321, an exhaustgas recycling valve 61 mounted on theair intake system 31, and an air-guidingpipe 62. The exhaust gas outlet 321' in theintake pipe 321 can be replaced with the exhaust gas outlet 322' (see Fig. 5) in theoutlet channel 322 such that the exhaust gas outlet 322' is in fluid communication with the air-guidingpipe 62. - Unlike the first preferred embodiment, the exhaust
gas recycling valve 61 and the air-guidingpipe 62 are disposed under thetank 51 and between thefuel tank 51 and theexhaust gas system 32, theexhaust pipe 321 extends around theengine 3, and the air-guidingpipe 62 is disposed in proximity to theengine 3. - Referring to Figures 3, 4 and 7, a third preferred embodiment of an exhaust gas recycling device according to the present invention is adapted for a
scooter 5, which has aseat 52 and ahandle 53. Theengine 3 is disposed under theseat 52. The exhaust gas outlet 321' in theintake pipe 321 can be replaced with the exhaust gas outlet 322' (see Fig. 5) in theoutlet channel 322 such that the exhaust gas outlet 322' is in fluid communication with the air-guidingpipe 62. - Unlike the first preferred embodiment, the exhaust
gas recycling valve 61 is disposed under theseat 52 and between theseat 52 and theexhaust pipe 321, and the air-guidingpipe 62 extends around thecylinder head cover 332 of theengine 3. Alternatively, the air-guidingpipe 62 may extend around thecylinder 331 or thecylinder head 33 of theengine 3. - From the foregoing, the exhaust
gas recycling device 6 of this invention has the following advantages: - 1) quick reaction time:
The exhaustgas recycling device 6 is disposed under thefuel tank 51 or theseat 52, and has only one air-guidingpipe 62 disposed in proximity to theengine 3 or between theair intake system 31 and theexhaust gas system 32. Therefore, the piping in the exhaustgas recycling device 6 is shortened so as to allow for quick return flow of the exhaust gas from theexhaust gas system 32 into theair intake system 31. The problem of water and carbon accumulation inside the air-guidingpipe 62 with the prior art is therefore eliminated. - 2) effective space allocation:
This is especially important because the exhaustgas recycling device 6 can be arranged within a very limited space in themotorcycle 5. - 3) stable operations:
The exhaustgas recycling valve 61 is controlled mechanically by the accelerator cable 9, and therefore is not affected by the high temperature of exhaust gas. As a result, the exhaustgas recycling device 6 has a long service life.
