Abstract
Description
- The present invention relates to a profiling adjustable bed furniture item, comprising a mattress base that can be supported on a substrate and a mattress which extend between a head end and a foot end, which mattress base has a supporting surface and which mattress has a bottom surface that is supported on the supporting surface of the mattress base, and which mattress base and mattress together defme an upper side and an underside, wherein the thickness between the upper side and the underside of the mattress and the mattress base, viewed in the direction between the head end and the foot end, varies.
- A profiling adjustable bed furniture item of this type is disclosed in EP-A 168 190. The thickness and firmness of both the mattress and the mattress base are chosen such that a particular desired support is obtained. In this context it is of importance that the human body is relatively heavy in the trunk region, while the upper body with the head as well as the legs and feet are relatively light. The differences in weight between the various parts of the body naturally have an effect on the level of compression of the mattress, and thus on the position where the body is supported.
- If, for example, the mattress has a uniform firmness between the head end and the foot end, the mattress will be more deeply compressed in the trunk region, which can result in an uncomfortable posture. Many attempts have already been made to resolve this problem, for example by using zones with spring elements of different stiffnesses. In addition, it is desirable for the profiling adjustable bed to have a certain aesthetic quality, such that the furnishing of, for example, a bedroom can contribute to a feeling of wellbeing that is conducive to achieving a good night's sleep.
- According to the profiling adjustable bed furniture item disclosed in EP-A 168 190, the top surface thereof is convex. This is less desirable with regard to providing a high degree of comfort. The aim of the invention is therefore to provide an improved profiling adjustable bed furniture item where as far as possible account is taken of the requirements specified above. This aim is achieved in that the mattress base and the mattress have at least one position in which the upper side is flat.
- The fact that the thickness of the whole made up of the mattress and mattress base varies has a number of attractive aspects. First of all, in this context consideration can be given to the special appearance of the furniture item constructed in this way. If, for example, the underside of the mattress base rises from a centre section to the head end and the foot end, a light, as it were floating appearance is obtained.
- In addition, the comfort of the springs can be increased by means of the variation in thickness. In this case, provision is preferably made that the thickness of the mattress between the top surface and the bottom surface thereof, viewed in the direction between the head end and the foot end, varies and that, in at least one position of the mattress base, the frame and the mattress, the top surface is flat and the bottom surface of the mattress as well as the surface of the mattress base are not flat.
- In the furniture item according to the invention this results in a division into zones by means of adapting the thickness of the mattress. In the centre, section of the mattress, where the relatively heavy trunk of the person is located, the mattress is relatively thick, such that a relatively high compression can occur without this detracting from the comfort. The mattress can provide sufficient springing in the centre section, while the less thick sections of the mattress adjacent to the head end and the foot end exhibit less pronounced compression. Consequently, the body can be supported in a straight, not sagging posture.
- The mattress preferably has a head-end section and an adjoining centre section, which head-end section has a thickness that decreases from the centre section towards the free end. The mattress can also have a foot-end section and an adjoining centre section, which foot-end section has a thickness that decreases from the centre section towards the free end. In this embodiment the mattress has a regular and flowing outline, which also gives the external shape an attractive aspect.
- According to one variant of the invention, which can provide the light and floating character of the furniture item already mentioned, the thickness of the mattress base can vary, viewed in the direction between the head end and the foot end. In this context the mattress base can have a head-end section with a thickness that decreases from the centre section towards the free end. Furthermore, the mattress base can have a foot-end section with a thickness that decreases from the centre section towards the free end.
- The mattress base can be either rigid or articulated. In the latter case, the mattress base can have a centre section and a head-end section connected to it such that it can pivot. Furthermore, the mattress base can have a centre section and a foot-end section connected to it such that it can pivot. Control means are provided in the customary manner for adjusting the pivot angle of the head-end section and/or the foot-end section.
- The invention will now be discussed in greater detail below on the basis of illustrative embodiments shown in the figures.
- Figures 1-4 show a first illustrative embodiment of a profiling adjustable bed furniture item according to the invention.
- Figures 5 - 8 show further variants of the furniture item according to the invention.
- The illustrative embodiment shown in Figures 1 - 4 of a bed according to the invention comprises a
mattress base 1 and amattress 2. The thickness between theupper side 11 and theunderside 12 of the whole decreases towards the head end and the foot end. The mattress base has asurface 3, for example in the form of transversely stretched, interconnecting helical springs. Themattress 2 has atop surface 4 and abottom surface 5 that rests on thesurface 3 of themattress base 1. - The
mattress 2 has a head-end section 6, a centre section 7 and a foot-end section 8. As shown in the figures, the centre section 7 has a constant thickness, while the head-end section 6 and the foot-end section 8 have a decreasing thickness. - In the position shown in Figure 1, the outline of the
top surface 3 of themattress base 1 is not flat, such that thetop surface 4 of themattress 2 is completely flat. The advantage of this is that a person lying on the bed is comfortably supported in that the compressibility and firmness of the mattress are matched to the heavier and lighter parts of the human body. - As shown in Figures 2-4, such a mattress can, of course, also be adjusted to a non-flat position in order to enable a seated posture. To that end, the
mattress base 1 has an articulatedframe 9, that is supported on a substrate by means of abase 10. - In the variant shown in Figures 5 and 6, the
mattress base 1 and themattress 2 together have anupper side 11 and anunderside 12, between which the thickness varies. In the embodiment in Figures 5, 6 and 8, this is achieved by using amattress 2 with a varying thickness and amattress base 1 with a constant thickness, yet a bent shape which is adapted to the outline of thebottom surface 5 of themattress 2. Thetop surface 4 of themattress 2 is consequently always flat. - In the variant in Figure 5, the
mattress base 1 together with themattress 2 are accommodated in an enveloping cover, as a result of which the whole has the appearance of a single unit. - In the variant in Figure 6, the
mattress base 1 and themattress 2 are kept separate, with themattress base 1 being fairly thin, for example a woven spring frame. - In the variant in Figure 8, the frame is fairly thick and can in this case be constructed as a so-called box spring.
- The variant in Figure 7 shows a furniture item according to the invention with a light, floating appearance. This is achieved by means of a
mattress 2 with a constant thickness, while themattress base 1 has a decreasing thickness towards the head end and the foot end. Thesurfaces mattress base 1 andmattress 2 facing one another are completely flat in that case.
