Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a washing machine, and more particularly, to a washing machine designed to supply wash water into a drum through a drive shaft.
  • washing machines are used to remove contaminants adhered to laundry such as clothes and bedclothes contained in a drum through interaction between water and detergent. Description

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Field of the Invention
  • The present invention relates to a washing machine, and more particularly, to a washing machine designed to supply wash water into a drum through a drive shaft.
  • Description of the Related Art
  • Generally, washing machines are used to remove contaminants adhered to laundry such as clothes and bedclothes contained in a drum through interaction between water and detergent. Washing machines may be classified into an agitator type washing machine, a pulsator type washing machine, and a drum type washing machine.
  • The agitator type washing machine is adapted to wash laundry by rotating a washing rod protruded at the center of the drum right and left. The pulsator type washing machine is adapted to wash the laundry using a frictional force between the laundry and a water stream formed by rotating a disk-shaped pulsator provided to a lower portion of a tub right and left. The drum type washing machine is adapted to wash the laundry by rotating a drum having a plurality of lifters protruded from an inner surface thereof after supplying water, detergent, and the laundry into the drum.
  • Fig. 1 is a cross-sectional view illustrating the inner structure of a conventional washing machine.
  • Referring to Fig. 1, the conventional washing machine comprises a cabinet 2, a tub 10 installed in the cabinet 2 for containing wash water w, a drum 6 rotatably disposed within the tub 10 for containing laundry m, a drive shaft 8 passing through the tub 6 for rotating the drum 6, a driving unit 10 for rotating the drive shaft 8, a water supply device 16 for supplying the wash water w into the tub 4, and a drainage device 14 for draining contaminated wash water w from the tub 4 to the outside.
  • With the conventional washing machine constructed as described above, the wash water w is supplied into the tub 6 through the water supply device 12 to be contained in a lower portion of the tub 6, and is then supplied into the drum to soak into the laundry m. Then, as the drum 6 is rotated within the tub 5, the laundry m is moved in the drum 6, and is washed or rinsed.
  • After washing or rinsing the laundry m, contaminated wash water w is drained from the tub 4 to the outside of the washing machine through the drainage device 14.
  • Meanwhile, as shown in Fig. 2, in order to enhance washing performance or rinsing performance, the washing machine may further comprise a circulation device 14 which pumps the wash water w from the tub 4 to a front upper side of the drum 6, and then injects the wash water w into the drum.
  • However, since a flow path of the conventional washing machine through which the wash water w is pumped to the front upper side of the drum 6 has a long distance, causing an increase of flow resistance therein, it is difficult to rapidly inject a great amount of wash water w into the tub.
  • Additionally, since the wash water w is injected from the front upper side of the drum 6 into the drum, a non-injected region A can be generated in the tub, causing the wash water not to be uniformly injected over the laundry.

  • The sealing member 98 is fixed to the drive shaft 86 or to the motor 70, and is provided with the water supply bellows pipe 97 slidably connected thereto. Alternatively, the sealing member 98 may be fixed to the water supply bellows pipe 97, and be slidably connected to the drive shaft 86 or to the motor 70. The following description will be limited to the case where the sealing member 98 is fixed to the drive shaft 86 or to the motor 70, and provided with the water supply bellows pipe 97 slidably connected thereto.
  • Reference numerals 112 and 116 indicate bearings equipped to the tub 60 to support the drive shaft 82.
  • Reference numeral 120 indicates a bearing holder equipped to the tub 60 to hold the bearings 112 and 116.
  • Operation of the washing machine according to the invention will be described as follows.
  • First, after laundry m is input to the drum 76 and detergent is supplied to the detergent barrel 96, the door 59 is closed, and instructions for a washing or rinsing process and time for the process are selected. The water supply valve 94 is turned on for a predetermined time, and allows a predetermined amount of wash water w to pass therethrough.
  • Then, the wash water w passes through the water supply valve 94 and the water supply hose 95, and flows into the detergent barrel 96 where the wash water w is combined with detergent. The detergent-dissolved wash water w passes through the detergent barrel 96, and is guided to a rear side of the drive shaft 86 via the water supply bellows pipe 97.
  • The detergent-dissolved wash water w guided to the rear side of the drive shaft 86 passes through the drive shaft 86 along the water supply path 87 of the drive shaft 86, passes through the spider 80 along the water supply path 85 of the spider 80, and flows into the water supply path 91 of the lifters 90 along the water supply path 79 of the drum 76.
  • The detergent-dissolved wash water w flowing into the water supply path 91 of the lifters 90 is injected into the drum 76 through the injection nozzles 92, and soaks into the laundry m.
  • Then, when the motor 70 is turned on to rotate the drive shaft 86, the spider 80 and the drum 76 rotate together with the drive shaft 86, and the lifters 90 raise the laundry m inside the drum 76. At this time, the laundry m is rotated and then falls due to gravity from an upper portion inside the drum 76, thereby removing contaminants from the laundry m.
  • Meanwhile, in the washing machine of the invention, when the water supply valve 94 is turned on for a predetermined time during rotation of the drum 76 as described above, the wash water w having passed through the water supply valve 94 sequentially passes through the water supply hose 95, the detergent barrel 96, the water supply bellows pipe 97, the water supply path 87 of the drive shaft 86, the water supply path 85 of the spider 90, the water supply path 79 of the drum 76, and the water supply path 91 of the lifters 90. Then, the wash water w is injected into the drum 74 through the injection nozzles 92, and strongly collides with the laundry, thereby further enhancing washing force for the laundry m.
  • After the washing process is performed for the predetermined time as described above, the motor 70 is turned off, and the drainage pump 66 is driven for a predetermined time. Then, contaminated wash water w is drained from the tub 60 to the outside of the washing machine along the drainage bellows pipe 65, the drainage pump 66, and the drainage hose 67.
  • Next, the washing machine performs the rinsing process for rinsing the laundry m to remove the detergent or suds therefrom.
  • As with the washing process, when instructions for the rinsing process are input to the washing machine, the water supply valve 94 is turned on for a predetermined time, and allows a predetermined amount of wash water w to pass therethrough. The wash water w flows into the detergent barrel 96 along the water supply hose 95, passes through the detergent barrel 96 without dissolving the detergent, and is guided to the rear side of the drive shaft 86 along the water supply bellows pipe 97.
  • As with the water supply before the washing process, the wash water w guided to the rear side of the drive shaft 86 is injected into the drum 76 through the injection nozzles 92, and soaks into the laundry m.
  • Then, as with the washing process, when the motor 70 is turned on to rotate the drive shaft 86, the lifters 90 move the laundry m inside the drum 76, thereby removing the detergent or the suds from the laundry m.
  • Meanwhile, in the washing machine of the invention, when the water supply valve 94 is turned on for a predetermined time during the rinsing process as described above, that is, during rotation of the drum 76, the wash water w having passed through the water supply valve 94 is injected into the drum 74 as with the washing process, and strongly collides the laundry, thereby further enhancing rising force for the laundry m.
  • After the rinsing process is performed for the predetermined time as described above, the motor 70 is turned off, and the drainage pump 66 is driven for a predetermined time. Then, the wash water w containing the suds is drained from the tub 60 to the outside of the washing machine along the drainage bellows pipe 65, the drainage pump 66, and the drainage hose 67.
