Abstract
The invention relates to containers with bactericidal, bacteriostatical and antifungal characteristics and to a process for obtaining these containers by rotational molding, using thermoplastic materials which comprise titanium dioxide and silver chloride in their composition. The containers carried out according to the invention , are intended for storing and sterilizing water and other fluids, in the conditions in which there is necessary to inhibit the microflora (bacteria, see weeds, mooshrooms and others), thereby preventing the biological and organoleptical modifications of the content for long time. The containers shall not be used for storing fluids in natural fermentation (wine, pickles and others) due to that inhibition.
Description
CONTAINERS FROM THERMOPLASTIC MATERIALS WITH BACTERICIDAL CHARACTERISTICS
The invention relates to a process of carrying out some containers from thermoplastic materials with bactericidal, bacteriostatical and antifungal characteristics for storing and sterilizing water and other fluids, these containers being carried out by the rotational molding process. The bacteriostatical characteristics are obtained by the incorporation in the thermoplastic material of an inorganic biocide constituted from a mixture of titanium dioxide and silver chloride. There are known different processes for obtaining the bactericidal characteristics which involve the use of organic chloride derivatives , incorporated in the content of the material. The disadvantage of these materials consists of the maximum speed migration at the surface, in the sensitivity at the processing temperatures, the low effect in time and increased risk for the environment. There are known processes which use silver deposits in very thin layers or the incorporation of colloidal silver in the product mass. This method supposes the use of bigquantities of silver which is very expensive and in shortage, surface treatments which can complicate very much the technologies for manufacturing and it leads to big production costs. The material is not used efficiently, the action being only at the surface of the fluid, the remainder of the material being inactive. The invention solves these problems by using an inorganic biocide based on silver ions, included in the mass of thermoplastic material, conferring bactericidal, bacteriostatical and antifungal characteristics to the material, the material being used for obtaining containers for storing and sterilizing water and other fluids. The biocide is constituted from a mixture of titanium dioxide as inert carrier and silver chloride as active material, by weight ratio of 8 : 2. The mixture is finely crushed up to a residue of maximum 0,02% on the sieve of 45 μm and it is omogenized for 30...45 minutes by using a standard blender for powders. The bacteriostatical effect is achieved at the interface between the thermoplastic material which has the biocide included therein and the fluid. Due to the very little solubility, it is established a controlled balance concentration of 3 parts per million of silver ions, the migration rate for silver ions being dictated by the consumption speed -(the silver ions are released as the consumption) -goes on thereby ensuring a very long life time. The carrying out of the containers with bacteriostatical, bactericidal and antifungal characteristics is made by the incorporation of the biocide in the powder raw material, in a concentration ranging depending on thefinal product thickness between 0,005% by weight (for a thickness of 50 μm) and 0,2% by weight (for a thickness of 2 mm). The biocide activity can se seen at the interface of the fluid-thermoplastic material and the use of the material in the products with walls formed from two layers is more economical and efficient, the biocide
being included only in the internal layer with a reccomanded thickness of 0.05...1 mm. The laboratory studies, using the thin layer method applied to some cultures of bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia Coli) show a reduction of 99,6% for Staphylococcus aureus and of 95,2% for Escherichia Coli in the first 24 hours. The complete sterilization is obtained in aproximately 28 days from the storing date. The use of the biocide has the following advantages: -it can be utilised with any thermoplastic material known in this moment in industry (such as polyethylene, polypropilene, polystyrene and others ) without affecting the physical and chemical characteristics of the material -it is active in low concentrations (0,1...0,2 by weight) -the thermal stability is up to 450°C and for a large domain of pH -the toxicity level is very low -it has minimum impact for the environment -it does not put problems for labour medicine (it is non irritating and non-alergical) -it has high activity for a large spectrum of microorganisms (bacteria, see weeds, mooshrooms and others) -it has excellent performance in a thin layer The carrying out of the containers according to the invention, is made by rotational moulding, a process of manufacturing which permits to obtain complicated geometrical forms and big dimensions, at competitive prices and which has no residual mechanical efforts. By that process the raw materials as powder is introduced into a mold provided with a pipe for ventilation and which has a simultaneous rotation about two axes. The molding form is introduced into a furnace and heated up to the melting point of the material , which adheres to the walls thereof. After the complete melting of the material, the mold is removed from the furnace and cooled up to solidifycation point of the material. Both, the stop of forming in the furnace and the step of cooling are made with the mold in rotational movement about two axes forfixing the material to walls thereof. This process for manufacturing containers permits to obtain containers with walls formed from one or two layers , the biocide being introduced in the single layer or in the interior layer. Forthe multilayered construction, the both layers can be formed from the same material or from different materials, for example polyethylene of high density to the external side and polyethylene of low density to the internal side. Example 1 In one example acccording to the invention, there was carried out one vertical cylindrical containerfrom low density polyethylene , with the capacity of 1000 litres, and the wall formed from two layers, the interior layer containing the biocide. For that purpose there were weghed two portions of polyethylene: one portion of 25 kg forthe exterior layer and one portion of 3 kg for the interior layer. In the portion for the interior layer there were introduced 6 g of biocide according to the invention (the mixture by weight ratio of 8: 2 of titanium dioxide : silver chloride) which was homogenised a time for 20 minutes in a standard blender for powders. The material forthe exterior layer was introduced in the mold form, the mold form was closed and introduced into the furnace for 25 minutes to a temperature of 230°C,and the rotational speed about two axes was of 7,0, and 2,1 rot/min, respectively. The mold form was drawn out from furnace, the ventilation plug was taken out and the previously prepared mixture containing polyethylene-biocidewas introduced , the form was
closed and introduced into the furnace and was maintained there for 5 minutes for melting the mixture and the application thereof on the walls. The mold form was drawn out from the furnace and cooled slowly for 40 minutes with a fan having a suitable power, the mold form being all time in rotational movement, the rotational speed about the two axes being of 7 and of 2,1 rot min, respectively . The rotational movement was stopped, the mold form was opened and the container obtained in this way was extracted therefrom. Example 2 In one example acccording to the invention, one horizontal cylindrical container was carried out from low density polyethylene, said container having the capacity of 3000 litres, and having the wall formed from one layer which contain the biocide. For obtaining the container there are made the following: there were weighed 75 kg polyethylene and 10 g of biocide (a mixture in a weight ratio of 8: 2 of titanium dioxide : silver chloride) according to the invention which was homogenised for 20 minutes in a standard blender for powders. The material was introduced into the mold form, the form was closed and introduced into the furnace for 30 minutes at a temperature of 230°C, the rotational speed about two axes was of 6, 1 ,and of 2,0 rot/min, respectivelly. The mold form is drawn out from the furnace and cooled slowly for 60 minutes with a suitable power fan , the mold form being all time in rotational movement, the rotational speed about the two axes being of 7 and of 2,1 rot/min .respectivelly . The rotational movement is stopped, the mold form is opened and the container obtained in this way is extracted therefrom.
