Definitions
- the present invention relates to a method and an apparatus for printing information in a Document, in particular proprietary information in a passport.
- a passport generally has the form of a bound Notebook or booklet, in which on one Side or two opposite sides one Legend is pre-printed, which indicates what kind of the personal details of the passport holder in different, areas designated by the legend the page are to be entered.
- a substantially leaf-shaped form such as a remittance slip this is comparatively just possible, because in the production of the form the printed form pattern with a low tolerance with respect to the edges of the form sheet can be placed. It is sufficient therefore for most applications, if one used to complete the form used printing machine is capable of the location of the edges of the form to capture with reasonable accuracy or Edges of the form exactly in a given Position so that knowing the position the edges the position of a fill Field calculated and the desired indication in the Field can be printed.
- the position of in the passport to be printed by: a graphic element of the form such as a word of the legend is captured and the position the information to be printed in relation to this graphic Element is set. Also this solution is not fully satisfactory, because then Information to be printed near the margin cut off could be. There is also a machine reading of statements in which one machine-readable Details printed part of the document by a Slotted a reader, considerably difficult or even impossible if the position of machine-readable information relating to the edge the document varies too much.
- the object of the invention is a method and a To create devices that make it possible both machine-readable as well as with the naked eye in high density in a document, in particular a Document in booklet form such as a passport, too To Print.
- Official documents such as passports are in general numbered or otherwise numbered with one specific to each individual document of its kind Provided information that the identification of the document, even before owner-specific Information to be entered in the document. Around this document individualizing information as possible to make manipulation-proof, can these are formed in particular by a perforation pattern be. Because such a pattern for a human editor is poorly readable, it is appropriate for the processing of the documents, if the finished document the same individualizing Information also in printed form wearing. To this pressure already in the production Creating the blank document is an additional one Operation required, what the cost of Blank document increases. A further education of the inventive method allows this operation to save by the individualizing Information read from the document and this then printed again in the document.
- a camera can be used anyway for Detection of an edge and / or a graphic Elements of the document is needed, and printing of individualizing information with the printing of the user-specific Can be given, causes the printing of the the document does not individualize information significant costs.
- the first indication can expediently printed in a machine-readable form become. To make reading easier more precisely, to a reading machine To facilitate finding the information, the first indication expediently of filler flanked to be printed.
- the two edges promoted the document to be printed and one to the conveying direction substantially vertical first edge of the document is during of promoting, roughly with the help of a simple in relation on a conveyor fixed sensor, detected; then document and printhead can be in this Conveying direction correctly positioned in relation to each other just by following the document Detection of the first edge by a predetermined Route is further promoted.
- step A a two-dimensional image of the document generated and in this picture the second edge recognized.
- the image can also be used to recognize the first edge in it and document and printhead perpendicular to it with respect to each other to position.
- An apparatus for carrying out the inventive Method comprises at least one camera for Generating an image of the document, preferably
- at least two cameras aligned are to different sections of the document capture.
- a camera can be set to a desired one Position of the two edges to be detected be aligned while the other on a desired Position of the graphic to be detected Feature is aligned. So can the image capture on a small part of the surface of the document remain limited, thereby increasing the amount of processing image data is kept small.
- Two inexpensive cameras with low pixel count can therefore without loss of positioning accuracy single, considerably more expensive camera with many times replace larger number of pixels. Because the fields of vision the two cameras can be small these are placed close to the document to be printed be without a complicated imaging optics is required so that the device is compact can be held.
- the device comprises a UV source to illuminate the field of view at least a camera to the individualizing information to make visible.
- the device may further include a radio interface be equipped, which makes it possible, at least a part of the document to be printed Information or with this meaningful Wirelessly to a disk of the information to transfer to a printing document.
- the printhead of the device is preferably a piezoelectrically driven inkjet printhead. This works at lower temperatures as, for example, a thermoelectrically driven Printhead and therefore allows the use ultraviolet-resistant pigment inks.
- a passport (see Fig. 2) has conventionally the form of a booklet or booklet 21 with a Plurality of wrapped in an envelope 22 Pages 23, 24, of which one or two pages 23 information entered by the issuing authority about the person of the holder and the rest Pages 24 in general for visa stamps are released.
- the binding line 25 of the passbook 21 forms the upper Edge of the page in the illustration of Fig.
- a machine-readable zone 20 is at one of the Bindenaht 25 remote outer edge of the page 23 arranged.
- fields 01 to 19 are different from the illustration of FIG. 1 not by pre-printed Lines delimited from each other. Rather, it is each field just by a pre-printed legend denoted in its lower left corner, whose Text the type of registered in the field Indications and those with this information should not be overprinted.
- Fig. 3 shows a schematic view of a Printer for printing personal information in a passport.
- the printer has one here unfolded lid 31 shown housing 32. From the left side of the housing 32 is an investment table 33, which is intended to be on to place the printed passport 21.
- the investment table 33 is part of a carrier plate 34, which is across the housing 32 to a dispensing opening 57 extends to the right side.
- the carrier plate 34 comprises one of two Conveyor belt 35 looped first plate section 36, a second plate portion 37, the parallel to the first plate portion 36 a slightly higher level than this one, and a vertical bridge 38.
- a front part 26 of the passport 21 to be printed which is the front half of the envelope 22 and one to be printed Page 23 (which is the front inside of envelope 26 or page 2, i. act the back of the first sheet of the passport can) lies on the second plate portion 37 on, the lateral edge of the front Envelope half touches the web 38.
- the Bindenaht 25 of the passport is above the first Plate section 36, near the border to the second Plate section 37.
- a rump 27, all other sheets of passport 21 and the back Half of the envelope 26 is located on the conveyor belt 35 of the first plate portion 36.
- the Height difference between the plate sections 36 and 37 equals the difference in thickness between the lying on the different plate sections Divide 26, 27 of passport 21 out, making it possible is, in the further processing of the passport 21 the two open pages for printing to bring to an equal height.
- an inlet opening 39 are from the housing 32 guide webs 40 which serve not completely flat lying sides of the open Passbook 21 gradually pushing flat, while this with the help of the conveyor belt 35 in the Housing 32 is retracted so as to damage of the passport book at the inlet opening 39.
- the guide webs 40 can over the entire Width of the inlet opening 39 to be distributed; in which However, embodiments shown here are only two guide bars 40 above the higher Plate section 37 available; above the plate section 36, a radio antenna 41 is pivotable mounted on the housing 32 which serves to store data of the passport holder to transfer to a semiconductor memory, which together with an antenna in the the rear half of the passport 21 incorporated is.
- each of the two Conveyor belt 35 a plurality of pinch rollers 42nd attached, the vertically movable and by a not shown spring are pressed down to the on the plate portion 36 lying rear part 27th the passport 21 to the conveyor belt 35 print and so a precise linear transport of passport book 21 to ensure.
- the pressure rollers 42 are each over Arms 43 pivotally hinged to crossbars 44, which extend transversely to the conveying direction; but Other types of attachment are possible.
- An ink jet printhead 45 is known in the art Way on a rail 46 transverse to the conveying direction of the passport and carries four ink cartridges, a black cartridge 47 and three colored ones 48 cartridges that allow a colored photo of the passport holder to print in the passport.
- Two cameras 49, 50 are above the panel section 37 mounted in the housing 32 and observe a each indicated by a dashed outline Field of view 51 on the plate section 37, in Conveying direction in front of the movement range of the print head 45th
- the sensor 52 is preferably a light barrier formed, one of which above the Plate portion 37 lying light source in the Fig. Is omitted and one in an opening of the Plate section 37 arranged photocell visible is.
- leading edge 28 of the photocell 52 detects when it detects the light on the photocell interrupts.
- To make an exact recording of leading edge 28 may be provided be that when this first the sensor 52 has happened, the conveying direction of the conveyor belt 35 reversed at least once and the conveying speed is reduced to the passage the leading edge 28 through the photocell second or third time, each with reduced Speed, to allow the leading Edge with sufficient accuracy on the sensor 52 is placed.
- the conveyor belts 35 over a given distance back to the original one Conveying direction moves, so that the leading edge 28 of the passport 21 in the field of view 51st the right camera 50 comes to rest. That of the Camera 50 delivered image can be used to based on the position of the leading edge 28 in this Picture to check their position; primarily However, the camera 50 is used to a side Edge 29 to capture the page to be printed. If the side to be printed on the inside of the cover the passport is 21, lies the to be detected lateral edge 29 usually directly on the web 38th at; However, if the page to be printed 23 a Page of an inner sheet of the passport is so can its lateral edge 29, as shown in Fig. 2 to recognize quite in relation to the edge of the envelope 22 be moved.
- the processor can be part of the printer itself be; but it can also belong to a host computer, the printer with the in the passport to supplied printing data.
- the processor can change the location of the printable Page in the printer exactly, but not the Location of the legends on the page in question, the depending on the production accuracy of the passbook 21 um can scatter a few millimeters.
- the camera 49 is provided. In the field of view 51 of this camera 49 is in in Fig. 6 state shown at least the field 05 of the passport 21, in which at this time a current Passport number already registered is.
- the processor Identified in the image provided by the camera 49 the processor the legend and calculated from their position and the known structure of Page 23 the exact position of all printable areas fields 1 to 19. He also identifies the characters that make up the sequential number of the Passbook composed.
- the rod 56 is arranged, the a variety of rotatable cylindrical rollers 54 turns.
- the pole is stationary, so between the rollers 54 and the plate section 37 a Gap 55 exists by which of the above Plate section 37 lying part 26 of the passport book 21 fits with play.
- the page is pressing 23 of the unfolded passport 21 from below against the rolls 54, so that their underside is the height defines the surface of the passport to be printed.
- the rod 56 is in one arranged such a height that the tops of both Parts 26, 27 of the passport at exactly the same level lie. So it is possible when printing the Printhead 45 in a train over both halves of the Passing passbook and line by line Line both halves simultaneously with the same quality to print, if for the type concerned Passport provided a printing on both sides is.
- the processor calculates the location of the printable Areas of all fields 1 to 19 and controls the Print the enrollment in these fields Details when the printhead is one of these areas happens. So is for the fields 1 to 19, which determines the perception by a human Information such as the name and place of birth of the passport holder or whose photo contains, ensures that these are always in the right place, fitting oriented to the legend, but possibly in passport too Pass varying distances from its side edges, to be printed.
- the printed in the machine-readable zone Indications 59 can be at least one Subset of the printed in boxes 1 to 19 Details including in the picture from the camera 49 identified pre-printed number 60 of the Passbook included. Not for printing information required areas of the machine-readable zone 20 are filled in with filler character 61.
- passport books to be printed do not have a serial number in field 05, z. B. because they by a perforated serial number 58 or, if available, one in the semiconductor memory of the envelope stored and readable via the antenna 41 customization information clearly identifiable are, so one of the cameras 49, 50 can fit be placed so that the perforation 58 in it Field of view 51 falls, or the customization information can be read with the help of the antenna 41 and then from the printer itself into field 05 be registered.

Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a method and an apparatus for printing information in a Document, in particular proprietary information in a passport.
A passport generally has the form of a bound Notebook or booklet, in which on one Side or two opposite sides one Legend is pre-printed, which indicates what kind of the personal details of the passport holder in different, areas designated by the legend the page are to be entered.
There are a variety of applications where individual information in fields provided for this purpose a form will be printed correctly must, e.g. in the automatic creation of Remittance forms that a biller wants to settle an invoice. Here, for example, must Invoice number, customer number and / or Invoice amount each correct to one for this place of the form to be placed, without dealing with pre-printed text or other graphic To overlap elements of the form.
In a substantially leaf-shaped form such as a remittance slip this is comparatively just possible, because in the production of the form the printed form pattern with a low tolerance with respect to the edges of the form sheet can be placed.
Such a technique is in principle also for printing of details in a passport or other official Document usable, as long as guaranteed is that defined by the form form fields of the document to be filled in relation to on the edges with sufficient accuracy always be in the same position. This requirement However, this is not always possible. One The reason for this is the increasing density of information in a modern passport.
For example, considered the counterfeit security of by improving official identity documents the various personal details of the holder not only in a form recognizable to the naked eye, but also in coded form in such a document be included to make a comparison the information visible to the naked eye with the coded To be able to recognize a forgery. To the person control in international travel to simplify and accelerate the need to have at least part of the information to the person of the holder on such Document optimized for machine reading Form to have. Even if the machine readability the details of their readability with does not necessarily exclude the naked eye, rarely is it optimal for visual capture, so for the sake of speedy machinability of the document can not be waived, the same information in one for reading optimized by a human operator To install mold. There are also aspirations additional biometric information about the owner to enter in the passports, so far not yet common. The large amount of to be accommodated Information forces you to print fields provided with this information not greater than absolutely necessary, i. e. the position tolerance when printing the information in the fields is low.
In addition, in contrast to individual Scroll existing forms a passport between printing his sheets with the form and entering the owner-specific Information in the fields of the form one Goes through a variety of processing steps, which make it difficult to fill in the fields of the form exactly in relation to the edges of the passport to position. After printing with the Forms must be the sheets of the passport put together in a booklet, with a hard-wearing Cover provided and trimmed at the edges to make a blank pass. The positions of the form fields in relation to the Edges of the pass can therefore easily around a few Fluctuate millimeters. If this fluctuation in the Filling out the passport with the personal details his owner is not compensated, it can happen that the personal information about the preprinted legend to be printed. They are then only readable with difficulty and the passport therefore unusable.
It would be conceivable in principle, the position of in the passport to be printed by: a graphic element of the form such as a word of the legend is captured and the position the information to be printed in relation to this graphic Element is set.
The object of the invention is a method and a To create devices that make it possible both machine-readable as well as with the naked eye in high density in a document, in particular a Document in booklet form such as a passport, too To Print.
The problem is solved by a method with the
Features of claim 1 and an apparatus for
Implementation of the method as defined in
Official documents such as passports are in general numbered or otherwise numbered with one specific to each individual document of its kind Provided information that the identification of the document, even before owner-specific Information to be entered in the document. As for reading the individualizing information a camera can be used anyway for Detection of an edge and / or a graphic Elements of the document is needed, and printing of individualizing information with the printing of the user-specific Can be given, causes the printing of the the document does not individualize information significant costs.
As already stated, the first indication can expediently printed in a machine-readable form become. To make reading easier more precisely, to a reading machine To facilitate finding the information, the first indication expediently of filler flanked to be printed.
Preferably, in connection with the detection the two edges promoted the document to be printed and one to the conveying direction substantially vertical first edge of the document is during of promoting, roughly with the help of a simple in relation on a conveyor fixed sensor, detected; then document and printhead can be in this Conveying direction correctly positioned in relation to each other just by following the document Detection of the first edge by a predetermined Route is further promoted.
To capture the second edge and the printhead positioning with respect to them is preferred in step A, a two-dimensional image of the document generated and in this picture the second edge recognized.
If desired, the image can also be used to recognize the first edge in it and document and printhead perpendicular to it with respect to each other to position.
An apparatus for carrying out the inventive Method comprises at least one camera for Generating an image of the document, preferably However, at least two cameras aligned are to different sections of the document capture. For example, a camera can be set to a desired one Position of the two edges to be detected be aligned while the other on a desired Position of the graphic to be detected Feature is aligned. So can the image capture on a small part of the surface of the document remain limited, thereby increasing the amount of processing image data is kept small. Furthermore is to achieve a given positioning accuracy of the printhead in relation to the Document required resolution of the cameras all the more less, the smaller the cutouts are chosen, to which the cameras are aligned. Two inexpensive cameras with low pixel count can therefore without loss of positioning accuracy single, considerably more expensive camera with many times replace larger number of pixels. Because the fields of vision the two cameras can be small these are placed close to the document to be printed be without a complicated imaging optics is required so that the device is compact can be held.
If the document to be read individualizes the document to be printed Information with one under ultraviolet lighting visible color is printed, expediently the device comprises a UV source to illuminate the field of view at least a camera to the individualizing information to make visible.
The device may further include a radio interface be equipped, which makes it possible, at least a part of the document to be printed Information or with this meaningful Wirelessly to a disk of the information to transfer to a printing document.
The printhead of the device is preferably a piezoelectrically driven inkjet printhead. This works at lower temperatures as, for example, a thermoelectrically driven Printhead and therefore allows the use ultraviolet-resistant pigment inks.

Zivilluftfahrtorganisation ICAO zufolge soll
in Zukunft ein in Fig. 1 dargestelltes international
einheitliches Format für Reisepässe eingeführt
werden, das eine Automatisierung der Überprüfung
der Personalien von Reisenden unterschiedlicher Nationalität
im grenzüberschreitenden Verkehr erleichtern
soll.
Rand der Seite in der Darstellung der Fig. 1;
A passport (see Fig. 2) has conventionally

In practice, fields 01 to 19 are different from the illustration of FIG. 1 not by pre-printed Lines delimited from each other. Rather, it is each field just by a pre-printed legend denoted in its lower left corner, whose Text the type of registered in the field Indications and those with this information should not be overprinted.
Fig. 3 zeigt in einer schematischen Ansicht einen

57 an dessen rechter Seite erstreckt.

When the printer is started and the
When this is done, the
The processor can be part of the printer itself be; but it can also belong to a host computer, the printer with the in the passport to supplied printing data.
Passbuches zusammensetzt.Based on the image supplied by the
Between the
Passbuches enthalten. Nicht zum Drucken von Angaben
benötigte Bereiche der maschinenlesbaren Zone 20
sind mit Füllzeichen 61 ausgefüllt.Based on the image obtained from the
Wenn die zu bedruckenden Passbücher keine Seriennummer
im Feld 05 haben, z. B. weil sie durch eine
einperforierte Seriennummer 58 oder, falls vorhanden,
eine in dem Halbleiterspeicher des Umschlags
gespeicherte und über die Antenne 41 lesbare Individualisierungsinformation
eindeutig identifizierbar
If the passport books to be printed do not have a serial number
