Definitions
- the present invention relates to a security element for documents, such as for example securities, passports, cards and identity cards, checks, banknotes and other similar documents.
- the present invention relates to a method of printing a security element for documents, such as for example securities, passports, cards and identity cards, checks, banknotes and other similar documents.
- Such security elements used, for example, special inks such as optically variable inks ( “OVI” ®), metallic inks and other inks having iridescent properties, these inks being used for printing particular geometric patterns or shapes on the value paper substrate, optically variable elements (“OVD” ® ) in the form of metallized patches (called “foils”) or holograms, and also moirés and other similar patterns , all being, on the one hand, very difficult or impossible to copy with current devices but, on the other hand, very easy to control visually or with the naked eye.
- OTI optically variable inks
- metallic inks and other inks having iridescent properties these inks being used for printing particular geometric patterns or shapes on the value paper substrate
- OTD optically variable elements
- metallized patches called “foils”
- moirés and other similar patterns all being, on the one hand, very difficult or impossible to copy with current devices but, on the other hand, very easy to control visually or with the naked eye.
- security elements are formed by combinations of lines and / or patterns with colors, which are only visible under certain conditions, for example UV light or transparency. Again, the interest of such security features is that they are easy to print or place on the document to be protected and they can be controlled by simple devices, even with the naked eye, but they are impossible to reproduce with current printers, scanners and copiers.
- the patent US 6,050,606 describes a security element for securities, for example for banknotes.
- This security element is formed by a bottom having at least two juxtaposed regions, each region having clean geometric patterns, said regions having a different color density.
- the security element further comprises a pattern corresponding to the region of the lowest color density superimposed on said region in a color selected to compensate for the difference in color density between said two regions.
- the security element appears uniform and without any reason to the naked eye, but the pattern emerges clearly in a photocopy of said element.
- the patent US 5,443,579 discloses another method of printing a latent image on a substrate. According to this patent, the printing of raised lines is combined with lines without relief. Thus, a latent color image is created which can not be reproduced with a photocopier or other photomechanical processes.
- Another technique uses watermarks in which the substrate, for example paper, is marked with lines or a pattern that are visible only in transparency.
- Another development of this technique concerns pseudo-watermarks formed by the creation of a window in the substrate, a technique used in particular with paper substrates which themselves are not normally transparent, said window being transparent.
- Requirement EP 0 614 133 discloses a security document having a printed background including geometric elements containing sets of printed lines at a first density. This document further comprises a cancellation pattern printed at a second density. A copy of the security document has the effect that the ground for cancellation appears prominently on the document, identifying the counterfeit.
- the object of the invention is to improve the known security elements, and the production processes of such elements.
- an object of the invention is to create a security element for securities improving elements already known and requiring a simple process and easy to implement.
- Another object of the invention is to provide a security element very difficult to copy and counterfeit with modern standard scanners and photocopiers and other equivalent devices but which can be easily printed with the current printing means.
- the first embodiment of the figure 1 shows a security element 1, of generally circular shape, comprising a bottom formed of a plurality of geometric elements 2 to 8 which individually have a rectangular shape. To simplify the representation, only a part of the geometric elements has been referenced. These geometric elements are themselves formed of a plurality of parallel lines. According to the invention, the lines forming two neighboring geometric elements are not parallel but form an angle between them, for example 30 °, 45 °, 60 ° or 90 °.
- the geometric elements are printed with two different inks so that neighboring elements, in the manner of a checkerboard, are printed alternately with a conventional offset ink, and with an ink having a gloss or a reflection effect of light, such as a metal ink, an optically variable ink, or an iridescent ink.
- the geometric elements 2, 4, 6 and 8 are printed with a conventional offset ink, and the elements 3, 5, 7 with the ink having a gloss and this pattern is repeated throughout the background of the security element 1. More generally, it can be said that elements whose lines are oriented in the same direction are printed with the same ink.
- the two inks used must have the most equal basic shade possible, such as for example a gold (metallic) ink with a brown offset ink, or a silver ink with a gray offset ink, or a gold with a yellow offset ink.
- Security elements according to this invention are preferably printed by means of a two-color offset process, for example with a printing machine as known from the patent. US 6,101,939 .
- FIG 2 a variant of this embodiment is shown.
- This variant consists in using equilateral triangles as geometric elements 9, 10 to form the bottom of the print with parallel lines.
- the procedure is the same as in the mode of the figure 1 that is, by alternately using conventional offset ink and ink with a gloss effect for adjacent geometric elements, in the manner of a checkerboard.
- FIGS. 3a to 3f show different background configurations that can be used to form the described checkerboard. These funds can also be called pavements. As can be seen, many equivalent geometrical shapes are possible, such as squares (3d), triangles (3b), “leaves” (3c), “propellers” (3f) and others ( Figures 3a and 3e ).
- the clear geometric elements of these figures can be printed using a conventional offset ink and the dark geometric elements of these figures can be printed by means of a gloss effect ink (or vice versa), for example with the color pairs indicated above.
- FIG. 4 and 5 figures in which a Pegase 11 pattern was added on the bottom of the Figures 1 and 2 , respectively.
- the elements identical to those of Figures 1 and 2 are referenced identically.
- the principle for the bottom of this mode of execution is the same as that described in reference to the preceding figures, namely printing in the manner of a checkerboard of geometric elements (rectangular 2 to 8, figure 4 or triangular 9 and 10, figure 5 ) with two inks having different properties as described above.
- the added pattern 11 is also printed with an ink having a gloss effect with a shade identical or similar to that used for the background.
- the effect is then reinforced in that the added pattern 11 "shifts" also according to the angle of view and appears or disappears when the angle of view of the security element is changed.
- Any pattern can of course be printed, such as a logo, an alphanumeric pattern, or combinations thereof.
- the figure 6 shows a block diagram of the method according to the invention.
- the lines of part of the geometric elements are printed with an ink and the lines of another part of the geometric elements are printed with an ink having metallic characteristics.
- the print order is irrelevant and one can reverse the steps indicated above.
- the lines of the geometric elements are printed using an offset method.
- the conventional ink has a gray color and the metallic ink has a metallic gray color, or the conventional ink has a brown color and the metallic ink has a gold color, or still the classic ink has a yellow color and the metallic ink has a golden color.

Description
The present invention relates to a security element for documents, such as for example securities, passports, cards and identity cards, checks, banknotes and other similar documents.
The present invention relates to a method of printing a security element for documents, such as for example securities, passports, cards and identity cards, checks, banknotes and other similar documents.
In the field of securities, especially banknotes, there is a growing need for security features as protection against counterfeiting. In recent years, computers, scanners and photocopiers have undergone significant technical improvements and it is possible to purchase high-performance devices at reasonable prices. As these devices have become very efficient, it has become necessary to develop new security elements, themselves also more efficient, for securities, such as banknotes, checks, credit cards, passports or documents. identity documents and other similar documents to protect these documents against counterfeiting and prevent them from being copied by current computers, scanners and photocopiers.
Such security elements used, for example, special inks such as optically variable inks ( "OVI" ®), metallic inks and other inks having iridescent properties, these inks being used for printing particular geometric patterns or shapes on the value paper substrate, optically variable elements ("OVD" ® ) in the form of metallized patches (called "foils") or holograms, and also moirés and other similar patterns , all being, on the one hand, very difficult or impossible to copy with current devices but, on the other hand, very easy to control visually or with the naked eye.
Other security elements are formed by combinations of lines and / or patterns with colors, which are only visible under certain conditions, for example UV light or transparency. Again, the interest of such security features is that they are easy to print or place on the document to be protected and they can be controlled by simple devices, even with the naked eye, but they are impossible to reproduce with current printers, scanners and copiers.

Another technique uses watermarks in which the substrate, for example paper, is marked with lines or a pattern that are visible only in transparency. Another development of this technique concerns pseudo-watermarks formed by the creation of a window in the substrate, a technique used in particular with paper substrates which themselves are not normally transparent, said window being transparent.
The object of the invention is to improve the known security elements, and the production processes of such elements.
More particularly, an object of the invention is to create a security element for securities improving elements already known and requiring a simple process and easy to implement.
Another object of the invention is to provide a security element very difficult to copy and counterfeit with modern standard scanners and photocopiers and other equivalent devices but which can be easily printed with the current printing means.
For this purpose, the invention comprises the features defined in the claims.

In addition, the geometric elements are printed with two different inks so that neighboring elements, in the manner of a checkerboard, are printed alternately with a conventional offset ink, and with an ink having a gloss or a reflection effect of light, such as a metal ink, an optically variable ink, or an iridescent ink.
Thus, for example, the
In addition, the two inks used must have the most equal basic shade possible, such as for example a gold (metallic) ink with a brown offset ink, or a silver ink with a gray offset ink, or a gold with a yellow offset ink.
These pairs of colors are of course given by way of example and other couples are of course possible.
The optical effect obtained by this impression is as follows: when we consider the element printed perpendicular to the printed surface, the printed element appears as a flat surface, whereas when the angle of view is changed (shift ), the printed element splits into two parts and the "checkerboard" pattern appears by highlighting the individual geometric elements.
The optical effect described above appears in the same way if triangular geometric elements are used.
As described above, the clear geometric elements of these figures can be printed using a conventional offset ink and the dark geometric elements of these figures can be printed by means of a gloss effect ink (or vice versa), for example with the color pairs indicated above.
The effect is then reinforced in that the added
Any pattern can of course be printed, such as a logo, an alphanumeric pattern, or combinations thereof.
Thus, an optical effect that is impossible to copy by copying or scanning is obtained, but which is very easy to control with the naked eye, with an instantaneous result, or with simple optical means.
- -) line thickness: approximately 75 microns,
- -) distance between two lines: approximately 125 microns,
- -) surface of the safety element: approximately 1.5 cm 2 .
According to the method of the invention, the lines of part of the geometric elements are printed with an ink and the lines of another part of the geometric elements are printed with an ink having metallic characteristics. Of course, the print order is irrelevant and one can reverse the steps indicated above.
Preferably, the lines of the geometric elements are printed using an offset method.
In the process according to the invention, preferably the conventional ink has a gray color and the metallic ink has a metallic gray color, or the conventional ink has a brown color and the metallic ink has a gold color, or still the classic ink has a yellow color and the metallic ink has a golden color.
