Zwei Schienen eines Gleises eines als isolierfähig angenommenen Oberbaus werden sowohl von einer ersten Achse einer Lokomotive als auch von einer letzen Achse eines Zielwagens kurzgeschlossen. Die Primärseite dieses Transformators wird aus der Koppelspule, die Sekundärseite aus der rechteckförmigen elektrischen Leiterschleife gebildet. Einem Strom in der Koppelspule ist somit einem magnetischen Fluss zuzuordnen, der aufgrund der Flussverkettung auch durch die aus Oberbau und Achsen gebildete Leiterschleife tritt. Damit beeinflusst der zu ermittelnde Abstand der Fahrzeuge auch die elektrischen Eigenschaften der Koppelspule, die einer auf der Lokomotive angeordnete Auswerteeinrichtung als Eingangsgröße zugeführt und ausgewertet werden.
