Abstract

A machine part (1) made of steel has been subjected to a nitriding surface hardening process, and comprises a surface layer portion (2) whose surface hardness is heightened by the nitriding and an inner layer portion (3) which is not affected by the nitriding and has a generally uniform hardness. The Vickers hardness of the inner layer portion (3) is 190-260 HV, and the surface layer portion (2) has a Vickers hardness of 340-460 HV at the reference position which is 50 µm deep from the surface of the part. The surface layer portion (2) has an effective hardened layer depth from the part surface (4) of 0.3 mm or more, at which the Vickers hardness is 270 HV. Thus, the machine part is excellent in the part strength and bend straightening property. A method for manufacturing such a machine part is also disclosed.
