Abstract

An adjustable dumbbell device includes a handle (40), a number of weights (31) each having a channel (34) to slidably receive the handle (40), and a latch (47) slidably engaged onto the handle (40) and engageable into the channels (34) of a selected number of the weights (31), to secure the selected number of the weights (31) to the handle (40). One or more beams (60) are attached to the handle (40), and a spring biasing catch (72) may lock the latch (47) to the beams (60) or the handle (40), for securing the selected number of the weights (31) to the handle (40). <IMAGE>

Description

  • The invention relates to an adjustable dumbbell according to the preamble portion of claim 1 having an easily and quickly adjustable structure.
  • U.S. Patent No. 4,566,690 to Schook , and U.S. Patent No. 5,407,413 to Kupferman disclose two of the typical dumbbells each including one or more weight rings to be secured together one by one. It takes a lot of time to assemble the weight rings.
  • U.S. Patent No. 5,839,997 to Roth et al . discloses another typical adjustable dumbbell including a number of weight rings to be secured together with a ritatabke shaft which may not solidly secure the weight rings to the shaft.
  • U.S. Patent Application No. 2002/0183174 A1 to Chen discloses a dumbbell; wherein the weights can be selectively coupled to the handle by means of a latch slidably received in the handle and extending through a central channel of the weights. By sliding the latch further out it is possible to increase the number of weights coupled to the handle while by sliding the latch further in the handle the number of weights can be reduced. This enables a user of the handle to change the total weight of the handle without moving the weights themselves.
  • The technical problem underlying the present invention is to provide an adjustable dumbbell including an easily and quickly adjustable structure.
  • This technical problem is solved by the teaching of claim 1. Further advantageous embodiments are specified in the dependent claims.
  • In the drawings:

  • Referring to FIGS. 1-5, an adjustable dumbbell comprises a base 10 including a recess 11 defined by two side bulges 12 each of which has a number of depressions 14 to erectly support weights 31 of a dumbbell device 3 which may also be erectly supported on ground without the base 10. Each of the weights 31 includes a groove 32 having an open top 33, and a lateral channel 34 communicating with the groove 32 and wider than the groove 32 of the weight 31. A handle 40 includes two end portions 41 each having a plate 42 having one or more orifices 46, an extension 43, and a peripheral passage 45 formed around the extension 43.
  • Two cylindrical latches 47 are slidably engaged onto the extensions 43 and engageable into the passages 45 of the handle 40, and each has a bore 48 to slidably receive the extensions 43, and a screw hole 49. Two blocks 50 each includes a bore 51 to slidably receive the extensions 43 of the handle 40, and a space 52 to receive the plate 42 which may be secured to the blocks 50 with one or more fasteners 53. Each of the blocks 50 includes one or more cavities 54, and a notch 55 communicating with one of the cavities 54.
  • One or more beams 60 are parallel to the handle 40, and each includes one end secured in the cavities 54 of the blocks 50, and one or more slots 61 formed by one or more projections 62, and a passage 63 communicating with the slots 61. Two caps 65 are secured to the extensions 43 of the handle 40 with such as fasteners 66, and each has one or more cavities 67 to receive the beams 60. The beams 60 may also be formed integral with the handle 40. The extensions 43 of the handle 40 may thus be extended between the beams 60, and preferably no wider than the beams 60, to allow the beams 60 and/or the extensions 43 of the handle 40 to be moved into the grooves 32 of the weights 31.
  • In operation, the beams 60 may be engaged into the grooves 32 of the weights 31 via the open top 33 (FIGS. 5 and 6). The projections 62 of the beams 60 are engaged between the weights 31, to position the weights 31 to the beams 60. The latches 47 are slidably engaged onto the extensions 43 of the handle 40, and are slidable in the channel 34 of the weight 31, and wider than the grooves 32 of the weights 31, to engage and latch the weights 31 to the beams 60 or to the extensions 43 of the handle 40.
  • Two rods 70 are secured to the latches 47 with such as threads 71. Two catches 72 are slidably engaged onto the rods 70 and biased to engage with the beams 60 by springs 73. The rods 70 are slidably engaged in the passage 63 of the beams 60, movable along the beams 60 or the extensions 43, to engage the latches 47 into the channels 34 of the required number of weights 31.
  • For example, as shown in FIG. 5, the latches 47 may be engaged into the channels 34 of all or four of the weights 31, such that all weights 31 may be latched to the handles 40. Similarly, only two of the weights 31 (FIG. 6) may be latched to the handles 40. When or after the latches 47 have been engaged into the channels 34 of the required number of weights 31, the catch 72 may be biased by the spring 73 to engage with the beam 60, to solidly secure the latches 47 and the selected number of weights 31 together.
  • As also shown in FIG. 6, the latches 47 have not been engaged into the channels 34 of the two outer weights 31, such that the beams 60 may be moved out of the two outer weights 31 when the beams 60 and the handle 40 are lifted away from the weights 31. The latches 47 may thus be moved along the extensions 43 of the handle 40 with the rods 70 to secure the required number of weights 31 to the end portions 41 or the extensions 43 of the handles 40.
  • The rods 70 may be engaged into the notches 55 of the blocks 50, to allow the latches 47 to be disengaged from the channels 34 of all of the weights 31, and thus to allow the handle 40 to be disengaged from all of the weights 31 when the handle 40 is lifted away from the weights 31, such that the users may also exercise with the handle 50 only.

Claims (10)

  1. A dumbbell comprising a handle (40), a plurality of weights (31) each including a channel (34) to slidably receive a latch (47), the latch (47) being slidably engaged onto the handle (40), slidably engageable into the channels (34) of a selected number of the weights (31), and fixable to the handle (40), to secure the selected number of the weights (31) to the handle (40),
    characterized in that
    the handle (40) includes at one end thereof an extension (43) extending through the channel (34), and the latch (47) has a bore (48) to slidably receive the extension (43) of the handle (40) and slidably engageable into the channels (34) of a selected number of the weights (31) to secure the selected number of the weights (31) to the handle (40).
  2. A dumbbell as claimed in claim 1, wherein each of the weights (31) includes a groove (32) communicating with the channel (34) to slidably receive the handle (40).
  3. A dumbbell as claimed in claim 2, wherein the grooves (32) of the weights (31) are narrower than the channel (34), and the latch (47) is wider than the grooves (32) of the weights (31).
  4. A dumbbell as claimed in claim 1, wherein a block (50) is secured to the handle (40), and at least one beam (60) is attached to the block (50) and thus secured to the handle (40).
  5. A dumbbell as claimed in claim 4, wherein the block (50) includes at least one cavity (54) to receive the beam (60).
  6. A dumbbell as claimed in claim 4, wherein the handle (40) includes a plate (42), and the block (50) includes a space (52) to receive the plate (42).
  7. A dumbbell as claimed in claim 4, wherein the extension of the handle (40)is parallel to the beam (60), and a cap (65) is secured to the handle (40) and has at least one cavity (67) to receive the beam (60).
  8. A dumbbell as claimed in claim 4, wherein the beam (60) includes a passage (63), and a rod (70) is secured to the latch (47) and slidably engaged in the passage (63) of the beam (60).
  9. A dumbbell as claimed in claim 8, wherein a catch (72) is engaged onto the rod (70), and a spring (73) biases the catch (72) to engage with the beam (60).
  10. A dumbbell as claimed in claim 1, wherein the handle (40) includes a passage (45) to slidably receive the latch (47).
