Abstract

The invention relates to a coupling mat for making brick mats by which the bricks can be mutually connected and in which with the help of a number of coupling mats brick mats having different brick bonds can be made. The coupling mat comprises hollow anchoring members being connected to one another by plastic thread or strips, in which said anchoring members protrude from the plane of the strips and said strips can be used with both upwardly and downwardly directed anchoring members. One anchoring member is used for every brick, however, where the mats should be coupled, they are designed in such a way that two anchoring members end up in a number of bricks.

Description

Coupling mat for brick bonds
The present application relates to a coupling mat made of plastic for mutually connecting e.g. concrete bricks to be poured or cast or bricks based on artificial resin, in which a certain movement of the individual bricks in relation to one another remains possible.
Such mats for mutually connecting bricks, tiles or concrete blocks are known per se in many forms . There is always much attention for the height at which the connect- ions should be provided, in which aspects like load, tilting point and strength of the connection to the brick, tile or block play a role. Then, it is a problem to mount the mat at the predetermined height and to keep it at that height during the pouring or casting of concrete or the pouring of another composition with e.g. an artificial resin.
The object of the invention is to prevent such problems and to provide a coupling mat which can be simply put into a mould to be filled up or poured full, which will be securely fixed within the stone and in which the extent of freedom of movement can be selected.
Accordingly, according to the invention it is provided for, that the coupling mat is formed by connecting portions connecting spaced-apart anchoring members to one another, the anchoring members protruding from the plane of the connecting portions.
Such a coupling mat has the advantage that it can be put on the bottom of a mould right away to be filled up or be poured full and that it does not require any efforts of keeping it at a predetermined way within the mould in a more or less troublesome way. Here, one can choose between a second and a first position of the coupling mat, that is, a first position in which the coupling mat with the anchoring members is on the bottom of the mould and a second position in which the anchoring members and the connecting portions will come to bear on the bottom of said mould. In both cases, the raised anchoring members provide an amply sufficient anchoring of the coupling mat in the hardened or cured bricks .
According to a further elaboration, it is provided for, that the anchoring members form a substantially hollow body having one or more passages to the outside. Thus, it is achieved that the mortar used for the bricks is able to thoroughly reach into the interior of an anchoring member and that a number of strong bridges with the mortar mass outside of the anchoring member are established.
Preferably, the anchoring member is formed by a first annular element situated in the plane of the connecting portions, said connecting portions connecting to the outside thereof, a second annular element or sleeve spaced from said first annular element and a number of connecting elements between first and second annular element or sleeve. The sleeve or the annular element of the anchoring member both form a particularly suitable connecting channel towards the interior of said anchoring member .
With a coupling mat placed in the second position, the connecting portions between the anchoring members will come to lie on the bottom plane of the mould and will not be embedded into the mortar. In relation to a coupling mat placed in the first position, this has the advantage that much more freedom of movement between the bricks will be provided at a given mutual spacing. This is especially practical, if brick mats are to be put on a foundation with irregularities or, which occurs more often, that a brick mat must be forced into a shape which deviates considerably of the shape in which it was made. One could think of e.g. rectangular brick mats which should be laid in an arch shape .
There, the connecting elements can be formed by plastic threads or plastic strips. The plastic threads will provide the largest possible freedom of movement of the bricks in relation to one another. However, this will not always be necessary so that the plastic strips are preferred, with which the brick mat, on laying it, can easily and immediat- ely be laid in the original form, the form as manufactured.
A further important feature is the way in which the connecting elements have been mounted between the anchoring members, in which basically, one starts from one anchoring member per brick. It is possible to connect said anchoring members to all adjacent anchoring members, producing a coupling mat having only triangular structures of connecting elements and anchoring members. Thus, a particularly stiff coupling mat is achieved, which is unnecessary and often undesirable as well. Furthermore, the manufacturing costs increase proportionally fast.
Depending on the brick bond applied in a brick mat, e.g. a half-brick bond, a fan bond or a circle bond, the connecting elements are arranged such that they follow the brick bond and have branches to the side tracks. A half- brick bond having parallel rows of bricks thus substantially yields a structure having quadrangles. With a fan bond in which the ends of fans merge into one another and smaller bricks are used too, one chooses a more economical structure of connecting elements in which e.g. even heptagonals can arise.
For process-technical reasons, such as e.g. the size of the injection mould, the coupling mats are executed in a size which is not too large. This means that in order to realize a certain standard size for a brick mat, the brick mat must be composed with a number of coupling mats.
Thus, the coupling mats are made in such a way, that two or more coupling mats can be laid against one another only after first rotating a subsequent brick mat across 180° in the plane of the coupling mat and then abutting it. Then, at least a number of anchoring members along the coupling mat edges will come to lie adjacent or against each other and will then be embedded in a brick in pairs.
Further, the coupling mats are designed for making brick mats which can be laid completely true in sequence. According to a further elaboration, it is provided for, that a brick mat manufactured with the coupling mats always has offsets or indentations in the brick bond at two opposite sides, such that an identical brick mat can be laid immediately following in parallel or with indentation, in which the specific brick bond continues in the subsequent brick mats.
In order to offer the possibility of working with more than one brick bond in a paving, additionally, coupling mats and therefore brick mats too are provided, forming a transition between two different brick bonds having movements or indentations on at least two opposite sides, in such a way that brick mats having different brick bonds can be laid immediately following in parallel or with indentation at said opposite sides.
Hereinafter, the invention is further explained by way of the example given in the drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 shows two coupling mats for a brick mat having a half-brick bond; Figs. 2A,B,C show in view and in perspective an anchoring member; Fig. 3 shows three coupling mats for a brick mat having a half-circle bond; Fig. 4 shows two coupling mats for a brick mat having a fan bond; Fig. 5 shows two coupling mats for a brick mat having a transition from a fan to a half-brick bond and Figs. 6A,B,C,D show four brick mats according to the configurations shown in the previous figures .

Figs. 2A,B,C show an anchoring member 2 in more detail with said connecting strips 3 connecting to an annular element 5, a sleeve 6 mounted at the opposite side and four bars 7 connecting annular element 5 and sleeve 6. The spaces between the bars 7, the annular element 5 and the sleeve 6 provide a passage to the mortar used for the bricks so that a proper anchoring can be obtained at all times.
In Fig. 3, three coupling mats 8, 8a, 8b are placed next to each other, in which a number of anchoring members along adjacent edges are again received in one brick. At the edges 9 and 11, said anchoring members are placed in such a way, that they can connect to one another, but that they can also be used for having bricks connect to one another in a straight line and being able to form a transition to a half- brick bond. The edges 12 are intended for obtaining a indented structure in the brick mat to which an identical brick mat can connect if this is rotated across 180° in relation to the first brick mat (see Fig. 6D) .
In Fig. 4, two coupling mats 13, 13a are shown, toge- ther forming the basis for a brick mat having a fan bond
(see Fig. 6B) . The edges 14 are for being able to form a transition to a half-brick bond, edges 16 can connect to one another again and edges 15, 17 provide for offsets in the brick mat in such a way that subsequent brick mats having this bond connect directly to one another.
In order to be able to switch to e.g. a half-brick bond at the sides 15, 17, starting pieces and end pieces are additionally provided. Fig. 5 shows the basis for this, with two coupling mats 18, 18a at the edges 19, 20, 21 forming a transition to a half-brick bond and of which the edges 21 provide for the coupling with two anchoring members for a number of bricks. It can easily be seen that a clearly different structure with connecting strips 3 and anchoring members 2 has been formed in the middle in longitudinal direction. This structure represents the transition to a fan bond. After the brick mat has been formed, it can be separated in two portions in longitudinal direction by cutting through the connecting strips on the intended positions. In this way, starting piece and end piece as illustrated in Fig. 6C are established, connecting at both sides of the brick mat having a fan bond as indicated in Fig. 6B .

1. Coupling mat made of plastic for mutually connecting e.g. concrete bricks to be poured or cast or bricks based on artificial resin, in which a certain movement of the individual bricks in relation to one another remains possible, characterized in. that the coupling mat is formed by connecting parts connecting spaced apart anchoring members to one another.
2. Coupling mat according to claim 1, characterized in that the anchoring members protrude from the plane of the connecting parts.
3. Coupling mat according to claims 1-2, characterized in that the anchoring members form a substantially hollow body having one or more passages to the outside.
4. Coupling mat according to claim 3 , characterized in that the anchoring member is formed by a first annular element situated in the plane of the connecting portions, said connecting portions connecting to the outside thereof, a second annular element or sleeve spaced from said first annular element and a number of connecting elements between first and second annular element or sleeve.
5. Coupling mat according to claims 1-4, characterized in that the connecting elements are substantially formed by plastic threads.
6. Coupling mat according to claims 1-4, characterized in that the connecting elements are substantially formed by plastic strips.
7. Coupling mat according to claim 6, characterized in that the width of the strips is at least three times larger than their thickness.
8. Coupling mat according to claims 1-7, characterized in that the anchoring members have a height of at least 25% of the height of the bricks.
9. Coupling mat according to claims 1-8, characterized in that the connecting elements and the anchoring members form combinations of polygons in the coupling mat.
10. Coupling mat according to claim 9, characterized in that the polygons substantially comprise tri- to heptangles.
11. Coupling mat according to claims 1-10, characterized in that the anchoring members have been put in patterns corresponding to a brick bond realized in a mould for cas- ting or pouring, and this in such a way that the anchoring members end up approximately in the middle of the bricks to be cast or poured.
12. Coupling mat according to claims 1-11, characterized in that one coupling mat or a number of coupling mats together form the basis for a brick mat.
13. Brick mat assembled with the help of one or more coupling mats according to claims 1-12, characterized in that it has offsets or indentations in the brick bond at two opposite sides, such that an identical brick mat can be laid immediately following in parallel or with indentation, in which the brick bond continues in the subsequent brick mats.

Brick mat assembled with the help of one or more coupling mats according to claims 1-12, characterized in that it has a transition between two different brick bonds having offsets or indentations on at least two opposite sides, in such a way that brick mats having different brick bonds can be laid immediately following in parallel or with indentation at said opposite sides.
