Description

HOUSING FOR RETRACTABLE NEEDLE WITH MEANS FOR DISINFECTING THE SKIN AT THE PUNCTURE SITE
The present invention relates to medical appliances, and more particularly to the area of retractable needles that are housed, together with an elastic pusher, in a usually cylindrical housing, which may be independent or may be part of a pen-type syringe for subcutaneous injections or for making punctures for the purpose of examining the blood.
For example, in an injection syringe, as is well known, when the syringe plunger is operated, a cartridge containing the liquid to be injected is pushed onto the needle and pushes the needle out of the above-described housing to make an injection. After this operation, the needle is withdrawn into the abovementioned cylindrical housing by the said elastic striker, which usually consists of a spring or suchlike member.
The same operation, with other mechanisms and component parts, is performed with the above-described puncture syringes .
The use of retractable needles, as is known to those skilled in the art, avoids the risk of inadvertent needle sticks and the associated risks, and reduces the emotional tension of the person receiving the injection, which would be aggravated by the sight of a fixed needle.
It is important to bear in mind that retractable needles and the associated syringes are often used directly by patients who have to undergo long-term or indefinite therapies, such as insulin therapy.
These patients often forget, or are unable, to disinfect the area of the epidermis where the injection is to be performed, so there is a risk of local infections .
To avoid this problem and its potential harmful effects on the patient's health, the inventor of the present invention has devised a cylindrical housing for a retractable needle, in which there is applied to its surface that it is to be pressed against the skin a layer of absorbent material soaked with disinfectant and covered by a removable impermeable membrane to protect it over time.
To perform an injection, the said disinfectant-soaked layer must necessarily be pressed against the skin in the area where the needle is to be inserted. This guarantees that this area is disinfected, more especially if facilitated and enhanced by local rubbing by the patient.
The point of the local rubbing is also to disinfect that area of the skin which is immediately opposite the centre of the said disinfectant-containing layer, in cases in which there is a hole in this layer for the needle to pass through.
When using a housing according to the invention there is therefore almost absolute certainty that the area of the skin where the injection is performed is disinfected, thereby fulfilling the result which the inventor set out to achieve.
The subject of the present invention is therefore a housing as described in the appended Claim 1.
A description will now be given of two preferred illustrative embodiments of the housing of the invention, selected from the various embodiments open to a person skilled in the art when putting into practice the teachings of the abovementioned Claim 1. This description will also make reference to the appended drawings, which show:
- in Figure 1 a longitudinal section through a housing according to the invention in the case in which it coincides with the end part of a pen-type syringe for subcutaneous injections; in Figure 2 a longitudinal section through another housing according to the invention in the case in which it is an independent part housed in the end part of a syringe capable of containing it in the interior of its end part; and - in Figure 3 an end view of that part of the housing seen in Fig. 2 which is adjacent to the interior of a syringe, fitted with a membrane with predefined breakage lines.
Turning first to Figure 1, this shows a cylindrically shaped housing 1 consisting of the end part 3t of a "pen" type syringe 3 for subcutaneous injections, which contains in its interior a retractable needle 2 with the associated elastic return means 22 (a simple spring in the case depicted).
The abovementioned housing ends in an end wall 4 with a central hole 5 for the needle 2 to pass through, to the outer face 4e of which there is applied, by adhesives or other methods of known type, a layer 7 of absorbent material, preferably of spongy type to give it a certain softness, and impregnated with one of the numerous types of disinfectant in the fluid or liquid state.
This layer 7 is completely covered by an impermeable membrane 6 cut for example from aluminium foil, and attached to the housing 1 by adhesives, heat-welding or other such system. Projecting from this membrane 6 is a tab 6e that can be used to pull the said membrane 6 off when the syringe 3 is to be used to make an injection by pressing onto the retractable needle 2 a cartridge 10 containing the liquid 12 to be injected.
The said layer 7 preferably itself has a hole 7f for the retractable needle 2 to pass through.
After the membrane 6 has been removed, the end wall 4 and consequently the abovementioned layer 7 is placed against the area of the skin where the needle is to penetrate, thus achieving the result that the mere contact, especially if accompanied by slight local rubbing, results in disinfection of the said area such as to reduce the risk of infection and the harmful consequences which can be occasioned thereby.
Another illustrative embodiment of a housing 11 according to the invention, with identical aims and functions, is drawn in Figure 2. In this case the housing 11 of the invention, containing in its interior a retractable needle 2 with its elastic return means 22, forms an independent part and is inserted in the open end part 13t of a pen-type syringe 13. (This system was devised by the same inventor, and is disclosed in another Swiss patent application) .
As before, the cylindrical housing 11 has an end wall 4 containing a hole 5, to the outer face 4e of which there is applied, in exactly the same way as described with respect to the previous example, a layer 7 impregnated with disinfectant and covered by a membrane 7, which seals it to maintain its effectiveness over time, and this membrane can be pulled off using a tab 7e projecting from it.
All the observations made with respect to the previous example also apply in this case. The only difference is that on the rear end 11s of the housing 11 adjacent to the interior of the syringe 13 is another impermeable membrane 26 to prevent the ingress of air and potential air-borne germs into the housing 11 when the latter is not contained in a syringe, and is therefore exposed to this risk.
This additional membrane 26 comprises (as can be seen in Fig. 3) a number of predefined breakage lines Li so that it can be torn by the cartridge 10 containing the liquid 12 to be injected when the cartridge is pressed against it in the course of an injection.
As before, when using a housing 11 according to the invention, that area of the cutis where an injection is to be carried out is disinfected by acting as described in the previous case. The same applies to the type of instrument already mentioned (not illustrated) for making simple punctures, the only difference being that, because such instruments are usually used by doctors or specialist personnel, there is almost no risk of disinfection not being done or being done inadequately, and the housing of the invention chiefly has the (not insignificant) advantage of simplifying and reducing the operations of disinfection, which no longer require the use of cotton wool having to be soaked in disinfectant.
It will be obvious that both the shape and the nature of the disinfectant-impregnated layer and of the membranes described above can be modified to suit design requirements and can differ from those illustrated and described herein.
