Definitions
- the present invention relates to an electrode for a plasma torch formed by a electrode body comprising a recess within which is fixed an emissive insert hafnium and zirconium, and plasma torch comprising it.
- a plasma cutting device capable of implementing such a method comprises generally a plasma cutting torch comprising an arc ejection nozzle plasma to the workpiece to be cut, a cathode electrode placed at a distance from the nozzle and coaxially thereto, a supply of plasma gas, such as air compressed, oxygen or any other mixture of gases comprising at least one oxidizing gas, and a means of distributing the plasma gas in the volume separating the electrode from the nozzle, also called plasma chamber.
- plasma gas such as air compressed, oxygen or any other mixture of gases comprising at least one oxidizing gas
- the work piece forms the anode, the cathode and the anode being connected to the terminals of a current generator.
- the electrode which is typically made of copper or a alloy of copper
- Zirconium is less expensive than hafnium but less good resistance to erosion of the plasma arc at high temperature.
- pure hafnium has the best resistance to erosion of the plasma arc but is very expensive, in particular because in order to obtain pure hafnium, it is necessary to proceed to its "refining" during its manufacture, so as to remove the impurities which contaminate this material.
- electrodes with an insert emissive in pure hafnium wear out in a few hours, typically between 2 and 4 hours, when used in a plasma cutting torch.
- Electrodes with an emissive insert of hafnium or zirconium therefore constitute a consumable element of the torch which must be replaced often, which increases the cost overall process and poses problems at the industrial level because, to carry out the replacement of the electrode, it is necessary to stop the installation and disassemble the part front of the torch.
- the problem to be solved is then to propose an emissive insert for an electrode having a lifespan close to that of electrodes with pure hafnium insert but at a price of comes back lower.
- the solution of the invention is then an emissive insert for an electrode formed of an alloy containing hafnium and zirconium.
- the invention also relates to an electrode for plasma torch formed of an electrode body comprising a recess in which an insert is fixed emissive according to the invention, preferably a copper or copper alloy electrode, as well as a plasma torch comprising such an electrode, preferably a torch for plasma cutting of a steel part, in particular of structural steel.
- Figure 1 is a diagram, a longitudinal sectional view, of a body electrode 1 solid mass consisting of an electrode body 2, of generally axisymmetric shape in a cup with blind bottom, comprising, at its upper or upstream part, a thread 4 to allow a assembly by screwing of the electrode 1 on a torch body; at its bottom or active part, a 6 'bore to receive, by force fitting, by crimping and / or by brazing, an emissive insert 3 made of a hafnium-zirconium alloy according to the invention; and in its middle part 5, a polygonal external shape, in particular hexagonal, for allow the taking of a suitable wrench to perform the screwing and tightening of the electrode 1 on its support in the torch body.
- the electrode 1 consists of an alloyed copper of cupro-tellurium type having a content of tellurium of about 0.3 to 0.7%, or cupro-chromium-zirconium, the rest being essentially copper and possibly unavoidable impurities.
- FIG. 2 represents, for its part, an electrode 1 with high mechanical resistance of general shape similar to that of FIG. 1 (the similar or identical parts bear the same references) comprising, in its middle part 5, an external prismatic shape or semi-prismatic allowing the taking of a key shaped suitable for screwing and blocking of electrode 1 on its support in the torch body.
- a groove 7, intended to receive an O-ring seal, is made between the thread 4 and a surface 8 forming the assembly stop.
- Such an electrode has a high thermal resistance because the use of copper Cupro-chrome type ally for the production of electrode 1 allows its integrity to be preserved geometric, in particular in the vicinity of the emissive insert 3, that is to say without local fusion, despite a high temperature of the active end carrying the insert 3.
- the insert 3 fixed in the electrodes 1 is made of an alloy hafnium zirconium.
- the emissive insert 3 according to the invention must be made of an alloy of hafnium and zirconium.
- hafnium to which a proportion by weight is added.
- desired zirconium so as to obtain an Hf-Zr alloy in the proportions of the invention, that is to say preferably from 96 to 99% by weight of hafnium, from 0.5 to 3.5% of zirconium and inevitable impurities for the rest (about 0.5%), advantageously from 98.08 to 98.2% by weight of hafnium, from 1.7 to 1.82% of zirconium and impurities inevitable for the rest (0.027 to 0.1%).
- the insert 3 preferably has a generally cylindrical shape and is fixed to the body electrode by crimping or the like.
- An OCP 150 plasma cutting torch marketed by LA SOUDURE AUTOGENE FRANCAISE has been fitted with an alloyed copper electrode, such as a electrode according to FIG. 1 or 2, provided with a hafnium / zirconium alloy insert according to the invention (approx. 98.1% by weight of Hf + 1.82% by weight Zr + impurities the rest) and was then subjected to a succession of cutting sequences using oxygen as as cutting gas until extreme wear of the insert and / or the electrode.
- the material to be worked is a 10 mm structural steel plate thick.
- the intensity of the cutting current is 120 amperes.
