Description

POURING SPOUT WITH AUTOMATIC OPENING FEATURE
The present invention relates to a pouring spout device for packaging and in particular to an automatic opening feature of a pouring spout device for a liquid carrying package.
Pouring spout devices that have an automatic opening feature may be used for packages and containers for pourable food products. These types of pouring spout devices comprise a reclosable cap and a spout fitment affixed to the package. The automatic opening feature comprises a cam feature formed on the inside of the reclosable cap and a hinged flap formed with a cam follower. The hinged flap is disposed at a lower edge of the inner opening of the spout fitment. The pouring device may be attached to the outer surface of the package adjacent to a weakened area of the package or adjacent to a film sealing a hole in the package. Such pouring spout devices are disclosed in the published French patent application no. FR2766464.
Another prior art document that describes a similar type of pouring spout device with an automatic opening feature is published European patent application no. EP 1127798, in the name of Rexam Medical Packaging Inc. In this document a spout fitment comprises a cam follower that has a triangular shape and extends upward from a hinged flap. The spout fitment defines a pouring zone and the hinged flap is disposed at a lower edge of the inner opening of the spout fitment. A spiral cam extends from the inner surface of a reclosable cap. Upon opening of the cap the cam follower slides along the spiral cam so causing the flap to rotate downwardly about the hinge. The flap is held in an open position by a number of projections. We have found that with some auto-opening pouring spout devices, when the flap is in the open position, the flap is still substantially inline with the pouring zone such that the flap obstructs the free flow of liquid through the pouring zone. The size of the effective pouring aperture is therefore reduced.
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided an auto-opening pouring device for a container, the pouring device comprising a reclosable closure formed with a cam surface, and a spout fitment comprising a tubular section, a pivotable opening element comprising a cam follower and a piercing portion, the pivotable opening element being attached to the tubular section by a hinge and the piercing portion being disposed radially from the pivot axis of the hinge, the arrangement being such that in use the piercing portion of the opening element is initially disposed adjacent a weakened region of a container and the hinge is distant from the weakened region, and as the closure is unscrewed the piercing portion is pivoted about the hinge and breaks through the weakened region.
For a given cam geometry the piercing portion is pivoted by a greater angle about the hinge by having the piercing portion disposed radially distant from the hinge, such that the piercing portion is rotated by a greater angle such that the effective pouring aperture of the pouring device is improved. Also, in the open position the piercing portion is preferably disposed laterally from the pouring aperture by having the piercing portion disposed radially distant from the hinge and is preferably disposed laterally further from the central axis of pouring aperture.
The tubular section preferably comprises an inner opening and an outer opening, the hinge being distant from the inner opening, the arrangement being such that in use the piercing portion of the opening element is initially disposed within the inner opening.
The piercing portion is preferably formed with a force concentrating member.
The pivotable opening element preferably comprises an intermediate portion that connects the piercing portion to the hinge.
The intermediate portion preferably extends at an angle from an end of the piercing portion.
The intermediate portion preferably extends along one edge of the cam follower.
The hinge is preferably attached to one end of the intermediate portion on the cam follower.
The cam is preferably a spiral cam.
The reclosable closure comprises a tubular wall enclosed at one end by an end wall and preferably the cam extends from the common end region in a direction away from the end wall.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a spout fitment for an auto-opening pouring device according to the first aspect of the present invention.
The skilled person in the art should appreciate that the reclosable closure may be formed with the cam follower and the spout fitment may comprise the cam surface. According to a third aspect of the present invention there is provided an auto-opening pouring device for a container, the pouring device comprising a reclosable closure formed with a cam follower, and a spout fitment comprising a tubular section and a pivotable opening element comprising a cam surface and a piercing portion, the pivotable opening element being attached to the tubular section by a hinge and the piercing portion being disposed radially from the pivot axis of the hinge, the arrangement being such that in use the piercing portion of the opening element is initially disposed adjacent a weakened region of a container and the hinge is distant from the weakened region, and as the closure is unscrewed the piercing portion is pivoted about the hinge and breaks through the weakened region.
The present invention may include any combination of the features or limitations referred to herein.
The present invention may be carried into practice in various ways, but an embodiment will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a first isometric view of a known reclosable closure and shows a part cut away region;
Figure 2 is a second isometric view of the reclosable closure shown in Figure 1 ;
Figure 3 is an isometric view of the top of a known spout fitment ;
Figure 4 is an isometric view of the bottom of the spout fitment shown in Figure 3; Figure 5 is a plan view of the spout fitment shown in Figures 3 and 4;
Figure 6 is a bottom view of the spout fitment shown in Figures 3 to 5;
Figure 7 is a cross section view through W-W shown in Figure 5;
Figure 8 is a cross section view of the spout fitment shown in Figure 7 and a partial view of the cam element of the closure shown in Figures 1 and 2; and
Figure 9 is a cross section of a spout fitment according to the present invention and a partial view of a cam element of a closure .
Referring to the Figures 1 to 8, a known pouring spout device comprises a reclosable closure 2 (shown in Figures 1 and 2) and a spout fitment 4 (shown in Figures 3 to 7) .
The closure 2 comprises a tubular side wall 3 that is enclosed at one end by an end wall 5. The tubular side wall 3 is shown partially cut away to improve the view of the inner elements of the closure 2. The side wall 3 is formed with an internal thread 6. There is a cam 8 formed on the inner surface of the end wall 5 and a second cam 10 disposed radially outermost of the cam 8.
The cam 8 is a spiral shape and comprises a sloping cam surface 11 that extends from a end region 12 in an anticlockwise direction upwardly away from the end wall 5 towards a central arcuate pillar 13. A tamper evident element 16 comprises an arcuate section 18 frangibly attached to the side wall 3 by three nibs 20. The arcuate section 18 is formed with two spikes 22.
The spout fitment 4 comprises a planar base 29, a tubular side wall 24 formed with an outer opening 21, an inner opening 25 and an opening element in the form of a disc-shaped flap 26 disposed at the inner opening 25 of the fitment 4 and attached thereto by a hinge 28. In a closed arrangement there is an arcuate gap 30 that separates a substantial part of the flap 26 from the side wall 24 so allowing the flap 26 to pivot about the hinge 28. A triangular cam follower 32 extends from the upper surface of the flap 26 and a cutting part 34 extends from the lower surface of the flap 26. The base 29 comprises an annular portion 36 that extends partially around the lower end of the side wall 24 and a flange portion 38 formed with two holes 40 adapted to receive the spikes 22 of the tamper evident element 16. The tubular side wall 24 is formed with an external thread 42 adapted to correspond with the internal thread 6 of the closure 2.
In use the base 29 of the spout fitment 4 is attached to a container, the flap 26 being disposed adjacent a weakened region of the container. The reclosable closure 2 is placed onto the spout fitment 4 and the spikes 22 are received by and held within the holes 40. In the closed state the upper portion of the cam follower 32 is disposed at the end region 12. When the closure 2 is unscrewed from the spout fitment 4 for the first time the frangible nibs 20 are broken so leaving the arcuate section 18 still attached to the flange portion 38. As the closure 2 is unscrewed from the spout fitment 4 the cam follower 32 travels along the cam surface 11 of the cam 8 in a direction 50. As the cam follower 32 travels along the cam surface 11 the flap 26 is rotated about the hinge 28 due to the steep incline of the cam surface 11 and the incline of the cam follower 32. As the flap 26 rotates the cutting part 34 is forced through the weakened region of the container. This method of piercing a container is known to the skilled person in the art and is described in the published European patent application no. EP 1127798.
With reference to Figure 8, the hinged flap 26 is in a maximum open position. However, the flap 26 is still substantially obstructing the pouring zone defined by the inner opening 25 of the fitment 4. The spiral cam 8 has descended into the spout fitment 4 by a distance 'X' from the edge of the outer opening 21 and the flap 26 has only been removed from the pouring zone by a distance 'Y' . The flap 26 is still substantially obstructing the pouring aperture of the pouring zone.
With reference to Figure 9, there is shown a spout fitment 60 according to the present invention. The spout fitment 60 comprises many features that are substantially similar to the spout fitment 4 as herein before described with reference to Figures 1 to 8 and the same reference numbers have been used to indicate such features. However, the spout fitment 60 comprises a hinge 66 and a pivotable opening element 62 comprising a piercing portion 64. The pivotable opening element 62 is attached to the tubular section 24 of the spout fitment 60 by the hinge 66. The piercing portion 64 is disposed radially from the pivot axis of the hinge 66 by an intermediate portion 70.
The piercing portion 64 is substantially disc-shaped. The intermediate portion 70 extends from one end of the piercing portion 64 at an angle from the plane of the piercing portion 64. The intermediate portion 70 extends from the piercing portion 64 partially along the cam follower 32 to the hinge 66. The hinge 66 is attached to the radially innermost surface of the tubular section 24 via a spigot 68 that extends radially inwardly therefrom. The hinge 66 is located between the inner opening 25 and the outer opening 21 of the tubular section 24. The hinge 66 is distant from the inner opening 25.
Figure 9 shows the spiral cam 8 descended into the spout fitment 60 by a distance 'X' from the edge of an outer opening 21 , which is equal to the distance 'X' shown in Figure 8. However, with the spout fitment 60 the piercing portion 64 of the flap 62 has pivoted by a greater angle than the flap 26 shown in Figure 8 and the piercing portion 64 has been removed from the pouring zone by a distance 'Z' . The distance 'Z' is greater than the distance 'Y' .
The skilled person in the art will appreciate that during the opening operation the piercing portion 26 will pivot through a greater angle for a given distance 'X' of descent of the cam 8 because the piercing portion 64 is disposed radially from the axis of rotation of the hinge 66. The greater radial distance the piercing portion 64 is from the axis of rotation of hinge 66, the greater the angle of rotation for a given distance of descent 'X' of the cam 8. The greater the angle of rotation of the piercing portion 64 the larger the effective pouring aperture of the pouring zone. In the open position the piercing portion 64 is disposed laterally from the central axis 67 of the tubular section 24.
The skilled person in the art should appreciate that the reclosable closure may be formed with the cam follower and the spout fitment may comprise the cam surface.
