Abstract

Dans un mode de réalisation de l'invention, un commutateur de stockage présente un degré élevé d'échelonnabilité qui permet la création d'un SAN facile à déployer et pouvant être géré à partir d'un centre. En outre, ce commutateur de stockage permet également le déploiement d'une infrastructure mondiale et, partant, de disposer des ressources du SAN telles que les dispositifs de stockage dans n'importe quel point du globe. De plus, ce commutateur de stockage permet un SAN à protocoles multiples, p. ex. celui qui permet iSCSI ou Fibre Channel, et traite les paquets de données sans ralentissement ('wire speed'). Pour faciliter davantage le traitement sans ralentissement, on a muni le commutateur de l'invention d'une 'intelligence' répartie entre toutes ses cartes de ligne lui permettant de classer les paquets en paquets de données et paquets de contrôle et remplit les fonctions de virtualisation et celles de traduction de protocole. Un commutateur de l'invention fournit en outre des services de stockage sans serveur tels que la création de miroirs, le dépistage sélectif et la réplication.
