Description
METHOD FOR PREPARING ANIMAL PLASMA POWDER AND ANIMAL FEED THUS OBTAINED
The present invention relates to a method for preparing animal plasma powder by starting from treated animal blood and converting said blood into blood plasma and drying it. The invention furthermore relates to a method for preparing animal feed, in which the usual components of the feed are mixed with an active component. The invention also relates to the animal feed thus obtained. A method for preparing animal plasma powder and incorporating the same into nutritious substances is known from US patent No 6,004,576. It has become apparent that it is possible to stimulate the health and the growth of animals by adding spray-dried animal plasma, generally obtained from pigs, to animal feed. This leads in particular to an improved ingestion of feed and a reduction in the occurrence of the so-called "post-weaning diarrhoea", a form of diarrhoea which occurs directly after weaning (hereinafter abbreviated PWD). Consequently it is one of the objectives of the invention to alleviate the seriousness of the PWD disorder, which is caused as such by a bacterial infection. The PWD disorder leads to significant losses within the agrarian sector in question.
The method according to the present invention is characterized in that the treatment of the blood takes place by immunising the animal with pathogens for the animal in question and/or. components there- of. As a result of said immunisation according to the invention, hyperim- mune blood plasma is obtained.
Furthermore according to the invention, a method for stimulating the health and the growith of animals is obtained by feeding the animals with a feed containing spray-dried plasma powder, which method is characterized in that the animals are fed with an animal feed obtained by using a method as defined in claims 6 - 8.
Research carried out by the applicant has shown that the use of the method according to the present invention not only leads to an improved ingestion of feed and an improved health of the animals, in particular of the (sucking) pigs, as well as to a reduction as regards the occurrence of diarrhoea among sucking pigs after weaning (PWD), but also that the sucking pigs in question secrete fewer diarrhoea-causing bacteria, mainly E. col i bacteria, in their excrements, and that as a result less infection occurs in the group of which the sucking pigs in question form part. Thus, the use of the method according to the present invention not only alleviates the seriousness of the PWD disorder, but it also reduces the extent to which said disorder is spread.
Within the framework of the present invention the expression "spray-dried hyperimmune porcine plasma powder" is understood to mean spray-dried powder from blood plasma from immunised pigs. The immunised pigs may be immunised with various pathogenic substances or micro-organisms, but in particular with a vaccine containing the so-called F4- factor and/or the heat-unstable toxin (LT) .
According to a preferred application of the present method, the sucking pigs are fed with a feed which contains 1-15 wt.%, preferably 5-15 wt.%, of spray-dried hyperimmune porcine plasma powder.
The present invention also relates to an animal feed containing spray-dried plasma board, in which the animal feed contains spray-dried hyperimmune (porcine) plasma powder. The animal feed may be intended for various animal species, for example for cows, pigs, sheep, poultry and the like, which are important for the agrarian sector. The blood plasma may have been obtained from animals, in particular from pigs that have been immunised with pathogenic substances or micro-organisms for the animal species in question, but also with the aforesaid pathogenic substances or microorganisms for pigs. According to a preferred embodiment said animal feed is pig feed, which contains 1-15 wt.%, preferably 5-15 wt.%, of spray-dried
hyperimmune pig plasma powder. Experimental research carried out by the applicant shows that satisfactory results are obtained by using the preferred pig feed.
The present invention also relates to a method for prepa- ring pig feed, in which porcine plasma powder is dried, preferably spray- dried, and processed together with the other components for said feed. In accordance with the method according to the present invention, hyperimmune porcine plasma powder is used, and said spray-drying step is carried out in such a manner that maximally 25% of the anti-E coli activity of the hyperimmune plasma is lost. Research carried out by the applicant showed that the biological activity of the animal feed containing spray- dried hyperimmune porcine plasma powder is influenced most by the step of spray-drying. The other treatments, for example the processing into pellets, do not lead to any appreciable loss of the biological activity. According to an especially preferred embodiment, the spray- dried hyperimmune porcine plasma powder contains a titre of 1:500 anti-LT antibodies. The so-called heat-unstable toxin (LT), which is related to the cholera toxin (CT) , is an important cause of all kinds of intestinal disorders. The invention will be explained in more detail hereinafter by means of the following examples. Example I
Animals such as pigs or cows are immunised by administering pathogenic substances, viz. F4-factor, using a method which is known to those skilled in this field. The blood from said ante-mortem and post-, mortem approved, immunised animals is collected in a hygienic manner at a slaughterhouse. The red blood cells are separated from the so-called buffy-coat and other plasma fractions by centrifuging. The plasma fraction and the buffy-coat can be concentrated by means of separation tech- niques such as ultrafiltration, microfiltration, chromatography or precipitation. Also other techniques may be used for removing undesirable
substances (as mentioned in EP-B-0438 196) before a fraction is stabilised by carrying out a drying step, such as spray-drying or freeze-drying. The equipment that is used meets the hygienic requirements that apply in the foodstuffs industry and/or the pharmaceutical industry. 8 kg of the immunised, dried blood plasma thus obtained is added to 100 kg of a usual animal feed and mixed therewith. The animal feed contains as its main components 48 wt.% barley, 28 wt.% wheat, 7 wt.% soybean flour, 6% lactose, 4% fat, with the remainder including a ino acids, calcium phosphate, salt and molasses. The pel leti sing step is carried out at a supply temperature of 30 °C. a discharge temperature of about 60 °C and a rate of 200 kg/hour, so that pellets having a diameter of 3.2 mm are obtained. Example II The method of example I is used, with the immunisation step being carried out with a vaccine containing the heat-unstable toxin (LT) .
