Abstract

The outlet (5) of the milk-collection funnel (4) of a diaphragm breast-pump is angled out of axial alignment with the breast-receiving bell (7) of the funnel (4), and is rotatable coaxially within an input socket (6) to the pump body (1), to enable adjustment of the funnel-orientation relative to the pump body (1) for user-comfort. The funnel-outlet (5) is retained detachably within the socket (6) with air and liquid sealing by a chamfered ring (21), and a hand-operable lever (3) of the pump is hinged detachably to the body (1). The pump-diaphragm (12) is retained interlinked with the lever (3) so as to be withdrawn with it when the lever (3) is unclipped from its hinge (13) for cleaning.

Description

BREAST PUMP
This invention relates to breast pumps.
According to the present invention there is provided a breast pump having a funnel with a convergent bell- portion for placing on the breast over the nipple, wherein a tubular outlet of the funnel leading from the bell-portion is angled out of axial alignment with said bell-portion, and is coupled via a tubular inlet to a source of suction for drawing off expressed milk from the funnel, and wherein the outlet is axially aligned with the inlet and is selectively adjustable angularly relative to the inlet about their mutually aligned axes for varying the orientation of the funnel with respect to said source.
The breast pump according to the invention has the advantage that the funnel can be adjusted to take up a variety of orientations to suit the woman concerned in finding a comfortable position for holding and operating the pump. In this regard, the angle of axial misalignment between the tubular outlet and the bell- portion may conveniently be within the range 20 to 40 degrees, and may be specifically substantially 30 degrees.
The tubular outlet of the breast pump according to the invention may extend coaxially within the tubular inlet and may be a selectively-releasable fit therein to facilitate cleaning.
The source of suction may be a hand-operated diaphragm pump, and for convenience in disassembly of the breast pump for cleaning the hand-lever of the pump may be intercoupled with the pump-diaphragm such that the diaphragm is withdrawn as one with the hand-lever when the hand-lever is detached from the body of the pump.
A breast pump according to invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figures 1 to 3 are, respectively, a side elevation, a plan and a rear elevation of the breast pump according to the invention;
Figure 4 is a sectional perspective view of the breast pump with the collection bottle of the pump omitted;
Figure 5 is a sectional side elevation of the breast pump, the section being taken on the line V-V of Figure 3;
Figure 6 to 9 are, respectively, illustrative of details of features of the breast pump to enlarged scale;
Figure 10 is a perspective view of the breast pump showing part of it in exploded form; and
Figures 11 to 13 are illustrative of successive stages during manufacture of part of the breast pump.
Referring to Figures 1 to 3 , the breast pump has a plastics body 1 that screws onto a bottle 2 for collecting expressed milk, and a pivoted lever 3 for pumping the milk from the breast for collection. More particularly, a funnel 4 for placing on the breast over the nipple, is coupled by its output spigot-tube 5 into a tubular socket 6 of the body 1, and operation of the lever 3 creates suction that draws the milk into the body
1 to pass into the bottle 2. The output tube 5, which is angled out of axial alignment (by some 30 degrees) with the bell-portion 7 of the funnel 4, is rotatable coaxially within the socket 6. Thus, the funnel 4 can be adjusted selectively to take up a variety of different orientations with respect to the body 1 to suit the woman concerned in finding a comfortable position for holding and operating the pump.
A stand 8 is provided for convenient retention of the assembled breast pump when it is not being used for the expression of milk. The bottle 2 fits snugly into the stand 8 so that the whole assembly of pump is held securely upright.
Referring now more particularly to Figures 4 and 5, the funnel 4 has a silicone rubber insert 10 to provide cushioning for the breast received in the bell-portion 7. The bell-portion 7 is dimpled externally so as form raised elements 11 on its inside surface that serve to space the insert 10 away from that surface and thereby enhance the cushioning effect and comfort during pump operation.
Once the breast has been inserted comfortably within the funnel 4, operation of the pump is carried out by holding the body 1 in the palm of the hand with the fingers of that hand grasping the lever 3. Closing the fingers on the lever 3 draws it in towards the body 1 against the resilient bias of a diaphragm 12. More particularly, the lever 3, which clips onto the body 1 in a hinge 13 (illustrated more clearly in Figure 6) , has a bowl- portion 14, and the diaphragm 12 has a central knob-part 15 that is coupled to the portion 14 (illustrated more clearly in Figure 7) . Thus, as the lever 3 is pulled in, the diaphragm 12 is lifted from its seating 16 within a chamber 17. A one-way valve 18 (illustrated more clearly in Figure 8) located in the bottom of the chamber 17 for opening into the bottle 2, closes in response to the pressure drop created by the lifting of the diaphragm 12. This leaves the chamber 17 open only to the interior of the funnel 4 via the tube 5 and socket 6, so that milk is thereby expressed and drawn into the chamber 17. Once grip on the lever 3 is released to allow the diaphragm 12 to close onto its seating 16, the one-way valve 18 opens to allow the milk to pass into the bottle 2. The outlet- side of the valve 18 is surrounded by an annular skirt 19 for directing the milk into the bottle 2 without undue splashing, and displaced air can leave the bottle 2 via interruptions in the screw-thread 20 of the body 1 (Figure 4) .
Repeated operation of the lever 3, pulling and releasing it sequentially, draws more milk from the funnel 4 for collection. Once sufficient milk has been collected, the bottle is unscrewed from the body 1, and the body can then be readily disassembled for washing and sterilisation.
As part of the disassembly, the tube 5 can be withdrawn from the socket 6 simply by pulling. In this regard, and as illustrated by Figures 9 and 10, the rotational joint between the tube 5 and the socket 6 is effected by a resilient-plastics ring 21 that engages within a circumferential groove 22 of the tube 5. The ring 21 is chamfered so that with its generally wedge-section configuration it resists withdrawal of the tube 5 from the socket 6 more strongly than it resists its insertion, and moreover provides an air and liquid seal between the tube 5 and the socket 6.
The lever 3 is retained as one with the diaphragm 12, so that lifting it and unclipping the hinge 13 to remove the lever 3 from the body 1, also removes the diaphragm 12. This facilitates cleaning and simplifies re-assembly of the pump by avoiding the necessity for intercoupling the lever 3 and diaphragm 12. The intercoupling is carried out in manufacture as illustrated in Figures 11 to 13.
Referring to Figure 11, a narrow slot 23 in the bowl- portion 14 of the lever 3 extends part-way round the portion 14 from an aperture 24, and the lever 3 is v presented to the diaphragm 12 as illustrated, to enter the knob-part 15 into the aperture 24. The lever 3 is then swung down as illustrated in Figure 12, engaging and trapping the knob-part 15 within the slot 23 so as thereby to intercouple the diaphragm 12 with the lever 3. A plug 25 is now entered and sealed in the aperture 24 as illustrated in Figure 13, so that the knob-part 15 cannot be disengaged from the slot 23 and the lever 3 and diaphragm 12 remain as one.

Claims

Claims:
1. A breast pump having a funnel with a convergent bell-portion for placing on the breast over the nipple, wherein a tubular outlet of the funnel leading from the bell-portion is angled out of axial alignment with said bell-portion, and is coupled via a tubular inlet to a source of suction for drawing off expressed milk from the funnel, and wherein the outlet is axially aligned with the inlet and is selectively adjustable angularly relative to the inlet about their mutually aligned axes for varying the orientation of the funnel with respect to said source.
2. A breast pump according to Claim 1 wherein the tubular outlet extends coaxially within the tubular inlet and is a selectively-releasable fit therein.
3. A breast pump according to Claim 2 wherein the coupling between the tubular outlet and the tubular inlet involves a resilient ring that engages in a circumferential groove of the tubular inlet or outlet.
4. A breast pump according to Claim 3 wherein the groove is on the outside of the tubular outlet.
5. A breast pump according to Claim 3 or Claim 4 wherein the ring is of a generally wedge-section configuration for resisting withdrawal of the tubular outlet from within the tubular inlet.
6. A breast pump according to any one of Claims 1 to 5 wherein the angle of axial misalignment between the tubular outlet and the bell-portion is within the range 20 to 40 degrees.
7. A breast pump according to Claim 6 wherein said angle of misalignment is substantially 30 degrees.
8. A breast pump according to any one of Claims 1 to 7 wherein the source of suction is a hand-operated diaphragm pump.
9. A breast pump according to Claim 8 wherein the . tubular inlet opens into a body of the diaphragm pump, the diaphragm pump has a diaphragm that is lifted from its seating within a chamber of the body by actuation of a hand-lever, an outlet path from the chamber includes a one-way valve, lifting of the diaphragm creates suction closing the one-way valve and drawing expressed milk from the tubular inlet into said chamber, and release of the hand-lever from actuation returns the diaphragm to its seating such that the one-way valve opens to discharge milk from the chamber via said outlet path.
10. A breast pump according to Claim 9 wherein the hand- lever is mounted on said body via a selectively- releasable hinge, and is intercoupled with the diaphragm such that the diaphragm is withdrawn from the body as one with the hand-lever when the hand-lever is detached from the body by release of the hinge.
