Abstract
A rotary appliance, such as a fan, comprising a cast-plastic rotating part, such as a fan blade wheel, rotated by a drive apparatus, such as an electric motor, said blade wheel being provided with lightening holes especially to keep material concentrations sufficiently small. The lightening holes (16) are so arranged that they also serve as mounting holes for the balancing weights needed for balancing so that the balancing weights can be placed in the lightening holes, and/or as mounting holes for an accessory fitted on the appliance.
Description
ROTATING APPLIANCE WITH BALANCE HOLES
The present invention relates to a rotary appliance, such as an impeller, as defined in the preamble of claim 1 , comprising a rotating plastic component, such as a fan blade wheel, provided with lightening holes and rotated by a drive apparatus, such as an electric motor.
A plastic casting, such as a fan blade wheel cast from a plastic material, should not have material thicknesses exceeding a certain limit to avoid developing pro- cess-time stresses in the material. They can cause undesirable deformations and result in a structure having less than the designed strength. To prevent this, plastic castings are provided with lightening holes designed to keep material concentrations sufficiently small. After the casting, rotating parts, e.g. a fan blade wheel, have to be balanced. This can be accomplished by adding heavy material, e.g. lead, to the plastic body. At present, the material added for balancing is attached to the outside of the body, or suitable holes are first drilled for the weights, which are then added to the holes. At present, the attachment of accessories is likewise implemented using separate mounting holes or equivalent. This requires extra work and is therefore difficult and time-consuming.
The object of the present invention is to eliminate the drawbacks of prior art and to achieve a new type of lightening holes in a plastic rotating part comprised in a rotary appliance, such as an air impeller.
The invention is based on the idea of designing the lightening holes so that they are also applicable for use for the balancing weights needed for balancing, so that the balancing weights can be placed in the lightening holes. It is also possible to place e.g. an accessory needed for a fan blade wheel in the same slots if the impeller wheel is to be implemented as a model differing from the standard model, the accessory being used e.g. to change the air flow in a desired manner.
Details of the features characteristic of the lightening holes of the invention are presented in the claims below.
The primary advantage of the invention is that the lightening holes of the invention reduce the manufacturing costs and accelerate the manufacturing process
as the lightening holes can be used for balancing and for mounting accessories, which means that it is not necessary to make separate holes for these.
In the following, the invention will be described in detail by the aid of an exam- pie with reference to the attached drawings, wherein
Fig. 1 presents the blade wheel of an axial fan, provided with lightening holes according to the invention,
Fig. 2 presents a more detailed view of the lightening holes, and
Fig. 3 illustrates the attachment of an accessory to the blade wheel.
Fig. 1 presents a cast plastic blade wheel 10, which is fitted to the body of an axial fan by means of a shaft journal provided in it, the blade wheel being rotated by an electric motor. The blade wheel comprises fan blades 11 fitted between an inner cylindrical part 12 and a second outer cylindrical annular part 13, and a hole 14 for a shaft at the center.
The stator of the motor of the axial fan may be mounted on the housing around the perimeter of the impeller wheel 10 while the rotor is integrated with the impeller wheel so that it consists of permanent magnets fitted on the circumference of the outer annular part 13. The magnets may have a curved shape, so they can be placed in slots 15 provided at the very circumference of the blade wheel 10 and no plastic or other insulating material is needed between it and the stator.
The outer annular part 13 is provided with longitudinal lightening holes 16, which serve to ensure that material concentrations in the cast-plastic blade wheel remain sufficiently small. The lightening holes are so designed that they are also applicable for use for the balancing weights needed for balancing, so that the balancing weights can be placed in the lightening holes. These may have a depth almost equal to the thickness of the annular part 13 as in Fig. 2.
Likewise, an accessory 17 needed on the impeller blade wheel to change the air flow so that the axial fan becomes e.g. a mixed-flow fan can be fastened to the same holes by means of mounting pins provided in the accessory and fitted to the lightening holes 16.
It is obvious to the person skilled in the art that different embodiments of the invention are not limited to the example described above, but that they may be varied within the scope of the following claims. Thus, the invention can also be used in other rotary appliances in which the rotating part is shaped via a casting process in a mould.
Claims
1. Rotary appliance, such as a fan, comprising a cast-plastic rotating part (10), such as a fan blade wheel, rotated by a drive apparatus, such as an electric motor, said blade wheel being provided with lightening holes especially to keep material concentrations sufficiently small, characterized in that the lightening holes (16) are so arranged that they also serve as mounting holes for the balancing weights needed for balancing so that the balancing weights can be placed in the lightening holes, and/or as mounting holes for an accessory to be fitted on the appliance.
2. Lightening holes according to claim 1 , arranged in the longitudinal direction of the rotating part, characterized in that the lightening holes have a depth nearly equal to the thickness of the rotating part.
