Bisher wurden derartige Unterteile entweder als Graugußteile oder als gepreßte Aluminiumteile ausgeführt. Neuerdings geht der Trend aus Festigkeitsgründen hin zu geschmiedeten, einstückigen Stahlunterteilen. Das Stahl-Unterteil 1 besteht aus zwei geschmiedeten Hälften 2 und 3, die in der Trennebene 4 miteinander mittels Elektronenstrahl verschweißt sind. Es weist einen Schaft 5, Naben 6, Abstützungsbereiche 7 und einen Unterteilboden 8 auf.
