Definitions
- the invention relates to a method and a circuit arrangement for regulating extreme values, with which both the finding of an extreme value and the holding of this extreme value and thus the optimization of manipulated values in technical systems is made possible.
- a special application is in accelerator systems.
- the extreme value control in this application is equivalent to the term optimization, but the focus here is not only on finding the extreme value, but also on maintaining this value under the influence of drift phenomena or disturbances.
- the invention has for its object a method and a circuit arrangement to propose with which the extreme value of a size, often referred to as quality size, can be found and held even with very small actuating movements where the search loss can be kept constant by the search movements.
- a test signal preferably a binary pseudo random signal
- the test signals of the individual manipulated variables must not be correlated with one another.
- the amplitude of this test signal is regulated so that the resulting fluctuations in the quality signal adhere to a certain amplitude.
- the test signal regulated in this way is added to the current operating point of the manipulated variable and represents a manipulated variable of the system, the extreme value of which is to be sought and held.
- the differences between the individual sampling steps are formed from the resulting quality signal.
- the differences in the manipulated variable between these sampling steps are also formed. These differences are linked with a correlation operator, preferably with a polarity correlator.
- the result of this correlation operation is zero if there is no correlation and one if there is a correlation.
- the result of this correlation is integrated.
- the output signal of the integrator represents the new operating point of the manipulated variable under consideration. With this method, the manipulated value automatically runs to the point at which the quality signal assumes a maximum.
- the integration time constant is adapted between two specified limit values. The output signal of the correlation operator is used for this. If the amount of this output value is zero on average, the larger limit of the integration time constant in the integrator is used. If the value of the initial value of the correlation operator is on average one, the smaller limit value of the integration time constant is used.
- the integration time constant is interpolated in between. This leads to shorter search times if the manipulated variable continuously moves in the direction of the maximum of the quality size.
- This procedure can be used for a system with several manipulated variables.
- the procedural steps are carried out simultaneously for all manipulated variables, only the procedural steps of the test signal amplitude control are carried out individually and in succession for each manipulated variable. In deviation from this, it is also possible to carry out all process steps of the individual manipulated variables one after the other.
- Block 4 is the system to be optimized with the extreme value controller with its input variables y (also referred to as manipulated variables).
- a test signal generator 1.1 is connected to a test signal amplitude controller 2.1, the output of which is led via a summation element 3.1 to an input of the system 4 to be optimized.
- the output of the correlation operator 6.1 is connected via a difference generator 5a to several correlation operators 6 arranged in parallel, one for each manipulated variable.
- the output of the summation element 3.1 is connected to a further difference image 5b.1.
- the output of this difference generator is connected to the correlation operator 6.1 assigned to the manipulated variable.
- the output of the correlation operator is led to the summation element 3.1 via the integrator 7.1.
- the output of the correlation operator 6.1 is also passed via an adaptation element 8.1 to the second input of the integrator 7.1 and controls the integration time constant of the integrator 7.1.
- the system 4 to be optimized can have a plurality of inputs.
- the picture shows the special case with two manipulated variables. These further channels are constructed in the same way with blocks 1, 2, 3, 5b, 6, 7 and 8 lying in parallel.
- the test signal generator is a binary random or pseudo random generator with the output variables -1 and + 1.
- the amplifier 2 amplifies the input signal by the value m.
- the variable m is controlled by the amplifier in such a way that the associated effect of the manipulated value on the quality value of block 4 reaches a certain predetermined amplitude (test signal amplitude control).
- the test signal amplitude control represents an independent control circuit.
- the extreme value control and the test signal amplitude control are carried out alternately for a certain period of time or number of steps on the system 4 to be optimized, the extreme value control being able to be carried out simultaneously for all manipulated variables y. Instead, the test signal amplitude control is always carried out successively for all manipulated variables.
- the manipulated variable operating point y 1 0 is added to the associated test signal n 1 of the amplitude m 1 and the result is the manipulated variable y 1 , one of the manipulated variables of the system 4 to be optimized.
- the difference between the input variable of the current extreme value control step and the preceding extreme value control step is formed and output in blocks 5a and 5b.
- the correlation between the change in the quality signal x and the change in the respective manipulated variable y is established therein.
- a polarity correlator is used.
- the output signal of this polarity correlator can have the values +1 (same sign), 0 (one or both input variables equal to zero) and -1 (different sign).
- Block 7.1 is an integrator with the time constant T 1 .
- the manipulated variable operating point y 1 0 is acted upon by the binary test signal of the amplitude m 1 , which is regulated in the test signal amplitude controller 2.1. So-called search steps are carried out with the manipulated variable y 1 . The directions of these search steps are correlated with the differences in the quality value occurring in the polarity correlator 6.1. If the manipulated variable operating point is on an increasing branch of the quality signal, the polarity of the correlation result d 1 is equal to the direction of the increase in the quality characteristic.
- the signal 1 is always equal to +1 and at an operating point on the right side D from the signal extreme value 1 is always equal to -1. If the signal d 1 is now integrated in the integrator 7.1 and the integration result is used as the manipulated variable operating point y 1 0 , this method leads to the manipulated variable operating point y 1 0 running in the extreme value of the quality characteristic. If the manipulated variable lies exactly in the extreme value, then the signal d 1 is zero or changes to +1 and -1 frequently due to interference signals if the manipulated variable is very close to the extreme value.
- the amplitude of the test signal is controlled by the test signal amplitude control in block 2.1 in such a way that, in the described process, the search loss of the variable x with respect to this manipulated variable y 1 maintains a certain predeterminable value.
- No further details are given about the type of this control loop.
- the usual known means of control technology can be used for this. Since the amount of the quantity d 1 is exactly 0 or 1, the time constant T 1 of the integrator 7.1 represents the step size of the work steps when it is implemented as a time-discrete system. In a time-continuous system, this time constant is inversely proportional to the optimization speed.
- This integration time constant T 1 is adapted in block 8.1 in order on the one hand to obtain a higher search speed outside the optimum and on the other hand to obtain the greatest possible stability against disturbances in the optimum.
- the two extreme cases are assumed that on the one hand d 1 is always -1 or +1 and on the other hand d 1 is equally often -1 or +1 or exactly zero.
- These two states are separated by a moving average or a low-pass filter and rectified by an amount. If the state just described persists over a certain period of time (only +1 or -1 or alternating sign and the value zero), the rectified and filtered value reaches the value 1 (one of the two signs predominates strongly) or the value 0 ( alternating sign or zero).
- the time constant T 1 is set to a minimum value (high optimization speed). In the other case, that the rectified value is zero, this time constant is set to a maximum value (low optimization speed).
- the time constant is interpolated between these two extreme cases. For example, linear interpolation can be used. The process described so far effects extreme value control of a single manipulated variable. If, as shown in Figure 1, this procedure is used individually for each manipulated variable, but at the same time, the extreme value control is carried out in several dimensions. Only the quality value x is the same for all one-dimensional optimizations. All other values are determined individually for each manipulated variable.
- pseudo-random binary signal generators are used for the test signal generators 1. Compared to fixed, but uncorrelated frequencies for the test signal generators, this does not favor certain control variables, namely those with the higher test signal frequency, during the optimization.
- the search and optimization speed is therefore the same over a longer period for all manipulated variables. If you consider a single manipulated variable in this multi-dimensional search, the simultaneous extreme value control of all other manipulated variables acts as a source of interference. However, the effect of the test signal of this size is filtered out of the interference by the correlation operation.
- the more manipulated variables to be optimized at the same time the greater the amplitude of this interference signal.
- the optimization speed therefore decreases with the number of manipulated variables to be optimized.
- the test signal amplitude is regulated to the width of the optimal area.
- the search losses that occur thus remain constant. Since not only the test signal but the sum of the test signal and the manipulated variable operating point is used for the correlation, the working movement of the manipulated variable operating point no longer represents a disturbance variable due to the integration process, but is included in the correlation.
- the size of the working step size and thus the search speed is no longer directly dependent on the test signal amplitude and the 1st derivative of the quality characteristic at the working point.

Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a method and a circuit arrangement for regulating extreme values, with which both the finding of an extreme value and the holding of this extreme value and thus the optimization of manipulated values in technical systems is made possible.
A special application is in accelerator systems. In terms of content, the extreme value control in this application is equivalent to the term optimization, but the focus here is not only on finding the extreme value, but also on maintaining this value under the influence of drift phenomena or disturbances.
An extreme value control method is already known which works with periodic test signals (Schulze, K.-P. and Rehberg, K.-J .: Design of adaptive systems, a representation for engineers, Verlag Technik, Berlin 1988, page 149).
However, this extreme value control method has the disadvantage when used in technical systems that the search loss is dependent on the steepness of the quality function in the vicinity of the optimum. It cannot therefore be kept constant.
Furthermore, the control signal with its working movement represents a disturbance variable in the correlation operation. In addition, it has an unfavorable effect that the optimization speed is dependent on the setting of the test signal amplitude and in particular on the steepness around the optimal area.
The invention has for its object a method and a circuit arrangement to propose with which the extreme value of a size, often referred to as quality size, can be found and held even with very small actuating movements where the search loss can be kept constant by the search movements.
According to the invention, the object is as set out in the claims Features resolved.
The inventions are explained in more detail below using an exemplary embodiment for the method and the circuit arrangement.
The accompanying drawing shows the block diagram of the circuit arrangement for processing two manipulated variables.
The essence of the method, finding and maintaining an extreme value, preferably a technical system, is realized as follows:
A test signal, preferably a binary pseudo random signal, is required for each manipulated variable. The test signals of the individual manipulated variables must not be correlated with one another. The amplitude of this test signal is regulated so that the resulting fluctuations in the quality signal adhere to a certain amplitude. The test signal regulated in this way is added to the current operating point of the manipulated variable and represents a manipulated variable of the system, the extreme value of which is to be sought and held.
The differences between the individual sampling steps are formed from the resulting quality signal. The differences in the manipulated variable between these sampling steps are also formed. These differences are linked with a correlation operator, preferably with a polarity correlator. The result of this correlation operation is zero if there is no correlation and one if there is a correlation. The result of this correlation is integrated. The output signal of the integrator represents the new operating point of the manipulated variable under consideration. With this method, the manipulated value automatically runs to the point at which the quality signal assumes a maximum.
The integration time constant is adapted between two specified limit values. The output signal of the correlation operator is used for this. If the amount of this output value is zero on average, the larger limit of the integration time constant in the integrator is used. If the value of the initial value of the correlation operator is on average one, the smaller limit value of the integration time constant is used. The integration time constant is interpolated in between. This leads to shorter search times if the manipulated variable continuously moves in the direction of the maximum of the quality size.
This procedure can be used for a system with several manipulated variables. The procedural steps are carried out simultaneously for all manipulated variables, only the procedural steps of the test signal amplitude control are carried out individually and in succession for each manipulated variable. In deviation from this, it is also possible to carry out all process steps of the individual manipulated variables one after the other.
The above-described method can be carried out with the circuit arrangement according to the invention. It is possible to use extreme value control on systems with one or more manipulated variables. A circuit arrangement with two manipulated variables is shown here. The further description only refers to the blocks for the manipulated variable y 1 . The blocks and the signals are given the corresponding index 1. The quality signal x and the

Block 7.1 ist ein Integrator mit der Zeitkonstante T1.The test signal generator is a binary random or pseudo random generator with the output variables -1 and + 1. The amplifier 2 amplifies the input signal by the value m. The variable m is controlled by the amplifier in such a way that the associated effect of the manipulated value on the quality value of

There is a correlation operator 6 for each manipulated variable. The correlation between the change in the quality signal x and the change in the respective manipulated variable y is established therein. A polarity correlator is used. The output signal of this polarity correlator can have the values +1 (same sign), 0 (one or both input variables equal to zero) and -1 (different sign).
Block 7.1 is an integrator with the time constant T 1 .
Die Wirkungsweise der Schaltungsanordnung im speziellen Fall für die Stellgröße y1 ist folgende: The mode of operation of the circuit arrangement in the special case for the manipulated variable y 1 is as follows:
Je mehr Stellgrößen also
The manipulated variable operating point y 1 0 is acted upon by the binary test signal of the amplitude m 1 , which is regulated in the test signal amplitude controller 2.1. If it is assumed that the quality characteristics of real monotonically monotonically left side from the extreme value increasing and right side of the extreme value is genuine falling, then at an operating point on the left side d from the extreme value, the signal 1 is always equal to +1 and at an operating point on the right side D from the signal extreme value 1 is always equal to -1.
The amplitude of the test signal is controlled by the test signal amplitude control in block 2.1 in such a way that, in the described process, the search loss of the variable x with respect to this manipulated variable y 1 maintains a certain predeterminable value. No further details are given about the type of this control loop. The usual known means of control technology can be used for this.
Since the amount of the quantity d 1 is exactly 0 or 1, the time constant T 1 of the integrator 7.1 represents the step size of the work steps when it is implemented as a time-discrete system. In a time-continuous system, this time constant is inversely proportional to the optimization speed. This integration time constant T 1 is adapted in block 8.1 in order on the one hand to obtain a higher search speed outside the optimum and on the other hand to obtain the greatest possible stability against disturbances in the optimum. For this purpose, the two extreme cases are assumed that on the one hand d 1 is always -1 or +1 and on the other hand d 1 is equally often -1 or +1 or exactly zero. These two states are separated by a moving average or a low-pass filter and rectified by an amount. If the state just described persists over a certain period of time (only +1 or -1 or alternating sign and the value zero), the rectified and filtered value reaches the value 1 (one of the two signs predominates strongly) or the value 0 ( alternating sign or zero). In the event that the rectified value is exactly 1, the time constant T 1 is set to a minimum value (high optimization speed). In the other case, that the rectified value is zero, this time constant is set to a maximum value (low optimization speed). The time constant is interpolated between these two extreme cases.
So that the individual one-dimensional optimizations do not influence one another, or only influence one another slightly, pseudo-random binary signal generators are used for the test signal generators 1. Compared to fixed, but uncorrelated frequencies for the test signal generators, this does not favor certain control variables, namely those with the higher test signal frequency, during the optimization. The search and optimization speed is therefore the same over a longer period for all manipulated variables.
If you consider a single manipulated variable in this multi-dimensional search, the simultaneous extreme value control of all other manipulated variables acts as a source of interference. However, the effect of the test signal of this size is filtered out of the interference by the correlation operation. The more manipulated variables to be optimized at the same time, the greater the amplitude of this interference signal. The more manipulated variables are optimized at the same time, the greater the time constants of the integrators 7 must be in order to be able to filter the useful signal out of the signal mixture. The optimization speed therefore decreases with the number of manipulated variables to be optimized.
1. Ableitung der Gütekennlinie im Arbeitspunkt abhängig. The test signal amplitude is regulated to the width of the optimal area. The search losses that occur thus remain constant.
Since not only the test signal but the sum of the test signal and the manipulated variable operating point is used for the correlation, the working movement of the manipulated variable operating point no longer represents a disturbance variable due to the integration process, but is included in the correlation.
By using the difference formation with the blocks 5 and the polarity correlation in the blocks 6, the size of the working step size and thus the search speed is no longer directly dependent on the test signal amplitude and the 1st derivative of the quality characteristic at the working point.
