Definitions

  • This invention relates to a deadbolt type lock mechanism which is usually mounted on a closing face of a door, or other closure member, and which is co-operable, when the closure member is moved to a closed position in a fixed outer frame, with corresponding keeper elements mounted in the fixed frame.
  • a deadbolt is usually movable to and fro, between locked and unlocked positions, and in a direction generally perpendicular to the closing face.
  • the mechanism also usually includes espagnolette type fixings e.g. mushroom cams, which co-operate with corresponding keeper slots or apertures in the fixed frame to give additional locking capability, hence increased resistance to any attempt at forced entry.
  • the mechanism may also include pivoting hooks, and shootbolts, to provide additional locking capability, and all such additional locking components are movable into and out of locked positions by linear movement of respective actuator elements e.g. espagnolette rods, in a direction generally parallel to the closing face.
  • a deadbolt type lock mechanism also includes usually a spring-loaded latch, and downward pivoting movement of at least the inside handle (when the mechanism is unlocked) can cause the latch to be released, and then allow the closure member to be opened.
  • the mechanism may be arranged so that the outside handle cannot be operated to unlatch the door, even when the door is unlocked. In such event, key-operated release of the latch is permitted from outside.
  • a key-operated locking barrel mechanism is provided (operated from inside or outside), and which holds the deadbolt and the other locking components in the locked position.
  • the invention is concerned with deadbolt type locking mechanisms of the above general type, and seeks to provide an improved means of transmitting rotational motion, resulting from operation of the locking barrel, into actuating movement of the deadbolt and any additional locking component(s).
  • a deadbolt type locking mechanism which is adapted to be mounted on a closing face of a closure member which is co-operable, when the closure member is moved to a closed position in a fixed outer frame, with corresponding keeper elements in the fixed outer frame, and said mechanism comprising:
  • the trigger mechanism has a nose which is capable of being projected to a position underlying an abutment surface of the tumbler in order to maintain the tumbler in the release position, of being withdrawn to allow the tumbler to move downwardly into engagement with a part of the locking barrel assembly in order to take-up the blocking position.
  • the trigger mechanism conveniently is spring-loaded towards the engaged position.
  • the deadbolt has an internal face which is blocked from return movement to the unlocked position by engagement with the tumbler when the latter is in its blocking position.
  • the actuator mechanism to activate the deadbolt type locking mechanism preferably takes the form of a handle operated rotatable actuator mechanism, and which may take one of the known designs used in order to actuate deadbolts and related locking components.
  • a deadbolt type locking mechanism is designated generally by reference 10, and is adapted to be mounted on a closing face 11 of a closure member, such as a door. Upon closing movement, the mechanism 10 co-operates with corresponding keeper elements (not shown) in the fixed outer frame.
  • the mechanism includes a deadbolt 12 which is movable to and fro between locked positions shown in Figures 2 and 3, and an unlocked position shown in Figure 1, such movement being in a direction generally perpendicular to the closing face 11.
  • At least one additional locking component (not shown in detail), such as a mushroom cam, is actuated between locked and unlocked positions by a respective actuator element (not shown in detail) which is movable linearly in a direction generally parallel to the closing face.
  • the additional locking component(s) may include espagnolette cams, pivoting hooks and shootbolts.
  • a spring-loaded latch 13 is also movable to and fro, in a direction generally perpendicular to the closing face 11, between a latched position, as shown in Figures 1 to 3, and a withdrawn unlatched position. In the latched position, it engages with a corresponding keeper element (not shown) provided in the fixed outer frame.
  • An actuator mechanism is provided, designated generally by reference 14, and which can be operated by a handle (not shown) in order to actuate, and de-actuate the mechanism 10.
  • the handle of the mechanism 14 is pivotable upwardly in an anti-clockwise direction, in order to actuate the deadbolt 12 and any additional locking component(s) to move to the respective locked positions.
  • the handle is also pivotable in an opposite direction i.e. clockwise, from a horizontal datum position, in order (a) to move the deadbolt 12 and the additional locking component from their locked positions to the unlocked positions and (b) to unlatch the spring-loaded latch 13.
  • the means of transmitting actuating movement of the mechanism 14 to the locking components (including deadbolt 12), and to the latching component will be well known to those of ordinary skill in the art and will not be described in detail herein.
  • a key-operated locking barrel 15 is operative to maintain the deadbolt 12 and the additional locking components in their respective locked positions, and to prevent unlocking movement of the handle of the mechanism 14 in the clockwise direction.
  • Figure 1 shows the locking barrel 15 in its unlocked position
  • Figure 3 shows the locking barrel after rotation of the cylinder through 360°.
  • Figure 2 shows the deadbolt 12 moved to the locked position, but in which it is still capable of being withdrawn to the unlocked position, by downward movement of the actuating handle.
  • a motion-transmission mechanism is provided, which is operative between the locking barrel 15 and the deadbolt 12 and the additional locking components, such mechanism including a spring-loaded tumbler 17 which is engageable with the barrel 15, and a trigger mechanism 16 which is responsive to movement of the tumbler 17 and is operative to maintain the deadbolt 12 and the additional locking component(s) in their locked positions.
  • Figure 3 shows the cylinder cam lifting the tumbler 17, against spring loading (not shown in detail), and also shows the consequential retraction of the trigger mechanism 16 which then allows the tumbler 17 to drop. This then holds the deadbolt and additional locking components in their locked positions.
  • the mechanism 10 is illustrated having an additional handle-operated rotatable actuator mechanism 14a, and which will normally be operated by the outside handle.
  • the trigger mechanism 16 has a nose 18 which is projected forwardly so as to form a seat underlying an abutment surface 19 on a lower portion of tumbler 17.
  • the tumbler 17 therefore is held against vertical movement in the position shown in Figure 1, and with an upper abutment surface 20 of the tumbler 17 engaging an upper abutment 21 which is fixed inside the housing of the mechanism 10.
  • Figure 2 shows the tumbler 17 still held in the same position of Figure 1, but after actuation of mechanism 14 to move the deadbolt 12 (and any other locking components, such as hooks, locking cams, cylinder etc) to the locked position. However, this is a temporary position of the deadbolt, from which it could be withdrawn by actuation of mechanism 14 in an unlocking mode.
