Abstract

Amplificateur optique (8) à fibre dopée pour la bande L (bande de 1570 à 1610 nm environ) comportant une fibre optique dopée (10) comprenant un coeur monomode dopé (16) et une gaine (18, 20), et un moyen de pompage optique (12) couplé optiquement à la fibre dopée, caractérisé en ce que ladite gaine comprend une gaine interne multimode (18) et une gaine externe (20), le signal de pompage étant injecté dans la gaine interne (18), et en ce que le coeur monomode (16) est dopé de manière à induire un taux moyen d'inversion de population inférieur à 50 % dans la fibre dopée, et de préférence compris entre 35 % et 45 %. Description

Amplificateur optique à fibre dopée pour la bande à 1600 nm
La présente invention concerne le domaine de la transmission de signaux optiques sur fibre optique, et plus particulièrement un amplificateur optique à fibre dopée adapté à l'amplification de signaux optiques dans la bande à 1610 nm, dite aussi bande L, et qui s'étend de 1570 à 1610 nm environ. Dans les systèmes de transmission par fibre optique de grande longueur, notamment mais pas exclusivement les systèmes de transmission transocéaniques, il est nécessaire de ré-amplifier périodiquement les signaux optiques transmis sur les fibres optiques du câble pour compenser l'atténuation des signaux. Des amplificateurs sont ainsi prévus régulièrement le long du câble, typiquement tous les 50 à 100 km.
L'émergence des systèmes de transmission à multiplexage en longueur d'onde (en terminologie anglo-saxonne "WDM", pour "Wavelength Division Multiplexing") implique, d'une part, un besoin d'une bande passante plus large, de manière à accueillir un plus grand nombre de canaux, et d'autre part, l'utilisation d'amplificateurs de plus en plus puissants, c'est-à-dire de pompes optiques de plus en plus puissantes, aptes à amplifier ce plus grand nombre de canaux.
L'augmentation de la largeur de bande peut s'obtenir par l'utilisation dans un même système de transmission de deux bandes, par exemple la bande à 1550 nm (dite bande C, et qui s'étend de 1525 à 1565 nm environ) et la bande L, citée plus haut.
Pour chacune de ces bandes, un moyen de pompage monomode injectant un signal dans le coeur dopé de la fibre ne permet pas d'atteindre les puissances requises.
L'injection d'une puissance de pompe importante pourrait évidemment être réalisée par un nombre important de pompes optiques monomodes. Cependant, on comprend qu'une telle solution ne présente pas d'intérêt pratique, en raison de son coût et de son encombrement. Il α été proposé dans EP-A-0 723 714 de surmonter cette limitation par l'utilisation de moyens de pompage multimode.
EP-A-0 723 714 décrit un amplificateur à fibre optique comprenant une fibre optique dopée composée d'un coeur monomode codopé, d'une gaine interne multimode et d'une gaine externe, et un moyen de pompage optique multimode couplé optiquement à la gaine interne. Le codopage du coeur monomode est spécifiquement choisi pour favoriser le transport d'énergie de la pompe de l'ytterbium vers l'erbium. L'ytterbium présente l'avantage de présenter un pic d'absorption très élevé à 980 nm (longueur d'onde du signal de pompage utilisé dans cet amplificateur), ce qui favorise l'inversion de population dans le dopant et permet ainsi une puissance de sortie élevée.
Ce type d'amplificateur à fibre codopé permet d'obtenir un gain élevé avec un bruit faible. Cependant, on constate que l'amplificateur décrit dans EP-A-0 723 714 fonctionne avec des signaux dans la bande C, mais n'est pas adapté à l'amplification dans la bande L.
La présente invention vise à pallier ce manque et propose à cette fin un amplificateur optique à fibre dopée présentant une puissance élevée et un niveau de bruit faible, et spécifiquement adapté à l'amplification des signaux optiques dans la bande L. De manière plus précise l'invention a pour objet un amplificateur optique à fibre dopée pour la bande L comprenant une fibre optique dopée comprenant un coeur monomode dopé et une gaine, et un moyen de pompage optique couplé optiquement à la fibre dopée, caractérisé en ce que ladite gaine comprend une gaine interne multimode et une gaine externe, le signal de pompage étant injecté dans la gaine interne, et en ce que le coeur monomode est dopé de manière à induire un taux moyen d'inversion de population inférieur à 50 % dans la fibre dopée.
Par taux d'inversion de population, on entend le ratio N2/Nτ, où N2 et Nτ représentent respectivement le nombre d'ions du dopant à l'état excité et le nombre total d'ions du dopant. De préférence le taux moyen d'inversion de population est compris entre 35% et 45 %, et est en particulier proche de 40%.
L'invention a également pour objet un système de transmission optique comprenant un câble à fibre optique et deux stations terminales, et au moins un amplificateur optique conforme à l'invention.
D'autres caractéristiques et avantages de l'invention apparaîtront mieux à la lecture de la description qui suit, donnée à titre illustratif mais non limitatif, de modes de réalisation de l'invention, en référence aux dessins annexés, sur lesquels :
- la figure 1 représente un système de transmission optique comportant au moins un amplificateur selon l'invention, et
- la figure 2 représente une coupe transversale de la fibre optique dopée de l'amplificateur.
Le système de transmission optique représenté sur la figure 1 comprend un câble à fibres optiques, dont une seule fibre optique 2 est représentée, et deux stations terminales 4, 6 reliées entre elles par le câble à fibres optiques. Pour chaque fibre optique, au moins un amplificateur 8 est prévu pour amplifier les signaux optiques transmis sur cette fibre. Cet amplificateur est conçu pour amplifier les signaux dans la bande L. En pratique, des amplificateurs sont disposés à intervalles réguliers le long du câble. La distance entre amplificateurs successifs dépend des spécificités du système de transmission (longueur totale du câble, nature des fibres optiques, ...); elle est de l'ordre de 50 à 100 km ou plus.
L'amplificateur comprend, conformément à l'invention, une fibre optique dopée 10 et un moyen de pompage optique multimode 12 dont le signal de pompage est injecté dans la fibre optique 10 par l'intermédiaire d'un coupleur optique 14.
La fibre optique dopée 10 est une fibre à double gaine. Sa coupe transversale est représentée sur la figure 2. Elle comprend un coeur monomode dopé 1 6, le dopant étant choisi (Er, Yt, ...) pour permettre une amplification d'un signal de ligne se propageant dans le coeur, une gaine interne multimode 1 8, et une gaine externe 20 destinée à confiner le signal de pompage injecté dans la gaine interne multimode 18. Les diamètres du coeur monomode, de la gaine interne multimode et de la gaine externe sont par exemple égaux à 6, 50 et 1 25 μm. La fibre optique comporte d'autres gaines (notamment gaine(s) de protection mécanique) qui n'ont pas été représentées car, d'une part, elles sont connues en soi et, d'autre part, elle ne sont pas utiles à la compréhension de l'invention.
Le moyen de pompage 12 est multimode. Il injecte un signal de pompage de forte puissance dans la gaine interne multimode de la fibre dopée 10. Ce signal est absorbé par le dopant du coeur monomode lorsqu'il le traverse. Un coupleur 14 multimode/monomode adapté à l'injection du signal de pompage du moyen 12 est décrit notamment dans EP-A-0 801 827.
Pour l'homme du métier, il est important, dans le cas d'un amplificateur de forte puissance, qu'une forte inversion de population soit provoquée dans la fibre dopée, afin de limiter le niveau de bruit engendré dans la partie initiale de la fibre dopée (cf. EP-A-0 723 714 qui préconise un codopage Er/Yt afin d'augmenter l'inversion de population). Les inventeurs ont constaté, au contraire, qu'une faible inversion de population dans le coeur monomode permet d'amplifier des signaux dans la bande L, tout en offrant un gain élevé et un niveau de bruit faible.
On notera que l'utilisation d'un codopage, par exemple Er/Yt, n'est pas exclue pour l'amplification dans la bande L, dans la mesure où la concentration des codopants est telle que l'inversion de population reste faible.
Bien entendu, la présente invention n'est pas limitée aux exemples et modes de réalisation décrits et représentés, mais elle est susceptible de nombreuses variantes à la portée de l'homme du métier. En particulier, bien que la figure 1 représente un système de transmission à 1600 nm, l'amplificateur selon l'invention trouve également application dans les systèmes bi-bandes, L et par exemple C, dans lesquels les moyens d'amplification comprennent un démultiplexeur pour séparer les signaux optiques de chacune des bandes, deux voies en parallèle pour amplifier respectivement les signaux de la bande L et ceux de la bande C, et un multiplexeur pour réinjecter les signaux amplifiés dans la fibre de ligne.

Claims

REVENDICATIONS
1. Amplificateur optique (8) à fibre dopée pour la bande L comprenant une fibre optique dopée (10) comprenant un coeur monomode dopé (16) et une gaine (18, 20), et un moyen de pompage optique (12) couplé optiquement à la fibre dopée, caractérisé en ce que ladite gaine comprend une gaine interne multimode (18) et une gaine externe (20), le signal de pompage étant injecté dans la gaine interne (18), et en ce que le coeur monomode (16) est dopé de manière à induire un taux moyen d'inversion de population inférieur 50 % dans la fibre dopée.
2. Amplificateur selon la revendication 1 , dans lequel le taux moyen d'inversion de population dans la fibre dopée est compris entre 35% et 45%.
3. Amplificateur selon l'une des revendications 1 ou 2, dans lequel le dopant du coeur est Er.
4. Système de transmission optique comprenant un câble à fibre optique (2) et deux stations terminales (4, 6), caractérisé en ce qu'il comprend au moins un amplificateur optique selon l'une des revendications 1 à 3.
