Abstract

Recording material for ink-jet printing comprises base paper and an ink-receiving layer applied from aqueous dispersion or solution, in which the base paper is coated with an extruded layer containing an extrudable polyvinyl alcohol (PVAL). An Independent claim is also included for a process for the production of ink-jet recording material from base paper with a surface roughness (Sheffield) of less than 300, by melt-extrusion of a PVAL homo- and/or copolymer from an extruder with zone temperatures of 140-230 degrees C and at a screw speed such that the viscosity of the melt corresponds to the melt viscosity of a PVAL processed in a 2-inch screw extruder at 140-230 degrees C with a screw speed of more than 50 r.p.m., passing the molten polymer into the gap between the paper and a highly-polished cooling cylinder and then coating the extruded PVAL layer with an ink-receiving layer from aqueous solution or dispersion.
